I’m not a fan of patchwork quilts While I appreciate the feelings and effort put into making them, I usually don’t really care about the end result. Surprisingly, however, there is a small patchwork quilt in my home.
This quilt originally belonged to my mother. In her later years, after my father passed away, she joined a weekly ‘book club’ with some women from the neighborhood. In fact, it was more of an excuse to get together and drink coffee. One of the ladies, Emily, was skilled in handicrafts and she made my mother a small quilt.
For years, this quilt sat folded on a chair in my mom’s living room. It went with her when she moved to a small, one-bedroom suite at an assisted living facility I never saw my mother use it throughout all those years.
During one of my visits, I playfully teased (取笑) my mom about her never using the quilt and asked her why she kept it. She said it was because it was a gift from Emily. I questioned further, as she was not particularly close to Emily and did not even like the quilt’s design. Her response remained the same: Because it was from Emily.
After thinking this over for several days, I came to realize that the quilt’s value did not lie in its appearance or in its maker, but rather in the significance it held for my mother about neighborliness, community and caring for one another.
I inherited (继承) the quilt more than a decade ago and it has remained folded on a shelf ever since. My plan is to one day gift it to my daughter, but I won’t pressure her to keep it, although I’m secretly hoping she will.
Patchwork quilts hold stories. The tales we attach to what we see and do enrich our lives, turning the ordinary into something magical.

43. Why did the author’s mother keep the quilt for years without using it?
A. She found it too beautiful to use.
B. She planned to give it to her daughter.
C. It reminded her of the weekly book club.
D. It represented the values of community and care.
44. What did the author do with the quilt after inheriting it?
A. The author gave it away to a friend.

根据第二段中的“In her later years, after my father passed away, she joined a weekly ‘book club’ with some women from the neighborhood. In fact, it was more of an excuse to get together and drink coffee.(在我父亲去世后的晚年,她加入了社区里一些妇女每周一次的“读书俱乐部”。事实上,这只是她们聚在一起喝咖啡的一个借口。)”可知,作者的母亲参加“读书俱乐部”的真正目的是为了与邻居们社交。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“She said it was because it was a gift from Emily. I questioned further, as she was not particularly close to Emily and did not even like the quilt’s design. Her response remained the same: Because it was from Emily.(她说这是因为它是Emily送的礼物。我进一步追问,因为她与Emily并不特别亲近,甚至不喜欢被子的设计。她的回答依然如故:因为它是Emily送的。)”以及第五段中的“I came to realize that the quilt’s value did not lie in its appearance or in its maker, but rather in the significance it held for my mother about neighborliness, community and caring for one another.(我意识到,被子的价值不在于它的外观或制作者,而在于它对母亲关于邻里关系、社区和相互关怀的意义。)”
根据文章倒数第二段中的“I inherited the quilt more than a decade ago and it has remained folded on a shelf ever since.(我十多年前继承了这块被子,从那以后它一直折叠在架子上。)”
The tales we attach to what we see and do enrich our lives, turning the ordinary into something magical.(拼缝被子承载着故事。我们赋予所见所为的故事丰富了我们的生活,将平凡变为神奇。)”可以推断,最后一段的大意是普通的物品通过我们讲述的故事变得非凡。故选C项。

Most people suffer from what is known as “Just-me-ism”. What is that? Well say you leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, leave a light on when you go out or you drop a piece of litter (垃圾) and can’t be bothered to pick it up. You know that all those things are wrong. But so what? “What difference can it possibly make?” you say to yourself. There are millions of people in the world and I’m just me. How can it matter if I leave one little tap running, one little light on or leave a little piece of litter on the road? “And anyway, no one will know,” Of course, it wouldn’t matter if there were just a few people in the world. But just think of all the millions of people saying to themselves: “It doesn’t matter. It’s just me. And, anyway, no one knows.” Millions of gallons of water would be wasted; millions of lights would be left on; millions of pieces of litter would be dropped. And all of this would be very harmful.
To inspire young people to take action for the environment, animals and their community, Roots & Shoots was established. This institute was set up in the early 1990s by Dr. Jane Goodall, a scientist who’s the world’s best-known expert on wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩). In addition to her research, she has been whole-heartedly committed to environmental protection, the whole purpose of Roots & Shoots is to educate young people, from preschoolers to university students, so they can help to build a future that is secure and live together in peace with nature. The organization is called Roots & Shoots because roots (根) move slowly under the ground to make a firm (坚实的) foundation, and shoots seem small and weak, but they can break open brick walls to reach the light. The roots and shoots are you, your friends and young people all around the world. Hundreds and thousands of roots and shoots can solve the problems, change the world and make it a better place to live in.
Do you think you help to make the world a better place when you make a sad person smile, when you make a dog wag (摇摆) its tail, and when you water a thirsty plant? One cheered-up person, one happy dog, one flowering plant, and you. That’s what Roots & Shoots is all about: the value and importance of each individual — human, animal or plant. Dr. Jane Goodall believes that the most important thing is that: “Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference. You get to choose: Do you want to use your life to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment? Do you want to make Roots & Shoots rooted in everyone’s heart? Do you want to be a part of a community for a shared future? You cannot be absent.”
46. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. I can do whatever I like and nobody knows.
B. I’m unique and no one realizes it.
C. I’m lonely. And, no one in the world knows me.
D. This is who I am. And, I don’t want people to know me.
47. The ultimate goal of Dr. Jane Goodall is to________.
A. establish Roots & Shoots
B. educate people to build a safer future
C. commit to environmental protection
D. guide young people to create a future in harmony with nature
48. According to Dr. Jane Goodall, who are the shoots?
A. All the people. B. The youth. C. Adults. D. Our friends.
49. What is Dr. Jane Goodall’s attitude towards the role of the individual?
A. Wait-and-see. B. Skeptical. C. Admiring. D. Encouraging.
50. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce Roots & Shoots.
B. To point out the disadvantages of “Just-me-ism”.
C. To call on young people to join Roots & Shoots.
D. To call people to pay more attention to animals and plants.
A 47. D 48. B 49. D 50. C

