Shi Guangyin is a farmer and eco-warrior (生态战士) from Dingbian, Shaanxi Province, China. Born in 1952, he grew up in a small town near the Mu Us Desert, where sandstorms often destroyed crops, houses, and even people’s lives. The local weather condition is terrible, and so is life for the locals. Growing up in such an environment, Shi knows how much pain and harm the sand can cause. As a child, Shi experienced the pain of losing his home because of sandstorms. At the age of 8, he lost his best friend in a sandstorm, which made him decide to fight against desertification (沙漠化).
Fighting against the desert is not an easy job. In 1968, Shi started leading local people to plant trees in the desert. After years of hard work, he succeeded in finding ways to grow trees in the sand. In 1984, he sold 84 sheep and borrowed money to plant trees on 200 hectares (公顷) of land. Although he had many difficulties, including failures in the harsh (艰苦) area of Langwosha, Shi never stopped fighting. In 1988, he finally succeeded in greening Langwosha by using new planting technology.
Shi was old. His son, Shi Zhanjun, continued planting trees but sadly died in a car accident while transporting trees. Shi’s grandson, Shi Jianyang, then took up the responsibility. Together, they have turned 23, 334 hectares of desert into green land.
Shi believes that fighting against desertification is his lifelong duty. He says, “I shall not stop planting trees until my last breath.” His story shows how one person’s will can make a big difference in protecting nature and living in harmony (和谐) with the environment.

Dear head teacher, teachers, parents and fellow students,
I’m very proud that you have chosen me to speak to you today.
I have three roses here; a red one, a yellow one and a white one. These roses are to thank three groups of people for the three most important things that I have leant. These three things are friendship, effort and trust.
I give the red rose to my friends. When I started school here, my Chinese was not good, and some of my mistakes were very funny. But they were not laughing at me. They taught me to say many things in Chinese and kindly invited me to join them. Thanks to their kindness, my Chinese is much better.
I give the white rose to my teachers who have taught me that there is no success without effort. When I started running in the 800 metres, I just wanted to give up. But the PE teacher, Ms Huang, helped me. She ran along with me, and she said, “You only really lose when you give up!” I still can’t run fast enough, but I’ve learnt to try my best, not only with running but with whatever else I do.
I give the yellow rose to my parents for teaching me that love is about trust. When I wanted to learn the violin, my father told me that I should work harder at maths. I was disappointed. Then, on the morning of my birthday, I woke up to find a beautiful violin at my bedside. There was a note from my father, “我确信你会非常擅长音乐。I know you will be better at maths.”
I’m sure that you all have your own memories about the happiness of the last three years, and the people whom you want to thank, so let’s all stand up and say, “Thank you, friends, teachers and parents! We love you!”

From grasses to trees, plants come in all colors, shapes and sizes. There are about 350,000 types of plants in the world. Let’s enter the world of plants and learn more about them.
How do plants make food?
Like all living things, plants need food to live. They make food for themselves by photosynthesis (光合作用). This happens in the leaves. To make food, plants need sunlight, CO₂ and H₂O. They use the energy from the sun to turn all of those things into O₂ and sugars.
What do we not really know about plants?
Fighting
Plants fight against each other to live. Only two percent of the sunlight gets to the forest floor. That’s why some plants spread their leaves to fight for sunlight.
Helping each other
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, the roots of Euphrates popular (胡杨的根) are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots.
◆Defending
Each kind of plant has its own ways to protect itself. Some flowers give off a bad smell. Some even have teeth.
Mimosa publica (含羞草)
When you touch it, it folds up its leaves. Scientists believe this helps the plant fight enemies. The sudden movement of its leaves can scare enemies away.

It is often said, “You can’t live only on air.” But now the Chinese scientists can tell you: Maybe you can.
Recently, some Chinese scientists have made a big breakthrough (突破). They turned CO2, one of the main greenhouse gases, into starch (淀粉). Starch is the main part of flour (面粉), rice and corn that we eat every day. Usually, it’s created by plants with CO2, water and sunlight. According to the team’s director Ma Yanhe, it takes the plants nearly 60 steps to produce starch. But now, the team, after six years of hard work, has found a simpler way to do this, with only 11 steps.
“Our study shows that creating something like starch is possible in a lab, and this technology may be helpful in many areas,” said Ma.
The scientists first turned CO2 and hydrogen (氢气) into methanol (甲醇). Then they pieced these methanol molecules (分子) into bigger and more complex molecules. Finally, the starch came out. This method makes it possible to produce food in factories, replacing traditional farming. This will not only help make plenty of food, but also save water and land. It may also help recycle CO2 to deal with climate (气候) change, according to China Daily.
The study can be helpful in space, too. Astronauts may no longer need to worry about their food as they travel in space. They may simply turn the CO2 they breathe out into the food they eat!
1.What breakthrough did the Chinese scientists make recently?
2.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
3.Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
4.根据短文内容填空。 (每空限1个单词,共四个小题)

