Natural Disasters Require Special Building Design
Natural disasters happen everywhere in the world. Many cause property damage and loss of life. But researchers say the severity (严重性) of their effects can be reduced if people take steps to prepare.
A new exhibit teaches what governments and individuals can do to lessen the effects. Chrysanthe Broikos organized the exhibit at the National Building Museum. She says large buildings and other structures can survive strong earthquakes if they are built with some level of flexibility. In other words, they need to be able to bend and move as the earth shakes.
“We need to let buildings move and we can actually understand where they might fail, and then go in and design buildings with that in mind.”
One building design is called a “special moment frame”. It enables movement at points where large load-bearing supports join each other. Rubber-based foundation blocks let buildings move, while huge shock absorbers (缓冲器) help to limit the shaking.
The museum exhibit has a model of a wind wall. The model shows how some roofs or tops of buildings are more likely to be destroyed than others because of the strong winds of hurricanes. Chrysanthe Broikos says tests show that a reasonable angled roof is best able to withstand wind storms. In areas with powerful winds, researchers have strongly urged the creation of at least one “safe room”. This is a place where building occupants can spend the most dangerous part of the storm.
Another concern is how to deal with storms and flooding. Some coastal communities in the U.S. have made artificial reefs from oysters (牡蛎) shells instead of rocks. The builders use shells collected from restaurants to create the barriers. Chrysanthe Broikos also suggests setting aside land along the coast for parks instead of housing. She says this is more natural and keeps valuable property away from danger.
As for forest fires, researchers now suggest clearing an area about 60 meters wide around a single-family house.
“What that means is trying to keep that area free of material that easily burns.”
1. What does Chrysanthe Broikos think about the buildings that can survive strong earthquakes?
A. They should be fixed enough. B. Their height needs to be reasonable.
C. Their location is the most important. D. They are mobile and bendable.
2. What does the underlined word “that” in the third paragraph refer ?
A. Lessening the effects. B. Where they might fail.
C. Designing buildings. D. Special moment frame.
3. Which of the following belongs to the measures to deal with storms and flooding ?
A. Don’t build houses along the coast.
B. Set aside land for parking cars.
C. Make artificial reefs from rocks.
D. Raise oysters in large number.
4. What is the passage mainly about ?
A. Different types of natural disasters.
B. Preparations for natural disasters.
C. Reactions to natural disasters.
D. Effects of natural disasters.

