The Indian photographer Gauri Gill has been declared the winner of the 10th cycle of the Prix Pictet, the global award for photography and sustainability, receiving the prize of 100,000 Swiss Franes. Gauri Gill was selected from a shortlist of 12 photographers.
Gill’s work emphasizes her belief in working with and through community, in what she calls “active listening”. For more than two decades, she has been engaged closely with disadvantaged communities in the desert of western Rajasthan, and for the last decade with Indigenous artists in Maharashtra.
“On my many visits to rural Rajasthan, I have witnessed a complex reality I knew nothing about as an urban resident. To live poor and landless in the desert amounts to an inescapable reliance on oneself, on each other, and on nature. These pieces of shared experience now inhabit a large photographic series called ‘Notes from the Desert’,” said Gauri Gill.
First launched in 2008, the Prix Pictet photography award aims to highlight issues of work on themes connected to sustainability. Each of its 10 editions has focused on a different aspect of sustainability and this year’s competition was themed “Human”. The theme provides a platform to explore the complexities, weaknesses, and strengths of the human condition. It allows the artists to communicate the stories, struggles, and achievements of individuals and communities around the globe.
“Through this theme, the Prix Pictet aims to foster (促进) a deeper understanding of our shared humanity and inspire meaningful conversations about the issues that impact us all. Especially when thinking about the theme ‘Human’, I strongly believe that instead of the future of photography, we should think about photography for the future. The power of the image lies in its ability to draw people’s attention to critical and urgent environmental issues in a visually impactful yet direct way, said lsabelle von Ribbentrop, Executive Director of the Prix Pictet.
4. What contributes to Gauri Gill’s award-winning works?
A. Funding the disadvantaged. B. Avoiding interaction with artists.
C. Shooting the desert scenery. D. Cooperating with the locals.
5. What does Gauri Gill’s Notes from the Desert stress?
A Unfamiliarity with rural life. B. Protection of natural habitats.
C. Complexity of the landless world. D. Interdependence for survival.
6. What is the main purpose of the Prix Pictet photography award?
A. To honor famous photographers. B. To raise concern about sustainability.
C. To promote cutting-edge techniques. D. To analyze complicated human conditions.
7. Which statement will Isabelle von Ribbentrop most probably agree with?
A. We should adapt to environment. B. Photography should serve tomorrow.
C. We should prioritize individual achievements. D. Photography is art combined with technology.
D 5. D 6. B 7. B

Creativity is hard to define and perhaps even more difficult to measure, but scientists think they’ve come up with a remarkably simple way of assessing at least one aspect of it. The new method, called the Divergent Association Task (DAT), asks people to name 10 nouns that are as far apart in meaning as possible. “Cat” and “book” would be more divergent than “cat” and “dog”, for example. A computer algorithm then measures the semantic (语义的) distance — how much the two words have to do with each other-between the nouns the person came up with. Based on an analysis of responses from 8,914 volunteers, DAT is at least as good as current methods for predicting creativity in a person.
The AUT, (Alternative Uses Task, where you think of as many uses as possible for an object) and the BAGT, (Bridge-the-Associative Gap Task, where you try and link two words with a third word) are the two existing measures of creativity that DAT goes up against. The creativity scores from DAT correlated well with the scores from the two existing measures. What’s more, the data show that its effectiveness seems to apply across different people groups, making it suitable for large-scale surveys.
The key benefits of the new DAT test are that it’s simple and quick to complete, and doesn’t require any kind of human assessment, which might introduce bias (偏见). However, the researchers are keen to point out that it doesn’t measure every aspect of creativity.
“Our test measures only a sliver of one type of creativity,” said psychologist Jay Olson, from Harvard University. “But it enables creativity assessments across larger and more diverse samples with less bias, which will ultimately help us better understand this fundamental human ability. The more we understand it, the better we can foster it in all its forms.”
8. What does the underlined word “divergent” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Distant. B. Related. C. Accurate. D. Plain.
9. How does the author clarify the AUT and the BAGT?
A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing data.
C. By offering definitions. D. By making comparisons.
10. What is an advantage of the DAT?
A. It reduces potential bias. B. It features detailed results.
C. It measures overall creativity. D. It targets certain people groups.
11. According to Jay Olson, what is a possible result of using the DAT?
A. Replacing the AUT and the BAGT. B. Strengthening the importance of testing.
C. Deepening the understanding of creativity. D. Sharpening communication skills.
A 9. C 10. A 11. C