The robots are here. They are becoming more common in people’s home. Some people say robots are great but others worry that they could end up having a bad effect on our lives. What do you think? Are home robots a good idea?
Yes, they make everything easier.
Nobody likes housework. It is boring but is something that has to be done. So why not get a robot to do it? It won’t get bored and can keep busy working. Therefore, people can spend time doing things they enjoy, such as going to the park, watching films or spend time with their friends and family.机器人也能让人们感觉安全。For example, it can alert (使警觉) the owner if there is a water leak, an oven left on or a broken window. It can keep an eye on pets or people so that the person who is not there knows that they are all right. Robots can be our friends and can stop people from feeling lonely by providing them with company. They can also help us stay in touch and be used to video—call other people.
No, we should not depend on robots.
Robots in the home are a very bad idea. It is tempting to get them to do the housework. Gradually, people will slowly forget how to do things and lose the skills to solve certain problems. If the robot breaks down, people could be left in trouble and unable to remember how to clean and cook. Lots of people already rely on phones for directions and can’t read maps.
Having robots with cameras and microphones in the house means they could record lots of information about you, including your talks. If robots do everything for people, they will become lazy. Doing housework is a good way to stay active and keep you healthy.

Self-disciplined (自律) people are not all outstanding people. But nearly all outstanding people are self-disciplined. Some of them read every day. Some of them never arrive late. The real difference between an outstanding person and a common person is that an outstanding person can manage his or her time well. That’s where their success comes from. What people call self-discipline is in fact self-management.
One example is staying fit. Never underestimate (低估) someone who is in good shape. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows that it’s not easy. It’s even harder to avoid putting weight back on. If someone is in good shape, it shows that he knows the principles (原则) of staying fit and is able to stick to a plan that uses these principles. If someone is in good shape, it means that this person is good at managing themselves and their time. Whether it is natural or learned through hard work, it is a great skill. It also shows that this person is able to work through challenges and can balance long-term goals with short-term goals.
So if someone is in good shape, they are more than just healthy. How do you learn self-management? First of all, set a goal and write down your reasons for wanting to achieve it. Create a list of all the things you need to do to achieve this goal and start to work on them one at a time. With self-discipline, small things in life will no longer trouble you. Only through self-discipline can you truly own your future.

China’s Chang’e 6 probe (探测器) returned to Earth on June 25, 2024, With the first-ever rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon. China’s space agency called the mission (任务) “a complete success” after the probe landed in northern China.
Chinese scientists think the returned samples (样本) include 2.5 million-year-old volcanic rock and other materials that scientists hope will answer questions about geographic (地理的) differences on the moon’s two sides.
The samples could even help scientists to discover how planets are formed, according to the BBC.
The near side is what is seen from Earth, and the far side faces outer space. The far side is also known to have mountains and impact craters, contrasting with relatively flat areas visible on the near side.

In front of the Great Hall of the People, stood a graceful (优雅的) woman in colorful traditional Hani ethnic (民族的) clothes, catching the eye of reporters.
She is Yang Yuni. Ten years ago, she was only a village girl who loved dancing and her ethnic culture. Now she’s a dancer, a successful businesswoman, and a member of the National Committee of the CPPCC.
That’s thanks to her endless efforts (不懈的努力) to spread and protect the traditional Hani culture. Born and raised in a Hani village in Honghe county, Yunnan, the 28-year-old deeply loves her ethnic culture. Guided by her mother, the county’s first folk dance teacher, and growing up with the inviting Hani terraces (梯田), she came to love dance. Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2,000 years ago. It didn’t spread to Europe until the year 1100. And four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. After that, countries rich in forests, such as Canada, Sweden, America and Finland became the most important ones in paper making.
The common uses for paper include newspapers, magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm? For example, in Finland, the farmers wear paper boots to keep their feet warm in the snow. And even houses can be insulated (使绝缘) from heat or cold with paper.
However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth some day in the near future. Every day people throw away about 2,800 tons of paper in the world, which means that we cut down nearly 48,000 trees every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.
As for this problem, we can do many things in daily life. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use glass cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some.
In short, we should keep a balance (平衡) between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.

We can use both sides of every piece of paper./We can make useful things out of used paper. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some./We can use glass cups instead of paper ones.

