Everybody has had at least one experience from which he knows the meaning of life. This time, which took place several years ago, but seems as if it just happened.
On an afternoon several years ago, my brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's dress and picked out a beautiful skirt. “Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.” he said. I guess this was the occasion: it was the funeral (葬礼) of my sister, after her unexpected death.
He took the shirt and put it on bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the funeral. Then he closed the drawer and turned to me, “Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion.”
I'm thinking about his words, and they've changed the way I live my life. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a kind of experience to enjoy, not to suffer. “Someday” and “one of these days” are losing their importance on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.
Ever since that day, I have been trying very hard not to put off, hold hack or save anything that would add laughter and color to our lives. Every morning when I open my eyes. I tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath, truly is a gift. So cherish every day and find the true meaning of your life.

44. What does the author write this passage for?
A. To show how to make good use of every day in life.
B. To explain the true meaning of his brother-in-law's words.
C. To tell people to cherish every day and find the meaning of life.
D. To encourage people to waste time and enjoy themselves in life.
45. What's the best title for this passage?
A. Every Day Is a Gift
B. My Sister Jan
C. What Is the Meaningful Life Like

C
“You might not be able to see it or feel it but air pollution can vary a lot from one day to the next. Such fluctuations (变动) could lead to similar day-to-day changes in how a child’s brain functions,” says Jordi Sunyer. That’s what his work shows. He studies the link between pollutants and disease, and he is the head of a child health program at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, ISGlobal. It’s in Barcelona, Spain.
“Attention is important for school success,” Sunyer points out. It’s the first step in the learning process. Students who are easily distracted (使分心) will have a harder time focusing on information and remembering it. “We know there are many factors throughout the day that can cause attention to fluctuate,” Sunyer says. Feeling sleepy can make it harder to stay focused on a task, as well too hot or too cold. Sunyer had a prediction that air pollution could do this, too.
So his group studied 2,687 children. All were 7 to 10 years old. Each child attended one of 39 different Barcelona schools. Everyone took a computer test four times during the school year. It contained a number of tasks that required paying attention. For instance, the kids were asked to watch fish swim in a stream. They were told to click left or right depending on which direction the fish swam. “It’s a simple task, but when kids get bored and lose attention, they start to click the wrong answer, “Sunyer notes. The researchers also measured levels of air pollution on days when the kids had been tested. Then they compared the kids’ scores when pollution levels in Barcelona had been relatively high or low. And they showed that the kids scored slightly worse on days with higher levels of certain air pollutants.
Sunyer now is focused on helping schools in Barcelona identify ways to lower levels of the pollution to which kids are exposed.
46. What do we know about Jordi Sunyer?
A. He is a famous doctor in Barcelona. B. He thinks air pollution cannot be noticed.
C. He thinks diseases are related to pollutants. D. He is interested in studying children’s health.
47. What may affect children’s attention according to Paragraph 2?
A. Too much sleep. B. Warm weather.
C. Being hungry. D. Air pollution.
48. What can be learned from the research?
A. The computer test didn’t make a difference.
B. All the children tested were from middle schools.
C. Children’s test scores were influenced by pollution levels.
D. It was too simple for kids to recognize the direction the fish swam.
49. What will be most probably talked about following the last paragraph?
A. The variations of pollutants in Barcelona.
B. How to teach children to protect the environment.
C. The theory of the research on children’s attention.
D. Possible ways to reduce the pollution around schools.
50. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Air pollution: the enemy of all humans B. Poor attention causes bad school performance
C. Air pollution results in poorer attention D. Stop polluting the environment just for kids

Bogucki was a fireman from Alaska with a wish to discover his spiritual side in the wilderness While Alaska’s not short of the sort of land (地形) that can bring a person closer to nature, Bogucki chose a very different environment — Australia’s Great Sandy Desert. Aside from the packs of wild Australian dogs that regularly tear cows or sheep to death, the desert is home to the desert death adder.
Bogucki set off in July, with the intention of cycling and walking several hundred miles across the desert. Fifteen days later a group of tourists found his bike abandoned on a path, alongside footprints tracing into the wilderness. The discovery led to a huge search operation, but police found no trace of Bogucki. After 12 days they guessed he’d either hitchhiked (搭便车) his way back to civilization or died, and called off the operation.
The missing fireman’s parents weren’t willing to give up on him, and hired their own private man. Bogucki was finally found by a news team in a helicopter, 43 days after he’d set off. The members in the helicopter successfully flew Bogucki out.
Bogucki had survived by drinking muddy water and eating wild flowers. He had lost as much as 20 kilograms of weight, but was otherwise in surprisingly good condition. The doctor that treated him said he had nothing worse than a few scratches (刮痕), a far cry from the sunburn and blisters (水泡).
The number of days during which Bogucki was missing was 43, which was almost unbelievable. When asked whether he regretted his decision, Bogucki said, “I indeed suffered a lot but I have had my willpower tested too, which is of great value to the rest of my life.”

