Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theater, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theater’s 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the building’s end.
The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say good-bye to the old building. Theater owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed proper. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.
Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theater’s location (位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the center of town,” he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”
Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were given up because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theater is located.
The theater audience said good-bye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theater has shown its last movie. The theater will be missed.
24. In what way was yesterday’s cleanup at the Plaza special?
A. It made room for new equipment.
B. It signaled the closedown of the theater.
C. It was done with the help of the audience.
D. It marked the 75th anniversary of the theater.
25. Why was The Last Picture Show put on?
A. It was an all-time classic.
B. It was about the history of the town.
C. The audience requested it.
D. The theater owner found it suitable.
26. What will probably happen to the building?
A. It will be repaired.
B. It will be turned into a museum.
C. It will be knocked down.
D. It will be sold to the city government.
27. What can we infer about the audience?
A. They are disappointed with Bradford.
B. They are sad to say goodbye to the old theater.
C. They are supportive of the city officials.
D. They are keen to have a shopping center.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. B

Robots can be programmed to move a car and even perform some operations. However, when it comes to picking up something that they have not touched before, such as an egg, they often fail. Now, engineers have invented an artificial fingertip (指尖) which breaks that limitation. It enables machines to sense objects as a human fingertip does.
Engineers have been working hard to make robots flexible and sensitive. When researchers from a university began designing an artificial fingertip in 2009, they used human skin as a guide. Their first fingertip was about the size of a coke can. By 2018, 3D printing made it about the size of an adult's big toe, with the multi-layered structure like human skin.
The latest breakthrough is called TacTip. Scientists include artificial nerve networks into the fingertip, which enables a robot to quickly process what it's sensing and act accordingly like a real finger.
“A lot of our sense of touch is decided by our skin,” says professor Benjamin, leader of the research team. In our fingertips, nerve endings will deform when the skin touches an object and then sends the signals to the brain about what's happening. Similarly, the nerve networks of TacTip pick up and translate those signals into the fingertip's actions, telling robots to handle objects of all shapes and sizes without programming, according to Benjamin.
Some scientists doubt whether TacTip is only just skin-like. The signals from the artificial and human fingertips are not quite the same, as the signals in real skin are more intense. Other scientists think highly of this breakthrough. “At least it helps clarify how human touch works and is a necessary step to improve robotic touch,”says professor Smith, a material scientist.
28. Why does the writer mention“an egg”in Paragraph 1?
A. To find a solution for engineers.
B. To show robots have limitations.
C. To tell how robots sense objects.
D. To explain why robots often fail.
29. Which of the following plays the most important role in the latest breakthrough?
A. Artificial nerve networks.
B. 3D printing.
C. Multi-layered structure.
D. Human skin.
30. What does the underlined word“deform” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Develop.
B. Stop working.
C. Decrease.
D. Change shapes.
31. Which is the best title for the text?
A. TacTip Changes How Touch Works in Humans
B. Robots Have Become More Flexible and Sensitive
C. Artificial Fingertip Gives Robots Human-like Touch
D. Engineers Have Achieved a Breakthrough in 3D Printing
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍人工指尖给机器人带来了人类般的触感。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第一段“Robots can be programmed to move a car and even perform some operations. However, when it comes to picking up something that they have not touched before, such as an egg, they often fail. Now, engineers have invented an artificial fingertip which breaks that limitation. (机器人可以编程来移动汽车,甚至执行一些操作。然而,当要捡起他们以前从未碰过的东西时,比如鸡蛋,他们往往会失败。现在,工程师们发明了一种人工指尖,打破了这一限制。)”可知,作者举例鸡蛋的目的就是为了说明机器人的一些局限。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段“The latest breakthrough is called TacTip. Scientists include artificial nerve networks into the fingertip, which enables a robot to quickly process what it's sensing and react accordingly like a real finger.(最新的突破被称为TacTip。科学家将人工神经网络植入指尖,使机器人能够快速处理感测到的信息,并像真正的手指一样做出相应反应。)”可知,最新的突破是将人工神经网络植入指尖。故选A项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第四段“when the skin touches an object and then sends the signals to the brain about what's happening. (当皮肤接触到一个物体,然后向大脑发送关于发生了什么的信号。)”可知,当我们皮肤一接触物体,就会有信号传到大脑,而这时,应该是我们指尖的神经末梢发生了“变形”,才会产生信号。所以猜测deform是“发生改变”的意思。故选D项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。由文章第一段“Robots can be programmed to move a car and even perform some operations. However, when it comes to picking up something that they have not touched before, such as an egg, they often fail. Now, engineers have invented an artificial fingertip (指尖) which breaks that limitation. It enables machines to sense objects as a human fingertip does.(机器人可以编程来移动汽车,甚至执行一些操作。然而,当要捡起他们以前从未碰过的东西时,比如鸡蛋,他们往往会失败。现在,工程师们发明了一种人工指尖,打破了这一限制。它使机器能够像人类的指尖一样感知物体。)”以及结合下文可知,文章主要讲科学家通过研究发明,使机器人更具有像人类一样的感知。所以C项Robots Have Become More Flexible and Sensitive(人工指尖给机器人带来了人类般的触感)为短文最佳标题。故选C项。
D
Feeling bad after a favorite show ends is common, and it even has an informal name: post-series depression (PSD). Rita Kottasz, a marketing professor at Kingston University, describes PSD as “a feeling of emptiness and upset when something you love finishes”. This experience can be found in TV shows, books, or video games, creating a desire for more.
The idea of PSD gained popularity on social media and fan blogs in the mid-2010s, especially during the Golden Age of TV. Kottasz prefers not to use the name PSD, instead calling it “consumer saudade”, a Portuguese word meaning nostalgic (怀旧的) longing. However, a journal editor told her to use PSD because its widely used outside of research.
Kottasz and her co-workers published a research dividing the types of PSD based on interviews with fans who felt sad after their favorite things ended. Common emotions included frustration, disappointment, sadness, and emptiness. Some fans even felt that life was less complete or that they had lost “best friends”.
While PSD is often connected to TV shows, Kottasz is exploring its connection to other media, such as the sudden break of K-pop band BTS (防弹少年团) and novels like Harry Potter. Younger people are more influenced than older ones, partially because companies like Netflix are always giving viewers new movies and shows.
What might surprise many people is that binge-watching does not seem to cause PSD. Instead, long-term watching may be a factor. Kottasz thinks watching a show over several seasons or reading novels across many years strengthens a person’s relationship to the characters (人物). In her 2019 paper, she said a Harry Potter fan who started reading the series at age 9 and was "sadly left behind’ after the final book and film published years later.
But it isn’t quite as simple as saying the end of a show or novel controls our emotion. Brian Kong, a Chicago-based psychologist, is worried that PSD might not imply (暗示) a cause and effect relationship between low moods and a program’s end. Instead, he says that when viewers experiencing lasting bad feelings, watching TV might be acting as an anesthetic (麻醉剂) for a deeper mental problem, like how some people with anxiety drink alcohol. In other words, the low mood already existed, and watching the series only masked it.
32 Which of the following is a common response among fans experiencing PSD?
A. A fresh sense of purpose for life. B. A deep satisfaction after the show.
C. A great sense of loss of best friends. D. A strong desire for a new hobby.
33. What does the underlined word “binge-watching” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Reviewing every detail of a TV show day and night.
B. Watching many episodes (集) of a TV show at one time.
C. Following the episodes of a TV show for a long time.
D. Reading a book series while watching the TV adaptation (改編版).
34. What doe Brian Kong imply in the last paragraph?
A. PSD covers up a deeper mental problem.
B. Viewers with bad feelings like drinking alcohol.
C. Watching TV is the main cause of low moods.
D. Watching TV series can make mental problems worse.
35. What might the following paragraphs focus on?
A. The solutions to post-series depression.
B. The marketing (营销) strategies of TV shows.
C. The difference between PSD and nostalgia.
D. The influence of social media on fan emotions.

