Electronic devices are a blessing and a curse. They have made our lives easier but many of us become too attached. Recognizing their dependence on electronics, a British family decided to do a “detox (排毒)” for a week.
“Wait, can’t I have my smartphone for a week?” Jennings’ 15-year-old daughter asked, but the mom insisted on its benefit. Her 8-year-old son, who was addicted to watching Internet videos, was up for the challenge, but her husband was skeptical. Jennings had to work through the “detox”, so she could keep her laptop. But she and her husband could only use their phones to make calls, not as a morning alarm or anything else.
“Something unusual happened later on the first day. We all spent time together, and it was lovely. We chatted and joked with each other. I think after one day without our devices, we were all blissful,” she wrote.
Jennings’ teen admitted that she used a friend’s phone to check her social media account, but the mom was glad that the teen confessed (坦白). The girl found the experiment “embarrassing” and told her friends that her phone was broken to save face.
Jennings also shared that she and her husband wrote each other notes instead of texting.
She also began calling him frequently, which was really annoying him.
“I’m surprised at all of us managing to go the whole week without our phones and tablets,” Jennings admitted. She was especially proud of her teenager, who described the experience as the most challenging in the family. Ultimately, her son decided to use his tablet less, and her husband became less dependent on his phone. “This has been a really good thing for our family to do,” Jennings wrote. “We have reconnected as a family and that has been truly wonderful.”
4. What is the “detox” of Jennings’ family?
A. Giving up watching Internet videos.
B. Staying away from electronic devices.
C. Beginning to chat and joke together.
D. Contacting each other through notes.
5. What does the underlined word “blissful” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Inactive. B. Careful. C. Happy. D. Uncomfortable.
6. How did Jennings’ daughter respond to the “detox”?
A. She objected to it. B. She tried to make it.
C. She was angry about it. D. She told it to her friends.
7. Which word can best describe the ending?
A. Unexpected. B. Bittersweet. C. Heartbreaking. D. Satisfactory.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一个英国家庭决定进行一周的做一次“排毒”,远离电子设备的故事。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Recognizing their dependence on electronics, a British family decided to do a “detox (排毒)” for a week. (认识到他们对电子产品的依赖,一个英国家庭决定进行一周的“排毒。”)”可知,Jennings一家的“排毒”是远离电子设备。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词句前文“We all spent time together, and it was lovely. We chatted and joked with each other. I think after one day without our devices (我们一起度过了一段美好的时光。我们互相聊天和开玩笑。我想在没有电子设备的一天后)”说明作者一家没有电子设备的一天后,互相聊天和开玩笑,很开心,从而推知划线词句“we were all blissful (我们都感到blissful)”其中划线词应为“开心的,快乐的”的意思,与C项同义。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Jennings’ teen admitted that she used a friend’s phone to check her social media account, but the mom was glad that the teen confessed (坦白). The girl found the experiment “embarrassing” and told her friends that her phone was broken to save face.
根据最后一段““I’m surprised at all of us managing to go the whole week without our phones and tablets,” Jennings admitted.
C
In Iceland, baby Atlantic puffins (海鹦) hatch in cliff side holes and rely on moonlight to find their way to the sea. However, artificial lights from nearby towns often disturb them, causing many to wander into urban areas instead. To handle this, a community-based Puffin Patrol in Heimaey rescues these lost puffins when the birds leave the nest. Equipped with flashlights and cardboard boxes, volunteers search for the birds at night and release them safely to the cliffs the next morning.
Iceland’s Heimaey is home to the world’s largest Atlantic puffin colony. Puffins spend most of their lives at sea, returning to land only to breed (繁殖). During the breeding season, adult puffins lay and hatch eggs, raising a single chick. After about six weeks, the chicks, or puffins, are ready to leave the nests. They leave their holes at night, following the moonlight to the ocean. However, since the town of Vestmannaeyjabær got electricity about 100 years ago, some puffins have been drawn to the town lights, finally getting lost.
The Puffin Patrol rescues these birds, logging their data and releasing healthy ones back to the cliffs. In 2024, they rescued over 4,200 puffins — slightly more than the island’s human population. Some puffins need extra care, such as cleaning oil from their feathers or recovering from injuries. These birds are taken to the Puffin Rescue Centre, run by the Sea Life Trust.
Ecologist Erpur Snær Hansen’s team fits adult puffins with battery-operated loggers with global location sensors (GLS) to track their movements and study their behaviors at sea. These loggers detect changes in daylight and record when the sun rises and sets, pinpointing a bird’s location to within about 180 kilometers. Scientists use the data from the loggers to understand their offshore activities and find ways to protect them. When the season ends, the cliffs are quiet, and the puffins return to the sea. Scientists await their return to download the recorded data and continue studying these fascinating birds.
8. What problem have the puffins encountered?
A. The attack from other birds. B. The disturbance of artificial lights.
C. Lack of food during breeding seasons. D. People’s catching them in urban areas.
9. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To give more relevant reasons. B. To provide additional arguments.
C. To introduce background context. D. To lead in new topics for discussion.
10. What can we know about the puffins from the last paragraph?
A. They aid in scientific research. B. They can send the recorded data.
C. They reflect the change in the sun. D. They have strange behaviors at sea.
11. Which of the following may be the best title for the text?
A. The Survival Secrets of Puffins. B. Rescuing Lost Puffins in Iceland.
C. Light Pollution and Breeding Puffins. D. A Study on Puffins’ Breeding Habits.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. B

