Maples are known for their autumn colors. Many species put on a display of oranges, browns, yellows, and reds every year. Here are four excellent species of maple for your landscape.
Bigleaf maple
Native Area: North America
Height: 50 to 100 feet
As the name suggests, the leaves are quite large on this tree. It has the biggest leaves of any maple; the classic palm-shape leaves can be over 12 inches wide. This large tree is an excellent shade tree for large landscapes and parks.
Hedge maple
Native Area: Europe and Asia
Height: 25 to 35 feet
The hedge maple is a great choice for the urban garden, as it does well in many severe environments: drought, salty soils, shady locations, and climates where there is ozone deficiency. It can also be used as a street tree if the power lines are high enough.
Norway maple
Native Area: Europe and Asia
Height: usually 40 to 50 feet
Known either as Norway maple or European maple, this popular species was brought to North America from Europe in the 18th century. It has since become one of the most common trees. In the right settings, this species may become invasive (侵入的), so before planting it, check to make sure it is not a problem in your region.
Hornbeam maple
Native Area: Japan
Height: 15 to 30 feet
Many species of plant within a genus have a similar appearance, but there can be surprises, as is the case with the hornbeam maple. Its leaves are nothing like what you expect from a maple. This can be a somewhat difficult plant to find for sale, but it can make a good small tree or a large shrub (灌木) in the landscape.
1. What might the name of the first maple be based on?
A. Its height. B. Its native area.
C. The size of its leaves. D. The function it performs.
2. Which can adapt to various challenging environments?
A. The bigleaf maple. B. The hedge maple.
C. The norway maple. D. The hornbeam maple.
3. What can we learn about the hornbeam maple?
A. Its leaves look like hands.
B. It is larger than other maples.
C. It is easy to find for sale at the market.
D. Its leaves differ from those of typical maples.
【答案】1. C 2. B 3. D

On June 6th Columbia University announced that it will no longer cooperate with US News World Report’s undergraduate rankings. It is the first top institution to do so. Might its departure be the start of a mass departure?
Columbia’s decision follows a ranking scandal (丑闻) last year. In February 2022, one of Columbia’s own maths professors accused the college of having used “outdated and/or incorrect data” in several areas.
In the 1980s, potential students started to expand their college search beyond their local area, and it was hard to learn about universities and compare them. Hence, US News began ranking America’s top universities in 1983, and has released its findings annually since 1988.
Universities have put in significant effort to move up in the ratings. Richard Freeland, Northeastern University’s former president, capped class sizes to enhance student engagement and guarantee class quality. Consequently, it moved from 127th in 2003 to 44th this year.
The ranking system used to seem unstoppable. Universities have tried to get rid of it before, only to find that doing so can backfire badly. US News still ranks non-participating universities, using publicly available information, and the data often do not go in their favour. Columbia did not submit data for this year’s analysis, and its ranking fell from second in 2021-22 to 18th in 2022-23.
Recently the mood has begun to change, however, especially among graduate schools. In 2022, of the 15 highest-ranked law schools, only the University of Chicago submitted data.
In May US News announced changes to its ranking methodology. It is moving away from metrics (度量标准) that rely on reputation and towards student outcomes. One way or another, the rankings-and universities more broadly-are in a state of constant change.
4. What is true about the US News undergraduate rankings?
A. It faked the information for the ratings.
B. It filled an information gap in the past.
C. It promoted the quality of higher education.
D. It’s been released every year for 40 years.
5. What does the underlined word “capped” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Limited. B. Maintained. C. Increased. D. Doubled.
6. What will happen to a university if it does not cooperate with US News?
A. Its information will be removed.
B. It will be excluded from the list forever.
C. Its ranking will probably suffer consequently.
D. It will certainly be charged with using incorrect data.
7. US News undergraduate rankings may focus more on ______________________in the future.
A. the changing mood of universities
B. the instant fame of universities
C. achievements of university graduates
D. scores given by former students
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. C

