When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits I earned from the course wouldn’t count toward my major. By the end of the session, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic. But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the waitlist. That’s when the teacher asked for a volunteer to submit the first workshop story. Silence blanketed the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before. Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class?” He said he would. So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. Years later, I’d completed a degree in creative writing and was working on a novel when a literary agent asked to read the first 50 pages of my draft. But I wasn’t comfortable showing her anything; the novel was far from done. Throughout graduate school, I’d been advised many times not to contact agents until I have a complete draft. In the meanwhile, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the agent might not remember me after a year. So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed me on the strength of those chapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication of three novels. Determination, focus, perseverance-the qualities that I consider crucial in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I’d trained my gaze only on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities to look up, raise my hand, and say yes. 24.What made the author finally decide to take the course? A.The popularity of the course. B.Her confidence in her writing skills. C.Her curiosity about story writing. D.The need to get credits for her degree. 25.The author volunteered to write the first workshop story to ________. A.challenge herself B.win a place in the class C.display her talent D.impress the teacher 26.The author sent her first three chapters to the agent because ________. A.she wanted to get the chance of publication B.her story was attractive to readers C.the agent asked her to turn in the work D.her friends advised her to do so 27.What does the passage mainly tell us? A.Action speaks louder than words. B.Confidence leads to growth and fulfillment. C.Success comes to those who dare. D.Chance favors only the prepared mind. 根据文章第二段“By the end of the session, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic. (然而,在那堂课结束时,我决定自己必须成为这门课程的一部分。或许,作为一个终身读者,我渴望了解故事是如何施展其魔力的。)”可知,作者决定选修这门课程是源于作者对故事写作的好奇心和渴望。故选C。 25.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the waitlist. That’s when the teacher asked for a volunteer to submit the first workshop story. (但参加这门课程是不可能的:我甚至都不在候补名单上。就在这时,老师要求一名志愿者提交第一篇工作坊故事。)”以及第五段“Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class?” He said he would. (我抓住机会,举手问道:“如果我第一个来,你会给我一个上课的名额吗?”他说他会。)”可推测,作者自愿写第一个工作坊故事是为了赢得一个上课的名额。故选B。 26.细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed me on the strength of those chapters alone. (所以,我再次没有低头避开眼神交流,而是反其道而行之。我给她发了前三章。一个月后,她仅凭这三章就与我签约了。)”可知,作者给代理人发前三章的目的是为了得到出版的机会。故选A。 27. 根据文章最后一段“Determination, focus, perseverance-the qualities that I consider crucial in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I’d trained my gaze only on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities to look up, raise my hand, and say yes. C The biggest criticism (批评) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline friends to online friends. In fact there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally unfounded. Research by Allen et al found that people are not replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline relationships. They also found that our online friendships actually allow us to have discussions with a much more diverse set of people than in the real world and improve our psychological happiness. However, there is one part of social networking that is deeply worrying. We find ourselves in a hyper-connected world where people access social media day and night, excited to make announcements about the tiniest details of their lives. Research is starting to show that this culture is negatively affecting not our friendships but our character. Professor Larry D.Rosen, in his book iDisorder, presents evidence that social networking is turning us into narcissists (自恋者). He says that young people who overuse social networking sites can become vain, aggressive, and show anti-social behavior in their offline lives. But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing—empathy. This is the emotion that bonds us together; it allows us to see the world from our friends’ points of view. Without it, we are far less able to connect and form meaningful adult relationships. Sherry Turkle, a professor of social sciences at MIT, suggests that people are no longer comfortable being alone. This is something confirmed by a study where 200 university students were asked to go without social media for 24 hours. Many admitted an addiction to their online social network; most complained that they felt cut off from family and friends. But being alone is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendships with others. She believes, as is the title of her book, that we are simply “Alone Together”. These potential changes in our characters are rather disturbing. If nothing is done, our young people could well be in trouble. Therefore, suggestions about ways to encourage our young people to avoid the problems of social networking should be made, so they can develop the kinds of friendships that are required to grow into well-adjusted and happy adults. 