Here’s what I remember: The day it happened, I was around 8 years old. It was definitely a Sunday because we never went anywhere on Saturdays. On that day, my dad decided to take me to the Museum of Modern Art to see some paintings. As we were walking in a big room, something on the wall grabbed my eyes.
It was a woodland scene, with some colorful rocks in the foreground and tall trees branching into a blue sky. It had no people or anything extraordinary in it. But with a force, it almost pulled me to it. As I moved closer, it tightened its grip and I could barely move. Nothing like that had ever happened to me.
Wondering where I’d gone, my dad turned around and found me standing a few feet from the image. When he came up behind me, I asked him, “What is this?” And he, without looking for a label, answered, “This is a Cezanne.”
Cezanne is known to produce little worlds that almost lose their balance, but somehow hold themselves together, creating beauty, tension and danger all at once.
But I knew nothing about painting or art history then. To this day, I cannot explain why the crazy painting could appeal to an 8-year-old. The fact that it kept happening — keeps happening, all these 60 years since — is one of the mysteries of my life.
All I can think is that we are born with a sort of mood in us. Deep down, it keeps looking for someone to share itself with. When we come across the right musician, or, in this case, the right artist, then we are pulled into a conversation we’ve apparently been longing to have.
And that’s what happened to me that day. When I left the museum, I felt like I had a personal talk with an artist who had already been dead for 50 years.
4. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. A search for Cezanne’s painting. B. A decision to stay home that day.
C. A “conversation” with a dead artist. D. A trip to the Museum of Modern Art.
5. What did the little boy think of the painting?
A. Amazing. B. Stupid. C. Boring. D. Funny.
6. What does the author suggest in paragraph 6?
A. Most of us feel lonely in the world. B. Anyone can find comfort in nice artworks.
C. Art is a necessity for human beings. D. Human beings are born with a taste for art.
7. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A novel. B. A biography.
C. A science report. D. An artwork review.