Researchers have developed a material made of collagen protein (胶原蛋白) from pig’s skin, which resembles the human cornea (眼角膜) and restored vision to 20 people. The promising result of the trial brings hope to people suffering from corneal blindness.
An estimated 12.7 million people around the world are blind due to their corneas being damaged or diseased. Their only way of regaining vision is to receive a transplanted cornea from a human donor. But just one in 70 patients receives a cornea transplant. Furthermore, most of them live in low and middle-income countries in which access to treatments is very limited.
To avoid the above disadvantages of traditional cornea treatment, the researchers used collagen protein from pig’s skin. “It is possible to develop a biomaterial that meets all the criteria for being used as human implants (移植物), which can be mass-produced and reach more people with vision problems,” said Professor Neil Lagali. While donated corneas must be used within two weeks, the bioengineered corneas can be stored for up to two years before use. The pig skin used is a byproduct of the food industry, making it easy to access.
The researchers have also developed a new surgical method for treating the disease. No stitches (缝针) are needed with this new method. In a pilot study, 14 of the 20 participants were blind before the operation. After two years, all of the patients regained their sight. Three of the Indian participants who had been blind had perfect vision after the operation.
The researchers also want to study whether the technology can be used to treat more eye diseases, and whether the implant can be adapted to the individual for even greater effectiveness.
8. What is the disadvantage of traditional cornea treatment?
A. Serious side effects. B. Low availability rate.
C. Poor medical equipment. D. Complicated surgical process.
9. What do we know about the biomaterial?
A. It has higher production costs. B. It can be stored for much longer.
C. It is able to be used for several times. D. It can help people prevent vision problems.
10. Which of the following best describes the new surgical method?
A. Successful. B. Ineffective. C. Convenient. D. Controversial.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To spread knowledge about cornea donation.
B. To show the difficulties of treating blindness.
C. To call on people to protect their eyes properly.
D. To present a new breakthrough in the medical field.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. D

With the help from an artificial language (AL) model, MIT neuroscientists have discovered what kind of sentences are most likely to fire up the brain’s key language processing centers. The new study reveals that sentences that are more complex, because of either unusual grammar or unexpected meaning, generate stronger responses in these language processing centers. Sentences that are very straightforward barely engage these regions, and meaningless orders of words don’t do much for them either.
In this study, the researchers focused on language-processing regions found in the left hemisphere (半球) of the brain. By collecting a set of 1,000 sentences from various sources, the researchers measured the brain activity of participants using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they read the sentences. The same sentences were also fed into a large language model, similar to ChatGPT, to measure the model’s activation patterns. Once the researchers had all of those data, they trained the model to predict how the human language network would respond to any new sentence based on how the artificial language network responded to these 1,000 sentences.
The researchers then used the model to determine 500 new sentences that would drive highest brain activity and sentences that would make the brain less active, and their findings were confirmed in subsequent human participants. To understand why certain sentences generate stronger brain responses, the model examined the sentences based on 11 different language characteristics. The analysis revealed that sentences that were more surprising resulted in greater brain activity. Another linguistic (语言的) aspect that correlated with the brain’s language network responses was the complexity of the sentences, which was determined by how well they followed English grammar rules and bow logically they linked with each other.
The researchers now plan to see if they can extend these findings in speakers of languages other than English. They also hope to explore what type of stimuli may activate language processing regions in the brain’s right hemisphere.
12. What sentences make our brain work harder?
A. Lengthy. B. Logical.
C. Straightforward. D. Complicated.
13. What is the function of the AL model in the research?
A. To examine language network. B. To reduce language complexity.
C. To locate language processing area. D. To identify language characteristics.
14. How did the researchers carry out their study?
A. By conducting interviews. B. By collecting questionnaires.
C. By analyzing experiment data. D. By reviewing previous studies.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. AL Model Stimulates Brain Activities
B. AL Model Speeds Up Language Learning
C. AL Model Reveals the Secrets of Brain Activation
D. AL Model Enhances Brain Processing Capacity
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. C