In a village near a desert lived a young and successful businessman named James. But he often felt unhappy because of the endless challenges he faced.
One day, a wise old man came to the village with 100 camels. James went to see him and said, “I always have business worries, family troubles and health problems. Please tell me how to make them disappear.” The old man smiled and said, “I’ll give you an answer tomorrow morning. But first, can you do a small thing for me?” James agreed. The old man asked him to take care of the 100 camels for the night, making sure that they all sat down and rested before he could go to sleep.
The next morning, the old man asked James how his night went. James said sadly, “I didn’t sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side.”
“That’s true. As noticed last night, some camels sat down on their own, while others required some effort, and yet many camels did not sit even after lots of effort. If you had come back later, you would have seen that some of the camels, even though they didn’t sit at first, finally sat down on their own,” the old man said.
James nodded. The old man continued, “Problems are just like camels—some problems get solved by themselves, some get solved when you put in some effort, and some do not get solved even after you have tried your best. Leave such problems to time. At the right time, these problems themselves will come to an end.”
James felt a sense of understanding. It completely changed the way he saw life’s challenges.

Maggie Grout was just 15 years old when she set up a non-profit organization—Thinking Huts. Now 22, she is raising money to build a series of 3D-printed schools powered by solar energy. She led the whole process from start to finish, working with university professors. They chose Madagascar because it needs more schools. Many children in that country don’t have the chance to have access to education. Besides, it has a lot of sunshine, which can be made into energy to power things.
Maggie then drew a design for the school. She thought about what the people might need and where they worked best.
Next, Maggie found an architect and 3D printing company for the job. To make it environmentally friendly, they use a special 3D printer to build the school. It meant up to 50 percent less concrete (混凝土) used and less CO2. Plus, the school could be completed in just a week. They also used local materials to build the doors, windows and roof.
What’s more, Thinking Huts trained local workers to use a 3D printer so that they could build more schools on their own in the future. Maggie plans to print more new schools in other parts of Madagascar because one in five children don’t have the chance to attend primary school there.
So far, Grout’s charity has already raised $125,000. “It’s not so bad to me! Of course, we need more,” Maggie said.

1.Where is Shi Guangyin from?
2.Why did Shi Guangyin decide to fight against desertification?
3.How did Shi Guangyin succeed in greening Langwosha?

Days pass by, it seems that daily life will become boring if nothing unexpected happens in our lives. The sense of ceremony from special days keeps our feelings fresh and increases expectations of life.
Mrs. Li has two children, Li Xin is her 15-year-old daughter. Li Lei is Li Xin’s brother. He’s older than Li Xin.
3. A new semester (学期) should begin with a sense of ceremony. On the first day of new term, Li Xin sat in front of the TV and watched the First Class, an educational program of CCTV. The First Class encouraged her to study hard and be a useful person.
Another exciting thing to bring her the sense of ceremony is flag-raising ceremony. On Monday morning, students were dressed in school uniforms and stood in a neat (整齐) line on the playground quietly. While Li Xin was singing along with the national anthem (国歌) and watching the rising flag, the sense of national pride and love for the country came into her heart.
Li Xin will leave junior high school this year. She expects the moving moment of graduation ceremony. She will never forget the important people in her life who helped and supported her-her parents, her teachers and her friends. She will consider what they’ve done for her and hope that they will be proud of her in the future.
4. As for Li Lei, he can’t wait to grow up, as he can make his own decisions then. He always asks a question, “At what age do I really become an adult?” In China, the 18th birthday is a very important event for young people because they can vote (投票) and learn to drive a car, so Mrs. Li regards Li Lei’s birthday as a most important event. She will have a big birthday party for her son. Li Lei realizes no matter how old he is, becoming an adult is really about learning how to be independent and responsible.

When people across China are preparing for the Spring Festival, a Chinese AI app is becoming popular around the world. The Chinese AI app DeepSeek became the most popular free app on the Apple App Store worldwide, ahead of ChatGPT from OpenAI, Gemini from Google, and Llama 2 from Meta.
In January 2025, the Chinese AI company DeepSeek introduced its new open-source model (开放源代码模型), DeepSeekR1. Because this model has made progress by using deep learning methods that let the AI develop reasoning skills by itself, it can work as well as the best models from big companies like OpenAI. It can answer math questions, write computer codes, and even explain difficult texts in simple ways. Ms. Li, an English teacher, said, “Its five clear steps to solve problems, just like a patient teacher.”
What surprises the world most is that the cost for users will be lower than that of other companies. The app quickly caught the world’s attention: Marc Andreessen, a famous business expert in Silicon Valley, wrote online, “DeepSeekRl is one of the most amazing and exciting developments I’ve ever seen.”
From classrooms to offices, DeepSeek is changing how Chinese people use technology. It shows the growth of Chinese AI technology on the world stage. As AI keeps developing, this young company is writing a new story for China’s tech future.

