【原文】
M: Instagram is containing so many photos of food—now a pop-up diner in London is taking advantage of this new trend by letting people settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading photos of their dishes to social networks. I always thought people’s taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, but at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK, I’d probably do it too.
“The Picture House” is the world’s first pay-by-photo restaurant—you order, click a photo of the food, share on Instagram and eat for free! The restaurant came up with the idea to cash in on people’s addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found out that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range.
The pop-up diner was open in Soho, London for three days in May, and is now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don’t have to pay for, if they photo and Instagram it. The reaction to “The Picture House” has been great so far. And the pay-by-picture concept has proven to be an effective way. Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of business.

When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns.
In secondary school art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it. For the art standardized (标准化) exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so convincing that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being determined. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.
24.What did the author think of her drawing before the standardised exam?
A.Discouraging. B.Meaningless. C.Satisfying. D.Empowering.
25.In her 30s, the author ______.
A.avoided oil painting practice B.searched for a painting career
C.took oil painting seriously D.began water colours as a hobby
26.What attracted the author to oil paintings at last?
A.Her ambition. B.Her dream. C.Her grade. D.Her taboo.
27.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.It never rains but it pours.
C.Dreams are the reflections of realities. D.Strong will can move mountains.

C
Viruses — particularly RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 — constantly evolve (进化) by increasing new mutations (突变). Some of these changes are advantageous to the virus, allowing variants to escape host immunity and spread rapidly. By predicting how a virus will evolve, researchers could, in theory, design vaccines and antiviral treatments ahead of time.
In the past, researchers have conducted laboratory experiments to identify variants, but these are laborious and time-consuming. Some groups have developed experiments investigating how individual mutations affect a virus’s ability to escape detection by antibodies. These experiments can explain a large amount of viral evolution, but not all of it.
The arrival of AI-based protein-structure prediction tools — such as ESM-2 and ESMFold created by Meta (formerly Facebook) — has brought new energy to the field. AI tools require vast amounts of data to be able to predict viral evolution. The mass sequencing of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has made this possible, says Jumpei Ito, a bioinformatician at the University of Tokyo.
Ito’s group is focusing on the ability of variants to spread rapidly in a population, and eventually dominatc. The rescarchers used ESM-2 to create a model called CoVFit, which is trained on 13, 643SARS-CoV-2 variants and can predict the relative fitness of SARS-CoV-2 variants. Using CoVFit, the restricted model trained using variant data up to August 2022, Ito’s team found that it successfully predicted the improved fitness of certain variants after that cut-off — including XBB5, a novel variant that took hold later that year.
In theory viruses have almost infinite room to evolve, says Ito. For example, the Omicron variant arrived on the scene with more than 50 mutations, looking like nothing researchers had seen before. These sudden evolutionary leaps are hard to predict. David Robertson, a virologist, and his colleagues are trying to find ways of using AI models to better understand these vast evolutionary leaps and determine their limits. “It kind of feels like dark magic,” says Robertson. The goal, he says, is to be able to work out how much room there is for a virus to evolve after its detection in people.
28.Why do viruses increase new mutations?
A.To avoid being detected. B.To spread disease to hosts.
C.To help design treatments. D.To form numerous variants.
29.What may contribute to AI tools’ predictive power?
A.ESM-2 created by Meta. B.Laboratory experiments.
C.AI models’ great accuracy. D.Data provided by COVID-19.
30.What can we know about CoVFit?
A.It received training from ESM-2. B.It helped identify a novel virus.
C.It used data collected from 2022. D.It made some precise predictions.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Viruses can evolve into countless variants. B.Using AI models is limited and inadequate.
C.Studying viral evolution has a long way to go. D.Understanding viral mutations is a magic trick.
