Fireworks causing air pollution
In Southern California, New Year’s Eve fireworks caused problems, making the air in Los Angeles unsafe to breathe. Fireworks make the air dirty and are bad for health and the natural world. Fireworks can also start fires. Some areas, like the SanGabriel Mountains, are very dry and windy, meaning fires can spread quickly. To improve community service, local governments warn people not to use fireworks or anything that can make a fire. If someone has unlawful fireworks, they could get a fine or go to jail (监狱).
Students create a mini forest
In the US, a group of students at a school near Portland, Oregon, are creating a “tiny forest” using something called the Miyawaki Method. They have planted 600 plants and trees in an area as small as a tennis court. The method is named after a Japanese botanist (植物学家), Akira Miyawaki. The idea for the tiny forest started when their social studies teacher, Mr. Walsh, learned about it on a BBC radio
program in 2021. Now, after almost four years, the trees have grown to almost 20 feet tall.
The students who took part in planting the forest hope it can make the students coming after them. They want to teach others about getting in touch with nature and encourage them to do something to fight against climate change.
New freedom for Mickey Mouse
Artists and writers can now use Mickey and Minnie Mouse freely. This change comes after 96 years. Disney cannot object (反对) to this, but there are some rules. This change is for the old versions (版本) of Mickey, like the black-and-white Mickey from Steamboat Willie.
Disney still controls the later versions of Mickey, like Sorcerer Mickey from Fantasia. Also, Disney has a special mark on Mickey, so nobody else can use it like they do. You can not use Mickey Mouse as a mascot (吉祥物). But if you want to make your own Steamboat Willie, go ahead and be creative!

D. To push others to protect the environment.
4. What can artists and writers do with Mickey Mouse?
A. They can use Mickey in any form of art freely.
B. They can use Sorcerer Mickey from Fantasia freely.

In the bright moonlight, Jack is walking home. Suddenly, he finds a hawk lying beside a box. Very curious, he begins to check it.
The hawk seems to be in pain. One of its wings looks broken, touching the ground. Its eyes look scared. So Jack takes off his T-shirt and wraps (包裹) it carefully round the hawk. Then he carries it home.
“I can’t take him into the house,” he thinks. “My mum doesn’t like animals in the house!”
Thinking for a while Jack decides to hide the hawk in the garden shed (棚子). He secretly puts the hawk down on the floor with his T-shirt. Looking at the hawk, he says, “It’s your home now. Call you Falco, OK?”
After that, he goes back to his room. Unluckily, his parents are waiting for him. Finding his T-shirt missing, they get quite angry and don’t allow him to go out within a week. Jack goes to his room without any words, but he can’t fall asleep because he is worrying about Falco.
In the early morning, Jack takes some bread to feed Falco and goes back to his room secretly. After breakfast, Jack goes to the garden shed, holding a small bowl of water.
In the shed, he finds Falco sitting quietly in a corner, the bread still on the floor. Falco’s eyes are open, but not bright now. Jack puts the water in front of Falco. At first, Falco ignores (忽视) it, then he begins to drink. Jack sits quietly, looking at him, imagining Falco flying in the endless blue sky. But now he is stuck on the earth. “How can I help you return to the sky, Falco?”
When Jack leaves the shed, his brother Jim is waiting for him outside.
“What’s so interesting in the shed?”
“Nothing.”
“Tell me the truth, Jack. I think you haven’t forgotten my broken rocket!”
Finally, Jack has no choice but to tell his brother the truth. Jim becomes very excited.
“Jim, please don’t say anything to Mum and Dad. I can repair your rocket.”
“My rocket isn’t important, Jack. But Falco is!”
Then the brothers discuss how to feed Falco. They decide to get help from their friend Holly because she knows a lot about animals, birds and nature. Later, the brothers go to Holly. Holly advises them to feed some meat to Falco.
Over the next few days, Falco gets much better. He always eats the meat Jack and Jim bring him from the kitchen. Jack even digs up worms in the park for Falco. Falco loves them! His feathers look bright and shiny, too. But he still can’t fly.
One morning, Holly comes to see Falco. After watching it for a while, Holly says, “Falco is well enough to fly again!” Hearing this, they happily open the door, and watch Falco step into the sunlight slowly. Falco beats his wings and tries to fly in small circles, then in large ones. Suddenly, he makes a loud cry and flies away. Jack feels a bit sad. but he knows they are right.
One evening, Jack and Jim are sitting in their room. It is a cool and quiet evening. Suddenly, he hears a cry from far away. A familiar cry. A bird is flying in circles across the sky. It’s Falco! Jack watches it fly, happy and wild.

