Even wives don't worry so much over their husbands. W:Well, if we want to reach the age of our grandparents', we need to stay healthy. When I queue at the checkout behind some people, I am amazed at the unhealthy things they have in their baskets. No wonder they are overweight, unfit and always feeling ill. M:I think you have to keep a balance. I try to buy mostly healthy things, but I don't get stressed if I sometimes feel like something less healthy, like the bacon. W:Do you know what kind of dog you want? M:Yes, I've been looking at some pictures on the Internet. This one with the long golden hair is named Lion. W:He's very cute, but we don't have enough room for a dog that big. Those dogs need space to run around, and we live in an apartment. I think we should get a small one. At that stage I hadn't yet learned to climb or swim, but that is something I would also have loved to do. One day we had a physical education class at school. We did the long jump and handstands, but it was when I had to do a forward roll that disaster struck. Somehow, I twisted my neck in an extremely painful way. I screamed loudly and the teachers were very concerned. An ambulance was called and I was taken to hospital. The doctors fitted me with a collar and I was told to do no exercise and stay away from school for eight weeks. At first, I was very bored. Having to keep still all day was no fun. So I started to read. I looked at books on the shelf at home. I wasn't interested in love stories—I avoided those—but crime and adventure did appeal. From those eight weeks I developed a lifelong love of reading. When my collar was removed, the doctors told me not to exercise for another four weeks. Instead of being disappointed, I was happy to devote more time to my new love—reading. 17.What did the speaker enjoy as a young child? A.Running. B.Climbing. But the undeveloped film still inside turned out to be even more of a treasure. New owner Don Roccoforte had it developed and saw in it an attractive dark haired woman in her thirties with two young boys. He immediately determined to try to find out who they were. A few weeks later the California-based camera collector received the news that left him stunned. The woman was his wife Jaqueline's aunt in the picture taken around 50 years ago, and one of the boys, her cousin. The couple have now unraveled (揭开) the astonishing coincidence, which leads back to Mrs Roccoforte's native Lancashire, where many of her family still live. The camera was bought from a shop in Preston, England by Brownie, a friend of Mr Roccoforte, who knew of his interest in photography and thought it would be an unusual gift. Back in California, the contents of his new possession inspired Mr Roccoforte's curiosity. Recognizing the water in the background of the photo as a lake in Lancashire, he sent a copy to the local paper in Preston to see if any readers could help. Another relative recognized the group as Winnie Bamber, still living in the area at the age of 81, her son Tony, Mrs Roccoforte's cousin, and Tony's childhood friend, Mick Murphy. Yesterday Mrs Bamber was still gasping (惊讶地吸气) at the turn of events which has reunited two strands (分支) of her family. She said she remembered taking the boys to the lake and losing the camera. The two boys, both now 58, still live near Preston. Mrs Roccoforte's father is Winnie Bamber's brother, Billy Charnley. He and his wife moved to America in the 1960s. Their daughter met Mr Roccoforte there and they married and moved to Preston for two years before returning to America. 24.Which of the following is the right order of what happened? a.Don Roccoforte received a special present from his friend. b.Another relative recognized Winnie Bamber and the two boys. c.Winnie Bamber, together with two boys, went to take pictures at a lake. d.Don Roccoforte sent a copy of the picture to a paper in Preston. e.The film was developed. f.The camera was lost. g.Brownie bought an old camera in a shop. We often hear of the harm of social media to teens and young people, but our latest research on young girls and boys has revealed that social media is not always negative. In some cases, we found that social media can positively influence their health and well-being, by helping them learn about healthy eating or new workouts to try. Besides, social media provides space for young people to talk to each other about issues of health. For our study, conducted by researchers from the University of Birmingham and Orebro University, we invited over 1,300 young girls and boys, aged 13-18, from ten UK schools. We were interested in better understanding how young people use social media, and how they feel it impacts their health and well-being. To do this, we selected 84 participants from the main sample and had them take part in small group interviews. The results showed that social media often had a positive influence on young people's motivation for being physically active and on their ability to make conscious diet choices. Social media also allowed them to access the information they found inspirational, and learn about different apps they could use to be physically active or monitor their progress. They reported that likes, comments, and views on their social media posts also helped them stay motivated to exercise. Encouragingly, the young people we spoke to were also highly discerning__users of social media. They thought carefully about the content they were engaging with online. For instance, the teenagers reported that they would often ignore content that had the potential to lead to harm, such as images or videos that presented unrealistic workouts or expectations for their bodies. While the risks should certainly not be overlooked, our findings show that social media can have a positive effect on young people's health and well-being. A benefit of social media is that it provides real-time, low-cost information, and support from their peers. Making young people use social media safely, critically and responsibly may thus help them continue to lead a healthy life. 28.What is the main finding of the latest research mentioned in the text? The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people's wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use. Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.” “I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they've gone to bed.” “It's good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I'm enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.” There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide. Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark__on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. You might apologize while pushing your way through a crowd or using the last of the printer paper at work. It's easy to say “I'm sorry”, but true apologies are a different story. You may have trouble finding the right way to send meaningful apologies. Or you may wonder how to properly demand an apology if the other person is at fault? __36__ Apologize sincerely. __37__ It can even repair your reputation that you can be trusted. But your relationship will remain tense if your apology seems casual. So you have to be truly willing to apologize. Apply specific. A meaningful apology comes down to the three R's—regret, responsibility and remedy (补救方法). Firstly, communicate your regret. Show the other person you have recognized your error and can sense his or her pain. Then take complete responsibility. Don't excuse or blame the victim. __38__ Offer to make up for the harm you caused or promise you wouldn't repeat it again. Don't expect immediate forgiveness. Most people hope for immediate forgiveness while apologizing. But that may mean you don't respect the others' emotions and all you care about is yourself. So give them some time to come out of the pain after your apology. __39__ __40__ If you're the offended one, describe what's changed in the relationship and your true feeling. For example, you could say, “Although there's a disagreement between you and me, I want us to be friends again. But I've been hurt, and I'd like an apology. I need you to acknowledge what you've done.” A.Ask for an apology if necessary. B.Don't claim an apology if you're offended. C.However, they would refuse to apologize to you. D.A genuine apology can help repair your relationship. E.With the following tips, you'll find these are not hard. F.Lastly, show that you're working to improve the situation. G.After all, they were hurt and it would take them a while to recover. 39.G 根据前文“So give them ... your apology.”可知,此处应说明不要期待你的道歉能够立刻得到原谅,要给对方一些时间。G项(毕竟,他们受伤了,需要一段时间才能恢复。)符合文意。故选G。 40.A 根据后文“But I've been ... an apology.”可知,如果对方冒犯了你,你可以大方要求对方向你道歉。A项(如果必要的话,要求对方道歉。)符合文意。故选A。 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 The morning had been a disaster. Can't you see things from my point of view?” I shook my head and felt the __42__ in my tooth. It was really __43__. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. __44__, at about lunchtime, I got lucky. “If you __45__ right now,” the receptionist said, “the dentist will fit you in”. I rushed out to my car. But suddenly I began to __46__ about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to __47__ someone at such short notice? Why wasn't he as __48__ as the others? I didn't know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit back together again. Mom introduced me to our new neighbours, the Chens. Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she'd just started. Mr Chen was a famous craftsman (匠人) from China. Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before. After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was still hoping she'd meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground. “Benjamin,” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn't hear her come in. “What just broke?” she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma's bowl. “I can't believe you broke this,” she said. “Well, I can't believe we have to live here now! I can't believe I have to switch schools, and I can't believe you didn't even meet me after my first day.” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me. The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her. I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces, but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again. “I'm sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can't make a fresh start with broken things.” As I wandered down the hall, Mr Chen was emptying his garbage. “Are you sure you want to throw that out?” he asked. I brought the repaired bowl into her room. [精彩范文] “Are you sure you want to throw that out?” he asked. My throat twisted into a knot. “It's broken,” I murmured. “That's a simple repair. Come.” In their apartment, Mr Chen spread the broken pieces out like a jigsaw puzzle. After finding each match, he taught me to delicately rebuild the bowl, filling in the crack lines with a special paint. Finally, the bowl was together again. I held it gently in the palm of my hand and admired it for long. Slightly different, it was as beautiful as before. I couldn't wait to show it to Mom and rushed back home. I brought the repaired bowl into her room. Obviously, she was more than surprised to see the bowl again. “It's amazing,” she marveled, running her fingertip over the fixed cracks. “Mr Chen helped me mend it. He is a superb craftsman,” I said with a grin. “Definitely. After being repaired, it looks much stronger than before,” said Mom, smiling radiantly. I sat on the edge of her bed, and Mom reached out to me. Our hands joined with crisscrossed fingers. We both knew this was a new beginning. Text one, did you fall out of bed last night?