28.In this passage, the author mainly argues that ________. A.internet culture causes various problems B.we are losing some most important emotions C.online friendships do good to offline friendships D.social networking affects young people’s personalities 29.According to Sherry Turkle, how can we make meaningful friendships with others? A.by getting in touch with online friends B.by avoiding the problems of social networking C.by reflecting and getting in touch with ourselves D.by being alone then having discussions with a much more diverse set of people 30.From the passage, we can learn that ________. A.social media have more advantages B.young people will develop offline friendships C.young people can’t go without social media D.we are becoming unable to understand others well 【答案】28.D 29.C 30.D 【解析】本文是一篇议论文,主要讲述了社交网络有助于让我们与比现实世界中更加多元的人交流,提升我们的幸福感,它不会对我们的友谊产生负面影响,但会对我们的性格产生负面影响,所以需要提出建议避免社交网络的问题。 28. 通读全文,尤其是第二段最后一句“Research is starting to show that this culture is negatively affecting not our friendships but our character.(研究开始表明,这种文化不对我们的友谊产生负面影响,而是对我们的性格产生负面影响。)” 根据第四段中的“But being alone is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendships with others.(但Turkle认为,独处是我们自我反思并接触到真正自我的一段时间。只有这样,我们才能与他人建立有意义的友谊。)”可知,Turkle认为与他人建立有意义的友谊的方式是自我反思并接触自我。故选C。 30.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing—empathy. This is the emotion that bonds us together; it allows us to see the world from our friends’ points of view. Without it, we are far less able to connect and form meaningful adult relationships.(但也许更令人不安的影响是,我们最基本的情绪之一——同理心似乎正在消失。这是把我们联系在一起的情绪;它使我们能够从朋友的角度看世界。如果没有它,我们就无法建立联系并形成有意义的成人关系。)”可知,我们的同理心似乎正在消失,而这种情绪能够让我们与朋友建立联系,失去它的话,我们就无法建立联系并形成有意义的成人关系。由此可推测出,由于我们的同理心似乎正在消失,所以我们越来越不能很好地理解别人的思想。故选D。 D A person could be forgiven for believing 20 years ago that the Internet would soon revolutionise academic publishing, because it became possible for publishers to spread scholarly work at the click of a button — much cheaper than the traditional subscription-based (订阅) model. Recognising the opportunity, many scholars and librarians started to advocate a new, open access model, in which articles are made freely available online to anyone. The result would be a true online public library of science. However, more than two decades later, the movement has made little progress, and the traditional subscription-based model remains entrenched. Fortunately, things are changing. A big shoe dropped when the University of California (UC) Libraries, on of the biggest library systems, declined to renew its contract with Elsevier, a leading scientific publisher. Elsevier wanted the libraries to pay two fees: one for its package of licensed journals and the other for the use of Elsevier’s open access model. UC Libraries wanted the licensed journals fee to cover the open access fee; they also wanted open access to all UC researches published in Elsevier journals. When the two sides couldn’t come to terms, the libraries walked away. Actually, the open access revolution is more likely to be led by research funding agencies, who can use their purse power to promote open access. A team of funders, Coalition S, insisted that any research they fund should be published in a journal that makes all of its articles freely and immediately available to the public, which is called Plan S. Now that some librarians and funders are flexing their muscles, what should academics do? The worst response would be to complain that Plan S deprives (剥夺) them of academic freedom. Some thoughtful academics might worry that a shift to open access would affect their promotion. After all, subscription journals are more familiar and more prestigious (有威望的) in the current system. However, if enough academics support open access, the system could reach a tipping point beyond which subscriptions no longer signal prestige. Reaching that point would take considerable time and efforts, but it is possible. When the journal system started in 1665, it was kind of a form of open access. Journals allowed academics to learn openly from one another. It was only in the 1900s that the journal system became thoroughly commoditized (商品化). Now is the time to bring it back to its roots. 31.What does the underlined word “entrenched” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A.Unpopular. B.Unfixed. C.Unchanged. D.Unknown. 