When I challenged myself to travel by low-carbon routes during the writing of my book, I experienced the best and worst of our transit network. When public transport works, it really works. I found traveling by train and bike empowering.
But even in this time of climate emergency, public transport still remains an unpopular choice. It doesn’t take many strikes, cancellations, missed connections and rising ticket prices to avoid it altogether. When the average British person already spends around £ 3,500 a year on car costs, it’s no wonder we prefer the driver’s seat.
Yet, there are many reasons we should be using public transport more, with one being the bonus to the environment they bring. Recent research shows that UK trains have higher carbon savings than previously thought. For my Scottish journey, had I traveled a similar route from London to Edinburgh by car, my journey’s emissions would supposedly have increased 10-fold.
E-bike rental schemes have also increased across the UK, and so has cycling in general, but this mode of transport isn’t always planned for. All over the country, dedicated (专用的) bike lanes are way too rare.
All of this has revealed to me that while the UK’s transport infrastructure (基础设施) is poor, its potential is significant. We know how effective electrified rail routes can be in decarbonization, but in 2021-22 little more than a mile of such track was upgraded across Britain. Centrally funded investment could change things.
The rest of Europe seems to recognize this. If I were in Austria, I could travel across Vienna by public transport for €l a day. In Germany, I could organize a monthly €49 direct debit for all-inclusive regional public transport. Closer to home, Brighton and Hove have the most popular bus network outside London.
We must demand a nationalized low-carbon network, A standardized, centrally funded consistently supported ecosystem of public transport across the UK could truly change our carbon game.
24. What does the underlined word “empowering” in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Sparking debate. B. Causing confusion.
C. Giving strength or confidence. D. Leading to complaints and protests.
25. What is the problem with implementing e-bike rental schemes?
A. High rental fees. B. Potential safety problems.
C. Lack of public interest. D. Insufficient infrastructure
26. Why does the author mention Austria and Germany?
A. To compare the costs of public transport.
B. To predict the challenges of UK’s public transport.
C. To contrast with the state of UK’s public transportation.
D. To illustrate the popularity of public transport in Europe
27. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Transforming carbon game: The Eco-Boost on Rails.
B. Revolutionizing UK Transport: The Green Ride Ahead.
C. Empowering Global travelling: A Long March on Land.
D. Revolutionizing UK City Life: The Tech Leap on Tracks.
C 25. D 26. C 27. B

When public transport works, it really works.
根据第四段“All over the country, dedicated (专用的) bike lanes are way too rare. (在全国各地,专用的自行车道太少了。)”可知,实施电动自行车租赁计划存在的问题是基础设施不足。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The rest of Europe seems to recognize this. If I were in Austria, I could travel across Vienna by public transport for €1 a day. In Germany, I could organize a monthly €49 direct debit for all-inclusive regional public transport. Closer to home, Brighton and Hove have the most popular bus network outside London.

Record fires sweeping across the Amazon recently have been making the headlines as scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will worsen climate change crisis and endanger biodiversity.
As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is often called “the lungs of the world”. It is also home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million local people. The vast area of rainforest plays an important role in the world’s ecosystem because it absorbs heat instead of reflecting heat back into the atmosphere. It also stores carbon dioxide and produces oxygen, ensuring that less carbon is released, reducing the effects of climate change.
“Any forest destroyed is a danger to biodiversity and the people who use that biodiversity,” Thomas Lovejoy, an ecologist at George Mason University told National Geographic. “The great danger is that a lot of carbon goes into the atmosphere,” he stressed. “In the midst of the global climate crisis, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.
Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August a year ago. A total of 71,497 forest fires were registered in the country in the first 8 months of 2019, up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018, INPE said. “We estimate that the forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon have decreased something between 20 and 30 percent compared to the last 12 months,” Carlos Nobre, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo, told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Brazil owns about 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, whose degradation (恶化) could have severe consequences for global climate and rainfall. The extent of the area ruined by fires has yet to be determined, but the emergency has gone beyond Brazil’s borders.
28. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The great role of the Amazon rainforest.
B. The effects of consistent climate change.
C. The causes of the decreasing biodiversity.
D. The results of the Amazon rainforest fires.
29. What’s Thomas’s attitude towards biodiversity?
A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Optimistic. D. Ambiguous.
30. Why does the author mention the figures in the fourth paragraph?
A. To explain the process of the research.
B. To present the bad influence of forest fires.
C. To prove the great importance of the rainforest.
D. To show the urgency of protecting the rainforest.
31. What does the author want to tell us in the passage?
A. The dry weather leads to the rainforest fires.
B. The biodiversity makes the rainforest unique.
C. The rainforest fires result in serious consequences.
D. The global climate crisis brings more rainforest fires.
A 29. A 30. D 31. C

