May 18th is International Museum Day. Let’s take a look at some of the strangest museums around the world.
Giant Shoe Museum
Located in the famous Pike Place Market of Seattle, the Giant Shoe Museum is a single exhibit wall located on the outside of the Old Seattle Paperworks store and brings a lot of business to the shop as a result. A variety of giant shoes include a size 37 shoe worn by the world’s tallest man, a real clown shoe and the world’s largest collection of giant shoes.
Washington Banana Museum
Ann Mitchell Lovell really loves bananas. In fact, she loves them enough to not only run the Washington Banana Museum, which features almost 4,000 items related to the world’s best-selling fruit, but to also upload photos of her favorite items from the museum online so those who can’t make it to the physical location can still enjoy the virtual Banana Museum.
Roswell UFO Museum
Visitors can ask as many questions as possible about the Roswell incident of 1947, and know about what was spotted in the sky that fateful night. Exhibits include information on the event, crop circles, other UFO sightings, Area 51, and so on. Regardless of your personal opinion about UFOs, there’s no denying that the museum has been quite successful. Since it opened its doors in 1992, it has outgrown two different locations, and now occupies an old movie theater.

Artist Tom Campbell has exhibited his work at Outlaw Studios at Marina Commercial Park. The exhibition is Tom’s largest one to date and includes affordable art. The interactive show is made up of drawings, paintings, sculptures and live performances. Throughout the exhibition, Tom is working, giving the public an opportunity to watch inside his studio and have their portraits drawn. People can also commission a piece of their choosing.
Wall painting is part of Tom’s output. He has created a wall painting for Electric Picnic, along with four other artists invited to take part in this commission. His wall painting has a special theme, portrayed by doves (鸽子). As well as his anti-war standpoint, he is doing something meaningful. Tom is a founding member of a tree planting project called Trees Please. The group has distributed 10,000 trees in about four years across Ireland.
Humour is also important for Tom in his art. He has done creative work for mental health charities.

Humans have long known that being in nature is good for the mind and body. From indigenous (本土的) adolescents completing the adult ceremony in the wild to modern East Asian cultures taking “forest baths”, many have looked to nature as a place for healing and personal growth. But the question still remains. How can nature make it?
There is no doubt that being in nature reduces the physiological symptoms of stress in our bodies. What this means is that we are less likely to be anxious and fearful in nature, and therefore we can be more open to other people and creative patterns of thought. Also, nature often leads to awe, wonder and respect, all these emotions facilitating everything from physical to mental health. There is also some evidence that exposure to nature impacts the brain. Viewing natural beauty makes specific reward circuits in the brain associated with dopamine release, a chemical that gives us a sense of purpose, joy and energy to pursue our goals.
But, regrettably, people seem to be spending less time outdoors and less time in nature than before. It is also clear that, in the past 30 years, people’s levels of stress and sense of “busyness” have risen dramatically. These joint forces have led environmental writer Richard Louv to coin the term “Nature Deficit Disorder”—a form of suffering that comes from a sense of disconnection from nature and its powers.
Perhaps we should take note and try a course corrective. The 19th century philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote about nature, “There I feel that nothing can befall me in life—no disgrace, no calamity.” The science speaks to Emerson’s intuition. It’s time to realize that nature is more than just a material resource. It’s also a pathway to human health and happiness.
28. Why are “indigenous adolescents” and “modern East Asian cultures” mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To clarify a viewpoint. B. To answer the question below.
C. To present the natural scenery. D. To show the cultural differences.
29. What does the underlined word “facilitating” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Restricting. B. Exposing. C. Promoting. D. Covering.
30. What is the tone of the author in writing paragraph 3?
A. Indifferent. B. Uneasy. C. Humorous. D. Proud.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Is It Time to Challenge Yourself in Nature?
B. Do You Know Nature Is a Material Resource?
C. Why Do We Care about the Natural Environment?
D. What Can Happen When We Connect with Nature?
D
Research led by ecologist Bart Hoekstra of the University of Amsterdam shows that birds are affected by the mass use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve up to a distance of 10 km (6 miles) away.
With data from weather radars and bird counts an international team of researchers revealed how many birds take off immediately after the start of the fireworks, at what distance from fireworks this occurs and which species groups mainly react. “Birds take off as a result of an acute flight response due to sudden noise and light. We already knew that many water birds react strongly, but now we also see the effect on other birds throughout the Netherlands, ”says ecologist Bart Hoekstra of the University of Amsterdam. In the scientific journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, the researchers therefore argue for large fireworks-free zones.
Last year, other researchers at IBED discovered that geese are so affected by fireworks that they spend an average of 10% longer looking for food than normal during at least the next 11 days. They apparently need that time to restore their energy to their former condition, after fleeing from the fireworks.
Because 62% of all birds in the Netherlands live within a radius of 2. 5 km of inhabited areas, the consequences of fireworks are high for all birds throughout the country. “Flying requires a lot of energy, so ideally birds should be disturbed as little as possible during the cold winter months. Measures to ensure this are especially important in open areas such as grasslands, where many larger birds spend the winter. The effects of fireworks on birds are less pronounced near forests and semi-open habitats. In addition, smaller birds such as tits and finches live there, which are less likely to fly away from disturbance.”
The authors argue for fireworks-free zones in areas where large birds live. Hoekstra: “These buffer zones could be smaller in areas where light and sound travel less far, such as near forests. Furthermore, fireworks should mainly be lit at central locations in built-up areas, as far away from birds as possible. It would be best for birds if we moved towards light shows without sound, such as drone shows or decorative fireworks without very loud bangs.”
32. What can we learn about the research?
A. It’s the first one about fireworks’ effects on birds.
B. It’s conducted by collecting data from weather radars.
C. It shows the extent of the fireworks’ influence on birds.
D. It keeps track of birds throughout Netherlands and beyond.
33. Why did geese spend more time looking for food?
A. To make up for the lost energy. B. To store more food in case.
C. To find a new source of energy. D. To find a place without fireworks.
34. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in Para. 4 mean?
A. Predictable. B. Noticeable. C. Admirable. D. Avoidable.
35. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Panic in the air. B. Fireworks-free zones.
C. Fireworks in the world. D. Birds throughout the country.

