Women are such amazing beings and if you need a bit of inspiration to keep going, here are stories of inspiring women who made a mark on history!
Jane Austen (1775-1817)
She wrote about what life was like during the late 1700s and early 1800s through the books Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma. These books were released within just four years of each other. Two other books, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published after she died. Her face is now on the new £10 note, reminding us every day how much her books have affected us all.
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
She was born into a wealthy family, which disapproved of her entering the nursing profession. After receiving a letter from the Secretary of War who asked her to put together a team and look after British soldiers during the Crimen War, she moved to London. This was the first time that women were allowed to serve in the army. She went home as a hero and even received a thank-you letter from Queen Victoria. She left a legacy in healthcare in the war.
Marie Curie (1867-1934)
One of the most famous scientists of all time comes in the form of Marie Curie. Together with her fellow scientist and husband Pierre, she made amazing work on their discoveries. In1903, they received a Nobel Prize. She won another Nobel Prize in 1911, the first woman to do so. The Curies were the pair who made discoveries on radioactivity, which paved the way for the creation of X-rays.
Mother Teresa (1910-1997)
In September 2016, Mother Teresa was announced to be named as a Saint, which she deserves after her devotion to helping people in poverty. In 1929, she traveled to India and dedicated her whole life to helping poor people, especially in the Indian city of Kolkata. She received the Nobel Prize in 1979 and canceled the big dinner celebration. She then suggested giving all of the money to the poor people in Kolkata.

After completing my first year of studies, I decided to relax by taking a trip through one of the most richly cultured countries in Asia: Nepal.
The first thing I noticed about Nepal was its people. Kind and friendly, ready to help someone in need. I’m saying so because of what I’ve witnessed between the citizens themselves, rather than how they treated me as a visitor. It is shown in the way bus conductors and passengers alike keep the bus waiting for that last passenger who is lagging behind (落后). It is evident in how a motorist smiles and waves off a kid who runs onto the street after his ball. The people are like a hot bowl of soup on a rainy day.
The first place I visited in Nepal was the Sauraha village in the district of Chitwan. It is an amazingly peaceful place, where the people live life at their own pace. It is a great area to see some of the wildlife, such as rhinos and elephants. The capital city of Kathmandu was where I spent most of my time. The city is usually very dusty, so make sure to wear a mask. Another great area in Kathmandu is the district of Thamel. Unlike most other districts, Thamel is very busy throughout the day. Out of all the places I’ve been to within Nepal, Pokhara is undoubtedly the best place to visit. There are a lot of fun things to try out. I’ve gone paragliding as well as boating in Fewa Lake, but you can also go rafting, zip flying and paramotoring.
Nepal is a very affordable destination to travel to. I travelled through the country for about two months and spent a little over 500 US dollars. Accommodation around Nepal is inexpensive, mostly varying from about 500 to 1,500 rupees per night per person. During my stay in Kathmandu, I stayed at a great hotel for two weeks, for 300 rupees per night, which is a great deal.
In a word, Nepal is a fantastic place. Whether you are looking to relax in the wildness and peace of nature, or for an exciting new adventure, Nepal has a variety of choices to offer.
24.Why does the author mention bus conductors in paragraph 2?
A.To thank them for all their hard work.
B.To introduce Nepal’s public transportation.
C.To explain Nepalese people’s sense of time.
D.To show the friendliness of Nepalese people.
25.What do we know about the Sauraha village?
A.It has a fast pace of life. B.It is home to many wild animals.
C.It offers visitors a lot of activities. D.It is a very dusty and noisy place.
26.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The costs of travel in Nepal. B.The interesting places in Nepal.
C.The working people in Kathmandu. D.The author’s experiences in Kathmandu.
27.How does the author develop the text?
A.By following time order. B.By showing district differences.
C.By sharing his own experiences. D.By explaining people’s behavior.

