More than 30 years ago, Jadav Payeng started planting trees on a barren sandbar (贫瘠的沙洲) near his birthplace in India’s Assam region. That day, the then-16-year-old noticed many snakes washed up on the sandbar after a flood. They were dying due to heat exposure at a rapid rate. “How can I help them?” Then he had an idea: Trees can provide shade for them!
Jadav lives on an island, Majuli, which is in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. It begins at the base of the Himalayas, at the meeting of a fan of rivers that drain (流走) snowmelt. At one time, villages upstream had redirected the river, creating more forceful currents around the island and carrying away the soil, thus damaging the natural habitats of its wildlife. As a consequence, much of the island became barren sand, and an entire community was at risk of being destroyed.
Jadav also noticed that nobody was doing anything about it besides watching their part of the world disappear. So, he started to put his idea into action — every day, one or two or three at a time. He took notes of how they grew, harvested their seeds, grew saplings (树苗) in his hut and planted before going off to work.
Now that once-barren sandbar is a 1,360-acre forest, home to many animals: deer, Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros and even a group of 100 elephants that visit every year. There are now native grasses that have taken root in the shade and varieties of native trees grown from seeds that have washed ashore. But most importantly, the island that is also home to a few hundred people is holding its own against the bad weather. Standing beside one of the first trees he planted 30 years ago, Jadav tells us: “It’s a little thing, something anyone can do.”
24. What initially motivated Jadav to start planting trees on the sandbar?
A. To beautify his birthplace. B. To save snakes from heat exposure.
C. To protect villages from being destroyed. D. To prevent the loss of wildlife’s habitats.
25. What made Majuli a barren sandbar years ago?
A. The pollution of the river. B. Effect of extreme weather.
C. Government’s lack of environmental awareness. D. Redirection of the river by villagers upstream.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. What difference Jadav’s efforts have made. B. What the forest means to the wildlife.
C. How ecology benefits the human kind. D. How villagers feel about Jadav’s deeds.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Jadav?
A. Bright and careful. B. Respectful and efficient.
C. Kind-hearted and determined. D. Knowledgeable and reliable.

In an effort to help eco-conscious consumers, a nonprofit group Free-Go in Geneva. Switzerland is making public fridges available, so restaurant owners, at-home cooks and others can use them to give away food before it goes bad. It’s part of a bigger effort by communities in Switzerland to do their part for the environment while helping to cut down on food waste.
The program costs about 840,000 to run each year and enjoys the support from both charity groups and the city government. It launched a year ago with a single fridge outside a community center in western Geneva and it now has four fridges, placed around town. A fifth one is planned before year’s end. Passers-by can grab fruit, vegetables, bread and other food from the fridges to take home for free.
Marine Delevaux is the project’s director. She said the food left in its fridges is generally snapped up within an hour after delivery. For health and legal reasons, no frozen foods, open food containers, prepared meals, or alcohol are permitted in the fridges. Contributors of food from the private sector—like restaurants—must promise to ensure the donated food is safe to eat.
Free-Go is also experimenting with scheduled pickups at apartment buildings to make it easier for residents to participate in the program. It has also set up a “hotline” that restauranteurs can use to call for getting back unused food. “Generally when the food collected from shops and restaurants arrives in the morning, people are already waiting to help themselves,” Delevaux said, adding that the first Geneva fridge helped save some 3.2 tons of food from going to waste last year.
Because the food is free, and the donations can change, it’s uncertain what will turn up in the fridges. Some people receiving food might end up being disappointed.
Cuendet is a 54-year-old teacher. Just after leaving some vegetables that she grew, she said, “We have too much” and praised the program “because this neighborhood has a lot of need.”
28. What’s the goal of the nonprofit group Free-Go?
A. To enhance communities’ ties. B. To reduce food waste in Geneva.
C. To stress the importance of environment. D. To promote energy-saving fridges.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined words “snapped up” in paragraph 3?
A. Taken away. B. Eaten up. C. Sought for. D. Charged for.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Citizens’ remarks on wasted food.
B. Local restaurants’ new functions.
C. Free-Go’s improvements and contributions.
D. Free-Go’s praise and encouragement for donors.
31. Why may some people be upset about the food?
A. There is a collection of junk food.
B. The taste of food always stays the same.
C. Some foods are out of the recommended date.
D. They might not get what they want or need.