About 62m tonnes of electrical items, ranging from computers to mobile phones, were abandoned globally in 2022. Typically, these electrical wastes are either burnt or treated with chemicals, like strong acids, to recover metals.
As these processes produce huge amounts of greenhouse gases and have poisonous by-products that are difficult to clear up, companies are developing a number of cleaner recycling methods. One of the most promising approaches turns to bacteria for help.
Bioleaching, as this process is called, is an old idea: more than 2,000 years ago, the water in copper mines was noticed to turn blue. It was not until the 1950s, though, after bacteria were found to be responsible for the phenomenon, that the process was commercialized to recover leftover material in the liquid.
When used outdoors, the process, though effective, can take months and is not very efficient. Contained within a modern processing plant, however, bioleaching can be sped up. The trick, according to Bioscope Technologies, an urban-mining company building a bioleaching plant in Cambridge, England, is to keep the bacteria in their preferred conditions that include a carefully controlled acidic environment, a warm temperature below 50℃ and a good supply of oxygen in their breeding tanks. Once these bacteria are mixed with the crushed electrical items in a reactor, they digest the metals within a day or two. Having done their stuff, the bacteria are moved to another breeding tank before being used again.
The resulting liquid is then treated in a number of ways to recover the metals. Gold quickly sinks to the bottom with the addition of a little water. An electric current passed through the liquid recovers copper in a manner similar to electroplating.
The process is capable of recovering almost all of the gold, silver, copper and palladium from the crushed electrical items, although the exact amount depends on the type of the items being recycled. PCBs from servers and telecoms equipment tend to contain the most precious metals, household appliances less so. The recovered gold and other metals are pure enough to be used again in electronics.
8. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The development of bioleaching. B. Problems with traditional methods.
C. Varieties of recycling approaches. D. The accidental discovery of bacteria.
9. Which of the following can help speed up bioleaching?
A. Keeping the temperature constant. B. Leaving the breeding tank outdoors.
C. Putting more oxygen in the reactor. D. Creating a very acidic environment.
10. During bioleaching, the electroplating-like method is used to recover ______.
A. gold B. silver C. palladium D. copper
11. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. PCBs contain the most precious metals. B. The recovered metals can be very pure.
C. Different items should be separated first. D. Household appliances should not be recycled.
D
In a recent article, Markham Heid shares with us an unusual life crisis. At 41, he has built what many would regard as the good life: he has a family; he is healthy and has a good job; he has time to travel, read, exercise, and see friends. Yet, he feels that something is missing. What makes Heid’s problem somewhat odd is that it does not seem to relate to anything specific. If he had lost his job, had no time for himself, or was struggling in his marriage, the feeling would be understandable. He ends up attributing his crisis to the lack of new experiences.
In the history of philosophy, there have been many attempts to understand such a powerful but objectless feeling. Boredom, anxiety, depression and despair are some of the descriptions this mood has received. The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard calls it the “illusion of crop rotation”, the idea that changing the environment frequently can save us from this mood.
But what really drives this mood is not the need for new experiences. It is not even the particulars of our individual lives or the cultures we belong to, but that we have been given a life to live in the first place, the taste of possibility that comes with being alive. This mood is not due to doubts like “Do I have enough hobbies?” or “Have I achieved my goal?” It is related to the more fundamental questions like “What does it mean to be human?” “What am I supposed to do with the fact that I was given a life?” and “What kind of life is possible for me?” This is why this mood is likely to appear frequently in our life.
These questions never have a final answer and they can always leave us with a great sense of agony about who we are and how we should go on. Recognizing that these doubts are there, and that they matter, can at least allow us to know what may be missing, even when everything is good.
12. Which of the following can best describe Markham Heid’s crisis?
A. It is caused by uncertainties in life. B. It is a powerful but objectless mood.
C. It has many different and odd names. D. It occurs typically to middle-aged men.
13. What does Soren Kierkegaard most likely suggest Markham Heid do?
A. Talk to old friends. B. Do exercise every day.
C. Study philosophy. D. Go travelling frequently.
14. What does the author imply about the unusual feeling?
A. It is a natural part of being human. B. It is closely related to some cultures.
C. It is determined by our personalities. D. It is mainly driven by our desire for fun.
15. Which is closest in meaning to “agony” in the last paragraph?
A. Achievement. B. Relief. C. Pain. D. Direction.

Long-time sitting is not just bad for our waistlines — it’s hurting our mental health. The good news is that something as simple as some very short and light movement can make a difference.
However, many of us tend to think that if we don’t get two hours a day, then it doesn’t count, or it’s not good enough. “___16___.” says Molly McDonald, a certified personal trainer. “In reality, going from no activity at all to even a little bit of activity is going to get some of the biggest health effects.”
___17___. That includes knowing what’s not realistic for us. “So if you hate running, don’t run just because someone tells you it’s good for you. ___18___.” says McDonald. “There are a lot of options.”
If it’s hard to put aside hours in a day to walk or do any other exercise, try to spend just five minutes every hour on exercising. ___19___. Health guidelines recommend at least 150minutes of moderate exercise every week. And those 40-minute daily activities will help add to the weekly goal.
Light movement is a great start. But every minute of higher-intensity (强度) activity is associated with better health outcomes than every minute of lower-intensity activity. ___20___.
A. Light movement is better than none
B. We should abandon this ‘all or nothing’ thinking
C. If we work eight hours each day, it adds up to 40 minutes a day
D. When we are developing an exercise plan we should know ourselves
E. Think of places which would make it more likely that you’ll stick to the plan
F. Or if you’re not a morning person, then don’t plan to exercise in the morning
G. So if we’ve got five minutes, the more we can do in those five minutes, the better