Throughout the cultures of the world, wisdom has been considered one of the most admirable human qualities. Although the truly wise may seem few and far between, research suggest that it isn’t an exceptional quality possessed by a small handful of bearded philosophers a feral. ____36____
“It appears that experiential, situational, and cultural factors are even more powerful in shaping wisdom than previously imagined,” says Associate Professor Igor Grossmann of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. “Recent findings suggest that people’s ability to reason wisely varies dramatically a across situational contexts. ____37____ Understanding the role of such contextual factors offers unique insights into understanding wisdom in daily life, as well as how it can be enhanced and taught.”
____38____ Grossmann and his colleagues, however, have identified four key characteristics, as part of a framework of wise reasoning. One is intellectual humility or recognition of the limits of our own knowledge, and another is appreciation of perspectives wilder than the issue at hand. Sensitivity to the possibility of change in social relations is also key, along with compromise or integration of different attitudes and beliefs.
Grossmann and his colleagues have also found that one of most reliable ways to support wisdom in our own day-to-day decisions is to look at situations from a third-part perspective ____39____ Research suggests that when adopting a first-person viewpoint we focus on “the focal features of the environment” and when we adopt a third-person, “observer” viewpoint we reason more broadly and focus more on interpersonal and moral ideals such as justice and impartiality. ____40____
A. as if giving advice to a friend.
B. for instance, negotiating a contract with a customer.
C. Coming up with a definition of wisdom is challenging.
D. Some situations are more likely to promote wisdom than others.
E. Actually, the latest studies suggest most of us have the ability to make wise decisions, given the right context.
F. In other words, wisdom is not solely an “inner quality” but rather unfolds as a function of situations people happen to be in.
G. Looking at problems from this more expansive viewpoints appears to cultivate cognitive processes related to wise decisions.