Everybody has had at least one experience from which he knows the meaning of life. This time, which took place several years ago, but seems as if it just happened.
On an afternoon several years ago my brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's dress and picked out a beautiful skirt.

C. To tell people to cherish every day and find the meaning of life.
D. To encourage people to waste time and enjoy themselves in life.

“You might not be able to see it or feel it, but air pollution can vary a lot from one day to the next.

根据第一段“Bogucki was a fireman from Alaska with a wish to discover his spiritual side in the wilderness While Alaska’s not short of the sort of land (地形) that can bring a person closer to nature, Bogucki chose a very different environment — Australia’s Great Sandy Desert. (Bogucki是来自阿拉斯加的一名消防员,他希望在荒野中发现自己的精神层面。虽然阿拉斯加不乏能让人更接近自然的地形,但Bogucki选择了一个非常不同的环境——澳大利亚的大沙沙漠)”以及最后一段“When asked whether he regretted his decision, Bogucki said, ‘I indeed suffered a lot but I have had my willpower tested too, which is of great value to the rest of my life.’ (当被问及是否后悔自己的决定时,Bogucki说:“我确实受了很多苦,但我的意志力也受到了考验,这对我余生来说很有价值。”)”可知,Bogucki决定去澳大利亚的大沙沙漠是为了考验他的意志力。故答案为To test his willpower.

根据第二段“Fifteen days later a group of tourists found his bike abandoned on a path, alongside footprints tracing into the wilderness. The discovery led to a huge search operation, but police found no trace of Bogucki. (15天后,一群游客发现他的自行车abandoned在一条小路上,旁边有脚印,一直延伸到荒野中。这一发现引发了大规模的搜索行动,但警方没有发现Bogucki的踪迹)”可知,游客发现博Bogucki的自行车被遗弃在小路上,推测abandoned在此处意为“被遗弃的,留下的”。故答案为Left behind.
根据第三段“Bogucki was finally found by a news team in a helicopter, 43 days after he’d set off. The members in the helicopter successfully flew Bogucki out. (Bogucki在出发43天后,终于被一架直升机上的新闻团队找到。直升机上的成员成功地将Bogucki救出)”可知,最终是一个新闻团队或救援人员救了Bogucki。故答案为Rescuers/A news team.
根据第四段“Bogucki had survived by drinking muddy water and eating wild flowers. He had lost as much as 20 kilograms of weight, but was otherwise in surprisingly good condition. (Bogucki靠喝泥水和吃野花活了下来。他瘦了足足20公斤,但其他方面身体状况出奇地好)”可知,Bogucki在沙漠中靠喝泥水和减重活了下来。故答案为By drinking muddy water and losing weight.
根据最后一段“When asked whether he regretted his decision, Bogucki said, ‘I indeed suffered a lot but I have had my willpower tested too, which is of great value to the rest of my life.’ (当被问及是否后悔自己的决定时,Bogucki说:“我确实受了很多苦,但我的意志力也受到了考验,这对我余生来说很有价值。”)”可知,Bogucki是一个意志坚强的人,他所经历的苦难考验了他的决心,也让他学到了宝贵的经验。故答案为He is strong-willed; suffering tested his resolve, valuing lifelong lessons.

I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer for the Chinese Painting Exhibition which will be held in your art gallery.
I think I am qualified for this job, because I have learned Chinese painting since childhood. Besides, I am fluent in both Chinese and English, which is beneficial for introducing Chinese paintings.
Moreover, I am outgoing and I like talking to others. If I am lucky enough to be chosen as a volunteer, I can show visitors around the gallery and get them to know more about Chinese painting.
