B My father once told me some advice he’d been given by his teachers at boarding school in mid-century rural France. The school had an enormous library of old books and the boys were encouraged to read at least two hours a day. “The advice,” he said, “was that if after the first 50 pages of a book you don’t get hooked, you’re allowed to stop reading and try again later when you feel ready for it.” My father credits this advice with lighting his lifelong love of literature. Because he spent his entire working life as a manual labourer, books for him have always belonged to a private, mostly domestic and almost sacred realm. I’ve never seen anyone read the way my father reads. He is the most compulsive and prolific reader I know. I don’t think my father intended to hand the 50-page guideline down to me. He’s not the sort to give advice and I’m not the sort to invite it. But I find it’s the advice that’s delivered obliquely that is most likely to be listened to. I particularly like the gentle suggestion to return to a book “when you feel ready for it”. "It’s a recognition that reading is inherently relational and that this relationship is not static. A couple of Christmases ago my father gave me a hardcover copy of Mrs Dalloway, but try as I might I can’t understand it. I feel a slight shame at this, but I try to follow his advice and remember I just need to give it time. I like to think my father’s readerly advice can be applied to life more generally and to other people, too. Give things a fair chance; don’t judge too hastily. It’s helped me when travelling, when confronted with underwhelming landscapes, unanticipated delays and awkward social situations. Resisting the urge to escape, or to complain, or to dismiss, has meant I’ve come to appreciate the particular charm of a wide variety of places and personalities. 24. What does the underlined word “hooked” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Disappointed. B. Interested. C. Surprised. D. Ashamed. 25. How does the author’s father like the advice on reading? A. Foolish. B. Popular. C. Inspiring. D. Impractical. 26. Why is Mrs Dalloway mentioned? A. To display the difficulty in writing a book. B. To demonstrate the significance of reading. C. To stress the popularity of books with hardcovers. D. To show the application of the author’s father’s advice. 27. Which of the following might the author agree with? A. Save for a rainy day. B. Imperfection is beauty. C. Good medicine tastes bitter. D. Patience is of great importance. C The Clovis points used by prehistoric hunters to kill animals are also remarkably efficient at cutting meat off a large animal carcass (动物尸体) — at least according to a modern bull butchering experiment. The finding complicates our knowledge of prehistoric hunting practices. Archaeologists teamed up with modern hunters to compare how well copies of two types of prehistoric stone tools could harvest meat from an animal carcass. They used a humanely killed bull weighing more than 450 kilograms. ‌“This study actually showed that the Clovis points were more effective than what was presumed to be the butchery tool,” says Met in Eren at Kent State University in Ohio. The five hunters, associated with the MeatEater, an outdoor lifestyle company, spent just 3 hours and 10 minutes in completely butchering the bull using both stone tools. But the Clovis points achieved a butchering efficiency of 0.38 kilograms of meat per minute, whereas the hand-held stone flake tools processed 0.34 kilograms of meat per minute. The Clovis points, which were mounted on wooden handles, had the added benefit of not injuring any users, but the Clovis points also required frequent resharpening during the butchering. This is important because those things are not easy to make. Another surprise came from how a Clovis point broke in a way that was nearly identical to how another Clovis point on an atlatl weapon broke when thrown at an elephant carcass in a previous study. ‌“The possibility of snap breaks (折断) being mistaken for impact breaks is an eye-opener from the standpoint of interpreting how the Clovis points might have been used,” says Vance Holliday at the University of Arizona, who did not participate in the study. That means broken Clovis points discovered at prehistoric archaeological sites may not represent a‌“smoking gun for hunting”, as researchers previously believed. They could instead show how people ‌“came across an already dead animal and ate it”, says Eren. 28. What can we know about the Clovis points? A. They were the most popular tools used by prehistoric hunters. B. They were difficult to make due to their complicated design. C. They were more useful and practical than previously assumed. D. They were used by modern hunters for butchering experiments. 29. Which aspect did the archaeologists concentrate on? A. The efficiency of modern hunting tools. B. The technique of stone tool manufacturing. C The comparison of different hunting practices. D. The meat harvesting capacity of prehistoric tools. 30. What does ‌“This” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. The benefit of the Clovis points. B. The efficiency of the Clovis points. C. Resharpening the Clovis points regularly. D. Redesigning the Clovis points frequently. 