【答案】28.A 29.D 30.D 31.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了病毒不断进化增加新突变,AI工具可预测病毒进化,如CoVFit模型有一定预测能力,但研究病毒进化仍面临挑战。
28.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Viruses — particularly RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 — constantly evolve (进化) by increasing new mutations (突变). Some of these changes are advantageous to the virus, allowing variants to escape host immunity and spread rapidly. (病毒,特别是RNA病毒,如SARS-CoV-2,通过增加新的突变不断进化。这些变化中的一些对病毒是有利的,使变种能够逃脱宿主的免疫并迅速传播)”可知,病毒增加新突变是为了避免被宿主免疫系统检测到。故选A项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“AI tools require vast amounts of data to be able to predict viral evolution. The mass sequencing of SARS CoV 2, the virus that causes COVID 19, has made this possible, says Jumpei Ito, a bioinformatician at the University of Tokyo. (人工智能工具需要大量的数据才能预测病毒的进化。东京大学的生物信息学家伊藤纯平说,导致新冠肺炎的新冠病毒的大规模测序使这成为可能)”可知,由新冠病毒提供的数据有助于AI工具的预测能力。故选D项。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Using CoVFit, the restricted model trained using variant data up to August 2022, Ito’s team found that it successfully predicted the improved fitness of certain variants after that cut off — including XBB5, a novel variant that took hold later that year.(伊藤的团队使用CoVFit(一个使用截至2022年8月的变种数据训练的受限模型)发现,它成功预测了截止日期之后某些变种适应性的提高——包括XBB5,这是当年晚些时候出现的一种新变种)”可知,CoVFit做出了一些准确的预测。故选D项。
31.主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“In theory viruses have almost infinite room to evolve, says Ito.(伊藤说,理论上,病毒几乎有无限的进化空间)”和“These sudden evolutionary leaps are hard to predict. David Robertson, a virologist, and his colleagues are trying to find ways of using AI models to better understand these vast evolutionary leaps and determine their limits. (这些突然的进化飞跃很难预测。病毒学家大卫·罗伯逊和他的同事们正试图找到利用人工智能模型更好地理解这些巨大进化飞跃并确定其极限的方法)”可知,最后一段告诉我们,突然的进化仍很难预测,所以研究病毒进化还有很长的路要走。故选C项。
D
Over the past 300 years,1.5 billion hectares of forest have been lost, resulting in biodiversity loss, desertification, and increased flooding risks.
In the book Treewilding, ecologist Jake Robinson explains while the solution to forest clearing might appear straightforward — simply plant millions of trees — the reality is far more confusing. Random tree planting can threaten ecosystems and the livelihoods of local communities.
This engaging book mainly reveals how well-developed approaches are required — one that integrates the latest scientific advancements, for instance. Treewilding asks us to reflect on our interconnectedness with the woods, a realization that is perhaps the biggest “secret” to restoring nature.
Tree-planting initiatives have exploded since the turn of the century. Globally, the area of planted forests rose from 170 million hectares in 1990 to 293 million hectares in 2020. However, unless thoroughly researched and well organized, tree planting can backfire.
Often, only one type of tree is planted across pieces of land. This reduces biodiversity, in terms of plant species and the wildlife and microorganisms (微生物) associated with them. Because trees of the same species can all fall victim to the same diseases, a whole forest can be wiped out at once. Moreover, non-native trees can win out over local species, disturbing the local balanced ecosystems.
To solve environmental crises, Robinson advocates a more informed strategy. He speaks to Forrest Fleischman, a specialist in forest and environmental policy, who highlights how local people depend on forests for highly self-sufficient agricultural activities. Fleischman also proposes that locals know well what species are best suited to the environment and how these species are interconnected with the local wildlife and ecosystem.
The author also describes the concept of ecoacoustics (生态声学) . The approach uses the sounds made by organisms including birds and bats to explore the composition of and changes in ecosystems. Working with ecoacoustics specialist Carlos Abrahams, Robinson concludes that as forests are recovered, the number of animals hidden in the soil increases, producing an “underground soundscape — a hidden symphony of life”.
Robinson ultimately emphasizes natural regeneration — just as a phoenix (a mythical bird) is reborn from its own ashes, a damaged forest can regenerate itself.
32.What is the main focus of Jake Robinson’s Treewilding?
A.The importance of technology in modern agriculture.
B.The changes of global forests over the past 300 years.
C.Major benefits of maintaining healthy ecosystems.
D.Effective methods in solving the loss of forests.
33.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “backfire” in paragraph 4?
A.Lead to negative outcomes. B.Produce predictable results.
C.Facilitate relevant initiatives. D.Encourage sustainable growth.
34.What might Fleischman expect tree-planting organizers to do?
A.Increase the number of non-native species.
B.Standardize planting practices across different regions.
C.Take account of natives’ knowledge in planting processes.
