You could see the shock and happiness in the shoppers’ eyes as they realized that strangers had just paid for them. One woman offered to pay for the next person’s groceries. Another blew Rob a kiss and said, “I love you!” A third said, “That just made my day. ” Another woman cried so much that Mike went around the counter and gave her a hug. “Now you’re going to make me cry as well,” she said. “Let’s truly love our neighbor, whatever that looks like for you.” Rob said later. Mike added that one of the women they had helped that day later contacted them, and said she had been going through a rough time and that day brought the light into her darkest days. Rob said, “We are not from wealthy families, but we want to do something to encourage people to go out and be nice to others. Be kind to a person or smile at someone. ”

About 6 months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there is one personal trainer there that works out. Meanwhile, my little group do our workout. He does his routine with such a quiet determination that he makes it all look very easy, although I know how hard he is working.
A couple of weeks ago, I was watching him do chin ups. I broke away from my group and asked him if I could try a chin-up. I had never tried it before. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to step up to the bar. I pulled myself up without thinking. Once… then twice. That was all I had in me, I having no strength left. I told him that was all I had, so he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for a third and fourth “poll”. A burst of content sweeping over me. I felt strong and good. The next day when I was doing my workout, I asked him to assist me again. Again, I did two. Again on day three. I thought it was disappointing that I could only do two, but when I finished my workout in the gym on day four, he was standing there just waving his hand at me. When I asked him what was up, he said he was impressed with my chin ups. He explained that most people couldn’t do them at all, and that he was impressed by what I could. He further told me that if I practiced every day, I would be doing 5 or 6 in no time. At this point I should probably add that I am 50 years old… and female.
I have a new approach now. I have experienced first hand how good it feels to rush in so innocently. To trust that we can do it and go on to accomplish exactly what we set out to do, as no one tells us we can’t. I’ve learned how crucial it is to support others and ourselves in our attempts and to let them know that we believe they can do it rather than telling them we think that they can’t.
24. How did the author feel after trying her first chin ups?
A. Satisfied. B. Regretful. C. Relieved. D. Ashamed.
25. Why did the trainer wave his hand at the author?
A. Because he was concerned about her health.
B. Because she made an appointment with him.
C. Because she did what most people couldn’t do.
D. Because he felt like pointing out the author’s weakness
26. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Recognizing our restriction. B. Motivating others to achieve goals.
C. Having faith in others’ words. D. Weighing what you can and can’t.
27. Which might be the best title of the text?
A. Walk Out of Comfort Zone B. Because I Believe I Can
C. Say No to Challenges D. Under No Circumstances Can We Quit
A 25. C 26. B 27. B

根据尾段中的“I’ve learned how crucial it is to support others and ourselves in our attempts and to let them know that we believe they can do it rather than telling them we think that they can’t.(我认识到,在我们尝试的过程中,支持他人和自己是多么重要,并让他们知道我们相信他们能做到,而不是告诉他们我们认为他们做不到。)”
通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“To trust that we can do it and go on to accomplish exactly what we set out to do, as no one tells us we can’t. I’ve learned how crucial it is to support others and ourselves in our attempts and to let them know that we believe they can do it rather than telling them we think that they can’t.(相信我们能够做到,并继续完成我们最初设定的目标,因为没有人告诉我们不能。我认识到,在尝试的过程中,支持他人和自己是多么重要,并让他们知道我们相信他们能做到,而不是告诉他们我们认为他们做不到。)”以及上文讲述的作者克服挑战,成功完成引体向上的经历可知,本文通过坚持和自我信任,作者成功做到了一件原本认为不可能的事情,所以题目“因为我相信我能”概括了文章讲述的主题内容,适合作为最佳标题。故选B项。