32.What is the main cause of the failed negotiation between UC Libraries and Elsevier? A.The number of published researches. B.The charge for open access model. C.The duration of the contract. D.The way of payment. 33.What can be inferred from the passage? A.Academics think open access model will help them get promoted. B.Publishers are willing to abandon the subscription model gradually. C.Establishing a true online public library of science requires joint efforts. D.Open access model will soon take the place of subscription-based model. 34.What is the author’s attitude towards the open access model? A.Disapproving. B.Indifferent. C.Doubtful. D.Supportive. 根据划线单词上一句“However, more than two decades later, the movement has made little progress(然而,20多年过去了,这项运动几乎没有取得任何进展)”可推测,传统的订阅模式依然根深蒂固。 根据文章第三段“Elsevier wanted the libraries to pay two fees: one for its package of licensed journals and the other for the use of Elsevier’s open access model. UC Libraries wanted the licensed journals fee to cover the open access fee; they also wanted open access to all UC researches published in Elsevier journals. When the two sides couldn’t come to terms, the libraries walked away.( Elsevier希望图书馆支付两项费用:一项是其授权期刊包,另一项是使用爱思唯尔的开放获取模式。加州大学图书馆希望授权期刊费用能够覆盖开放获取费用;他们还想开放访问所有发表在Elsevier期刊上的加州大学的研究。当双方无法达成协议时,图书馆走开了。)”可知,加州大学图书馆和Elsevier之间的谈判失败,主要是因为预期费用和访问权限上的分歧。故选B。 33.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“However, if enough academics support open access, the system could reach a tipping point beyond which subscriptions no longer signal prestige. Reaching that point would take considerable time and efforts, but it is possible.(然而,如果有足够多的学者支持开放获取,该系统可能会达到一个临界点,超过这个临界点,订阅就不再意味着威望。达到这一点需要相当长的时间和努力,但这是可能的。)”可知,建立一个真正的在线科学公共图书馆需要大家的共同努力。故选C。 34.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“When the journal system started in 1665, it was kind of a form of open access. Journals allowed academics to learn openly from one another. It was only in the 1900s that the journal system became thoroughly commoditized (商品化). Now is the time to bring it back to its roots(当期刊系统在1665年开始的时候,它是一种开放获取的形式。期刊允许学者们公开地相互学习。直到20世纪,期刊系统才彻底商品化。现在是时候把它带回它的根源。)”可知,作者支持开放获取模式,并认为应该将其恢复到最初的状态。因此,作者对于开放获取模型的态度是支持的。故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有项为多余选项。 Everyone feels anxious or nervous at times. Feelings like these can surface when you face a challenge. 35 You might feel anxious when it’s your turn to speak in class. These feelings can be uncomfortable, but you can manage with the help of the following tips. ●Start with a growth mindset Some people have a fixed mindset. They might think, “This is how I am. I get anxious before speaking in class. So I don’t raise my hand.” With a fixed mindset, people don’t think things can change. But people with a growth mindset know they can get better at just about everything — with effort and practice. 36 ●Notice what anxiety feels like for you. Get to know the body feelings that are part of anxiety. When you’re anxious, do you feel “butterflies”? Shaky hands? A faster heartbeat? Know that these feelings are part of the body’s normal response to a challenge. 37 Next time they happen, try to notice the feelings without getting upset. Accept them and let them be there. ● 38 When you’re anxious, it’s common to tell yourself things like, “I can’t do this.” Or “What if I mess this up?” Instead, tell yourself something that could help you face the moment with a bit of courage, “It’s OK to feel anxious. I can do this anyway.” It’s facing the anxiety that helps you manage it. This is called exposure. Learning to cope with anxiety takes time and patience. Most of all, it takes practice and willingness to face it. It starts with one small step. 39 A.Give it all of your attention. B.That includes dealing with anxiety. C.Talk yourself through anxiety and face it. D.They’re not harmful and they fade on their own. E.It can help you “reset” and be ready to move forward. F.For example, you might feel nervous before taking big exams. G.The more you practice, the better you’ll get at managing anxiety. 35.上文“Feelings like these can surface when you face a challenge.(当你面临挑战时,像这样的感受会浮现) ”空格处是对面临挑战的进一步举例说明。F选项中的“before taking exams”和“face a challenge”一致。 36.上文“But people with a growth mindset know they can get better at just about everything— with effort and practice. (但是那些有成长思维方式的人知道他们可以做好一切,只要肯努力和练习)”B选项中的that指代上文的“can get better at just about everything— with effort and practice.” 37.上文“Know that these feelings are part of the body’s normal response to a challenge.(知道那些感受是你的身体应对挑战的正常反应。)” 38.下文“Instead, tell yourself something that could help you face the moment with a bit of courage. It’s facing the anxiety that helps you manage it.(反而要告诉你自己勇敢些能帮你面对这一瞬间.正是面对焦虑才能帮你应对它。)”此空为小标题。根据下文可知本段在表达要面对焦虑。C选项中的face it和下文的要面对它保持一致。故选C。 39.上文“Most of all, it takes practice and willingness to face it. It starts with one small step.