D.Encourage locals to adopt advanced agricultural methods.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Forest Clearing Poses a Serious Threat to Us
B.Repairing Forests Is More Than Just Planting Trees
C.Natural Regeneration Is the Key to Ecosystem Restoration
D.The Underground Soundscape Allows Us to Know Nature Better
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.C 35.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章文章介绍了随机植树的潜在问题,强调了科学植树的重要性,并探讨了生态声学及自然再生在森林恢复中的作用。
32.细节理解题。根据第二段“In the book Treewilding, ecologist Jake Robinson explains while the solution to forest clearing might appear straightforward — simply plant millions of trees — the reality is far more confusing. Random tree planting can threaten ecosystems and the livelihoods of local communities.(在《Treewilding》一书中,生态学家杰克·罗宾逊解释说,虽然解决森林砍伐问题的方法似乎很简单——只需种植数百万棵树——但现实要复杂得多。
根据划线词所在句“However, unless thoroughly researched and well organized, tree planting can backfire.(然而,除非进行彻底的调查和组织,否则植树可能会……)”和下文“Often, only one type of tree is planted across pieces of land. This reduces biodiversity, in terms of plant species and the wildlife and microorganisms (微生物) associated with them. Because trees of the same species can all fall victim to the same diseases, a whole forest can be wiped out at once. Moreover, non native trees can win out over local species, disturbing the local balanced ecosystems.(通常,在一片片土地上只种植一种树。这会减少生物多样性,包括植物物种以及与之相关的野生动物和微生物。因为同一物种的树木都可能成为同一种疾病的受害者,整个森林可能会一下子被摧毁。此外,外来树木可能会胜过本地物种,扰乱当地的生态平衡)”中对随意植树带来的不良后果的介绍可推知,如果没有经过彻底的调查和组织就随意植树,植树就会“导致负面的结果”,所以backfire与意思一致A项“Lead to negative outcomes.”。故选A项。
34.推理判断题。根据第六段中“He speaks to Forrest Fleischman, a specialist in forest and environmental policy, who highlights how local people depend on forests for highly self sufficient agricultural activities. Fleischman also proposes that locals know well what species are best suited to the environment and how these species are interconnected with the local wildlife and ecosystem.(他与森林和环境政策专家福雷斯特·弗莱施曼交谈,弗莱施曼强调了当地人如何依靠森林进行高度自给自足的农业活动。弗莱施曼还提出,当地人很清楚哪些物种最适合当地环境,以及这些物种与当地野生动物和生态系统是如何相互关联的)”可知,弗莱施曼认为当地人很清楚哪些物种最适合当地环境,以及这些物种与当地野生动物和生态系统是如何相互关联的,由此推知,他会希望植树组织者在植树过程中考虑当地人的知识。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“In the book Treewilding, ecologist Jake Robinson explains while the solution to forest clearing might appear straightforward — simply plant millions of trees — the reality is far more confusing. Random tree planting can threaten ecosystems and the livelihoods of local communities.(在《Treewilding》一书中,生态学家杰克·罗宾逊解释说,虽然解决森林砍伐问题的方法似乎很简单——只需种植数百万棵树——但现实要复杂得多。随意植树会威胁生态系统和当地社区的生计)”以及后面提到植树要考虑科学成果、当地人的知识、采用生态声学等多种因素来解决森林问题,而不只是单纯种树。所以“Repairing Forests Is More Than Just Planting Trees(修复森林不仅仅是种树)”能概括文章主旨,最适合做文章标题。故选B项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As the UK prepares for cold winds and snow, it’s time to dig out the winter wardrobe. But while we’re putting on warm clothes, 36 British brand Joules has teamed up with cleaning expert Sarah Dempsey to dish out some top tips on coat care.
Surprisingly, a study by Joules found that 20 per cent of Brits only give their coats a wash once annually. 37 Sarah isn’t shocked though; she knows coat cleaning can be tricky.
38 We should consider the material, colour, fibre content, how frequently we wear it and how it’s been stored since it was last worn. As we tend to wear layers in the winter and our coats are the outermost layer, they will be affected by the weather, getting wet in the rain, and picking up pollutants and dirt through wear over the season.
39 For wool coats, Sarah suggests one cleaning session per season, which can be done when you bring your coat out for winter. She explains, “Wool is described as a self-cleaning material as it contains keratin (角蛋白), which kills odour-causing bacteria. If your wool coat gets wet, make sure to air dry it thoroughly or it will end up smelling musty.”
Leather coats, on the other hand, may require two cleanings each season and a wipe-down between professional cleans. Leather can easily be damaged by a build-up of dirt and pollutants, so it needs to be cleaned more regularly. 40 According to Sarah, for best grade leather, a simple wipe down with a cloth and some detergent (洗涤剂) should be enough.