When we are faced with a crisis, or if we have an important decision to make, many of us fall into the trap of over-thinking. We may keep thinking about something constantly and too long. ____16____ How can we stop ourselves from over-thinking?
Doing something to distract yourself is a good idea. You can find working with your hands is especially good. ____17____ Your brain simply doesn’t have the resources to split itself into a third activity for example over-thinking.
____18____ Studies have shown that when someone views something in excitement and anxiety, the brain is forced to become stuck in the present because all of your senses are completely engaged. You do not have time to focus on something different, which can cause over-thinking.
Constant wishing, hoping and praying do not give you any relief. They just keep you stuck in one place. But taking the smallest step off the crisis really matters. It will set things in motion, making you like a snowball. ____19____
The traps are things that cause your natural ability to react without you realizing that there is a connection between the two. Thus, avoiding relevant traps is also a good idea. ____20____ For example, if one of your colleagues is so negative that she always drags you down, stop hanging out with her by having lunch alone at a nearby restaurant.
A. This mindset tends to ruin our day.
B. Put simply, out of sight, out of mind.
C. Just as a saying goes, once bitten, twice shy.
D. You are really getting your brain working for you.
E. Other activities are the ones that arouse your curiosity.
F. It engages your movement skills and thinking process.
G. Thus, you will gradually move yourself out of the feeling.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As I unzipped my lunchbox, the whole place was turned into a spicy curry (咖喱) dream. I immediately hid it under my seat, hoping no one would take notice.
Mom had really outdone herself with masala — our family’s all-time favorite dish back in India. But today, it wasn’t just about me and my lunch. A warm smile on his face, Ricky invited me, a new transfer student from India to New York city, for lunch.
“Ava, come sit here!” Ricky called out, gesturing towards a vacant seat.
As I made my way over, memories of those awkward lunchtimes when I studied in Kansas, one of the most conservative states, flooded back. I could still recall how everyone would wrinkle their noses and stare curiously when I unpacked my Indian food. It always made me feel like an outsider, like I didn’t belong.
Therefore, before my first day in this school, I had demanded my mom pack “normal” western-style food for me. I still remembered the look on her face upon hearing it, as she signed in disappointment and confusion, “Isn’t there a moment when you feel proud of your origin?” That was hurting, but not more hurting than others’ giggles and whispers. Honestly, long queues were common in Indian restaurants in New York city, a cultural melting pot, but I wouldn’t take that risk.
Unfortunately, this morning, Mom had forgotten to make sandwich or any “normal” food, so I had to bring leftovers from our dinner. At the thought of the possible oh-no-second (社死), I felt like being thrown into darkness.
However, before I came back to reality, Ricky noticed my sneaking (躲躲藏藏). “What do you have for lunch?” he asked, his eyes twinkling with interest. I tried to brush it off (搪塞), claiming I wasn’t hungry. But Ricky wouldn’t let it go, and before I could protest, he had the lid of my lunchbox open and I prepared myself for such familiar responses as “Ew” or “What is that?”
注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, I did not get what I was expecting.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After school, I found Mom preparing sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】However, I did not get what I was expecting. Ricky took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and savored the aroma of the masala. Instead of the usual stares and whispers, there was only interest on Ricky’s face. His face lit up with a broad smile, asking, “You mum made masala for your lunch?” Before I could make a response, he added: “I could be dying of envy! You know what, last Sunday, my parents and I queued up for three hours in harsh cold in fifth Avenue for the new India restaurant.” He enjoyed every bite, nodding his head in approval. It was a welcome change from the stares and whispers I had grown accustomed to.
After school, I found Mom preparing sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch. I came over and asked if I could have palak paneer in my lunchbox, which made her a bit confused. Finally, I told her about my experience with Ricky and how he had enjoyed my food. Mom’s face lit up with joy. “I’m glad he liked it,” she said. “And I’m even happier that you’re starting to feel proud of your roots again.” She paused and looked at me seriously. “Your culture, your traditions, and your food are all a part of who you are.” I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. Mom’s words had given me the courage to embrace my identity and share my culture with others.

Another linguistic (语言) aspect that correlated with the brain’s language network responses was the complexity of the sentences, which was determined by how well they followed English grammar rules and bow logically they linked with each other.
The researchers now plan to see if they can extend these findings in speakers of languages other than English. They also hope to explore what type of stimuli may activate language processing regions in the brain’s right hemisphere.
12. What sentences make our brain work harder?
A. Lengthy. B. Logical.
C. Straightforward. D. Complicated.
13. What is the function of the AL model in the research?
A. To examine language network. B. To reduce language complexity.
C. To locate language processing area. D. To identify language characteristics.
14. How did the researchers carry out their study?
A. By conducting interviews. B. By collecting questionnaires.
C. By analyzing experiment data. D. By reviewing previous studies.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. AL Model Stimulates Brain Activities
B. AL Model Speeds Up Language Learning
C. AL Model Reveals the Secrets of Brain Activation
D. AL Model Enhances Brain Processing Capacity