If you have any broken items or clothes full of holes lying around in your home, bring them to the repair cafe. The Repair Cafe, located within Sulzer Regional Library in Chicago, operates for two hours on the second Saturday of each month, providing a certain time and place for nearby residents to seek assistance with repairing their precious belongings. From rewiring toys to resewing stuffed animals and clothes, the Repair Cafe’s volunteers skilfully tackle various challenges.
The Repair Cafe operates on a nonprofit model, offering its services for free. Furthermore, participants are invited to make voluntary donations, which are then used to purchase specific tools needed for repairs or organize team-building activities for the volunteers.
The concept of the Repair Cafe originated in Amsterdam and was put forward by Martine Postma, a former journalist, in 2009 while writing about waste reduction and prevention. She recognized the lack of repair culture in daily life contributed significantly to the increasing waste problem. Postma established the first Repair Cafe in her neighborhood as a testing ground. The response was overwhelmingly positive, encouraging others to express interest in adopting the model in their communities.
Postma initially worried about finding enough volunteers with the necessary skills, but she discovered that interested individuals with repair expertise (专长) were eager to get involved once the idea became known. Word of mouth played a significant role in attracting talented repairers to the cause.
Looking toward the future, Postma said she hopes that as repair culture is revitalized (复兴), professional repairers will regain their importance, making a living from their skills. She imagines Repair Cafes in every community, creating a global movement to reduce waste and preserve resources.
28. What can we know about the Repair Cafe?
A. It is a community-driven initiative. B. It recycles second-hand items.
C. It operates as a commercial business. D. It focuses on fixing everyday objects.
29. Why was the idea of the Repair Cafe proposed?
A. To set an example for others. B. To deal with resource shortage.
C. To strengthen community ties. D. To reduce waste of resources.
30. What is skilled repairers’ attitude toward Postma’s idea?
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Reserved.
31. What might Postma do next?
A. Launch more meaningful movements. B. Make repairers a popular career choice.
C. Promote the repair culture worldwide. D. Ensure good community development.
D 29. D 30. C 31. C

Whether it’s choosing the size of your morning coffee, swiping through dating profiles, or considering whether to accept a big promotion at work, we’re presented with thousands of choices every day. Considering all the options before making any decision is sensible, and often happens quickly without too much thought. But what if you spend so much time weighing up the possibilities, in so much detail, that you’re actually unable to decide at all?
This loop of overthinking is called decision paralysis, and although it might seem like an insignificant problem, or a slightly irritating personality quirk (怪癖), the truth may not be as you imagine. It could be related to more serious mental health conditions and impact your capacity to deal with everyday stress.
What causes decision paralysis? Several factors play a role. Firstly, sometimes there are genuinely just too many options to choose from! With Google at your fingertips, it’s no wonder it takes you three days to order a new lip balm when there are 10 million search results to sift through. There is also the fear of failure, regret, or making a mistake that could have serious consequences on your work or personal life, as well as personality traits like perfectionism and people-pleasing. Different childhood environments can also contribute.
Because attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and depression affect the brain’s executive function, decision paralysis can be more common for individuals with these conditions. If you think decision paralysis is a symptom of another condition, it’s important to talk to your general practitioner
Talk to someone you trust. You know that thing where you talk through a problem with a friend, and before you’ve even finished explaining it, you’ve realized what the solution is? Verbalizing your options to a trusted pal can make a world of difference when you are in decision paralysis. Just make sure you’re upfront about exactly the kind of support you need.
32. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To provide study results. B. To state arguments.
C. To make a definition. D. To introduce the topic.
33. Which of the following is NOT a cause of decision paralysis?
A. Too many options. B. Fear of failure.
C. Good childhood environment. D. Personality traits like perfectionism.
34. What does the underlined word “Verbalizing” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Writing down. B. Thinking about.
C. Expressing in words. D. Ignoring.
35. What can be inferred from the passage about decision paralysis?
A. It can have a significant impact on one’s life.
B. It only affects people with mental health disorders.
C. It is a symptom of a serious disease.
D. It is easy to overcome by oneself.
D 33. C 34. C 35. A

根据第一段“Whether it’s choosing the size of your morning coffee, swiping through dating profiles, or considering whether to accept a big promotion at work, we’re presented with thousands of choices every day. But what if you spend so much time weighing up the possibilities, in so much detail, that you’re actually unable to decide at all?(无论是选择你早上咖啡的大小,浏览约会资料,还是考虑是否接受工作中的重大晋升,我们每天都会面临成千上万的选择。但是,如果你花了这么多时间如此详细地权衡各种可能性,以至于你实际上根本无法做出决定呢?)”以及下文可知,文章第一段是通过日常例子引出“决策瘫痪”这一话题。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Firstly, sometimes there are genuinely just too many options to choose from! There is also the fear of failure, regret, or making a mistake that could have serious consequences on your work or personal life, as well as personality traits like perfectionism and people-pleasing. Different childhood environments can also contribute.(首先,有时确实有太多的选择可供选择!还有对失败、后悔或犯一个可能对你的工作或个人生活产生严重后果的错误的恐惧,以及像完美主义和取悦他人这样的个性特征。不同的童年环境也会有影响。)”可知,A、B和D项都是决策瘫痪的原因,而文中说的是不同的童年环境有影响,未提及良好的童年环境会导致决策瘫痪,所以C选项Good childhood environment(良好的童年环境)不是原因。故选C项。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“Talk to someone you trust. You know that thing where you talk through a problem with a friend, and before you’ve even finished explaining it, you’ve realized what the solution is? Verbalizing your options to a trusted pal can make a world of difference when you are in decision paralysis.(和你信任的人谈谈。你知道那种情况吗,你和朋友讨论一个问题,甚至在你还没解释完的时候,你就已经意识到解决方案是什么了?当你处于决策瘫痪状态时,向一个值得信赖的朋友Verbalizing你的选择可能会产生很大的不同。)”可知,作者建议你向你信任的人倾诉问题,这里Verbalizing与前面talk through a problem(讨论问题)以及explaining it(解释它)相呼应,意思是“用语言表达”的意思。故选C项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“This loop of overthinking is called decision paralysis, and although it might seem like an insignificant problem, or a slightly irritating personality quirk (怪癖), the truth may not be as you imagine. It could be related to more serious mental health conditions and impact your capacity to deal with everyday stress.(这种过度思考的循环被称为决策瘫痪,尽管它可能看起来像是一个微不足道的问题,或者是一个有点烦人的个性怪癖,但事实可能并不像你想象的那样。它可能与更严重的心理健康状况有关,并影响你应对日常压力的能力。) ”可知,决策瘫痪可能会对一个人的生活产生重大影响。故选A项。