Now the ceremony is over. We will leave school soon. I feel very excited because I am one of the best graduates. At the same time, I am a little upset because I have to say goodbye sadly to my classmates and teachers. I want to take some photos with them and I will give some gifts to my teachers as well. I hope I can be an astronaut when I grow up.
Maria, Jane and Michael will go back to their hometowns tomorrow and I will see them off at the airport. Do you still remember me, Liangliang, an 11-year-old boy from a small village? My friends and I used to go on a ropeway to cross a big river to school.
Thanks to our government and the nice people, the villagers’ dream has come true. There is a big and wide bridge over the river. And besides, the villagers have lived in the new buildings and worked in factories in our village.
As for me, with the love and encouragement from kind people, I had no fear on the way to my dream. Last year I graduated from a university. To follow the call of rural revitalization (乡村振兴), I chose to build my hometown as an engineer with some of my friends. In fact, with Chinese Dream, great changes have taken place everywhere in China in the last few years. China has also got many achievements such as 5G, high-speed railway, Beidou Navigation.
Now our government is carrying out a lot of projects such as urban-rural integration (城乡融合), ecological tourism (生态旅游) to increase people’s income and improve the quality of their life. More and more people would like to return to their hometowns to do some meaningful things.
“Where there are dreams, actions and union, there is a way.” I believe Chinese will continue getting together and working hard to get more achievements in the near future.

Today, I want to introduce my favorite museum to all of you. 伦敦的科学博物馆是世界上最友好的。People talk about what they can see and do here, and there are some very noisy machines as well. If people want answers to all their questions about science, this is the right place for them.
Many children like to visit the rooms on the second and third floors. They can learn about communications and the environment as well as maths, physics and chemistry. For example, you can find out how people dig coal from the ground and use it to create energy.
The Launchpad on the third floor is the most popular room, because there are lots of physics experiments. For example, if people want to fill a bag with sand, they have to control a kind of truck on wheels and move it into the correct place. People can also find out how people travel into space and back again. On the fourth and fifth floors, people can learn about what medicine was like in the past.
The Science Museum is interesting for people of all ages. People can always find something new and have a wonderful time there. The museum is free to enter, so people can go in for a few minutes or stay all day. It is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum!

A total of 23 spotted seals (斑海豹) were put back into the waters off the coast of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Tuesday, Dec.12, 2023 as part of China’s continuous efforts to protect endangered wildlife.
The seals were hunted and sold, but have now been saved and marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea. They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home.
Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They are the only kind of seals that can breed (繁殖) in Chinese waters. Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study and research on spotted seals.
To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment, the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992. In January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance. Covering an area of 560,000 hectares with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands are rich in biological resources. They have become home to nationally protected animals such as the spotted seal, finless porpoise, killer whales, false killer whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and East Asian river dolphins.

While past US and Soviet missions have collected samples from the moon’s near side, the Chinese mission is the first that has collected samples from the far side.
The moon program is part of a growing rivalry (竞争) with the US—still the leader in space exploration--and others, including Japan and India. China has put its own space station in orbit (轨道) and regularly sends astronauts there.
China’s leader Xi Jinping sent a message of congratulations to the Chang’e team, saying that it was a “landmark achievement in our country’s effects at becoming a space and technological power”.
The probe left Earth on May 3, and its journey lasted 53 days. Scientists are hoping that the simple materials contain traces of meteorite (陨石) strikes from the moon’s past.
Experts believe that the aim of future missions will be not only to explore, but to take control of the moon’s resources.

After finishing high school, she chose to major (主修) in dance performance in college.
In 2015, Yang set up an arts center to spread Hani music and dance. Under her guidance (指导) and teaching, more and more local kids fell in love with Hani dance. “The Hani dance has beautiful moves and shows strong life. Why not bring it to a bigger stage?” said Yang.
Yang also set up a street dance group with street dancers from other areas of Yunnan. They mix street dance moves with their local dance style to show their love for their own culture. Her arts center later set up a recording studio (工作室) to record the voices of its students and Hani folk singers.

(2025·山东东营广饶一中·一模)How will geography affect your life? For some children around the world, the environment they grow up in has a huge influence on their lives. This is the case in Madagascar, an island country in Africa, where a 3D-printed school is now being built.

Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 700 animal species in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals, and because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature.
Destroying one kind of animal can cause many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks (鹰), the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice, the rats and mice multiplied quickly.