If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something that does not get used often quickly falls into a state of decline (衰退). For example, a hobby that you haven’t done for a few years, like playing the piano. The next time you pick it up, maybe you’ve forgotten altogether! In order to avoid this, people take usual exercise to keep their skills well-practiced.
Well, what about the brain? As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline. In some cases, this can lead to certain brain problems: such as dementia (痴呆). However, all is not lost because these days it’s easy to train your brain. Smartphones and apps provide programs that can test, keep and even improve our memories and a number of other brain skills. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains active, right?
Well, no, actually. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people think it is beneficial to play some online games that are designed to improve brain health, the evidence (证据) of the benefits is “weak to non-existent”. Playing a “brain game” might cause improvements in game performance, yet it hasn’t proven to a believable result in people’s daily cognitive (认知的) abilities.
Don’t lose heart, though. There are other ways to develop the brain. It suggests trying new activities which can make you think in new ways, let you connect with others socially and help you lead a healthy life. Among their suggestions are practicing Tai Chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There’s more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK, has said that brain decline is not unavoidable. As long as the activities are “new to you and require your full focus”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something new. Maybe it’s time to try that hobby you’ve always wanted to do.
16. Why is playing the piano mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic of brain decline. B. To explain how to keep physically healthy.
C. To show the importance of practice. D. To describe the meaning of an old saying.
17. According to the passage, how can the brain training apps help you?
A. It will improve our memory. B. It can make us smarter.
C. It can do little to train our brains. D. It can protect us from ageing.
18. How can we develop the brain according to the passage?
A. Using smart phone regularly. B. Trying some new activities.
C. Playing brain games online. D. Doing what you are good at.
19. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Playing brain games can improve people’s daily cognitive abilities.
B. Playing brain games has been proven to help the brain work better.
C. Repeating the skills you already know will be good for your brain.
D. James Goodwin believes we can do something about brain decline.
20. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. How to keep brain healthy and active. B. How to live meaningfully at an old age.
C. Disadvantages of using smart phones. D. Advantages of trying something new.
【答案】16. D 17. C 18. B 19. D 20. A

As the Year of the Snake begins, the famous Legend of the White Snake, a story loved for over 1,000 years, continues to encourage many Spring Festival events and activities.
Known as one of China’s four great folktales, the story has changed over time across different dynasties, with its cultural importance still living on today.
“In the earliest versions of the White Snake legend, the snake spirit was shown as an evil (邪恶的) creature to warn people about the dangers of giving in to their desires (欲望),” said Wang Yong’en, a professor from the Communication University of China.
During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), in the work Jing Shi Tong Yan (Stories to Caution the World), writer Feng Menglong gave the snake demon (妖) more feelings. The story is about Xu Xian, a handsome man, and Bai Niangzi, a snake demon who marries him. But the monk Fa Hai puts an end to their peaceful life by tricking Xu into cheating Bai. “When the snake demon is caught, she looks into Xu’s eyes with sadness and surprise,” said Wang.
Today, new technology and ways of storytelling have added new layers (层次) to the tale, making it connect with modern values. One example is Tsui Hark’s 1993 movie Green Snake, which shows Fa Hai as more human, showing his struggles and challenging old ideas of what is right and wrong.
Beijing-based Light Chaser Animation’s White Snake franchise (系列) is popular with younger audiences. The story is told in a fun and light way, which critics (评论家) say makes it easier for younger viewers to connect with.
By sharing popular movies like these with people around the world, China’s rich stories and traditional culture are becoming more well-known globally (全球地).

“I can’t take him into the house,” he thinks. “My mum doesn’t like animals in the house!”

Chinese wig (假发) seller Deng Nan saw an 85% increase in sales on Black Friday in 2024,thanks to cross-border e-commerce (跨境电商), reported China Daily.
In China, wigs aren’t something people always need. But in foreign markets, they can be an important part of fashion.
Three years ago, Deng saw a growing need for wigs abroad and started selling them online. Now, his store sells about 40.000 wigs a month. Deng is one of many young Chinese entrepreneurs (创业者) using cross-border e-commerce sites, like Temu and Shein, to sell products made in China.
China’s cross-border e-commerce industry (行业) has grown very fast. In the first nine, months of 2024, it made 1.88 trillion yuan. This was an 11.5% increase compared to 2023,according to the General Administration of Customs (海关总署)。
A big advantage of Chinese cross-border e-commerce sites is that they connect makers directly with buyers using technology like artificial intelligence (AI technology). For example, the fast fashion online store Shein helps Chinese factories sell more products around the world. Meanwhile, the government also supports the industry by building storage (仓储) and delivery (送货) systems abroad and adding more products to the import (进口) list.
However, Chinese e-commerce sites are facing problems with new rules abroad. For example, the US said it would limit cheap, duty-free (免税) goods from China: According to experts, Chinese e-commerce companies should learn local laws and change their supply chain to follow these rules.
11. Which is the main reason for Deng Nan’s success?
A. Festivals like Black Friday abroad. B. The wide market for wigs abroad.
C. China’s overproduction of wigs. D. The growth of China’s fashion industry.
12. How does the text show China’s cross-border e-commerce growth in 2024?
A. By using news reports. B. By interviewing some sellers.
C. By listing sales numbers. D. By comparing it with other industries.
13. What is the advantage of Chinese cross-border e-commerce sites?
A. Higher quality and more products. B. Faster delivery times in China.
C. Support from foreign governments. D. Direct connection between makers and buyers.
14. How can we describe China’s cross-border e-commerce industry?
A. It will continue to grow in the US. B. It is growing rapidly but faces challenges;
C. It is well prepared for new changes. D. It will fall because of the storage problem.
15. According to experts, how should Chinese e-commerce companies deal with new changes?
A. Add more products to the import list.
B. Increase production in Chinese factories.
C. Study local laws. and change supply chains in time.
D. Improve AI technology to connect makers and buyers.

Don’t lose heart though. There are other ways to develop the brain. Among their suggestions are practicing Tai Chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There’s more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK, has said that brain decline is not unavoidable. As the Year of the Snake begins, the famous Legend of the White Snake, a story loved for over 1,000 years, continues to encourage many Spring Festival events and activities.
Known as one of China’s four great folktales the story has changed over time across different dynasties, with its cultural importance still living on today.