Engineers usually build devices using solids like metal or plastic. However, a team in China has created a new type of device using drops of water. These devices help study and management of tiny amounts of liquid (液体), and the best part is that they are easy to build, adjust, and refashion.
The idea for this project came from blocks. Xin Du, a researcher at Southeast University in Nanjing, China, was inspired when a student brought in a set of blocks. Du realized that just like blocks that can be amalgamated together and can be rearranged, water droplets (水滴) could do something similar. This could be a great way to build systems that control the flow of liquids in tiny tubes, a field known as microfluidics, which studies how liquids move in small spaces, such as in batteries or to model blood flow in the body.
In their research, Du’s team designed a system where water droplets could stick together to form a liquid path. They created a grid with tiny plastic columns that held the droplets in place. When the droplets touched, they joined together but did not spill (溢出) out. This allowed the scientists to control the direction of the liquid path. If they needed to change the direction, they could easily move the droplets around, much like changing the setup of blocks.
The system was reconfigurable, meaning it could be quickly adjusted without starting over. This flexibility is important in microfluidics, where experiments often need to be changed as new discoveries are made.
Du’s team is also working to improve the system by making even smaller channels. Their final goal is to use this technology to improve organoid research, where artificial organs (人造器官) made from living cells are studied. This new system could provide better ways to supply nutrients or blood to these growing cells, making the study of living tissues more accurate and efficient.
28.How does the device created by the team in China differ from others?
A.It is made from plastic. B.It is designed by a student.
C.It employs water drops. D.It features metal structures.
29.What does the underlined word “amalgamated” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Enlarged. B.Combined. C.Distinguished. D.Shown.
30.What does Du’s team expect of the system?
A.It will have wide application in medical treatment.
B.It will bring a heavy profit to the team.
C.It will enable students to be fond of blocks.
D.It will decrease the cost of artificial organs.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Exposure to Various Blocks Sharpens the Brain.
B.Blocks Inspired a New Way to Study Liquids.
C.There Is a Growing Trend Toward Playing Blocks.
D.Engineers Unlocked the Secret of Water Droplets.

In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It’s clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image. I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit — I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that’s a scary thing.
What’s interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn’t lead to happiness. Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don’t suddenly become “happy” people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That’s because experiences are more easily combined with a person’s identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me.
Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences.
It’s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn’t tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don’t have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.
32.Leaf Van Boven’s studies showed that ______ .
A.traveling changes a person’s identity greatly
B.people dislike those who love luxuries
C.experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries
D.luxuries have a negative effect on people’s happiness
33.What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?
A.The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself.
B.The author agrees to spend money on material things.
C.The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels.
D.The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends.
34.What is the author’s advice on expressing oneself?
A.Be selective about designer labels.
B.Create your own personal unique style.
C.Choose styles that are simple and comfortable.
D.Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg’s.
35.The main purpose of the article is to ______ .
A.persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries
B.prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant life
C.tell how to express yourself through appearances
D.report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness

The history of fireworks began around the first century BC, when the Chinese invented gunpowder (火药). 36 They used crackers (爆竹) to scare off bad spirits and express good wishes. Early Chinese fireworks were generally firecrackers, designed to make a loud sound.
Marco Polo is generally believed to bring gunpowder to Europe. As a result, some Europeans attempted to copy the ways of making gunpowder in order to make their own fireworks. 37 It developed aerial shells (礼花弹) which could be forced up high before exploding. This invention further pushed fireworks’ development, making fireworks displays more attractive.
With the development of aerial shells, the history of fireworks took off. Producers began trying to make greater and more complex fireworks which would explode into colorful designs. 38 Besides, they featured special colors, designs, and shapes which were meant to attract viewers, a far cry from the crackers of the 10th century.
39 In the 20th century, fireworks producers began to be concerned about them. They began to notice that many of the chemicals which create the beautiful colors associated with fireworks displays are quite harmful, and that fireworks also produce a lot of bad smoke. As a result, some fireworks producers began trying to produce the fireworks which would cause less smoke.
While the history of fireworks has come quite a way from spirit-frightening crackers, fireworks displays continue to amaze people all over the world, and the bright colors of fireworks are closely associated with major celebrations in the eyes of many people. Fireworks displays are typically well-attended as a result. And companies which specialize in fireworks can charge high prices for their services, especially on major holidays. 40
A.Fireworks also have negative side effects.
B.Fireworks displays began lasting much longer.
C.There were other three great inventions in ancient China.
D.Italy made a special contribution to the history of fireworks.
E.In spite of this, there are still many customers for the fireworks.
F.Thus in Italy and Germany, several producers of fireworks appeared.
G.By the 10th century AD, the Chinese had produced fireworks for New Year.

阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或所给单词的正确形式。
Senior citizens are the first to come to our mind when you think of hearing loss, but in a recent report, hearing professionals worry teenagers will soon outnumber aging adults 56 it comes to living with hearing loss.
The rise in popularity of personal audio devices from iPods to smart phones has had dangerous effect on the ears of those who use them most, teenagers! A research 57 (conduct) by the World Health Organization finds that nearly 50% of teens 58 (fall) into the habit of exposing themselves to unsafe levels of sound so far.
A sound is considered unsafe when it goes beyond 85 decibels (分贝). At that level, it takes just 8 hours of listening over your lifetime to cause damage. The louder the sound is, the 59 (little) time it takes to cause damage. Because hearing loss is 60 (typical) considered a health problem for the elderly, it is difficult to convince already stubborn teenagers that they really are doing damage 61 their ears.
Young adults 62 have been exposed to loud noise over a period of time may have some hearing loss symptoms. 63 (they) ability to learn is compromised, and they may have difficulty developing social 64 (skill).
In an effort to help teens better protect their hearing, we suggest 65 (set) volume limits on personal audio devices. It is also good to limit the amount of time exposed to noise and to take listening breaks to give the ears a rest.