根据第二段“The AUT, (Alternative Uses Task, where you think of as many uses as possible for an object) and the BAGT, (Bridge-the-Associative Gap Task, where you try and link two words with a third word) are the two existing measures of creativity that DAT goes up against.(AUT (Alternative Uses Task,让你尽可能多地想出一个物体的用途)和BAGT (bridging - The - associative Gap Task,让你试着把两个单词和第三个单词联系起来)是DAT所反对的两个现有的创造力测试)”可知,作者提供定义澄清AUT和BAGT。
根据倒数第二段“The key benefits of the new DAT test are that it’s simple and quick to complete, and doesn’t require any kind of human assessment, which might introduce bias (偏见).(新的DAT测试的主要优点是它简单而快速地完成,并且不需要任何可能引入偏见的人工评估)”可知,DAT的优势是减少了潜在的偏见。故选A。
根据最后一段““Our test measures only a sliver of one type of creativity,” said psychologist Jay Olson, from Harvard University. “But it enables creativity assessments across larger and more diverse samples with less bias, which will ultimately help us better understand this fundamental human ability. The more we understand it, the better we can foster it in all its forms.”(哈佛大学的心理学家杰伊·奥尔森说:“我们的测试只测量了一种创造力的一小部分。但它可以在更大、更多样化的样本中以更少的偏见进行创造力评估,这最终将帮助我们更好地理解人类的这种基本能力。”我们对它了解得越多,我们就越能更好地培养它的各种形式。”)”可知,根据Jay Olson的说法,使用DAT可能会加深对创造力的理解。故选C。

Before she goes to bed each night, Li Juan logs on to DeepSeek for “therapy (疗法) sessions”. Ever since January, when the breakout Chinese AI app launched, the 28-year-old has brought her dilemmas and sorrows, including the recent death of her grandmother, to the chatbot as a therapy. Its responses at times brought her to tears. “DeepSeek has been such an amazing counselor (咨询师). It has helped me look at things from different perspectives and does a better job than the paid counselling services I have tried," says Li Juan.
From writing reports and Excel formulas to planning trips, workouts and learning new skills, AI apps have found their way into many people’s lives across the world. In China, though, young people like Li Juan have been looking to AI for something not typically expected of computing and algorithms — emotional support. For users like Li Juan, DeepSeek isn’t just a tool; it’s a source of comfort in uncertain times.
DeepSeek is available 24/7 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), allowing users to seek emotional support whenever they need it. This is particularly important for those experiencing sudden emotional depression or who may not have access to traditional therapy during off-hours. And the anonymity (匿名) and privacy offered by the app make it easier for them to share their thoughts and emotions without hesitation.
DeepSeek is a generative AI tool — similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini — trained on massive amounts of information to recognize patterns. This allows it to predict things like people’s shopping habits, create new content in text and images, and also carry on conversations like a person. What’s more, it lets users see its “thought process” before delivering a response because it offers something unique: its AI model, R1.
DeepSeek R1 is designed to interpret emotional clues from user interactions, including tone of voice, language patterns, behavior indicators and contextual understanding. The ability to detect emotions marks a significant advancement in AI assistants, enabling more empathetic and personalized interactions that adapt to users’ emotional needs.
12. What does DeepSeek mean to Li Juan?
A. An online teammate. B. An emotional comfort.
C. An academic guide. D. A decision maker.
13. What sets DeepSeek apart from other Al apps according to the text?
A. 24/7 availability. B. Massive data training.
C. A wide range of applications. D. Thinking process visualization.
14. Which aspect of DeepSeek R1 does the last paragraph cover?
A. Its limitations. B. Its operating environment.
C. Its significance. D. Its theoretical foundation.
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. DeepSeek: The Rise of Chinese AI App B. How Young Chinese Find Therapy in AI
C How AI Shapes the Consulting Industry D. DeepSeek: The Future of AI Technology
B 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据文章第一段“Ever since January, when the breakout Chinese AI app launched, the 28-year-old has brought her dilemmas and sorrows, including the recent death of her grandmother, to the chatbot as a therapy. Its responses at times brought her to tears. “DeepSeek has been such an amazing counselor (咨询师). It has helped me look at things from different perspectives and does a better job than the paid counselling services I have tried," says Li Juan.(自今年1月这款在中国大火的人工智能应用程序推出以来,这位28岁的姑娘就把自己的各种困扰和悲伤情绪倾诉给了这个聊天机器人,把它当作一种治疗方式,其中就包括她最近遭遇的祖母去世一事。它给出的回复有时让她感动得落泪。李娟说:“DeepSeek真是一位超棒的咨询师。它帮助我从不同角度看待问题,比我试过的那些付费咨询服务做得还要好。”)”以及第二段“For users like Li Juan, DeepSeek isn’t just a tool; it’s a source of comfort in uncertain times.(对于像李娟这样的用户来说,DeepSeek不只是一个工具,它还是在充满不确定性的时期里给予他们慰藉的来源。)”可知,李娟会把自己的困境和悲伤,比如祖母的去世,向 DeepSeek倾诉来作为一种治疗方式,DeepSeek帮助她从不同角度看待问题,对她来说,DeepSeek 是在不确定时期的一种安慰,是能给予她情感慰藉的存在。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“What’s more, it lets users see its “thought process” before delivering a response because it offers something unique: its AI model, R1.(此外,它还能让用户在它给出回复之前看到其“思考过程”,因为它提供了一项独特的功能:其人工智能模型R1。)”