A sequence of letters belonging to an ancient alphabet (字母表) have been discovered in a most unusual way — by someone scrolling through social media. The inscription (碑文), on a slate (石板) unearthed in Spain, is closely linked to the Phoenician alphabet, which was hugely influential on later writing systems, including Latin, Spanish, and English. The researchers also hope this finding will reveal more about the writing system of the pre-Roman civilization. However, until now, only incomplete or poorly dated samples had been found.
Joan Ferrer i Jané, a software engineer based in Barcelona, was browsing a web page about an archaeological dig at Casas del Turuñuelo in southern Spain. The site is connected to Tartessos, a civilization that emerged from the cultural exchange between the Iberian Peninsula’s natives and Phoenician settlers who arrived around the 10th century BCE. However, Tartessos mysteriously disappeared towards the end of the 5th century BCE.
Casas del Turuñuelo, first dug in 2015, features a large temple that was deliberately burned down. Recently, the researchers found a square slate rock carved with warriors, geometric shapes, faces, and other markings. “It appears to have been a drawing device for an artisan or a learner,” says excavation co-director Esther Rodriguez González.
Ferrer, who is also a part-time researcher in ancient languages, noticed something more: the Paleohispanic version of the capital letter “i”. He identified 15 symbols and the hints of more letters that will require special imaging techniques to be identified. The bottom part of the tablet, potentially containing additional characters, is missing. Ferrer thinks the slate might have had as many as 32 symbols.
“This new, well-dated example provides a clearer picture of the Tartessian writing system and confirms literacy among Casas del Turuñuelo’s inhabitants in the 5th century BCE,” says José Ángel Zamora López, an expert in the origin of alphabetic writing. Studying the symbols’ layout will be useful for tracing language and cultural evolution within Tartessos. The researchers at Casas del Turuñuelo, assisted by Ferrer, plan to conduct a second review of the slate fragments (碎片) in the hope of finding more inscriptions or the lost fragments of the alphabet.
12. Why is the discovery of the letters significant?
A. It promotes the understanding of some writing systems.
B. It explains why the slate was unearthed.
C. It reveals the facts of Phoenician settlers.
D. It shows the artisans’ high-level skills.
13. What can we infer about Tartessos?
A. It had no written language. B. It was a Roman civilization.
C. It was influenced by Phoenicians. D. It disappeared in the 10th century BCE.
14. What should be used to identify more letters?
A. Lots of drawing devices. B. The old writing system.
C. Some square slate rocks. D. Special imaging techniques.
15. What will the researchers do next?
A Find more Phoenician texts. B. Reconstruct the burnt temple.
C. Translate the new inscriptions. D. Re-examine the slate fragments.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. D

In Shanghai, a unique bond began to form between two students from different corners of the world. Li Ming, a cheerful and curious Chinese student, and John, an American, were paired as roommates during an international student exchange program. At first, their interactions were filled with awkward silences and misunderstandings. The language barrier and cultural differences seemed like high walls, making it difficult for them to connect.
However, as days turned into weeks, Li Ming and John started to find common ground. Li Ming, with his warm smile, would patiently teach John a few Chinese phrases, while John would share stories about American culture and traditions. Slowly, the walls began to fall. They discovered that despite their differences, they shared a love for adventure, a passion for learning, and a mutual respect for each other’s cultures. Their friendship blossomed, and they spent countless hours exploring the city together, trying new foods, and visiting local markets.
The highlight of their time together was a weekend trip to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. Li Ming showed John the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture, while John introduced Li Ming to the concept of American road trips. They laughed, they argued playfully, and they learned from each other. The experience deepened their bond, and they realized that their friendship had gone beyond the boundaries of language and culture.
Since then, their friendship has become stronger. They became inseparable and stayed together throughout the exchange program. They got to know each other better and better, and both considered each other as their best friends.
When the exchange program came to an end, both Li Ming and John felt a heavy sense of sorrow. They had grown so close that the thought of parting was almost unbearable. Standing at the airport, they made a promise to each other: No matter where life took them, they would stay in touch and never forget the memories they had created together. They exchanged addresses and contact information, and with a final hug, John boarded the plane back to the United States.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Years passed, and life took them on different paths. Li Ming continued his studies in China, while John pursued a career in New York. But their friendship remained strong, nurtured through emails, phone calls, and occasional video chats. One day, John sent Li Ming a message saying he was planning a trip to China. Li Ming’s heart filled with joy as he eagerly prepared to welcome his old friend back to his homeland. Li Ming carefully planned a series of activities to show John the beauty and charm of modern China, hoping to create unforgettable memories together once again.
When John arrived in China again, Li Ming was there to greet him with open arms. Then they spent days together, visiting the Great Wall, exploring the Forbidden City, and wandering through the streets of Beijing. Li Ming introduced John to his family and friends, and they shared stories about their lives since they last met. The bond between them had not faded; instead, it had grown stronger with time. As they sat on a hill overlooking the city, watching the sun set, they knew that their friendship would continue to enrich their lives, no matter where their journeys took them.

A. Find more Phoenician texts. B. Reconstruct the burnt temple.
C. Translate the new inscriptions. D. Re-examine the slate fragments.