31. What does Vance Holliday think of the finding? A Significant. B. Funny. C. Meaningless. D. Unscientific. D When you hear the term “muscle memory”, it brings up images of your muscles being able to memorize certain movements, but while muscle memory is real, that’s not what is actually going on in your body. What’s more, science says there are two different kinds of muscle memory. One type, neurological, is tied to the recall of learned activity, while the other form, physiological, is related to the regrowth of actual muscle tissue. The neurological form of muscle memory has to do with the phenomenon in which it appears our muscles are “remembering” specific movements. Even if you haven’t ridden a bicycle in several years, for example, you can probably hop on one and pedal with ease. But the reason you can ride that bike is not because the muscles in your legs or fingers memorized the necessary movements. Instead, it’s due to motor learning that occurred in the central nervous system. Through continued repetition of certain movements, your brain creates strong and efficient neural pathways to transmit the appropriate signals to whatever body part needs to be activated. This type of muscle memory also means your brain no longer has to think so much about the movement, said Brett Johnson, an expert in neurology. The physiological side of muscle memory has to do with the ability to regain lost muscles quickly. This is often seen in people who frequent the gym, then have a prolonged break in their routine. While they may lose muscle mass due to their inactivity, it will typically return more quickly than when they first put it on. This form of muscle memory occurs because when you first build muscles, your body adds new cells to those muscles. But when you lose muscles, those new cells don’t disappear, as previously thought. Instead, they stick around and are easily reactivated when you return to your typical routine. “Don’t stay away from biking so long that you forget how to bike. The longer you stay away from an activity, the longer it takes your brain to get back to it. Your muscles, too.” In addition, exercise is not just about muscle memory but also about willpower. “And your willpower gets weaker the more distant you are from activity,” Johnson said. 32. Why can a boy still ride a bike even if he hasn’t ridden one for several years? A. His brain has built powerful neural pathways. B. His brain no longer has to think about the movement. C. His body has the ability to quickly regain lost muscles. D. His leg muscles have memorized the necessary movements. 33. How does the physiological side of muscle memory work? A. It allows the brain to recall learned activity. B. It helps create new ever-lasting cells in muscles. C. It allows us to quickly regain lost muscle mass. D. It enables muscles to memorize specific movements.· 34. What does Johnson intend to convey in the last paragraph? A. Cycling is a good way to stay healthy. B. Willpower goes beyond physical strength. C. We should practise regularly to be skilled. D. Muscle memory results from gentle exercise. 35. In which column of a newspaper can we most possibly read the text? A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Technology. D. Culture. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Hodophobia—a fear of travel—can similarly interfere with the way someone views and interacts with the world. ____36____ Like other phobias, it’s usually specific to the individual with regard to how it shows up in their lives and how severely it affects them. In severe cases, they might even have full-blown panic attacks at the thought of traveling and therefore avoid thinking about it—much less doing it. This phobia can interfere with work, family obligations and personal pleasure, as it may influence one’s ability to participate in travel plans they actually want to carry out. ____37____ Hodophobia can result from different types of experiences or exposure. It may be that an individual experienced an unpleasant event while traveling themselves or heard of a major world event—like a deadly plane crash—and developed the fear based on hearing about the tragedy. ____38____ And it can play a role in developing the phobia later in life. ____39____ Psychologists might try exposure therapy, group therapy or a combination or approaches. As with any phobia, the goal of treatment is desensitization. The therapist and the client work together to gradually overcome the fear of traveling. It may be helpful to plan out each leg of the journey, from how you are going to get from your home to the airport, to the gate and to your seat on the plane, etc. ____40____ Give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to be in order to avoid additional anxiety or fear around arriving late. A. Talking with a therapist is key to managing the condition. B. Visualizing what a successful journey could look like might help. C. Hodophobia is an irrational and often paralyzing fear of traveling. D. Unpleasant travel experiences in childhood can leave a lasting imprint. E. It may cause the affected person clinically significant emotional distress. F. Below, experts break down the symptoms, causes and coping mechanisms. G. Jack wasn’t the strongest in the fire department, but everyone knew he had the biggest heart. He had always wanted to be a firefighter, ever since he was