How Wet Weather Affects Human Behavior
“It’s raining. It’s pouring. The old man is snoring (打鼾). He bumped his head when he went to bed, and he couldn’t get up in the morning.” Why couldn’t the old man in the children’s song get up? (Let’s kindly suppose that he just didn’t want to get up.) This was possibly because in the absence of sunlight, the body was still producing the hormone melatonin (褪黑素),which makes people sleepy.
There are many ways that rainfall affects human behavior. ____36____
In 2018, researchers from the University of Minnesota and Lanzhou University published a paper. They proposed that decreased rainfall was influential in social upheaval (社会动荡) and the downfall of the Tang, Yuan and Ming dynasties in ancient China. This is thought to be related to reduced rice cultivation.
____37____ A 2019 New York Times investigation found that murder rates in New York drop significantly on rainy days. Meanwhile, in Britain, Dr. Peter Langmead-Jones of Greater Manchester police published a study in 2023 detailing an analysis of 6.6 million police records over one decade in Manchester. “The research showed that the heavier the rainfall, the lower the recorded crime,” he said.

根据上文“There are many ways that rainfall affects human behavior. (降雨影响人类行为的方式有很多。)”可知,上文提到了降雨会影响人类的行为,结合空后一段描述了雨水减少对人们的影响,推测本句主要是关于将对对人们行为影响的设问。故D选项“但是雨对人的行为和情绪有多大影响呢?”符合语境,故选D。
【37题详解】
根据第三段“They proposed that decreased rainfall was influential in social upheaval (社会动荡) and the downfall of the Tang, Yuan and Ming dynasties in ancient China. This is thought to be related to reduced rice cultivation. (他们提出,降雨减少对社会动荡和中国古代唐、元、明王朝的灭亡有影响。这被认为与水稻种植减少有关。)”以及后文“A 2019 New York Times investigation found that murder rates in New York drop significantly on rainy days.
根据上一段中““The research showed that the heavier the rainfall, the lower the recorded crime,” he said. ( 他说:“研究表明,降雨量越大,犯罪记录就越低。”)”以及后文“This might be because heavy rain stops people from going out to buy alcohol and the reduced alcohol consumption results in fewer crimes. (这可能是因为大雨阻止了人们外出买酒,而减少的酒精消费量导致犯罪减少。)”可知,本段主要继续说明研究降雨与犯罪率的发现,上文提到降雨量越大,犯罪记录就越低,说明两者之间存在联系。故G选项“他还发现大雨和相对较少的暴力犯罪之间有很强的联系。”符合语境,故选G。
【39题详解】
根据上文“One study in 2017 concluded that the behavior of children can predict oncoming storms - they were observed to exhibit their worst behavior when barometric pressure (气压) fell. (2017年的一项研究得出结论,儿童的行为可以预测即将到来的风暴——当气压下降时,他们会表现出最糟糕的行为。)”以及后文“Meanwhile, they report much lower levels of life satisfaction than men on rainy days. (与此同时,她们对下雨天的生活满意度远低于男性。)”可知,上文介绍了儿童对风暴的反应,后文则提到了女性“对下雨天的生活满意度远低于男性”,说明本句主要是在说明女性受到雨水的影响发现。故F选项“另一项研究发现,女性更容易受到雨水的心理影响。”符合语境,故选F。
【40题详解】
根据上文“For all the complaints about rain, it does have some characteristics that hold broad appeal: The sound of raindrops can be very comforting and often features in sleep-inducing relaxation apps. The theory behind this is that the pitter-patter of raindrops is a form of “pink noise.”

