RESTORE AND REWILD
The 2024 Nature Restoration Law aims to renew and protect 20 percent of the European Union’s (EU’s) decreased land by 2030. Europe is launching hundreds of bold rewilding initiatives in the following places, which leads to a lot of benefits for wildlife and people.
Apennine
Hunting, poisoning, and traffic accidents endanger some 60 Marsican bears in the central Apennine. Removing outdated fencing helps them move freely and the number of tourists is strictly controlled.
Kraansvlak
Bison (野牛) introduced to work as landscape engineers feed on trees invading easily destroyed sand hills. The result: a sustainable ecosystem and habitat.
Koitajoki
Work to restore 2,500 acres of peatlands (泥炭地) has been beneficial to birds, flood reduction, and ecosystems under the water, aiding fish such as Finland’s last natural salmon.
Carpathian Mountains
The government’s calling on sustainable tourism leads to decreasing tourist numbers. The region is seeing the return of wildlife to abandoned farmland.
CONSERVATION VS. REWILDING
These two restoration models are guided by different approaches and long-term goals.
Conservation
Rewilding
Application zone
Smaller, isolated habitats in need of careful management
Large-scale landscape, marginal farmland (边远农田), or postindustrial sites
Approaches
The approach is defensive, involved, human-led

Goals
Focuses on monitoring and distribution of endangered species
Boosts rare species

Growing up, Stephanie Laska never worked out, preferring music class to P. E. and enjoying sugary drinks and snacks. It wasn’t until she reached her 40s, weighing around 300 pounds, that she decided to change her lifestyle. Simple diet changes, like cutting out soda and limiting desserts, helped her lose 50 pounds. But she hit a plateau (停滞期) and knew she needed to start moving.
Initially, Laska decided to just walk. Gradually, she added running to her routine, starting with just one side of a tennis court and eventually running her first mile in 2014.
Laska kept her new habit a secret at first. One day, at the park with her kids, she decided to run to catch up with them on their bikes. “The look on my daughter’s face when she saw me running was like she saw Santa Claus,” Laska recalls. That’s when she started taking her one-mile jogs up to a 5 km,10 km, half-marathon and eventually marathon distance. In 2015, she ran her first marathon and won the first place in her age group.
“What motivated me was that it wasn’t as hard as I thought” says Laska, who has lost a total of 140 pounds and kept it off for four years. “People make huge decisions, but I just made a small choice to take a walk.” She emphasizes that these small decisions can snowball into significant changes.
Taking life one step at a time has not only improved Laska’s well-being but promoted relationships with her husband and kids and even brought on a promotion at work. When asked about the key to losing weight, Laska says, “Exercise. For me, it is not about running a marathon, but about those daily decisions to just go outside.”
4. Why did Laska want to change her lifestyle?
A To remain young. B. To reduce weight.
C. To inspire children. D. To appreciate music.
5. How did Laska begin her exercise journey?
A. By just going on foot. B. By forming a new habit.
C. By running along a court. D. By simply changing diets.
6. What drove Laska to run longer?
A. Her kid’s amazement at her running. B. Reaching a plateau in losing weight.
C. Significant changes brought by running. D. Getting a prize in running marathons.
7 What does the author want to tell us?
A. Better late than never. B. More haste, less speed.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Small steps, big benefits.
C
In the heart of the thick forests of the Greater Hinggan Mountains, forestry police officer Zhao Xiaohui and his colleague Li Hui begin their day’s patrol in the mountainous area of Alongshan town, Inner Mongolia, as morning sunlight pierces through the trees. Zhao explains, “The work of forest police is different from the police officers in cities. For us, the abundant forest with various wild animals running around carefree is our mission, which is also the value of our job.”
The Greater Hinggan Mountains, stretching from Heilongjiang province to Inner Mongolia, host the country’s largest forest. Zhao and Li’s branch oversees 357, 427 hectares, with forest covering 339, 520 hectares, which means a climate of unpredictable extremes throughout the year. The region experiences harsh winters and short, hot summers, with temperatures dropping to-50°C, making it one of the coldest areas in the country.