a little boy. For him, it wasn’t about the thrill; it was about helping people when they needed it the most. One cold winter night, the fire alarm rang loudly at the station. A large building was on fire, and there were people trapped inside. The whole team rushed to the scene, sirens blaring. The flames roared, licking the night sky, and the smoke was thick and black. The chief, seeing the intensity of the fire, ordered everyone to focus on stopping the fire from spreading while he sent a smaller team to rescue the trapped family. Jack was one of them. Inside, the heat was unbearable, and the smoke made it hard to see. But Jack thought of the scared family and pressed on. He heard faint cries from above and rushed to the second floor. There, he found a mother, father, and two small children trapped in a room. With the flames closing in, Jack knew he had to act fast. He radioed for backup, but there was a problem outside. The fire had reached some nearby trees, and the other firefighters were doing their best to contain it. Realizing he was on his own, Jack remembered a safety technique he had learned during training. He prepared some towels, which would be tied around the family members’ face to help breathe through the smoke, and then, using his own body as a shield, he ushered the family one by one down the stairs and out of the burning building. It took what felt like hours, but in reality, it was only minutes. By the time Jack got the last child out, the backup had arrived, and the fire was extinguished. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 The family, though coughing and covered in dirt, was safe and sound. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The story of Jack’s bravery spread throughout Elmwood. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高考模拟卷·英语 (120分钟 150分) 考生须知: 1. What does the woman think of the chicken? The Reverend Kevin Zaborney from the USA created the event to promote the emotional benefits of hugging. There is a lot of research that shows hugging is good for us. Dr Jay Gordon wrote a book called “Brighter Baby”, which said hugging a child every day will enhance the child's intellectual development. Unlike kissing, hugging is acceptable in most societies. It can be a form of greeting between friends, a way of celebrating a victory, or a way of showing your support for someone. Hugging also takes place in the animal world. We even see the Teletubbies TV characters showing off their hugging skills as they give each other a “big hug”. 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A Accounting and Finance Course in University of Southampton Learn how to prepare and interpret financial and managerial information for a variety of users. (欧盟和其他国际学生一年的学费是 22300 英镑。)”可知,一个德国学生(德国属于欧盟国家)一年学费是22300英镑,那么两年的学费就是22300×2=44600英镑。故选D项。 B My father once told me some advice he’d been given by his teachers at boarding school in mid-century rural France. B 25. C 26. D 27. 根据划线单词句中““The advice,” he said, “was that if after the first 50 pages of a book you don’t get…, you’re allowed to stop reading and try again later when you feel ready for it.”(“我的建议是,”他说,“如果读完一本书的前50页,你还没有被……,你就可以停止阅读,等你觉得准备好了再试一次。”)”以及第二段第一句“My father credits this advice with lighting his lifelong love of literature.( 我父亲把这个建议归功于点燃了他一生对文学的热爱。)” B 选项“Interested(感兴趣的)”符合语境。 根据第二段“My father credits this advice with lighting his lifelong love of literature.( 我父亲把这个建议归功于点燃了他一生对文学的热爱。)” 根据第三段“A couple of Christmases ago my father gave me a hardcover copy of Mrs Dalloway, but try as I might I can’t understand it. I feel a slight shame at this, but I try to follow his advice and remember I just need to give it time.( 几年前的圣诞节,我父亲给了我一本精装版的《达洛维夫人》,但无论我怎么努力,我还是看不懂。 根据文章大意以及最后一段中“Give things a fair chance; don’t judge too hastily. It’s helped me when travelling, when confronted with underwhelming landscapes, unanticipated delays and awkward social situations. Resisting the urge to escape, or to complain, or to dismiss, has meant I’ve come to appreciate the particular charm of a wide variety of places and personalities.( 给事情一个公平的机会;不要草率下结论。 由此可推知,作者可能同意的观点是“Patience is of great importance(耐心非常重要)”。故选D项。 C The Clovis points used by prehistoric hunters to kill animals are also remarkably efficient at cutting meat off a large animal carcass (动物尸体) — at least according to a modern bull butchering experiment. C. The comparison of different hunting practices. C 29. D 30. C 31. 根据第一段“The Clovis points used by prehistoric hunters to kill animals are also remarkably efficient at cutting meat off a large animal carcass (动物尸体) — at least according to a modern bull butchering experiment. The finding complicates our knowledge of prehistoric hunting practices.(至少根据一项现代公牛屠宰实验,史前猎人用来杀死动物的克洛维斯矛头在从大型动物尸体上切肉方面也非常有效。这一发现使我们对史前狩猎方式的认识更加复杂)”以及第二段中“This study actually showed that the Clovis points were more effective than what was presumed to be the butchery tool(这项研究实际上表明,克洛维斯矛头比被认为是屠宰工具的东西更有效)”可知,克洛维斯矛头比之前认为的更有用和实用。 根据第二段中“Archaeologists teamed up with modern hunters to compare how well copies of two types of prehistoric stone tools could harvest meat from an animal carcass.(考古学家与现代猎人合作,比较两种史前石器的复制品从动物尸体上获取肉的效果如何)”可知,考古学家关注的是史前工具的肉类获取能力。 根据划线词所在句“The Clovis points, which were mounted on wooden handles, had the added benefit of not injuring any users, but the Clovis points also required frequent resharpening during the butchering. This is important because those things are not easy to make.