We were both huge basketball fans. Paul’s favorite player was Richard. He was only 1.6 meters tall, which made him the shortest player ever in his team. And Paul was only 1.6 meters tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he had to practice more. During all those hours of practicing on his own, he used that player as his inspiration (激励). Paul once said, “If he could make it, why not me?” Our coach was not so sure. Paul was still usually a replacement (替补). It was really painful for him. Everyone knew Paul was someone who worked really hard and had a strong wish to play for the team. However, Paul didn’t get a chance. This week, The Lions were playing against The Bears, a team whose record this season was perfect. Suddenly, a player and I knocked into each other. My knee hurt badly. The team gathered (聚集) around, looking worried. The last quarter was about to begin, and my team was behind by 10 points. “I don’t think I can play anymore, coach,” I said quietly as the doctor checked my knee. “What about Paul?” someone suggested. “Paul?” said the coach. “He can’t play!” “Give him a chance, coach!” I said. “Let me try, coach! I won’t let you down!” Paul said. “OK!” the coach finally agreed. “Don’t let us down, Paul. It’s your time to shine.” Paul jumped up and rushed onto the court (球场). And clearly, all the hours he spent practicing alone paid off. The other team just couldn’t keep up with Paul’s energy and speed. He made it and people couldn’t stop cheering for him. When the game ended, our team won by two points. “Well,” said the coach as he hit Paul on the shoulder, “you’ve just won your place on the team, big boy.” 6. Scientists did a study which showed that dogs can tell the difference between the smell of a person when they’re relaxed and when they’re stressed. All day long, our bodies go through changes and produce different chemicals These chemicals come out in our breath and sweat (汗液), changing the way we smell. But it wasn’t known if stress could cause changes that could be discovered. So the researchers collected breath and sweat samples (样本) from 36 different people. They got samples when the people were relaxed, and also when they were stressed. To stress people out, the scientists asked a really difficult math problem, and forced people to do it in their heads quickly. And they weren’t nice about it. They kept telling them to hurry up. That lasted three minutes. Then the researchers collected two more sweat and breath samples. The scientists used one of the stressed samples, along with two clean pieces of cloth, to train the dogs to find the stressed smell. Then came the challenge (挑战) —the dogs had three choices: a sample from a relaxed person, a stressed sample from that same person, and a clean piece of cloth. In all, the dogs did 720 tests. They correctly identified the stressed sample about 94% of the time. The results make it clear that stress does have a smell that dogs can find. Scientists say the news could be especially useful in training service dogs, since their job is to help people who have stress. 11. Why did the scientists use samples of breath and sweat to test the dogs? A. Because they make our bodies smell different. B. Because our bodies become stronger day by day. C. Because stress could be changed by sweat and breath. D. Because our bodies produce different sweat every day. 12. How does the writer develop the third paragraph? A. By comparing facts. B. By giving examples. C. By describing the steps. D. By showing the findings. 13. What was the challenge for the dog? A. Hundreds of tests. B. A clean piece of cloth. C. The sample from different persons. D. The sample from the same person. 14. What does the underlined word “identified” mean in the text? 15. What is the structure of the passage? (P=Paragraph) A. B. C. D. 【答案】11. A 12. C 13. D 14. D 15. 根据“All day long, our bodies go through changes and produce different chemicals (化学物质). These chemicals come out in our breath and sweat (汗液), changing the way we smell.” 根据“To stress people out, the scientists asked a really difficult math problem, and forced people to do it in their heads quickly. And they weren’t nice about it. They kept telling them to hurry up. That lasted three minutes.” 根据“ Then came the challenge (挑战) —the dogs had three choices: a sample from a relaxed person, a stressed sample from that same person, and a clean piece of cloth.” 根据“They correctly identified the stressed sample about 94% of the time.” D。 D Do you want to learn about Chinese culture? Be Willing to Help Others C If you’ve ever thought that dogs seem to know when people are stressed (有压力的), you were right. 11 Why did the scientists use samples of breath and sweat to test the dogs? A. Because they make our bodies smell different. B. Because our bodies become stronger day by day. C. Because stress could be changed by sweat and breath. D.