When middle school math teachers completed an online professional development (PD) program that uses artificial intelligence to improve their math knowledge and teaching skills, their students’ math performance improved.
This online professional development program relies on a virtual facilitator to present problems and provide feedback aiming to enhance teachers’ mastery of knowledge and skills required. It covers why mathematical rules and procedures work and focuses on helping students employ instructional tools and strategies to overcome common struggles.
An experiment was conducted in which 53 middle school math teachers were randomly assigned to either this Al-based professional development or no additional training. On average, teachers spent 11 hours to complete the program. We then gave 1,727 of their students a math test. While students of these two groups of teachers started off with no difference in their math performance, the students taught by teachers who completed the program increased their mathematics performance by 0.18 points on average. This is a statistically significant gain that is equal to the average math performance difference between sixth and seventh graders in the study.
Teachers often have limited access to high-quality PD programs to improve their knowledge and teaching skills. Time conflicts or living in rural areas that are far from in-person professional development programs can prevent teachers from receiving the support they need. Additionally, many existing in-person professional development programs for teachers have little impact on student achievement. AI-based PD programs include opportunities for teachers to observe teaching practices. Teachers also receive real-time support from the program facilitators. The Al-supported virtual facilitator acting as a human instructor gives teachers authentic teaching activities to work on, asks questions and provides real-time feedback and guidance.
Advancements in AI technologies will allow researchers to develop more interactive, personalized learning environments for teachers. More importantly, AI-based PD programs can collect rich, real-time interaction data, which help make programs more effective. Despite billions of dollars being spent each year on professional development for teachers, research suggests that how teachers learn through professional development is not yet well understood.
32. What was the goal of the online professional development program?
A. To create widely accessible methods B. To improve teachers’ teaching skills.
C. To solve students’ common problems. D. To analyze students’ math performance.
33. How did the students taught by the teachers of the AI-based PD program perform?
A. They exhibited statistically significant improvement.
B. They performed even better than the seventh graders.
C. They solved the math problem faster than the average.
D. They started with lower performance but ended higher.
34. How does the author highlight AI-based PD programs in paragraph 4?
A. By listing current shortcomings. B. By clarifying essential concepts.
C. By providing theoretical models. D. By comparing different trainings.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. There is a demand for larger investments in professional development.
B. AI technologies have helped us figure out how teachers learn in trainings.
C. The expected benefits of teacher training programs have yet to be realized.
D. It is a must for teachers to complete the professional development programs.
B 33. A 34. A 35. C

You’ re absorbed in a mystery novel, but in your excitement to discover who committed the crime, you turn the page too quickly and slice open the skin of your pointer finger. You take a deep breath, not because you’ve just learned that the head servant did it, but because the tiny cut hurts so badly. Why are paper cuts so painful? ___36___
First of all, human fingers carry a high concentration of nerve cells called nociceptors (伤害感受器) which respond to signals released by damaged cells. Paper cuts primarily set off nociceptors, which sense cell damage caused by pressure, cuts and small holes. Activated nociceptors let loose a chain of electrical signals that travel through nerve fibers. ___37___ Sometimes, paper cuts can also stimulate nociceptors that are sensitive to chemicals, such as the whitener (增白剂) used to lighten paper. An extra terrible feeling around a paper cut may be generated.
___38___ The paper itself also adds to the pain. Although it looks smooth to the naked eye, at a microscopic level, the dried wood fibers within paper make the materials’ edges quite rough. This rough texture causes more extensive cellular damage than a straight, clean edge would.
That said, paper’s rough edge typically only slices through the top two layers of skin — the outer skin layer and the inner skin layer. ___39___ This lowers the likelihood that the cut will become covered by thickened blood. As a result, the nerve fibers remain exposed to the environment for a prolonged period of time and shoot off pain signals whenever touched.
To treat a paper cut, clean the wound with soap and water, apply antibiotic ointment (抗生素软膏) to prevent infection, and cover it with a bandage to block out dirty stuff. ___40___ However, if the cut doesn’t improve in that time, you’d better see a doctor.
A. Therefore, it causes little to no bleeding.
B. It’s a combination of two different aspects.
C. Most paper cuts recover within two to three days.
D. Hands are flexible and packed with pain-sensitive cells.
E. This helps explain why slicing open your finger is also super painful.
F. But it’s not just the physical makeup that makes paper cuts so painful.
G. Ultimately, the signals reach a brain region responsible for sensations of pain.
B 37. G 38. F 39. A 40. C
根据上文“Why are paper cuts so painful? (为什么被纸划伤这么痛?)”及下文“First of all, human fingers carry a high concentration of nerve cells called nociceptors (首先,人类的手指携带着高浓度的被称为伤害感受器的神经细胞,它对受损细胞释放的信号做出反应。)” 而第三段“The paper itself also adds to the pain. (但并不仅仅是身体上的化妆让纸割伤如此痛苦)”也在解释原因之一,说明划线处要集中归纳“为什么被纸划伤这么痛?”,B 选项“It’s a combination of two different aspects. (这是两个不同方面的结合。)”符合逻辑。即文章从两方面解释了为什么被纸割伤的伤口会如此疼痛?故选B。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Activated nociceptors let loose a chain of electrical signals that travel through nerve fibers. (被激活的伤害感受器释放出一串电信号,通过神经纤维传播。)”可知,下文要进一步说明,这些被激活的信号接下来的传播路径,G选项 “Ultimately, the signals reach a brain region responsible for sensations of pain. (最终,这些信号到达大脑中负责疼痛感觉的区域。)”符合逻辑。故选G。
【38题详解】
根据下文“The paper itself also adds to the pain. (报纸本身也增加了痛苦。)”可知,划线处承接上文,并引起下文,F选项“But it’s not just the physical makeup that makes paper cuts so painful. (但并不仅仅是身体上的化妆让纸割伤如此痛苦。)”中not just 与下文also,形成上下承接关系,符合逻辑。故选F项。
【39题详解】
根据下文“This lowers the likelihood that the cut will become covered by thickened blood. (这降低了伤口被粘稠的血液覆盖的可能性。)”可知,上文要指出割伤并未出血或出血少,才能引出下文伤口不会被粘稠的血液覆盖的结果。A 选项“Therefore, it causes little to no bleeding. (因此,它几乎不会引起出血。)”符合逻辑。故选A。
根据下文“However, if the cut doesn’t improve in that time, you’d better see a doctor. (然而,如果伤口在这段时间内没有好转,你最好去看医生。)”可知,划线处要提出一种结果,引出下文,没有出现这种结果,采取怎么的措施。C选项“Most paper cuts recover within two to three days. (大多数被纸划伤的伤口会在两到三天内恢复。)”符合逻辑。故选C。