After graduating from college in 1990, the then 21-year-old Zhao became a forest police officer and has dedicated himself to safeguarding this region against the challenges posed by extreme weather and wildlife. Li, who joined the branch in 2017, is a post-1990s generation police officer. She takes pride in her job, although it quite differs from the heroic images in crime-fighting movies that inspired her to pursue law enforcement. Daily patrols of Zhao and Li cover nearly 100 kilometers by car and over 30 kilometers on foot despite the harsh conditions.
They have patrolled in extreme cold and protected forests after seven years’ cooperation. “I have spent years here in the company of these forests. I know where the flowers bloom, where the birds sing, and where the deer roam. I see the wildlife and plant life flourishing. It fills me with immense pride,” Li reflects.
Over the years, forest police officers like Zhao and Li have made significant contributions in guaranteeing the region’s environmental conservation, ensuring the protection of its diverse ecosystems. Their devotion helps maintain the natural beauty and wildlife of this important region.
8. What is the mission of forest police?
A. Enforcing the law in cities. B. Doing research on wildlife.
C. Monitoring climate of forests. D. Protecting forests and wildlife.
9. What challenge do Zhao and Li face during the patrols?
A. Rescuing injured animals. B. Fighting against constant crimes.
C. Navigating extreme weather conditions. D. Working irregular hours without breaks.
10. How does Li feel about her job?
A. Exhausted but long-awaited. B. Tough but fulfilled.
C. Discouraged but highly-respected. D. Doubtful but excited.
11. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Guardians of the Forests. B. Explorers of Bio-diversity.
C. Advocates of Natural beauty. D. Protectors of Persona Safety.
D
Scurvy has long been associated with early explorers who lacked access to fresh fruits and vegetables while they traveled around the globe for years at a time. But scurvy, which is caused by Vitamin C deficiency (缺乏), isn’t an illness that has gone away.
Doctors recently diagnosed (诊断) scurvy in two patients living in distant parts of the planet, one in Canada and one in Australia. The Australian case centers on a 51-year-old man. Doctors ran their first series of tests to check for internal bleeding, as well as blood disorders. But none of their diagnostic tools offered any clues as to what was causing the man’s illness. Doctors learned that the man was unemployed and living alone. He’d been eating mostly processed foods, and he had begun skipping meals more frequently in the weeks leading to his hospital visit. He received a weight loss surgery eight years earlier but to save money, he stopped taking the nutrients that the doctor told him to take.
Armed with this information, doctors ordered a new round of tests, which showed that the man had no detectable levels of Vitamin C in his system. Eventually, doctors diagnosed him with scurvy.
Doctors in Canada described a similar experience this month in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. A 65-year-old woman came to a Toronto hospital with leg weakness, and poor mobility.
In both cases, doctors didn’t routinely test for scurvy because they thought humans had got rid of scurvy. “This is based on the condition that there is plentiful Vitamin C in our modern food supply, so deficiency should not occur,” says Lauren Ball, a community health researcher. Fortunately, Vitamin C deficiency is easy to treat.
While doctors diagnosed 8.2 cases per 100,000 children in 2016, that number had increased to 26.7 per 100,000 by 2020. The average age of patients with scurvy was 2 years old. And in an analysis of nearly 13,000 Vitamin C tests, 29.9 percent of patients had a modest deficiency and 24.5 percent had a significant deficiency.
12. What did the doctors find after conducting their first series of tests on the man?
A. The man once suffered from scurvy. B. The man used to eat irregularly.
C. Their diagnostic tools went wrong. D. Their test methods didn’t work at all.
13. What’s the doctors’ initial attitude to the possibility of developing scurvy in both cases?
A. Concerned. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
14. What are the statistics in the last paragraph about concerning scurvy?
A. Its features. B. Its variety. C. Its trend. D. Its results.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Scurvy: A New Problem? B. Scurvy: A Forgotten Illness?
C. Scurvy: A Permanent Memory? D. Scurvy: An Easily-treated Disease?
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We all need to give and receive feedback for our work, which sometimes can be tricky. In fact, Confucius, way back in 500 BC, talked about the importance of expressing difficult messages well. However, a recent survey found that only 26 percent of subjects strongly agree that the feedback they get is effective and useful to their work. Either the feedback is so indirect and soft that the brain doesn’t even recognize it or it’s just too direct that it makes the other person unhappy and defensive. ____16____
Ask micro-yes questions.