Every day, people share more than 2 billion photos on the Internet. While visual content provides a fun and expressive way for people to communicate online, consuming and creating it poses challenges for people who are blind or severely visually impaired (受损的). With more than 39 million people who are blind, and over 246 million who have a severe visual impairment, many people may feel excluded (排外的) from the conversation around photos on the Internet. The researchers from Harvard University want to build technology that helps the blind community appreciate photos in the same way others enjoy them.
Automatic alternative text (AAT) is a new development that generates a description of a photo using advancements in object recognition technology. People using screen readers on digital devices will hear a list of items a photo may contain as they click photos on the Internet. Before today, people using screen readers would only hear the name of the person who shared the photo, followed by the term “photo” when they came upon an image. Now they can offer a richer description of what’s in a photo thanks to AAT. For instance, someone could now hear “an image containing three people, smiling, outdoors”.
This is possible because of Harvard University’s object recognition technology, which is based on a network that has billions of parameters (参数) and is trained with millions of examples. Each advancement in object recognition technology means that the researchers will be able to make technology even more accessible to more people. When people are connected, they can achieve extraordinary things as individuals and as a community, and when everyone is connected, we all benefit from it. The researchers from Harvard University are launching AAT first on smartphone screen readers set to English, but they plan to add this functionality for other languages and platforms soon.
While this technology is still emerging, using its current capabilities to describe photos is an important step toward providing our visually impaired community with the same benefits and enjoyment that everyone else gets from photos.
32. What does the research team from Harvard University focus on?
A. The quality of visual contents online.
B. The methods of sharing online photos effectively.
C. The technology of helping the blind enjoy photos better.
D. The improvement of screen readers and other digital devices.
33. What is the advantage of AAT over the previous technology?
A. It can offer more photos to blind people. B. It can describe more about online photos.
C. It can recognize the person who shares photos. D. It can satisfy all requirements of blind people.
34. What can we learn about object recognition technology from paragraph 3?
A. It is the key to developing AAT.
B. It has set up multi-languages for AAT.
C It makes the blind more dependent on AAT.
D. It has helped researchers launch AAT on tablet screen readers.
35. What’s the author’s attitude toward AAT?
A. Skeptical. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.

Triiiiiingggggggggggg, the bell rang. Suddenly my heart was raising and fear rose within me. I was nervous as I started to feel sick, really sick. I ran to the bathroom and washed my face with water. I felt my heart pound against my chest, hard and loud as I looked into the mirror and whispered “Come on, you can do this.”
Some were looking forward to this moment for ages; but not me. I felt frightened every time I imagine how uncomfortable it would be on a stage, and being the center of attention. If it was a speech, I could manage, but repeating a scene from a movie that has already been done by professional actors is simply hard because we get compared to them. But there was no choice.
As I made it to the assembly hall, I went over the script in my head. Suddenly I tensed as I couldn’t remember all the lines. Once I was there in the assembly hall, my brain literally stopped working because of all the noise and the tension in the air.
As soon as the teachers who were supposed to judge our performance entered, the crowd quieted down and the performances began. I was really nervous until the first performer was called, because I was really tired of being the first in everything as my name is the first in the register. But the more I waited, the more tired I got of waiting. There came a point where I, who once was feeling sick and scared of performing, wanted to go on stage and get my performance done. That’s when I found out that I was arranged to perform the next day. I was quite happy because maybe that would give me some more time to practice and improve the weaknesses that I saw in others.
The bubble burst when the teacher asked us to perform that day. My heart beat raced and as I walked on to the stage, I was shaking. When I got up along with my friend, I had a good look around. There were 50-60 people, which weren’t much. Then I felt really stupid for being scared of having an audience.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;