It is my pleasure to share an outing experience with you. On the past weekend, my family and I went on a hiking trip onto the Longma Mountain, which I considered enjoyable and refreshing.
With great excitement, we arose early in the morning and drove to the foot of the mountain. Starting our climbing, we were surrounded by the peaceful landscape, with the sounds of the birds brightening our spirits.
Every Saturday, Jason looked forward to going to Chinatown to shop for food because his mom let him pick his favorite snacks: roast pork and bubble tea.
The streets in Chinatown were crowded with cars and people. His mother could not find the same exotic (异国风情的) vegetables in the local supermarkets, so they always came here to shop. What fascinated Jason was tasty roast pork, even the whole pigs hanging on big hooks in the windows, their skins roasted to a glistening brown. Jason’s mouth would water just looking at them.
As they passed the newsstand carrying Chinese newspapers and magazines, Jason spotted an old man sitting on the sidewalk. His hair was long, white, and messy. The face beneath was wrinkled, dirty, and unshaven. Worn and torn clothing wrapped around his thin frame, and in this kind of cold weather, he even wore sandals (拖鞋), his feet blue with cold. He banged an empty can against the sidewalk, trying to draw attention from passersby. As Jason walked by, he could smell a musty odor (发霉的臭味) and covered his nose. The old man reached out and touched Jason’s left leg. Instinctively, Jason gathered all his strength to drag his leg away and kick the old man to the ground heavily. Frightened, he hurried to catch up with his mother without looking back.
“Mom, the old man touched me,” he cried, “He touched me with his dirty hands. It’s disgusting! And he smelled too.”
Jason’s mother glanced back at the man with a look of understanding and said gently, “Jason, he can’t help it. He’s homeless. He didn’t mean any harm.” Mom’s words made Jason look back at the old man with regret, who now was looking up at other passersby, still banging his can.
On their way home, Jason asked, his voice filled with concern. “Why is that old man homeless? Where does he sleep?”
“I don’t know. It’s tough to be homeless, especially in this cold weather. He did look quite weak,” his mother replied.
Mom’s words deepened Jason’s regret. He admitted his heavy kick to his mother, who reminded him that it was crucial to acknowledge his mistake and try to make up for it.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, with his mother’s help, Jason decided to do something. They drove to the familiar side street in Chinatown with several packages of necessities. The old man was still there, looking even skinnier than the day before. He glanced at Jason and seemed to recognize him. Jason opened his packages and handed the old man a pair of shoes and some clothes. He said gently to the man, “I hope they fit.” And then he took a package of roast pork from his mom. Eagerly slipping it to the old man’s hand, he said, “It’s also for you.”
Hearing this, the old man looked at them with watery eyes. He bowed deeply, whispering “Thank you!” in a trembling voice. Jason helped him put on the new shoes and clothes. Surprisingly, Jason didn’t think of the man as smelly but someone worthy of respect and care at this moment. When the old man was wolfing down the roast pork, his eyes misted over once again. “I’m sorry for that kick,” Jason apologized sincerely. Touched by the man’s gratitude, Jason understood that it was never too late to make up for a past mistake, no matter how late it might seem.

A The great role of the Amazon rainforest.

When middle school math teachers completed an online professional development (PD) program that uses artificial intelligence to improve their math knowledge and teaching skills, their students’ math performance improved.
This online professional development program relies on a virtual facilitator to present problems and provide feedback, aiming to enhance teachers’ mastery of knowledge and skills required.
33 How did the students taught by the teachers of the AI-based PD program perform?

A. Therefore it causes little to no bleeding.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
