“Poor dear!” said the nurse, without any expressions.
The doctor began to put on his coat. The baby is weak and will probably have difficulties. He said. “Give him a little milk to keep him quiet.” Then he looked at the dead woman. “Where did the mother come from?”
“She was brought here last night,” replied the old nurse. “She was found lying in the street. She must have walked a long way, for her shoes were worn to pieces. Where she came from, or what her name was, nobody knows.”
“The old story,” the doctor said sadly, shook his head and left.
And so Oliver was left with only the old nurse. Without clothes, he could have been the child of a king or a beggar (乞丐). But when the woman dressed him later in yellow cotton clothes, he looked exactly what he was an orphan in a workhouse, ready for a poor and hungry life alone.

Do you often see the word “Ghoti”? People pronounce it as “fish”. And it 16 in many discussions about English spelling. It’s said that the play writer George Bernard Shaw created it to show how funny English spelling is. He pronounced it “fish” because of the sounds tough, women and nation. This might not be true. 17 , it raises an interesting question: Do we need to fix English spelling, and can we fix it?
English spelling can bring problems to writers, even to those who were 18 in English-speaking countries. Some languages like Italian or Korean have a 19 relationship between letters and sounds than English, as most letters are pronounced in the same way. While English has many letters that are not pronounced or pronounced 20 in certain words. This influences about 25% of English words, including some of the most commonly used ones.
Before the 18th century, people spelled words more freely. For example, Shakespeare spelled his own name in different ways and didn’t think it was 21 . But after dictionaries were invented in the 18th century, there were clear rules for “correct” and “incorrect” spellings.
Many people have tried to improve English spelling over the years and maybe these 22 make sense. But the differences between spelling and pronunciation make it difficult 23 . If we stick to a strict phonetic system (语音系统), words would have different spellings in different places, making 24 between nations and even within the same country almost impossible.
So, while English spelling might seem strange at times, it’s part of what makes the language special. Even though people try to change it, we’ll 25 keep it as it is for now.

You’re at your new school. 26 You want to join someone at their table, but you’re not sure if they’ re friendly. What do you do? One student’s solution was to create an app.
Natalie Hampton from California, USA, knows what it feels like to be alone at a new school. She found it difficult to make new friends and had to search for a new table at lunch every day. If she sat alone, she felt lonely. But if she asked to join someone and was refused, she felt embarrassed. 27
The app called Sit With Us is simple. If a student is having lunch in the afternoon, he or she can create an invitation. Other students can open the app and accept that invitation. They can then use the app to decide when and where to meet. 28 This is the reason why it works so well: it lowers the risk of being refused, and the embarrassment that goes along with it.
Natalie is happy to see that people are replying to her app actively-especially those who suffer from bullying (遭受欺凌). 29 She also appeared in many news stories.
Natalie was even asked to speak at a university. In her talk, Natalie wanted people to know that you don’t have to do something big to change lives. 30 Why not try Sit With Us?
A.Soon after she made her app available to the public, she won a prize for it.
B.It’s lunch time, but you don’t have anyone to sit with.
C.However, you don’t have any friends at this new school.
D.Sometimes, a simple thing—like having a friend to enjoy lunch with—can make all the difference.

Do you ever wonder why trees begin to bud (发芽、开花) earlier in some cities? Scientists finally found the answer but it’s not very pleasant. New science suggests a relationship between light pollution and the timing when trees produce buds, which shows the arrival of the spring season.
Light pollution is defined by the Lighting Research Center as the harmful effect of outdoor lighting such as streetlights. Too much light at night destroys natural cycles and makes it hard to see stars and planets. It harms the environment more than we realize.
By studying some trees, researchers found out that trees lit by man-made lights at night start to bud about 7.5 days earlier than trees in natural darkness. And they found out that light had a more important effect than temperature when the buds came out. The early budding may cause problems for insects, which feed on leaves, and the birds which then feed on them in turn. Professor Richard French Constant, who helped lead the research, explained that more than the budding of trees, the study implies the danger to the balance of nature. “At the moment, caterpillars (毛毛虫) are born at just the right time to eat the new leaves that trees grow, and birds are born at the right time to eat these young caterpillars. But, when man-made lights make trees grow leaves earlier, it can mess up this natural timing and cause problems for both the caterpillars and the birds.” he said.
We need to do more research on how light pollution affects nature. If the problem was left to continue, it is believed that by 2100, spring would begin almost a full month earlier than it does today.
________ Harms Natural Cycles

There are many steps in making wood carving. Firstly, craftsmen design pictures or models based on customers’ needs or their own creativity. Secondly, they will choose suitable wood, cut and carve it. Then, craftsmen need to use different tools to carve the wood into different shapes. Finally, they will polish and color the wood carving to make it smoother and more beautiful. It takes them a long time to finish one.
It is so valuable that we should try our best to pass it on!

【答案】
16.is mentioned 17.Anyway 18.born 19.more direct 20.differently 21.unusual 22.efforts 23.to change 24.communication 25.probably
【解析】本文主要围绕英语拼写展开讨论,借此引出是否要修正英语拼写的问题。
16.句意:并且在许多关于英语拼写的讨论中都提到了它。根据“And it ... in many discussions about English spelling.”可知,it指代前文“人们把Ghoti这个词读作fish”这件事,在许多关于英语拼写的讨论中都提到过它,主语it和动词mention之间是被动关系,要用一般现在时的被动语态,结构为“am/is/are+过去分词”,主语it是第三人称单数,be动词用is。故填is mentioned。
17.句意:无论如何,这引出了一个有趣的问题:我们是否需要修正英语拼写,又能否做到呢?根据“This might not be true. ..., it raises an interesting question...”可知,空格前文的说法可能并不属实,空格后说这引出了一个有趣的问题,用anyway来转换话题,句首字母要大写。故填Anyway。
18.句意:英语拼写会给写作者带来困扰,甚至对那些出生在英语国家的人来说也是如此。根据“English spelling can bring problems to writers, even to those who were ... in English-speaking countries.”可知,甚至对出生在英语国家的人来说,英语拼写也会带来困扰,“be born in”意为“出生于”。故填born。
19.句意:像意大利语或韩语这样的一些语言,其字母与发音之间的关系比英语更为直接,因为大多数字母的发音方式是固定的。根据“Some languages like Italian or Korean have a ... relationship between letters and sounds than English”可知,句中含有than,要用形容词的比较级,修饰名词relationship, direct“直接的”符合语境,其比较级为more direct。故填more direct。
20.句意:然而英语中有许多字母在某些单词中不发音,或者发音方式与常规不同。根据“While English has many letters that are not pronounced or pronounced ... in certain words.”可知,英语中有许多字母在某些单词中的发音方式与常规不同,需填入副词,修饰动词,different的副词形式是differently。故填differently。

E.This allows students to make plans online instead of face-to face.
F.She created a lunch-planning app to help students like her find people to have lunch with.

To achieve my dream, I am determined to study hard and gain necessary knowledge. I’ll also actively take part in all kinds of activities to gain practical experience. I am confident that with my hard work and determination, I will be able to realize my dream.