(最重要的是,它需要练习以及愿意面对它。)”G选项的“ The more you practice”练习的越多,越能战胜焦虑,和上文保持一致。 For millions of Facebook users, choosing which photo to use for an online profile is an important decision. According to a study by researchers at the UT Dallas Center, the photos we select may reflect individual preferences, but they also appear to reflect more deeply rooted, unconscious cultural differences. Previous research has shown that culture can affect not only language and custom, but also how we experience the world and process information. Western cultures, for example, condition people to think of themselves as highly independent entities (实体), whereas East Asian cultures stress collectivism and interdependence. Dr. Denise Park, co-director of the Center at UT Dallas, and former graduate student Dr. Chih-Mao Huang of the University of Illinois, were curious about whether these patterns of cultural influence extend to cyberspace. In a paper published in the International Journal of Psychology, they examined the profile photographs of more than 500 active Facebook users from the United States and East Asia. Overall, they found that profile photos of Americans are more likely to focus on the individual’s face, while the profiles of East Asians tend to less emphasize the face and include more background features. Americans also show greater smile intensity compared to East Asian Facebook users. The findings show marked cultural differences in the focus of attention among East Asian and American Facebook users. Moreover, they echo previous research on cultural influences on visual sense, attention, and reasoning in the offline world. “We believe these findings relate to a cultural difference to be more individualistic and independent in the US and more communal and interdependent in Asia,” said Park. The research also found that cultural influences over our self-presentation online can shift over time and from place to place. In one of the study samples, Americans studying in Japan and Japanese studying in the United States both showed a tendency to adjust their profile photos to the general preferences of their host country. “Facebook constitutes an extended social context in which personal profiles mirror various individual characteristics, private thoughts, and social behaviors,” noted Huang. “As such, the study presents a new approach to investigate cognition and behaviors across cultures by using Facebook as a data collection platform.” 40.What may an online profile photo reflect? _______________________________________________________________ 41.According to the research, how are American and East Asian Facebook users different in choosing their profile photos? 42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. In one of the study samples, Americans studying in Japan showed a tendency to adjust their profile photos to the general preferences of America. 43.Apart from cultural differences, what other factors might influence one’s choice of profile photo on social media? And give some examples.  (In about 40 words) 【答案】 40.It may reflect individual preferences and more deeply rooted, unconscious cultural differences. 41.Facebook users in America are more likely to use profile photos that focus on their faces, while the photos of East Asians tend to less emphasize the face and include more background features. Americans also show greater smile intensity compared to East Asian Facebook users. 42.In one of the study samples, Americans studying in Japan showed a tendency to adjust their profile photos to the general preferences of America. Americans studying in Japan showed a tendency to adjust their profile photos to the general preferences of their host country because the culture of their host country has an influence on their self-presentation online, which means they may show the preferences of Japan. 43.I think apart from cultural differences, ages, hobbies and jobs may affect choices of profile photos on social media. For example, if a person is retired and likes travelling, he may likes to choose the beautiful scenery as his profile photo to reflect his state of life. 根据文章第一段“According to a study by researchers at the UT Dallas Center, the photos we select may reflect individual preferences, but they also appear to reflect more deeply rooted, unconscious cultural differences. (根据德克萨斯大学达拉斯中心研究人员的一项研究,我们选择的照片可能反映了个人偏好,但它们似乎也反映了更根深蒂固的、无意识的文化差异。)”可知,一张网上的个人资料照片可能反映了个人偏好和更根深蒂固的、无意识的文化差异。故答案是:It may reflect individual preferences and more deeply rooted, unconscious cultural differences. 41. 根据文章第二段“Overall, they found that profile photos of Americans are more likely to focus on the individual’s face, while the profiles of East Asians tend to less emphasize the face and include more background features. Americans also show greater smile intensity compared to East Asian Facebook users. (总的来说,他们发现美国人的个人资料照片更倾向于关注个人的脸,而东亚人的个人资料往往不太强调脸,而是包括更多的背景特征。