根据文章最后一段“DeepSeek R1 is designed to interpret emotional clues from user interactions, including tone of voice, language patterns, behavior indicators and contextual understanding. The ability to detect emotions marks a significant advancement in AI assistants, enabling more empathetic and personalized interactions that adapt to users’ emotional needs.( DeepSeek R1旨在从用户的互动中解读情感线索,包括语气、语言模式、行为指标以及对上下文的理解。
How to study intensely without getting burned out?
I’ve done a number of intensive learning projects, sometimes studying for up to twelve hours a day. The risk of working too hard and crashing is always present during projects of this intensity. ____16____. Here are some tips for staying focused without burning out.
●Clearly Separate Studying from Life. The worst situation is to be in a state of constant semi-studying (半学习). This happens when people don’t have fixed studying schedules and instead feel like they should “always” be studying. Since always studying is impossible, people secretly add non-studying activities — like playing on their phone or watching television-into their learning time. ____17____, they feel like they have to study more hours. The end result is burnout. One strategy is to have a clear separation between the hours you’re studying and the hours you’re not.
●Adjust to the Sweet Spot of 85% Success. We learn best when our success rate is around 85%. If we fail consistently, not only do we get frustrated, we learn less. There are plenty of ways you can adjust your success rate. One is to make the task easier. ____18____, switch to doing them open-book. If you are struggling to memorize something, make a mnemonic It’s much easier to maintain motivation throughout your studies if you can get to a smooth rate of successful trials.
●Never Cut Sleep. Late-night cramming (临时死记硬背) is a student favorite. But it’s worst possible strategy you can employ when learning. Sleep plays a crucial role in memory. Cutting sleep while studying is like throwing away your running shoes right before a race. ____19____.
●Work out regularly. ____20____. While cutting exercise in a short-term manner is sometimes unavoidable, maintaining good exercise habits is among the few things that reliably improve cognitive functioning. Surprisingly, physical training, not “brain training” games you play on your phone, may be the only kind of brain training that actually works.
A. Then, when they are unproductive
B. If you’re failing to do problem sets
C. Exercise is another learning booster
D. Thus, I’ve discovered some strategies for preventing burnout
E. Even though the journey to weight loss is often filled with obstacles
F. Think deeply about what you have learned and form your own habits
G. You might think the extra studying time will help, but it only hurts you
D 17. A 18. B 19. G 20. C
根据上文“I’ve done a number of intensive learning projects, sometimes studying for up to twelve hours a day. The risk of working too hard and crashing is always present during projects of this intensity.(我做过很多强化学习项目,有时一天学习长达12个小时。在这种强度的项目中,工作过度和崩溃的风险总是存在的)”推知,作者通过自己的精力发现了一些长时间学习且不容易倦怠的方法,以引出后文的策略。故D选项“因此,我发现了一些防止倦怠的策略”符合语境,故选D。
【17题详解】
根据后文“they feel like they have to study more hours. The end result is burnout. One strategy is to have a clear separation between the hours you’re studying and the hours you’re not.(他们觉得他们必须学习更多的时间。最终的结果就是精疲力竭。一个策略是在你学习的时间和不学习的时间之间有一个明确的界限)”可知,觉得自己必须多花时间学习的情况应是发生在学习效果不佳的时候。故A选项“然后,当他们没有生产力的时候”符合语境,故选A。
【18题详解】
根据后文“switch to doing them open-book. If you are struggling to memorize something, make a mnemonic (助记符号). It’s much easier to maintain motivation throughout your studies if you can get to a smooth rate of successful trials.(换成开卷做。如果你很难记住什么东西,那就做一个助记器。如果你能顺利地获得成功,那么在整个学习过程中保持动力就会容易得多)”可知,后文提到要开卷做,说明是无法完成作业的情况。故B选项“如果你没有完成作业”符合语境,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据上文“●Never Cut Sleep. Late-night cramming (临时死记硬背) is a student favorite. But it’s worst possible strategy you can employ when learning. Sleep plays a crucial role in memory. Cutting sleep while studying is like throwing away your running shoes right before a race.(●不要减少睡眠时间。深夜死记硬背是学生的最爱。但这是你学习时最糟糕的策略。睡眠对记忆起着至关重要的作用。学习时减少睡眠就像在比赛前扔掉跑鞋一样)”可知,上文提到学习时减少睡眠对学习有害,推测本句主要说明原因。故G选项“你可能认为额外的学习时间会有帮助,但它只会伤害你”符合语境,故选G。
【20题详解】
根据上文“●Work out regularly.(●定期锻炼)”以及后文“While cutting exercise in a short-term manner is sometimes unavoidable, maintaining good exercise habits is among the few things that reliably improve cognitive functioning. Surprisingly, physical training, not “brain training” games you play on your phone, may be the only kind of brain training that actually works.(虽然在短期内减少锻炼有时是不可避免的,但保持良好的锻炼习惯是少数几件能可靠地提高认知功能的事情之一。令人惊讶的是,体育训练,而不是你在手机上玩的“大脑训练”游戏,可能是唯一一种真正有效的大脑训练)”可知,本段主要说明了运动对学习的好处。故C选项“运动是另一个学习助推器”符合语境,故选C。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the vast and stony deserts of eastern California, adventure and danger often go hand in hand. For Kevin with a thirst for exploration, this region was perfect. Since college, Kevin had crossed nearly every inch of the United States in search of thrills. For the last few years he had worked as a remote data analyst while traveling. Among his favorite spots was the town of Benton, where he had made a friend named Josh. Josh, a 38-year-old rock climber, had become a brother figure to Kevin. Josh taught Kevin rock climbing skills and showed him where to find the best crystals (水晶) in the mountains. Their friendship was shaped in the spirit of exploration, and together, they sought out the most remote and thrilling locations.
One December morning, Kevin returned to Benton with an exciting discovery — a perfect spot, where they could find unique crystals and minerals. Despite the cold weather, Josh decided to join Kevin. They set off across the desert, Kevin carrying most of the equipment — scrapers (铲子), pickaxes(鹤嘴镐), and other tools. After an exhausting hike through sandy streams and over boulders (巨石), they reached a rocky hillside with “cool rocks” buried just in front of a pair of enormous boulders.
For nearly two hours, the friends dug enthusiastically, uncovering rocks of all shapes and sizes. Around 3 p.m., Josh stepped aside to rest. Kevin continued to work in the hole they had dug, using a small scraper. Suddenly, Josh yelled, “Look out, Kevin!” Kevin turned back. And in that instant, the boulder rolled toward him, crashing his legs into the sand. His mind went into shock, and he wondered if this was how he would die. Josh grabbed a pickax and squeezed it between the boulder and the ground to prevent it from rolling further. With all his efforts, Josh managed to push the rock slightly. It was enough for Kevin to pull out his left leg, which was numb and severely injured, but his right leg remained trapped.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