One day, Nicholas went skiing with his father. They had a wonderful day and decided to go home after a final run. They took a chairlift to the top of the mountain, where they decided to go down on different trails. When Nicholas’ father finished his run, he headed to the parking lot to wait for his son. However, Nicholas never showed up.
It turned out that a windstorm swept into the area as Nicholas was on his way down. Unable to go as planned, he ventured down another side of the mountain. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost and all alone. What’s worse, the food supplies and his cellphone had been left in the car. He only took a bottle of water with him. Fortunately, he happened to have a lighter in one of his pockets.
The sun began to sink and he was getting colder by the minute. But he tried not to panic and thought about Bear Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild that he used to watch on TV. In the show, Grylls is abandoned in a forest at night and has to help himself out. It was time to put the tips he had learned to test.
The first thing he had to do was collect enough dry leaves and branches to build a big fire. It would not only keep him warm but also increase the possibility of being found by the rescuers sent by his father. Using his skis, Nicholas dug the snow under a huge pine tree (松树) and gathered enough dry pine needles. Then he knocked down dead branches from the trees.
Having found a safe place and started the fire, Nicholas felt really hungry. He drank some water and tried to have a rest. Just then a squirrel (松鼠) emerged from a hole under the pine tree and approached the fire curiously.

C 5. A 6. D 7. B

C
A 9. C 10. D 11. B

B. Relief. C. Pain. D. Direction.
B 13. D 14. A 15. C

根据第二段的“The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard calls it the ‘illusion of crop rotation’, the idea that changing the environment frequently can save us from this mood. (丹麦哲学家Soren Kierkegaard称之为“轮作幻觉”,即经常改变环境可以让我们摆脱这种情绪)”可知,Soren Kierkegaard可能会建议Markham Heid经常旅行来改变环境。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“This mood is related to the more fundamental questions like ‘What does it mean to be human?’ ‘What am I supposed to do with the fact that I was given a life?’ and ‘What kind of life is possible for me?’ This is why this mood is likely to appear frequently in our life. (这种情绪与更根本的问题有关,比如“作为人类意味着什么?”“我应该如何对待被赋予的生命?”以及“对我来说,什么样的生活是可能的?”这就是为什么这种情绪可能会在我们的生活中频繁出现)”可知,作者认为这种不寻常的感觉是人类天性的一部分。故选A。
根据最后一段的“These questions never have a final answer and they can always leave us with a great sense of agony about who we are and how we should go on.

B 17. D 18. F 19. C 20. G

故填The。
故填are endangered。
“used to do sth.” 故填to struggle。
此处需要一个词来修饰整个句子 “the movie is a feast for the eyes”,修饰句子要用副词,“visual” 的副词形式是 “Visually”,位于句首首字母需大写。
“the final battle” 是先行词,后面的 “the characters are empowered with amazing weapons like the shape-changing Tianyuan Ding” 是定语从句,先行词在从句中作地点状语,即 “在最后的战斗中”,所以要用关系副词 where 引导定语从句。故填where。
“face difficulties”,“fight for what is right” 和 “value friendship” 是并列关系,在肯定句中连接并列成分用连词 and。故填and。

Thank you for listening!
Dear fellow students,
In order to make PE classes enjoyable and effective, I think the focus should be shifted from passing the examinations with a high score to weaving them into our daily life.
In the past, the main goal of PE classes was to pass the examination, which was very likely to ruin the otherwise fun activities. For example, many students are forced to pass the rope-skipping or pull-up tests. If they are allowed to choose what they enjoy and are good at doing, they will be drawn to the classes and even do more exercise after the classes.
Thank you for listening!

Having eaten the nuts, Nicholas felt much better.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Suddenly, Nicholas had an idea. He remembered what Bear Grylls said in the show: Squirrels often store nuts in hidden spots for the winter. They are a likely food source in the forest. So he decided to search for the hidden nuts. Using his ski, he carefully dug around the hole. To his delight, he found a small pile of nuts. It wasn’t much, but it would help ease his hunger. “Thank you very much, squirrel,” Nicholas said guiltily. “I will pay back after I’m rescued.”
Having eaten the nuts, Nicholas felt much better. He continued to tend to the fire. The warmth and light gave him a sense of security as the darkness closed in. He scanned the surroundings now and then, hoping to see or hear signs of rescuers. About three hours later, a rescue team emerged from the darkness, “The fire has made a real difference!” one of the rescuers said, jokingly, “Perhaps, all youngsters should see the TV series!”