根据第一段“Well, say you leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, leave a light on when you go out or you drop a piece of litter (垃圾) and can’t be bothered to pick it up. You know that all those things are wrong. “But so what? What difference can it possibly make?” you say to yourself. There are millions of people in the world and I’m just me. How can it matter if I leave one little tap running, one little light on or leave a little piece of litter on the road? And anyway, no one will know,” Of course, it wouldn’t matter if there were just a few people in the world. But just think of all the millions of people saying to themselves: “It doesn’t matter. It’s just me. And, anyway, no one knows. 故选A项。
根据第二段“To inspire young people to take action for the environment, animals and their community, Roots & Shoots was established. This institute was set up in the early 1990s by Dr. Jane Goodall,a scientist who’s the world’s best-known expert on wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩). 【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The organization is called Roots & Shoots because roots (根) move slowly under the ground to make a firm (坚实的) foundation, and shoots seem small and weak, but they can break open brick walls to reach the light. The roots and shoots are you, your friends and young people all around the world. (这个组织被称为“根与芽”,因为根在地下缓慢移动,形成坚实的基础,而芽看起来又小又弱,但它们可以穿破砖墙,到达阳光下。根和芽是你,你的朋友和世界各地的年轻人)”可知,根据简·古道尔所说,芽指的是看起来又小又弱但是拥有力量的年轻人。故选B项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“That’s what Roots & Shoots is all about: the value and importance of each individual — human, animal or plant.Dr. Jane Goodall believes that the most important thing is that:“Every individual matters.Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.(这就是“根与芽”的全部内容:每个人——人类、动物或植物——的价值和重要性。简·古道尔认为,最重要的是:“每个人都很重要。每个人都有自己的角色。每个人会有所作为)”可知,简·古道尔认为每个人都很重要,每个人都能带来改变,由此可推断,简·古道尔对于个人的态度是鼓励性的。故选D项。
【50题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“To inspire young people to take action for the environment, animals and their community, Roots & Shoots was established. (为了激励年轻人为环境、动物和他们的社区采取行动,根与芽成立了)”,最后一段“Do you want to make Roots & Shoots rooted in everyone’s heart? Do you want to be a part of a community for a shared future? You cannot be absent.(你想让根与芽植根于每个人的心中吗?你想要成为命运共同体的一部分吗?你不能缺席)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了由Jane Goodall博士创立的Roots & Shoots组织,旨在教育年轻人为环境、动物和社区采取行动,强调了每个人的重要性,呼吁大家参与到这个共同构建美好未来的社区中来。因此,文章的目的是为了介绍Roots & Shoots并号召年轻人加入其中。故选C项。

There are a fair few benefits of waking up early. There is increasing evidence (证据) that suggests morning people could be healthier. According to a new study, women in particular who wake up earlier could be less likely to develop depression. Researchers wanted to see if a woman’s chronotype (睡眠类型) — whether they were an “early bird” or “night owl” — had any influence on their risk of depression (抑郁).
They used data from a large study that recorded the health of more than 32.000 female nurses in the US, with an average age of 55 for-nearly thirty years. In 2009, they were asked to tell whether they were a morning or evening person, then they followed up after four years to see how many of them developed depression. During that time there were 2,581 new cases of depression, and those morning types were somewhere between 12 and 27% less likely to develop depression.
The results show that someone’s chronotype could be a reason for developing depression, but the risk is small. The study was based on a special group of people, who are in a highly emotionally and energetically demanding job, and so there is no certainty that the risk of depression is influenced by their sleeping habits. The results are not necessarily suitable for other women of the same age, or men, or children, either.
However, the study does raise some interesting points of discussion. For example, recent research found that disrupting (干扰) our body clock can increase our risk of mood disorders like depression. Nurses work long hours and they often work at night. That may cause psychological problems.
Research has also found that too much sleep and too little sleep are both likely to be bad for your health, and the best way to make sure you’re getting the right amount is to stick to a schedule. That means that even if you have a late night, you should try and get up at the same time every day.
While the answer isn’t as simple as early birds being healthier than night owls, what is clear is that sleep is important to avoiding diseases.
51. Which of the following is TRUE about the research?
A. The subjects of it are all female nurses all over the world.
B. Researchers have followed the subjects for nearly thirty years.
C. Those people who got up early were less likely to have depression.
D. Those people who aged over 55 were more likely to develop depression.
52. What can we infer from the study results?
A. They are one-sided. B. They are useless.
C. They are correct. D. They are reasonable.
53. According to the passage, nurses are at risk of psychological problems because ______.
A. they have much work to do B. their body clock is disordered
C. they always sleep late D. their sleep time is short
54. What does the fifth paragraph mainly suggest?
A. Working less time. B. Not working late at night.
C. Sleeping as long as possible. D. Keeping the body clock.
55. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The benefits of waking up early. B. Is sleeping earlier better than late?
C. Nurses are likely to have depression D. Can keeping early hours prevent depression?
C 52. A 53. B 54. D 55. D