At around 8 p.m., after five hours of calling 911, the first pair of rescuers arrived on foot.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Josh, an experienced climber, knew the emergency of the situation. He quickly assessed Kevin’s condition, realizing that every second counted. He tore strips from his shirt to create a cloth bandage, applying it just above the knee to control any potential bleeding. Meanwhile, he knew they needed professional and fast help. He climbed to a higher point. Luckily, his cellphone had a signal and he called 911, giving their exact location. The operator assured him that help was on the way, but Josh knew it would take time to reach them in such a remote area.
At around 8 p.m., after five hours of calling 911, the first pair of rescuers arrived on foot. With another pair finally making their way to the spot, the rescuers immediately began working to free Kevin. They carefully used specialized equipment to lift the massive boulder, finally releasing his trapped leg. Kevin was airlifted to the nearest hospital, where he received emergency medical treatment. After several hours of surgery and months of recovery, he began to heal. He was grateful to those who saved him. Now he knew he wanted to give back and this would be a kind of purpose in his life besides searching for adventure and thrill.

A. Unfamiliarity with rural life. B. Protection of natural habitats.
C. Complexity of the landless world. D. Interdependence for survival.
6. What is the main purpose of the Prix Pictet photography award?
A. To honor famous photographers. B. To raise concern about sustainability.

“Our test measures only a sliver of one type of creativity” said psychologist Jay Olson, from Harvard University.

C Exercise is another learning booster
D. Thus, I’ve discovered some strategies for preventing burnout
E. Even though the journey to weight loss is often filled with obstacles
F. Think deeply about what you have learned and form your own habits
G. You might think the extra studying time will help, but it only hurts you

For nearly two hours the friends dug enthusiastically, uncovering rocks of all shapes and sizes.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