B 25. D 26. A 27. C
根据第一段“That day, the then-16-year-old noticed many snakes washed up on the sandbar after a flood. They were dying due to heat exposure at a rapid rate. “How can I help them?” Then he had an idea: Trees can provide shade for them!(那天,这位当时16岁的孩子注意到,洪水过后,许多蛇被冲上了沙洲。它们因暴晒而迅速死亡。“我怎么才能帮助它们呢?”然后他有了一个主意:树木可以为它们提供阴凉!)”可知,最初是拯救因暴晒而迅速死亡的蛇的愿望促使Jadav开始在沙洲上种树。故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“At one time, villages upstream had redirected the river, creating more forceful currents around the island and carrying away the soil, thus damaging the natural habitats of its wildlife.(曾经,上游的村庄改变了河流的流向,在岛屿周围形成了更强的水流,带走了土壤,从而破坏了岛上野生动物的自然栖息地。)”
根据第四段“Now that once-barren sandbar is a 1,360-acre forest, home to many animals: deer, Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros and even a group of 100 elephants that visit every year.(如今,这片曾经贫瘠的沙洲已经成为一片1360英亩的森林,是许多动物的家园:鹿、孟加拉虎、印度犀牛,甚至还有每年都会来的一群100头大象。)”以及“But most importantly, the island that is also home to a few hundred people is holding its own against the bad weather.(但最重要的是,这个岛上还住着几百人,它正在抵御恶劣的天气。)” 故选A。
根据第一段“That day, the then-16-year-old noticed many snakes washed up on the sandbar after a flood. They were dying due to heat exposure at a rapid rate. “How can I help them?” Then he had an idea: Trees can provide shade for them!(那天,当时16岁的他注意到洪水过后,许多蛇被冲到了沙洲上。它们因暴晒而迅速死亡。“我怎么才能帮助它们呢?”然后他有了一个主意:树木可以为它们提供阴凉!)”以及第三段中的“So, he started to put his idea into action — every day, one or two or three at a time.(于是,他开始把自己的想法付诸行动——每天种一棵、两棵或三棵树。)”以及最后一段“Standing beside one of the first trees he planted 30 years ago, Jadav tells us: “It’s a little thing, something anyone can do.”(站在30年前他种下的第一棵树旁,Jadav告诉我们:“这是一件小事,任何人都可以做。”)”

“Generally, when the food collected from shops and restaurants arrives in the morning, people are already waiting to help themselves,” Delevaux said, adding that the first Geneva fridge helped save some 3.2 tons of food from going to waste last year.
B 29. A 30. C 31. D

根据第一段中的“It’s part of a bigger effort by communities in Switzerland to do their part for the environment while helping to cut down on food waste.(这是瑞士社区在帮助减少食物浪费的同时为环境尽一份力的更大努力的一部分。)”
根据划线短语前后“She said the food left in its fridges is generally(她说留在冰箱的物品一般情况会被……)”和“within an hour after delivery.(在送货后一个小时内)”可知,此处指的是留在冰箱里的食物通常在留下后一小时内被……,结合划线短语后的“For health and legal reasons, no frozen foods, open food containers, prepared meals, or alcohol are permitted in the fridges.(出于健康和法律原因,冰箱里不允许存放冷冻食品、开放式食品容器、预制食品或酒精。)” 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Free-Go is also experimenting with scheduled pickups at apartment buildings to make it easier for residents to participate in the program. It has also set up a “hotline” that restauranteurs can use to call for getting back unused food.(Free-Go也在尝试在公寓楼里安排接送,让居民更容易参与到这个项目中来。它还设立了一条“热线”,餐馆老板可以利用这条热线打电话取回未食用的食物)”可知,Free-Go 还在尝试在公寓楼进行定时接送服务,还设立了一条“热线”,这些举措不仅方便了居民,而且减少了食物浪费由此可推知,本段主要谈论的是Free-Go的改进及贡献。故选C项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Because the food is free, and the donations can change, it’s uncertain what will turn up in the fridges. Some people receiving food might end up being disappointed.(因为食物是免费的,而且捐赠可以改变,所以不确定冰箱里会有什么。一些收到食物的人最终可能会感到失望。)”可知,食物是免费且捐赠还可以改变,冰箱里有什么不会总是很清楚,由此可知,一些接受食物的人可能无法得到他们想要或需要的东西。故选D项。
D

C. It makes the blind more dependent on AAT.
D. It has helped researchers launch AAT on tablet screen readers.
35. What’s the author’s attitude toward AAT?
A. Skeptical. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.
C 33. B 34. A 35. D

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
I introduced myself and stared to perform what I had been dying for long before.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After I was done, I looked at the audience, thinking how much I loved doing this.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I introduced myself and started to perform what I had been dying for long before. First I felt a bit short of breath due to my nervousness. But I tried to push myself to picture myself as the real actor in the movie, engaging in the role I was playing. Soon, my hands stopped sweating, voice stopped shaking, and my performance sounded as natural as possible. More than once I heard the thundering applause from the audience, which relieved me knowing I was doing a great job. The more I went on, the more confident I became.
After I was done, I looked at the audience, thinking how much I loved doing this. I sensed their appreciation from their faces, satisfaction from their eyes. To my amazement, they all stood up, giving deafening applause, cheering and shouting “Bravo...!” I felt so relieved and content, realizing standing on the stage is not a big deal at all. Actually, the audience are the best supporters and all I have to do is to try my best. Being on the stage has taught me the best lesson ever: just be devoted to what you are doing.
