About 1. 10l manatees died in Florida last year, many from hunger. So last December
government wildlife experts (专家) came up with a plan to give food to the manatees. They
decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. Ron Mezich, an expert, said
"We're making a difference." So far, they have served up more than 193,oo0 pounds of lettuce

to hungry manatees.
Manatees are huge sea animals that only eat sea grass and other plants that live in the
sea. That's one reason why they're sometimes called "sea cows".
Since 1967. Florida's manatees have been on the US government's list of endangered
animals. Most dangers to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems facing
the animals are boats. Thousands of manatees were hit or killed by boats. At one point, there
were only about 2. ooo manatees left in Florida. With protection, the number increased. In 2016.
there were more than 6,oo0 manatees.
However, as sea grass began to disappear, the number of manatees keeps going dowr
again. Warming seas with polluted water have created huge growths of algae (藻) on the
ocean's surface. The algae blocks the sunlight that allows the sea grass to grow. In Indian River
Lagoon, where manatees often go in the winter, about 9o% of the sea grass beds there have
died off. Florida will work to help restore (恢复) sea grass beds. But that will take time
Scientists still worry that hundreds more manatees could starve this winter.

As soon as it stopped snowing, Pinocchio set out for school with his fine spelling-book
under his arm. As he went along the road, he thought, "Today at school I will learn to read at
once. Tomorrow, I will begin to write. The day after tomorrow, I will... Then, with what I will
learn, I will make a great deal of money, and with the money I will buy a new cloth coat for
my dad Geppetto. No! It should be all made of gold and silver. That poor man really deserves
(值得)it!"
Suddenly, he heard music that sounded like fifes (横笛) and the beating of a big drum. He
stopped and listened. The sounds came from the end of across street
“What can that music be? What a pity that I have to go to school, or else.." Pinocchio
said. And he remained irresolute (犹豫不决的). "Should I go to school? Or should I go to the
place where the music came from?" he said to himself. He thought for a while, and then he
made a decision.
The faster he ran, the nearer came the sounds of fifes and the beating of a big drum. At
last, he found himself in the middle of a square quite full of people, who were all crowded
round a building
"What is that building?' asked Pinocchio, turning to a little boy.
"Read the poster-it is all written-and then you will know."
"I would read it willingly, but it so happens that today I don't know how to read."
"Well. I will read it to you. The writing on that poster is: The Great Puppet (木偶) Theatre."
"Has the play begun?"
"It is beginning now."
"How much does it cost to go in?"

Classical Chinese gardens are purposely designed so that no matter where you stand, you
can never see the whole thing at once. The purpose of a classical Chinese garden is to let people
enjoy nature. Besides, the classical Chinese gardens have another purpose-to inspire(激发)
artistic expression like poetry, literature or painting. Nearly all Chinese gardens have the things
mentioned below
Water is a necessary thing that no Chinese garden can go without. Water in a garden
typically symbolizes(象征) a lake or even the ocean. Water can even symbolize life, movement
八年级英语试卷第7页(共8页)
and dreams
Large rocks typically symbolize mountains. Many of the rocks in Suzhou gardens come
from Lake Tai, shaped by the flow of water over thousands of years. Smaller rocks are often
on show in fancy halls. This shows the appreciation the garden owners had of these rocks.
There can't be a garden without plants. Different plants have different meanings. Bamboo,
for example, stands for strength. Flowers, meanwhile, add color to a garden, with each
carrying a symbolic meaning of its own
Gates in different shapes divide a garden into different parts. The most common type of
gate, the moon gate, is simply a circle. Windows are placed throughout the garden to allow the
passage of light. You can also get a look at some interesting trees or rocks on the other side
from the windows
In Chinese gardens, pavilions(亭) are usually placed in some of the best viewing places
In the past, pavilions were also used as places for garden owners to reflect, paint and write
poems.
In fact, classical Chinese gardens afe in some ways very much like traditional Chinese
landscape paintings. And all of the parts show the importance of nature in Chinese culture.
74. What does bamboo mean in a classical Chinese garden?
75. What is the purpose of classical Chinese gardens?
76. What do you think of the Chinese gardens? Why?
