NOVEMBER 25, 2024 TEENS JUNIOR 1|5
On Oct 27, the UN (联合国) gives 9 cities in China the name of “Biodiversity Charming City (生物多样性魅力城市)”. Each city has many different plants and animals, and each city takes good care of their environment (环境). Let’s look at some of them!
Beijing Beijing is one of the most biodiverse cities in the world. Some of its plants and animals, like butterflies, are very rare. Butterflies can’t live in bad environments. So seeing them means the environment is healthy. There are 24 kinds of butterflies in the center of Beijing.
Ninghe, Tianjin Ninghe is famous for its Qilihai ancient coast (七里海古海岸). Every November, about 500,000 birds fly there to have a break before flying on to warm places.
Shaoxing, Zhejiang Shaoxing has 4,781 different kinds of plants and animals. In April, people find a new kind of bird there: the forktailed drongo-cuckoo (叉尾鸟鹃). It is a pretty black bird, and sometimes you can see its blue tail under the sun.

17.What does the underlined word “rare” mean in the passage?

Feel sad? Hug a tree! These days, lots of young Chinese people are hugging trees to reduce stress (减压). It might sound strange, but there’s science behind it.
The “biophilia hypothesis” (亲生命假说) can explain it. An American scientist named Edward Wilson talked about it in 1984. He said humans love being around other living things from birth. Our love for nature is “in our DNA”. That’s why we like green nature views more than city views. It’s also why we love cute pets.
Some studies show how tree-hugging helps our health. In 2021, a study found that hugging trees can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone (荷尔蒙) that affects our feelings. The more oxytocin we have, the calmer and happier we feel. Just 21 seconds of tree-hugging can increase oxytocin.
There’s another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇). It shows how stressed we are. When we’re nervous, angry or very sad, our brain makes more cortisol. Hugging trees can reduce cortisol, and then we’ll feel better.
However, while tree-hugging is good for us, we must be careful not to harm nature. Trees are home to many small creatures that we can’t even see. So, when you hug a tree, be as gentle as you would be when hugging a friend!
21.What does the underlined word “it” refer to _________?
A.many young people like cute pets B.some people like cute pets
C.hugging trees can help reduce stress D.people like green nature views more
22.Which of the following best shows the “biophilia hypothesis”?
A.People like to live in big cities.
B.We feel happy when seeing a beautiful flower in the garden.
C.People like to decorate their rooms with plastic (塑料) plants.
D.People sometimes don’t like to go out and stay at home playing games.
23.How does tree-hugging help with our health?
A.By making a changing to DNA. B.By protecting us from illness.
C.By producing oxytocin in bodies. D.By helping us improving memories.
24.What is the right relationship between the hormone cortisol and our feelings?
A.We feel sadder with a lower level (低水平) of cortisol.
B.We feel angrier with a lower level of cortisol.
C.We feel more stressed with a higher level of cortiso
D.We feel much happier with a higher level of cortiso
25.What is the best title of his article?
A.Loving Nature: from city to forest B.Tree-hugging: more than a strange habit
C.Sports Time: away from trees D.City Life: the lack (缺少) of life

Feel sad?

A.By making a changing to DNA. B.By protecting us from illness.