(安装在木柄上的克洛维斯矛头还有一个好处,就是不会伤害任何使用者,但在屠宰过程中,克洛维斯矛头也需要经常重新打磨。 根据第四段中Vance Holliday的话“The possibility of snap breaks (折断) being mistaken for impact breaks is an eye-opener from the standpoint of interpreting how the Clovis points might have been used(从解释克洛维斯矛头可能的使用方式的角度来看,折断被误认为是撞击断裂的可能性是一个令人大开眼界的发现)”可知,万斯·霍利迪认为这一发现很有意义。故选A项。 D When you hear the term “muscle memory”, it brings up images of your muscles being able to memorize certain movements, but while muscle memory is real, that’s not what is actually going on in your body. B. Health. C. Technology. D. Culture. A 33. C 34. C 35. 根据第二段中“Even if you haven’t ridden a bicycle in several years, for example, you can probably hop on one and pedal with ease. But the reason you can ride that bike is not because the muscles in your legs or fingers memorized the necessary movements. Instead, it’s due to motor learning that occurred in the central nervous system. Through continued repetition of certain movements, your brain creates strong and efficient neural pathways to transmit the appropriate signals to whatever body part needs to be activated.( 例如,即使你已经好几年没有骑过自行车了,你也可以轻松地骑上一辆自行车。 故选A项。 根据第三段中“The physiological side of muscle memory has to do with the ability to regain lost muscles quickly. This is often seen in people who frequent the gym, then have a prolonged break in their routine. While they may lose muscle mass due to their inactivity, it will typically return more quickly than when they first put it on.( 肌肉记忆的生理方面与迅速恢复失去的肌肉的能力有关。 根据最后一段““Don’t stay away from biking so long that you forget how to bike. The longer you stay away from an activity, the longer it takes your brain to get back to it. Your muscles, too.” In addition, exercise is not just about muscle memory but also about willpower. “And your willpower gets weaker the more distant you are from activity,” Johnson said.( “不要长时间不骑自行车,以至于你都忘了怎么骑了。 Hodophobia—a fear of travel—can similarly interfere with the way someone views and interacts with the world. E. The family, though coughing and covered in dirt, was safe and sound. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The story of Jack’s bravery spread throughout Elmwood. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: The family, though coughing and covered in dirt, was safe and sound. The mother, tears streaming down her face, embraced Jack tightly, thanking him repeatedly for his bravery. The father vigorously shook Jack’s hand, his eyes shining with gratitude and admiration. The children, too young to understand the gravity of the situation, simply smiled, their innocent faces lit up with relief. Jack, feeling a rush of affection and comfort within his chest, returned their smiles, knowing that he had made a difference in their lives. The story of Jack’s bravery spread throughout Elmwood. People he had never met would stop him on the street to thank him. Schools invited him to speak to students, and soon, many children in Elmwood dreamt of becoming firefighters, inspired by Jack ’s act of courage. But for Jack, it wasn't about the fame or recognition. Every time someone mentioned that day, he’d simply say, “I did what any of us in the fire department would do.” 段落续写: ①由第一段首句“The family, though coughing and covered in dirt, was safe and sound.(这家人虽然咳嗽,满身尘土,但安然无恙。)” 词汇激活: 行为类: ①拥抱:embrace/hug, ②重复地:repeatedly/again and against ③表彰:recognition/praise。 情绪类: ①泪流满面:tears streaming down her face/tears course down her cheeks. ②感激:with gratitude/full of appreciation ③欣慰:with relief/be gratified 【点睛】【高分句型1】The mother, tears streaming down her face, embraced Jack tightly, thanking him repeatedly for his bravery.(运用了独立主格结构和现在分词作状语) 【高分句型2】Jack, feeling a rush of affection and comfort within his chest, returned their smiles, knowing that he had made a difference in their lives.(运用了现在分词作表语,和that引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$100所名校高考模拟金典卷英语十第一部分听力第一节听下面5段对话,每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的ABC3个选项中选出最佳选项。 Hurry up, daddy is waiting outside in the . taxi just a minute. No, I was busy playing this game on my phone. I know well. If I don't come back by tomorrow morning, you can call the park keeper. He'll probably send out a search group to look for me. Okay, okay, i'm coming with you, but we're not taking food and we're coming back before dark. I'm going for a walk in the woods. Do you want to join me? Not really. I in the middle of a game. Do you have too many sad memories? The only thing i'm sad about is how I treated my brother. We used to be very close when we were Younger, but when I started getting popular in school, I stopped spending time with him. I regret IT so much. Now we hardly ever talk. I miss him. He's probably still hurt. Why don't you learn from him your mistake and call him? Maybe he misses you just as much as you miss him. I don't know. Maybe he's too angry to talk to me. We're both this stubbs donkeys. All you can do is try. If IT works, you'll both be happier. You're right. I've been running from my past for too long. I'm his older brother. After all, he used to look up to me. Maybe he still respects me enough to give me a second chance. I think it's the right choice. Good luck. Sometimes I wish I could forget the past.