Propose your feedback by asking a question that is short but important. For instance, you can ask “Do you have five minutes for a brief discussion?” ____17____ First, it lets the other person know that feedback is about to be given. Second, it offers some space for the other to refuse.
Avoid blur (模糊) words.
____18____ To change this, try to say “You said you’d get that email to me by 11 a.m, and I still don’t have it yet 4 p.m.” instead of “You aren’t reliable.” The reason for that is that you want to specify exactly what you want the other person to do.
State the impact.
____19____ For example, you might say, “Because I didn’t get the message, I was blocked on my work and couldn’t move forward” or “I really liked how you added those stories, because it helped me grasp the concepts faster.” It gives others a sense of purpose and meaning and logic between the points.
Wrap the feedback with a question.
Great feedback givers tend to ask something like, “Well, how do you see it?” Or “This is what I’m thinking, but what are your thoughts on it?”. ____20____ Instead, try to make it a joint problem-solving situation.
Now that you know this approach, you can mix and match it to make it work for any difficult conversation.
A. This can do two things for you.
B. This makes your feedback effective.
C. Make the conversation no longer a monologue (独白).
D. Name exactly how the other person has influenced you.
E. The following four methods can be employed to make your feedback direct.
F. There’s a mistaken tendency that we use vague, or not specific words for feedback.
G. Here comes a four-part approach that you can adopt to say any difficult message well.

The verbal conflict with my next-door neighbour, Pat, let me shocked. We had stayed a normal relationship as neighbours since the day we moved in, but his accusation that summer morning was too much, especially when my family had tried our best not to bother him.
I didn’t remember when he stopped being friendly. I could not understand it. He avoided every conversation with us and even walked away when I approached! On that particular morning, I had been gardening out when I saw Pat throw a large doggy waste from his garden onto ours. I was so upset, and I walked right over and faced up to him. “Why would you do that?”
Folding his arms defensively, he claimed that our dog was the culprit (犯人). “I saw him do it,” Pat said. This so-called neighbour was lying to my face! I tried to remain calm. “There is no way our dog did that.” Pat didn’t back down. “Keep your dog off my yard,” he told me. My upset turned to anger and I let loose. “Pat, you are a real piece of work!” I stormed in my front door and called my husband, Kevin, at work. I told him that Pat should accuse our dog of making trouble in his yard. Our dog was a Chihuahua, too little to brave himself out of our house. His advice: stay away from Pat. So I did. Pat returned the favour. If I saw him while we were both out walking, he’d cross to the opposite side of the street. When I drove past his house, he’d turn his back to my car.
One morning, I glanced out upstairs and found Pat was already carefully tending his beautiful grapes. I had a mixed feeling. On one hand, I couldn’t believe a man with so much care for a plant should be such an impolite person; on the other hand, I still couldn’t understand why Pat treated us in such a manner.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Bad dog! How dare you come again to destroy my yard!”.

As a result, I became too fat and often fell ill. Luckily, I became aware of the harm caused by unhealthy living habits. To keep fit, I determined to break myself of these bad habits. Firstly, I began to have a balanced diet. Secondly, I took exercise actively every day. Lastly, I developed the habit of going to bed early and getting up early. With three months passing, I recovered. I suggest other students get out of their unhealthy living habits as soon as possible, because health is more valuable than anything else.
第二节(满分25分)
【57题答案】
【答案】
“Bad dog! How dare you come again to destroy my yard!”. I couldn’t help but feel curious when I heard Pat’s voice, making me glance out of the window once again. There, I spotted Pat attempting to drive a large, black dog out of his garden. Seeing this, I quickly went downstairs, grabbed some snacks for my own dog and used the treats to attract the dog away from his territory, “Thank you,” Pat said to me, a hint of embarrassment in his voice. I merely waved it off, and went back home.
I heard the door knock and found it was Pat, with a handful of grapes. I was surprised to see Pat standing there. “Thank you, and I’m truly sorry,” Pat said as he handed me a bunch of grapes. I dismissed it as a minor incident, assuring him that it was perfectly alright. Pat responded with an uneasy smile and then clarified that he had mistakenly assumed the black dog belonged to me, which was why it had always caused damage in his garden. This misunderstanding had led to his previous unkind behavior towards us. Suddenly, all my previous confusion lifted. I accepted the grapes from Pat and said, “Let bygones be bygones. We can now cherish our time as neighbors.”
