Japan is starting to experiment with self-driving buses in rural (乡村的) communities, such as the town of Nishikata, where the elderly are living a hard life because of fewer bus and taxi services as the population ages and becomes smaller.
The advance of the self-driving technology is making cities such as Paris and Singapore experiment with such services, which could prove important in Japan, where populations are not only graying, but becoming smaller, in rural areas.
Japan could start the self-driving services for communities that are far from cities by 2020, if the experiments begun this month prove successful.
The government plans to turn highway rest stops into centers from which to drive the elderly to medical and banking services.
“Smaller towns in Japan are graying even faster than cities, and there are just not enough workers to drive buses and taxis,” said Hiroshi Nakajima of mobile gaming software maker DeNA Co.
In the initial (最初的) experiments, the elderly of Nishikata were sent from a service area to some organizations providing healthcare services.
“I worry about not being able to go out when I’m no longer able to drive,” said one test rider, Shizu Yuzawa, adding that she would be open to using such services.
The test also checked the vehicle’s safety in road conditions, and if those crossing its path would react to the warning it gives.
The ride, at a speed of about 10 kilometers per hour, felt comfortable and safe, said test taker Mieko Shimazaki, 71, but her 72-year-old husband, Susumu, said, “Self-driving cars could be useful in the future, but I’d like to see them go faster, at least at 40 kilometers per hour.”
24. Why are driverless buses appearing in Nishikata?
A. Nobody there can drive a bus.
B. Its population is aging and falling.
C. People there welcome new things.
D. People there can hardly afford cars.
25. What does the government plan to do?
A. Provide healthcare services.
B. Train more bus and taxi drivers.
C. Produce more and more driverless cars.
D. Set up centers for picking up passengers.
26. What was Shizu Yuzawa’s attitude toward the self-driving services?
A. She was uncertain about them.
B. She was doubtful about them.
C. She was in favor of them.
D. She was strongly against them.
27. Which of the following about self-driving buses did Susumu think could improve?
A. Their speed. B. Their safety.
C. Their space. D. Their price.

There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, “I am here and you are not alone.”
I memorized every detail about my children. As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease them back to sleep. They clung to me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.
As they grew older and more independent, I noticed that they didn't hold my hand much any more. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now.
But when you've been needed so much for such a long time, it's hard to step back and feel unnecessary.
Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, “Hang on to me, Mom,” then led me safely across.
At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways than before.
That scene has replayed in various ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it “touches” you from afar.
28. How did the author get along with her children when they were young?
A. She overprotected them. B. She was very strict with them.
C. She developed a close connection with them. D. She was too busy to look after them.
29. How did the author feel when her kids became more independent?
A She felt lonely when living apart from them.
B. She was worried that they couldn't manage themselves.
C. She was glad to be able to step back and enjoy herself.
D. She felt a bit uncomfortable when not needed so much as before.
30. The author's visit to her son in New York made her realize ________.
A. she needed her son more than before
B. her son had become mature and reliable
C. time with children is always happy
D. she was unwilling to accept the change in their roles
31. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?
A. To show the power of the touch of a hand.
B. To show how parents affect their kids.
C. To explore how to interact with children.
D. To describe the growth of her children.
D
People have many different ways to relax during break time at work or school. Smartphones are probably the number one choice for a quick mental vacation. Although it might seem like a good time, the result is opposite, according to a recent psychological study from Rutgers University.
For the study, more than 400 students were asked to finish a set of 20 word puzzles. Halfway though the task, the students were divided into three groups. One group was allowed to take a break and use cellphones to buy things online. The second group was asked to have a rest and buy things using a computer. The last group didn't take any break at all.
Surprisingly, the group that used their cellphones during the break went back to work feeling the most tired and least motivated to continue. They also had the hardest time solving the remaining word puzzles.
Terri Kurtzberg, co-author of the study, explained that they assumed looking at cellphones during a break would be no different from any other break—but instead, the phone may cause increasing levels of distraction that make it difficult to return focused attention to work tasks.
“Cellphones may have this effect because even just seeing your phone activates thoughts of checking messages, connecting with people, and more, in ways that are different than how we use other screens like computers, and laptops," Kurtzberg said.
This is echoed by a recent study from the US University of Chicago. It found that even if cellphones are turned off or turned face down, their mere presence reduces a person's cognitive capacity.
32. What can we learn from the study?
A. The participants were divided into groups at the beginning.
B. The last group had the hardest time solving the word puzzles.
C. Computers and laptops cause more distraction.
D. Cellphones may make people less focused on work.
33. What does the underlined word “echoed” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Agreed. B. Remembered. C. Overcome. D. Complained.
34. What suggestion will the author give in the following paragraph?
A. Try putting your smartphone away during your next break.
B. Using computers to shop online rather than cellphones.
C. Stop checking messages and connecting with people by cellphone.
D. Turning off your cellphone during work time.
35. What's the text mainly about?
A. Ways to relax for students. B. The result from a word- puzzle game.
C. A study on using smart-phones to relax. D. Effects brought by the smart-phone.

After spending a term in Spain, I have been trying to work out which common impressions on Spain have some truth in them and which don't.___36___
Spain is always warm and sunny. This is not true. The city I stayed in, which is in central Spain, often becomes colder than London in winter. However, the city receives little rain all year round and gets very hot in summer.____37____In Andalusia of southern Spain, for example, temperature can be cool but pleasant in winter, but becomes very high in summer.
The Spanish love to have fun.____38____The Spanish people I meet tend to be very warm and open. Spaniards love to celebrate life through different festivals throughout the year. As well as religious festivals, they celebrate others such as La Tomatina, a festival in Valencia where people throw tomatoes at each other.
___39___This is true. Both locals and tourists enjoy watching Flamenco shows just as much, especially in Andalusia. It is also possible to see them in Madrid and Barcelona, but they tend to be more for tourists. I recommend seeing a Flamenco show in Cadiz or Jerez de la Frontera. The flamenco in Cadiz takes on a more cheerful style. Maybe this is because the people of Cadiz live by the sea and have access to beautiful sandy beaches.
Spain is a fascinating country, in which you are sure to have lots of fun. I find that a lot of the common impressions on Spain hold some truth.____40____Spanish culture is very complex and the traditions and culture, as well as food and weather, can vary between regions.
A. Spain is famous for its Flamenco.
B. Here’s what I have discovered so far.
C. But the country is not limited to them.
D. I have seen a lot of evidence that this is true.
E. The following are correct impressions on Spain.
F. Southern Spain tends to be warmer than northern Spain.
G. Northern Spain is colder in summer and also colder in winter.

【答案】18. B 19. A 20. B
【解析】
【原文】W: As the car industry develops, traffic accidents have become as familiar as the common cold. Yet their causes and control remain a serious problem that is difficult to solve. Experts have long recognized that this discouraging problem has many causes. At the very least, it is a problem that involves three factors: the driver, the vehicle and the roadway. If all of the drivers exercised good judgment at all times, there would be few accidents. Improved design has helped to make highways much safer. But the number of accidents continues to rise because of human failure and an enormous increase in the number of automobiles on the road. Attention is now turning increasingly to the third cause of the accidents: the car itself. People want to know how cars can be built better to protect the drivers. So there are also some new driverless cars on the road. Are they really safe?

【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A

30. The author's visit to her son in New York made her realize ________.
A. she needed her son more than before
B. her son had become mature and reliable
C. time with children is always happy
D. she was unwilling to accept the change in their roles
31. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?

【答案】32. D 33. A 34. A 35. C