Chicken Soup for Every Mom’s Soul
It had been a long and exhausting day. My husband was out of town for the third night in a row, the house was a mess, the phone kept ringing, laundry and papers were everywhere, my six-year-old twins were screaming, and my head was pounding.
“Mom, Jake came in my room!”
“I did not!”
“Yes, you did … Mom—he’s not listening!”
“You’re not the boss of me!”
“But it’s my room!”
“So what! Who do you think you are, Princess Tara or something?”
“Mom, Jake is calling me Princess Tara again! Mom!”
I screamed, “Stop it, you two!” Rather than quiet them, my loud reprimand caused their voices to escalate.
“BUT MOM, I TOLD HIM TO GET OUT OF MY ROOM!”
“BUT MOM, SHE COMES IN MY ROOM SOMETIMES WHEN I TELL HER NOT TO. . . .”
I asked my children to work it out between themselves and decided to find a quiet room for a few moments.
Within a minute they burst in.
“Mom, she won’t share her Disney characters.”
“Well, that’s because you didn’t share your markers with me the last time I asked you, right, Mom?”
“Mom?”
“Mom?”
I gathered my children and whispered, “Jake and Tara, let’s go hug each other quietly for a few moments. I don’t feel very well. I’m also feeling sad right now.”
Their response was quite different than when I had shouted at them to quiet down. With rather serious looks on their faces, they asked, “But why are you sad, Mom?”
“I don’t really know,” I replied. “I just know I need some quiet time and some extra special love from both of you right now.”
“Okay, Mommy,” they whispered. With a big hug and some “I love you’s,” they said, “Okay, Mommy, you just relax here a few minutes.” As they walked away, I heard a lot of excited, mysterious whispers.

Paragraph 1:
A few minutes later they were back. They turned the lights down low, told me to relax on my bed. Next, they massaged me—first my back, then my legs and arms. My body was sinking into the bed, and I felt totally at peace. They slowly massaged my feet and neck. I felt truly loved. All the anxiety of the day disappeared. “This is what you do for us every night, Mommy. Tonight’s your turn,” they said affectionately. Were those really the same children I had spent the day with?
Paragraph 2:
Just when I thought the massage (按摩) was over, they took turns brushing my hair. I was in heaven. What did I do to deserve this? I felt more relaxed than I had in a long time. As I thought it over, I realized that rather than scream for quiet that I expected better behavior, I had simply taken a moment to share my need with my children. I had asked for some special nurturing, and thankfully, they were loving enough to give it. “Thank you, my darlings. I love you both so much,” I whispered. “Tonight, you didn’t just give me a massage—you taught me how powerful love can be.”

【答案】17.A 18.C 19.A 20.B
M: Hello! My name is Harry Menzies. I ordered a pool table online from your shop last Tuesday and it arrived only three days later. I was amazed and very happy at the speed of service, although the outer packing was a little damaged. Then, unfortunately, the problems started.
I had to put together the pool table and this was quite difficult. The first major complaint I have is that the instruction booklet included was written only in Spanish and Polish. I don’t think this is very helpful for me. I can’t believe you wouldn’t include the instructions in English. Anyway, I managed to follow the diagrams and get the pool table put together in about two hours.
Once I had put it together, I noticed the white ball wasn’t there. How am I supposed to be able to play any games without the white ball? It’s obvious that the table was faulty.
The roll of the balls was not very true — they kept curving to the left or the right so I think there’s a problem with the table. So I don’t want to spend $800 for a pool table that can’t be used!
My customer number is 45993. The order number was GH12388. You can get in touch with me on my home phone number: 348-28841. Please get in touch with me as soon as possible to let me know how we can resolve these problems.
I really hope to hear from you as soon as possible.

He can treat heavy subjects with irony, often employing an aggressive combination of lively colors and animals with wistful expressions communicating the importance of respect, peace, understanding and love. He has done creative work for mental health charities.
Tom was born with a love for art. He enjoys playing musical instruments in public, like the violin. He gets lots of smiles from people. He also sings and has an online channel featuring his songs, which are very improvised (即兴的). All this creativity is a lifeline for him, who believes that art is a necessity rather than a luxury.