与东亚Facebook用户相比,美国人的微笑强度也更高。)”可知答案是:Facebook users in America are more likely to use profile photos that focus on their faces, while the photos of East Asians tend to less emphasize the face and include more background features. Americans also show greater smile intensity compared to East Asian Facebook users. 42. 根据文章第五段“In one of the study samples, Americans studying in Japan and Japanese studying in the United States both showed a tendency to adjust their profile photos to the general preferences of their host country. (在其中一个研究样本中,在日本留学的美国人和在美国留学的日本人都倾向于根据东道国的总体偏好调整他们的头像。)”可知,在日本留学的美国人倾向于根据所在国的总体喜好来调整个人资料照片,因为所在国文化会影响他们在网上的自我表现。故答案是:In one of the study samples, Americans studying in Japan showed a tendency to adjust their profile photos to the general preferences of America. Americans studying in Japan showed a tendency to adjust their profile photos to the general preferences of their host country because the culture of their host country has an influence on their self-presentation online, which means they may show the preferences of Japan. 43. I think apart from cultural differences, ages, hobbies and jobs may affect choices of profile photos on social media. B As a clueless freshman, I waltzed into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them. A.she wanted to get the chance of publication B.her story was attractive to readers C.the agent asked her to turn in the work D.her friends advised her to do so 27.What does the passage mainly tell us? A.Action speaks louder than words. B.Confidence leads to growth and fulfillment. C.Success comes to those who dare. D.Chance favors only the prepared mind. C The biggest criticism (批评) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline friends to online friends. In fact there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally unfounded. Research by Allen et al. found that people are not replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline relationships. A.social media have more advantages B.young people will develop offline friendships C.young people can’t go without social media D.we are becoming unable to understand others well D A person could be forgiven for believing 20 years ago that the Internet would soon revolutionise academic publishing, because it became possible for publishers to spread scholarly work at the click of a button — much cheaper than the traditional subscription-based (订阅) model. C.Doubtful. ________________________________________________________________________________________ 41.According to the research, how are American and East Asian Facebook users different in choosing their profile photos? ________________________________________________________________________________________ 42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. The Kaikoura coast will be our target destination. Everything is designed for the average surfer who may have started later than they would have liked. It’s about fun and new surfing experiences. You will improve your surfing by theory sessions, land-based simulations (模拟) video coaching and tips on mindset. Day 1: We will meet as a group in Christchurch around 10 am, load up the van (小型货车) with our surfboards and equipment and head for Kaikoura. We will get to know each other, I’ll figure out where your surfing is at and we’ll hopefully fit two sessions in once at our destination. Day 2-4: Three full days of continuous surfing and coaching. In between sessions we’ll check videos and go through theory lessons while calming down. We can also check out local attractions and good food spots etc. Day 5: We’ll fit in a couple of surf sessions before heading back to Christchurch Airport around 2 pm. By attending the Christchurch surf camp you will come away with the skills and confidence to move gradually in the direction of your surfing goals. I hope you’ll feel a sense of possibility that you can learn some new skills. You’ll also get: ● video footage (片段) from all your surf sessions ● downloads of all the material from the theory sessions ● a relaxing positive time with like-minded people 21.Who are the camp targeted at? A.Professional athletes. B.Unskilled surfers. C.Surf lifeguards. D.Surf coaches. 22.What will participants do on Day 1? A.Select proper surfboards. B.Visit local attractions. C.Receive skill check. D.Watch video lessons. 23.What will participants get from this camp? A.Resources and skills. B.Medals and certificates. C.Tickets and additional training. D.Individual tutoring and online classes. B As a clueless freshman, I waltzed into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them. C The biggest criticism (批评) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline friends to online friends. In fact there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally unfounded. Research by Allen et al. found that people are not replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline relationships.