A.She suggests dividing it into several steps.
B.She advises that it depend on several factors.
C.what methods can we use to clean these warmers?
D.how often should we be washing these winter warmers?
E.The type of leather can also affect how you clean your coat.
F.Even more shocking, 17 per cent admit they never wash their coats at all.
G.When it comes to cleaning your coat, the frequency will depend on the fabric.

40.上文“Leather can easily be damaged by a build up of dirt and pollutants, so it needs to be cleaned more regularly.(皮革很容易因污垢和污染物的积累而受损,所以需要更频繁地清洗)”在讲皮外套的清洗情况,下文“According to Sarah, for best grade leather, a simple wipe down with a cloth and some detergent (洗涤剂) should be enough.(据Sarah说,对于顶级皮革,用一块布和一些洗涤剂简单擦拭就足够了)”具体说明顶级皮革的清洗方法,E选项“The type of leather can also affect how you clean your coat.(皮革的类型也会影响你清洗外套的方式)”承上启下,引出不同类型皮革清洗方式不同这一内容。故选E项。

My friend Mareya exclaimed with excitement on the phone, “Guess what! I just found out my family will get to Hawaii!” Without a pause, she kept talking about scuba diving, sandcastles, shave ice... I said, “I’m supposed to go with Ollie and her grandmother on a snowshoeing hike in the mountains on Saturday. On our way back, we’ll visit my aunt Jen and stay overnight at her farm.” “That’s perfect!” said Mareya. “I’ll send you pictures of palm trees and ocean, and you send me pictures of snowy trails and goats!”
But when I got off the phone, I had an unusual feeling in my stomach. I was happy for Mareya, but also a little envious of her exciting vacation.
Having collected myself, I decided to go over to Ollie’s and found out what I needed to pack for our hiking trip. I was about to set out when Ollie came, a mixed expression worn on her face. Before I could say something, she told me that her uncle in Mexico just got an extremely good deal on a beach house and the beach-house bargain was a now-or-never thing, so a bunch of her relatives were going to go in on it together. She tried to explain it in a pitiful tone, “I am heading down there tomorrow. We’re going to have to do our snowshoeing trip another time. I’m really sorry. But you understand, right?”
“Oh, sure,” I said. “Of course, yeah, no problem. Have fun!” I tried my best to push the corners of my mouth into a smile, but inside, my heart was sinking. The rest of the day, I dragged around the house like the grumpiest (暴脾气的) little grumpster in Grump Land. Finally, my mom handed me some clippers and asked me to run them over to Mrs. Nishikawa who needed these for her garden cleanup.
When I got to Mrs. Nishikawa’s house, she was busy taking care of her big, overgrown garden, out of breath, complaining once rainy San Francisco turning into a dry winter. Seeing the hose (软管) lying beside, I offered to help her water the plants.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To be honest, I thought helping her might take my mind off the unhappy thoughts.

Spotting the mess, Mrs. Nishikawa asked what was wrong with me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
To be honest, I thought helping her might take my mind off the unhappy thoughts. Hearing my voluntary assistance, Mrs Nishikawa beamed a relieved smile, handed me the hose and directed me how to water the plant. “Give a nice long drink to the plant which is desperate for water.” I responded with a silent nod. It felt good to be a helper, but I still couldn’t stop wishing that I were the one who would be going on vacation instead of being doomed to the same old sameness forever, without any surprise. Lost in deep thought, I held the hose motionlessly, rooted to the ground. Time passed. Before I could realize what happened, mud mixed with water spilt everywhere, the root of the plant exposing outside.
Spotting the mess, Mrs Nishikawa asked what was wrong with me. The instant I felt her concern, my tears couldn’t be held back, rolling down my checks. I laid down the hose, made a sincere apology, and poured out my miserable and envious feelings. On hearing what I said, Mrs Nishikawa gently patted me on the shoulder, comforting me with patience, “It’s normal to feel like this.” She continued, “No matter if it’s plants or thoughts, we have to pay attention to what we’re watering. If we nourish negative thoughts, unhappiness will grow.” Suddenly, it dawned on me that it is feeding our mind with positive thoughts that ensures flowers of happiness in full bloom. It is a reminder of staying optimistic whenever internal imbalance arises.

第二节 (满分25分)