This Friday brought a mix of emotions — both excitement and disappointment — all because of a poster from school. When I got home, Mum saw the poster in my hand and asked, “What’s this?”
“A poster for a five-day art camp,” I explained. “But Emily can’t go.”
“Would you like to attend?” Mum asked. “You’ve always loved art.” Her words reminded me of what Emily had said earlier: “Tessa, you’re the real artist. My brother thought the roses I painted were rocket ships.” I sighed. Mum patted my back. She knew I had a hard time jumping into something with no familiar faces around. “Maybe next year.”
“Maybe,” I echoed (附和). Then I told Mum I wanted to go outside to draw the Westons’ pine tree (松树). She nodded with an encouraging smile.
As I walked into the bright sunshine, I couldn’t help but think about the art camp. I wished I felt a little bit braver. Emily could make friends with a whole bus of kids in ten minutes, but my stomach felt like a little boat tossed in a heavy storm when I was surrounded by strangers... By the time I started drawing, I had made up my mind to forget about the art camp.
I began by drawing the pine tree’s strong and straight trunk, and then added the beautiful branches, making sure the upper ones lifted gently towards the sun. Lost in my work, I jumped when I heard Mr. Weston speak up, “You’ve done a great job showing the strength of that tree on paper.”
“Thanks,” I smiled, glancing up.
As I drew the needles to the branches, Mr. Weston told me something I never knew about pines: If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dies. The roots grow outwards, not downwards — to get enough water and air to support the tree.
“You have a good eye, Tessa.” With these words, Mr. Weston nodded goodbye.
Paragraph 1: His words set me thinking.

D

As the result of my 54 , the warm-up became a real warm-up. The 5-km run transformed into an 55 day of practice. And I was no longer last in anything we did.

34.What is the author’s advice on expressing oneself?
A.Be selective about designer labels.
B.Create your own personal unique style.
C.Choose styles that are simple and comfortable.

32.细节理解题。根据第二段中“In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. (事实上,美国科罗拉多大学博尔德分校Leaf Van Boven的一系列研究表明,在旅行和类似经历上花钱的人比那些把钱花在物质上的人获得更多的快乐)”可知,Leaf Van Boven的研究表明,与奢侈品相比,经历能给人们带来更多的幸福,故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据第一段中“I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit — I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that’s a scary thing.

Fireworks displays are typically well-attended as a result. And companies which specialize in fireworks can charge high prices for their services, especially on major holidays. E选项“In spite of this, there are still many customers for the fireworks. (尽管如此,烟花仍有许多顾客)”能总结上文,符合题意。故选E。

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: The next Monday, I signed up for the camp.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
His words set me thinking. As I reflected on Mr. Weston’s words, the analogy (类比)of pine roots growing out, not down, struck a chord with me deeply. Perhaps I could learn something valuable from stepping beyond my comfort zone, just like the tree’s need to spread its roots to grow tall. Surprisingly, even in the absence of my best friend, the idea of the art camp now seemed so appealing. Fueled by this newfound understanding, I eagerly shared my insights with Mum, who listened attentively as I poured out my thoughts. With her approving nod and encouraging gaze, I felt a surge of determination and confidence to embrace the camp as an opportunity for artistic exploration and growth.
The next Monday, I signed up for the camp. As I handed in my registration form, the initial disappointment I felt gradually gave way to a thrilling sense of anticipation, fueled by the countless possibilities awaiting me. Throughout the camp, I immersed myself in interactive workshops, eagerly absorbing new techniques and connecting with fellow art enthusiasts like me. It turned out that the strangers I was initially afraid of were already my friends. From this experience, I realized that embracing unfamiliarity and conquering fears can pave the way for remarkable personal growth and opportunities. The towering pine tree in the Westons’ yard serves as a constant reminder that the strongest growth often springs from venturing into the unknown world.

第二节 (满分25分)
His words set me thinking. As I reflected on Mr. Weston’s words, the analogy of pine roots growing out, not down, struck a chord with me deeply.