根据第一段“There is increasing evidence (证据) that suggests morning people could be healthier. According to a new study, women in particular who wake up earlier could be less likely to develop depression.(越来越多的证据表明,早起的人可能会更健康。根据一项新的研究,特别是早起的女性,她们患抑郁症的可能性较小。)”可知,研究发现那些早起的人不太可能患抑郁症,故选C项。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The study was based on a special group of people, who are in a highly emotionally and energetically demanding job, and so there is no certainty that the risk of depression is influenced by their sleeping habits. The results are not necessarily suitable for other women of the same age, or men, or children, either(这项研究是基于一个特殊人群进行的,他们从事的是高度需要情绪投入和能量消耗的工作,因此,无法确定他们患抑郁症的风险是否受睡眠习惯的影响。研究结果也不一定适用于其他同龄女性,或男性,或儿童)”可推理出,研究结果是片面的,故选A项。
【53题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“For example, recent research found that disrupting (干扰) our body clock can increase our risk of mood disorders like depression. Nurses work long hours and they often work at night. That may cause psychological problems.(例如,最近的研究发现,扰乱我们的生物钟会增加我们患抑郁症等情绪障碍的风险。护士工作时间长,而且经常需要在夜间工作。这可能引发心理问题。)”可知,护士有心理问题的风险是因为他们的生物钟紊乱了,故选B项。
【54题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Research has also found that too much sleep and too little sleep are both likely to be bad for your health, and the best way to make sure you’re getting the right amount is to stick to a schedule(研究还发现,睡眠过多和过少都可能对健康不利,而确保睡眠适量的最佳方法是坚持一个固定的时间表)”可知,第五段建议要保持生物钟,故选D项。
根据第一段“Researchers wanted to see if a woman’s chronotype (睡眠类型) —whether they were an “early bird” or “night owl” —had any influence on their risk of depression(研究人员希望了解女性的时间类型——无论是“早起的鸟儿”还是“夜猫子”——是否对她们患抑郁症的风险有任何影响)”、第三段“The study was based on a special group of people, who are in a highly emotionally and energetically demanding job, and so there is no certainty that the risk of depression is influenced by their sleeping habits. The results are not necessarily suitable for other women of the same age, or men, or children, either(这项研究是基于一个特殊人群进行的,他们从事的是高度需要情绪投入和能量消耗的工作,因此,无法确定他们患抑郁症的风险是否受睡眠习惯的影响。研究结果也不一定适用于其他同龄女性,或男性,或儿童)”、倒数第三段“For example, recent research found that disrupting (干扰) our body clock can increase our risk of mood disorders like depression. Nurses work long hours and they often work at night. That may cause psychological problems.( 例如,最近的研究发现,扰乱我们的生物钟会增加我们患抑郁症等情绪障碍的风险。护士工作时间长,而且经常需要在夜间工作。这可能引发心理问题。)”以及最后一段“While the answer isn’t as simple as early birds being healthier than night owls, what is clear is that sleep is important to avoiding diseases.(尽管答案并不像早起的鸟儿比夜猫子更健康那么简单,但明确的是睡眠对避免疾病很重要。)”
Kevin Beard is my class instructor. Most week, I’d greet Kevin as he set up gloves, mats, and other equipment. So I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing” and “accomplishment.” I realized his tears weren’t out of sadness, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED ( General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a Sheriff’s department Amazingly, when he made a clean breast (坦白说出) of his education, they said they would hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about having another chance.
Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), and he did it for more than a decade , learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to “climbing a mountain”. In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress. “I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,” he said.
Finally, he made it. “I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,” he said. “I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.”
This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. He’s on a roll, and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,” he said.

A. The author gave it away to a friend.

Most people suffer from what is known as “Just-me-ism”. What is that? Well, say you leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, leave a light on when you go out or you drop a piece of litter (垃圾) and can’t be bothered to pick it up.