Loneliness is significant mental health concern and can raise risk of death by 45% and contact with nature in cities significantly reduces feelings of loneliness, according to a team of scientists.
The study is the first to assess how the environment can affect loneliness. It used real-time data, collected via a smartphone app, rather than relying on people’s memory of how they were feeling.
The research found that feelings of overcrowding increased loneliness by an average of 30%. But when people were able to see trees or hear birds, feelings of loneliness fell by 28%. Feelings of social inclusion also cut loneliness by 21% and when these feelings coincided(巧合) with contact with nature, the beneficial effect was boosted by a further 18%.
The findings pointed to interventions to reduce loneliness. The researchers said, “Specific measures that increase social inclusion-and contact with nature should be taken, especially in thickly populated cities.” Time spent in nature is known to boost well-being, with woodland walks estimated to save the UK at least £185m a year in mental health costs, for example.
The research collected data from urban citizens across the world using the Urban Mind search app. More than 750 people provided 16,600 of these assessments. The participants were self-selecting and so it did not provide a representative sample of the wider populations. But when the researchers took age, education, and occupation into account, the benefits of nature contact and feelings of social inclusion on loneliness remained strongly statistically significant. Johanna Gibbons, part of the research team, said, “Cities are probably the only habitat that is increasing at a high rate. So we should be creating urban habitats where people can thrive(兴旺).”
5. How was the research conducted?
A. By relying on people’s memory.
B. By surveying 750 paricipants.
C. By collecting data through a smartphone app.
D. By checking a worldwide representative sample.
6. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Many big cities take the lead in the research.
B. Time spent indoors improves people’s well-being.
C. Woodland walks greatly reduce social contact with people.
D. Interventions to reduce loneliness benefit the UK financially.
7. What ean be inferred about the research?
A. The findings are statistically markable.
B. It offers a wide range of samples globally.
C. The carefully selected participants are Defiable.
D. Many factors are considered except eduction.
8. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The mental problems of living in big cities.
B. Reducing loncliness in cities via contact with nature.
C. Developing urban habitats at a high speod.
D. Research on how to get rid of loneliness in nature.
【答案】5. C 6. D 7. A 8. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲的是研究表明可以通过与大自然接触来减少城市里的孤独感。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“It used real-time data, collected via a smartphone app, rather than relying on people’s memory of how they were feeling.(它使用通过智能手机应用程序收集的实时数据,而不是依靠人们对自己感觉的记忆)”可知,研究是通过智能手机应用收集数据。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“Time spent in nature is known to boost well-being, with woodland walks estimated to save the UK at least £ 185m a year in mental health costs, for example.(众所周知,花时间在大自然中可以提高幸福感,例如,在林地里散步估计每年给英国节省至少节省£185心理健康的花费)”可知,减少孤独感的干预措施在经济上对英国有利。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“But when the researchers took age, education, and occupation into account, the benefits of nature contact and feelings of social inclusion on loneliness remained strongly statistically significant.(但当研究人员将年龄、教育和职业考虑在内时,自然接触和社会包容感对孤独的益处在统计学上也有着重大的意义)”可知,这项研究从统计学上讲,有着明显的好处。故选A。
【8题详解】

The Stanford marshmallow (棉花糖) test was originally conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged four to six at a nursery school were placed in a room. A single sugary treat, selected by the child, was placed on a table. Each child was told if they waited for 15 minutes before eating the treat, they would be given a second treat. Then they were left alone in the room. Follow-up studies with the children later in life showed a connection between an ability to wait long enough to obtain a second treat and various forms of success.
As adults we face a version of the marshmallow test every day. We’re not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets — all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers.
We are tempted by sugary treats because our ancestors lived in a calorie-poor world, and our brains developed a response mechanism to these treats that reflected their value — a feeling of reward and satisfaction. But as we’ve reshaped the world around us, dramatically reducing the cost and effort involved in obtaining calories, we still have the same brains we had thousands of years ago, and this mismatch is at the heart of why so many of us struggle to resist tempting foods that we know we shouldn’t eat.
A similar process is at work in our response to information. Our formative environment as a species was information-poor, so our brains developed a mechanism that prized new information. But global connectivity has greatly changed our information environment. We are now ceaselessly bombarded (轰炸) with new information. Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our caloric consumption, we also need to be more thoughtful about our information consumption, resisting the temptation of the mental “junk food” in order to manage our time most effectively.
9. What did the children need to do to get a second treat in Mischel’s test?
A. Take an examination alone. B. Show respect for the researchers.
C. Share their treats with others. D. Delay eating for fifteen minutes.
10. According to paragraph 3 there is a mismatch between .
A. the calorie-poor world and our good appetites B. the shortage of sugar and our nutritional needs
C. the rich food supply and our unchanged brains D. the tempting foods and our efforts to keep fit
11. What does the author suggest readers do?
A Absorb new information readily. B. Be selective information consumers.
C. Use diverse information sources. D. Protect the information environment.
12. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Eat Less, Read More B. The Bitter Truth about Early Humans
C. The Later, the Better D. The Marshmallow Test for Grownups
【答案】9. D 10. C 11. B 12. D