It was a cool autumn morning when the school announced the annual sports day. For most students, it was a day of excitement and joy, but for me, it was just another event I wanted to avoid. I had always been the type to shy away from group activities, preferring the company of my books and thoughts.
Our class monitor, Sarah, noticed my unwillingness. She was the very image of enthusiasm and leadership, always trying to bring the class together. One day, she approached me during lunch. “Why don’t you join us for the relay race? It’ll be fun,” she said with a warm smile. I hesitated, but her persistence was hard to ignore.
The next day, Sarah organized a practice session. I unwillingly joined, feeling out of place among my more athletic classmates. As we ran, I tripped and fell, scraping (擦伤) my knee. Embarrassed, I wanted to quit, but Sarah was there in an instant, offering a hand and words of encouragement. “It’s okay, we’re a team,” she said. At this time, other fellow classmates came to encourage me. Their kindness made me feel less alone.
As the days went by I found myself looking forward to the practices. The care and support among my classmates was infectious. I began to see the value of teamwork and the joy of shared experiences. My initial unwillingness melted away, replaced by a newfound sense of belonging.
The anticipation for the sports day filled me with excitement. I dream of the cheers, the applauding crowd, and the thrill of competition. Training hard, I longed to showcase my skills, push my limits, share and feel the joy of victory. This event was more than a game; it means a lot for me. I could not wait to be part of it!

____________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The day I looked forward to came eventually. The air buzzed with cheers as our relay team stepped onto the track. I was seized by tension and unease, my palms sweating constantly. Sarah patted me on my shoulders, giving me encouragement with an inspiring look. A sense of determination crowding in, I raised my head confidently. When the whistle blew, I dashed like an arrow. But my competitors ran rather fast. My teammates’ shouts urged me forward. What made me frustrated was that I didn’t catch up with them. I was the last one to hand over the baton.
Our opponent winning narrowly, I blamed our failure on myself. “If I’d run faster, we could have won.” I murmured, burying my head, with tears of guilt rolling down my checks. Approaching me. Sara said firmly, “We all gave our best!” The team gathered around, echoing her words. So warm was I that I felt incredibly comforted. Later, we shared snacks under a tree, encouraging each other to do it better next year. We were overwhelmed with joy, broad smiles lighting up our faces. It was then that I realized victory wasn’t just about medals; it was the courage to try and the bonds we’d built. Sports Day had taught me to cherish both.

Abstract Views
About Abstract Views
Whether infrared, innovative use of light, or a special lens, Abstract Views is about tapping into a different side of plants and gardens using abstract photography. It’s time to enter a parallel world of artistic expression with limitless possibilities. Judges will be looking for the way in which a special technique elevates the message of that particular green subject. People should not be the main focus of your compositions.
Insights
Previous winners tended to choose one abstract photography technique and execute it perfectly. These photographic techniques included: overlaid images, multiple exposures, intentional movement, infrared, modified lenses, shooting through glass and digital textures. Although abstract photography can seem overwhelmingly complex with too much choice, try experimenting with different techniques then pick the most effective one for the feeling you want to communicate.
Wider Benefits
It’s good to see the world differently and with Abstract Views you have the opportunity to improve skills in abstract photography as well as creative communication. About 6 months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there is one personal trainer there that works out. Meanwhile, my little group do our workout. He does his routine with such a quiet determination that he makes it all look very easy, although I know how hard he is working.
A couple of weeks ago I was watching him do chin ups.
C Because she did what most people couldn’t do.
D. Because he felt like pointing out the author’s weakness
26. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A Recognizing our restriction.

____38____ This might be because heavy rain stops people from going out to buy alcohol and the reduced alcohol consumption results in fewer crimes.
It’s not all good news though. One study in 2017 concluded that the behavior of children can predict oncoming storms - they were observed to exhibit their worst behavior when barometric pressure (气压) fell. ____39____ Meanwhile, they report much lower levels of life satisfaction than men on rainy days.
For all the complaints about rain, it does have some characteristics that hold broad appeal: The sound of raindrops can be very comforting and often features in sleep-inducing relaxation apps. The theory behind this is that the pitter-patter of raindrops is a form of “pink noise.” ____40____ So if it’s raining where you are, the best thing to do may be to have a nap.
A. The number of complaints is relatively low.
B. Sleep is one of the main aspects according to the former study.
C. But how might rain affect social behavior in the modern world?
D. But how much does rain really affect people’s behavior and moods?
E. It can decrease brain activity and consequently improves the quality of sleep.
F. Another study found that women are more likely to be affected psychologically by rain.
G. He also found a strong association between heavy rain and relatively few violent crimes recorded.

As the days went by, I found myself looking forward to the practices.