Here’s Why Planning a Trip Can Help Your Mental Health
There’s some good news for globe-trotters (环球旅行者): According to researchers, looking ahead to your next adventure could benefit your mental health, even if you’re not sure when that adventure will be.
Some psychologists believe in the mental benefits of vacationing somewhere new. For example, travel can enhance empathy, attention, energy, and focus. Other research suggests that the act of adapting to foreign cultures may also facilitate creativity. But what about the act of planning a trip? Can we get a mental health boost from travel before we even leave home?
Planning and anticipating a trip can be almost as enjoyable as going on the trip itself, and there’s research to back it up. A 2014 Cornell University study delved (探索、探究) into how the anticipation of an experience (like a trip) can increase a person’s happiness substantially — much more so than the anticipation of buying material goods. An earlier study, published by the University of Surrey in 2002, found that people are at their happiest when they have a vacation planned.
Matthew Killingsworth, now a senior fellow at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, says trip-planning encourages an optimistic outlook. “As humans, we spend a lot of our mental lives living in the future,” says Killingsworth, whose work centers on understanding the nature and causes of human happiness. “Our future-mindedness can be a source of joy if we know good things are coming, and travel is an especially good thing to have to look forward to.”

Though the movie is 30 years old most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say good-bye to the old building.

32. Which of the following is a common response among fans experiencing PSD?
A. A fresh sense of purpose for life. B. A deep satisfaction after the show.
C A great sense of loss of best friends.

第二节(满分20分)
67. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