根据最后一段“Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our caloric consumption, we also need to be more thoughtful about our information consumption, resisting the temptation of the mental “junk food” in order to manage our time most effectively.(因此,就像我们需要更仔细地考虑我们的热量消耗一样,我们也需要更仔细地考虑我们的信息消耗,抵制精神“垃圾食品”的诱惑, 以便最有效地管理我们的时间)”可知,作者建议读者做选择性信息消费者。故选 B。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“As adults we face a version of the marshmallow test every day. The Ice Cream Truck
“Never give up! Never give up!” chanted two young children, Max and Lily, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mimi who was leading them on a great adventure, straight off the beach where they had spent the day building sand castles and swimming in the sea. They were seeking the mysterious ice-cream truck!
Over the years, Mimi had become an example of positivity for her family. It was not a title she earned without effort, however. Her husband died early and at only forty years old she was left to raise her daughter alone. She faced the heart-breaking disaster powerful enough. She could have lived under a black cloud. But she challenged herself to find joy every day instead. She was always up for a new challenge, whether that was hiking across the rocky mountain in Austria to get a better view of the breathtaking scenery, or signing up for tap-dancing classes at fifty. Leading by example, Mimi taught her daughter just how much one could achieve with a positive attitude.
And obviously she had taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren as well. Before starting her adventure with Max and Lily on that hot July afternoon, Mimi heard the ice-cream man’s bell from her beach chair. She turned and saw him briefly, spotting his green shirt and catching the sight of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared. The ice-cream man visited the beach on a daily basis, although the delay between the sound of his bell and the disappearance of his truck was not long. One must be quick to catch him.
Max and Lily were disappointed when they didn’t catch him in time that day. That was until Mimi’s eyes shone and she said, “Never give up!” She explained that the truck might be gone, but they could hurry up to find it at its next stop.
They walked block after block. Not knowing which direction the truck had taken, they had to make their best guess about where to search. The kids’ tiny legs were tired, but they went on, continuing the chant, “Never give up! Never give up!”
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段, 每段的开头语已为你写好。

Just two blocks later, they found it.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 After about twenty minutes of walking, Max’s faith started to get shaken in the burning sun. He wondered out loud, “Maybe we should quit. We have been walking pretty far and haven’t seen the truck yet.” With that, he collapsed, resting his aching legs and rubbing his sore feet. Mimi bent over and patted him gently on the shoulder. Smiling, she comforted the boy, “Max, remember: winners never quit, and quitters never win”. “Yeah! Never give up!” Lily agreed. Max looked up, thought for a while and jumped to his feet. “You are right. Let’s hurry!” And so they marched on.
Just two blocks later, they found it. The ice-cream truck was parked just around the corner, shining brilliantly in the sunlight, as if waiting to reward the three adventurers with a most generous treat for their patience and determination. “Finally!” Max cried at this sight, throwing a fist in the air, while Lily screamed with excitement. They laughed, cheered, and chanted in chorus, “Never give up!” In that magical moment, Mimi turned that phrase into a battle cry for the children. They would be ready for any challenges upon hearing these words. So never give up; your ice cream truck may be just a block away.

B Set aside land for parking cars.
C. Make artificial reefs from rocks.
D. Raise oysters in large number.
4. What is the passage mainly about ?
A. Different types of natural disasters.
B. Preparations for natural disasters.
C. Reactions to natural disasters.
D. Effects of natural disasters.

Loneliness is significant mental health concern and can raise risk of death by 45% and contact with nature in cities significantly reduces feelings of loneliness according to a team of scientists.

10. According to paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between .
A. the calorie-poor world and our good appetites B. the shortage of sugar and our nutritional needs
C. the rich food supply and our unchanged brains D. the tempting foods and our efforts to keep fit

A. Absorb new information readily. B. Be selective information consumers.
C. Use diverse information sources. D. Protect the information environment.
12. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

If you feel that your sense of time has changed recently, you are not alone. Ottawa's Christina Chenard is one of those folks whose sense of time has been changed, and it has changed her life for the better.
Before the pandemic, she used to run around like a headless chicken: rising extremely early, getting two kids off to daycare, and then rushing to meetings, before coming home to "collapse and start all over again." Now she works mainly at home, and time is opening up.___13___