A 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据第一段“Humans have long known that being in nature is good for the mind and body. From indigenous(本土的) adolescents completing the adult ceremony in the wild to modern East Asian cultures taking “forest baths”, many have looked to nature as a place for healing and personal growth. But the question still remains. How can nature make it?”(人类早就知道身处大自然对身心都有好处。 故选A项。
根据第二段中“There is no doubt that being in nature reduces the physiological symptoms of stress in our bodies.”(毫无疑问,在大自然中可以减少我们身体中压力的生理症状。)以及“There is also some evidence that exposure to nature impacts the brain.”(还有一些证据表明,接触大自然会影响大脑。)
根据第三段“But, regrettably, people seem to be spending less time outdoors and less time in nature than before. It is also clear that, in the past 30 years, people’s levels of stress and sense of “busyness” have risen dramatically. These joint forces have led environmental writer Richard Louv to coin the term “Nature Deficit Disorder”—a form of suffering that comes from a sense of disconnection from nature and its powers.”(但是,令人遗憾的是,人们花在户外和大自然中的时间似乎比以前少了。
根据文章大意以及第一段中“From indigenous(本土的) adolescents completing the adult ceremony in the wild to modern East Asian cultures taking “forest baths”, many have looked to nature as a place for healing and personal growth. But the question still remains. How can nature make it?”(从在野外完成成人仪式的土著青少年到现代东亚文化中的“森林浴”,许多人都将大自然视为治愈和个人成长的地方。

C 33. A 34. B 35. A
根据第一段“Research led by ecologist Bart Hoekstra of the University of Amsterdam shows that birds are affected by the mass use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve up to a distance of 10 km (6 miles) away. (阿姆斯特丹大学的生态学家巴特·胡克斯特拉领导的研究表明,除夕夜大量燃放烟花爆竹会影响到10公里(6英里)外的鸟类。)”可知,这项研究告诉读者燃放烟花对鸟类的影响程度。故选C。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段“Last year, other researchers at IBED discovered that geese are so affected by fireworks that they spend an average of 10% longer looking for food than normal during at least the next 11 days. They apparently need that time to restore their energy to their former condition, after fleeing from the fireworks. (去年,IBED的其他研究人员发现,鹅受到烟花的影响很大,至少在接下来的11天里,它们寻找食物的时间平均比正常情况长10%。在逃离烟火之后,他们显然需要时间将精力恢复到以前的状态。)”可知,在逃离烟花之后,它们需要这段时间来补充失去的精力,以恢复到以前的状态。故选A。
根据第四段中“Because 62% of all birds in the Netherlands live within a radius of 2.5 km of inhabited areas, the consequences of fireworks are high for all birds throughout the country.
通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Research led by ecologist Bart Hoekstra of the University of Amsterdam shows that birds are affected by the mass use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve up to a distance of 10 km(6 miles)away. (阿姆斯特丹大学的生态学家巴特·胡克斯特拉领导的研究表明,除夕夜大量燃放烟花爆竹会影响到10公里(6英里)外的鸟类)”可知,文章主要介绍了烟花对鸟类的影响。A选项中in the air 暗指鸟类,panic 指烟花带来的影响,故选项A“Panic in the air (空气中弥漫着恐慌)”为最佳答案。故选A。

E 37. F 38. C 39. A 40. G
36.前文“Although the truly wise may seem few and far between, research suggest that it isn’t an exceptional quality possessed by a small handful of bearded philosophers a feral. (虽然真正有智慧的人似乎少之又少,但研究表明,这并不是少数大胡子哲学家或野人所拥有的特殊品质)”指出智慧并非少数人拥有的特殊品质,因此E项“Actually, the latest studies suggest most of us have the ability to make wise decisions, given the right context. (事实上,最新的研究表明,在适当的环境下,我们大多数人都有能力做出明智的决定)”符合语境,指出大多数人都能做出明智的决定,承接前文。故选E。
37.前文“Recent findings suggest that people’s ability to reason wisely varies dramatically a across situational contexts. (最近的研究结果表明,人们的理性推理能力在不同的情境下变化很大)”指出理性推理能力会随情境变化,因此F项“In other words, wisdom is not solely an “inner quality” but rather unfolds as a function of situations people happen to be in. (换句话说,智慧不仅仅是一种“内在品质”,而是随着人们所处环境的变化而展现出来的)”符合语境,解释智慧会随着人们所处环境的变化而展现出来,承接前文。故选F。
38.后文“Grossmann and his colleagues, however, have identified four key characteristics, as part of a framework of wise reasoning. (然而,Grossmann和他的同事们已经确定了四个关键特征,作为明智推理框架的一部分)”和前文有转折,提到研究人员确定了明智推理框架中的四个关键特征,因此C项“Coming up with a definition of wisdom is challenging. (给智慧下一个定义是很有挑战性的)”符合语境,指出很难给智慧下定义,和后文构成转折。故选C。
39.前文“Grossmann and his colleagues have also found that one of most reliable ways to support wisdom in our own day-to-day decisions is to look at situations from a third-part perspective (Grossmann和他的同事们还发现,在我们自己的日常决策中,支持智慧的最可靠方法之一是从第三方的角度来看待情况)”指出从第三方的角度来看待情况有助于做出明智决定,因此A项“as if giving advice to a friend. (就像给朋友提建议一样)”符合语境,是方式状语,指出这就像给朋友提建议一样,承接前文。故选A。
40.前文“Research suggests that when adopting a first-person viewpoint we focus on “the focal features of the environment” and when we adopt a third-person, “observer” viewpoint we reason more broadly and focus more on interpersonal and moral ideals such as justice and impartiality.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2:
Just when I thought the massage (按摩) was over, they took turns brushing my hair.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I was amazed and very happy at the speed of service. Although the outer packing was a little damaged then, unfortunately the problems started. I had to put together the pool table, and this was quite difficult. The first major complaint I have is that the instruction booklets included was written only in spanish in polish. I don't think this is very helpful for me. I can't believe you wouldn't include the instructions in english anyway. I managed to follow the diagrams and get the pool table put together in about two hours. Once I had put IT together, I noticed the White ball wasn't there. How am I supposed to be able to play any games without the White ball? It's obvious that the table was faulty. The role of the balls was not very true. They kept curving to the left or the right. So I think there's a problem with the table. So I don't want to spend eight hundred dollars for a pool table that can be used. My customer number is four, five, nine, nine, three. The order number was G, H, one, two, three, eight, eight. You can get in touch with me on my home phone number, three, four, eight, two, eight, eight, four, one. Please get in touch with me as soon as possible to let me know how we can resolve these problems. I really hope to hear from you as soon as possible. Hello, my name is Harry menzies. Visitors can ask as many questions as possible about the Roswell incident of 1947, and know about what was spotted in the sky that fateful night. Exhibits include information on the event, crop circles, other UFO sightings, Area 51, and so on.
He can treat heavy subjects with irony, often employing an aggressive combination of lively colors and animals with wistful expressions communicating the importance of respect, peace, understanding and love. He has done creative work for mental health charities.

He also sings and has an online channel featuring his songs, which are very improvised (即兴的). All this creativity is a lifeline for him, who believes that art is a necessity rather than a luxury.

Three packs of cigarettes were lying there on the pavement. I picked them up and pocketed them. Later, in a bar, when I opened the first pack, I found, to my ____41____, the twenty cigarettes were there.
I’m still at the bar, telephone in one hand and the cigarettes in the other. I’m dialing Shubentsov, who told me to call the moment I felt the urge to ____42____. I feel it even stronger than I felt Shubentsov’s healing energy. That’s saying something, since Shubentsov is known for curing smokers of their nasty habit, using a ____43____ method. He sent his healing energy from his fingertips, he tells me —something he picked up from another man in Russia. “I help you for free,” he told me in his muddy accent. “Just call me ____44____.”
I went to see Shubentsov. I think it’s time to ____45____ because I’m getting old, and I can’t keep doing this to myself. But here’s the real problem. I should quit, but like a lot of you ____46____ with the same habit, I really don’t want to.
Smoking has been very good to me. Cigarettes have never let me down, never abandoned me on lonely, desperate nights. Smoking ____47____ my head, helps me think. Smoking helps me celebrate victories, get over losses, and comfort the comfortless. It also chases away the mosquitoes.
I will ____48____soon. My body and my mind are demanding that, daily.
I claim to smoke for pleasure, but I realize that slowly I’m losing control of this close, special friend. I ____49____ that. I realize it’s not just a “habit”. I’m ____50____.
So here I am, attempting to ____51____ again, at Shubentsov’s place. I’ve tried all the other quitting techniques ____52____. Anytime the urge to smoke ____53____, he said, just call him immediately. The funny thing is, I realize that I’m not phoning him to stop me from lighting up. I’m phoning him so I can. If I call, I’ll have done my part. Then I can smoke this cigarette.
