WELCOME UNIT Unit 2 Making a difference Period 5 Writing Aesha Ash spent most of her life on ballet dancing and even turned it into a career as a member of the New York City Ballet. Much as she loved to dance, she found the weight of her responsibility heavy because she was often the only African American ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) in her classes and company. After retiring (退休) from ballet in 2007, Aesha enjoyed the quiet life for more than ten years before she decided to come back to ballet, but in a completely new way. She started The Swan Dreams Project that helps kids in poor areas get into the world of ballet. 课时作业(六) Aesha set up a oneweek camp that invited kids to not only learn the basics of ballet, but also get an introduction to French (since she says it is “the language of ballet”). Her first camp was in 2018 in a poor neighborhood in New York. When she arrived she was greeted by dozens of students, most of whom were African Americans. On the final day of camp, after a week of learning, the students put on a final performance (表演) for their family and friends. Before the performance, Aesha said she was nervous because the campers were all between 8 and 11 years old. Much to her surprise, it turned out to be perfect. 课时作业(六) 5 Aesha continues to do whatever she can to help kids learn ballet. I'm Li Hua, chairman of the Student Union. I'm here to introduce Liu Yang, a Chinese female astronaut to you. Born in Henan Province on October 6, 1978, Liu Yang is an outstanding woman dedicated to space exploration. In 2012, she became the first Chinese female astronaut to go to space. Two years later, she was admitted to Tsinghua University, where she obtained a doctor's degree in law. In 2022, the space heroine lifted off again on the Shenzhou14 Spaceship, undertaking new missions to construct a space station. Busy as she is, she is a lifelong learner who develops excellent skills in speeches and cooking. 课时作业(六) 24 Liu Yang has always impressed me with her perseverance and passion. She is a role model inspiring me to pursue my dream and make contributions to our country. I hope my introduction will be helpful to you and look forward to exchanging ideas with you. Thank you! My daughter, Grace, came home from first grade in tears. Worried about her, I asked what had happened to her. She was sobbing and said, “I felt so ... so sad that the mean boy Dylan called me names (骂我) again.” I hugged her tightly and comforted her softly. I asked if she had told her teacher about it. Grace nodded and said, “Yes, my teacher punished him seriously and required him to make a sincere apology to me immediately. Although he did that, he's still not polite to me.” 27 Looking at Grace's tearful eyes, I racked my brain, trying to think of a way to help her. Grace were bullied by a sevenyearold boy. In most cases, for young children, bullies may be acting out because they are hurting or feeling that others aren't kind to them. By reaching out and showing them friendship, we have the potential to change their behavior and create a more wonderful environment. I know, as parents, we can't always protect our children from the challenges they face, but we can teach them the value of kindness and encourage them to be a force for good in the world. 28 Then an idea hit me. “Maybe we could be kind to him. We know an old saying that good for good is natural while good for evil is manly. After all, Dylan is not a born bad boy.” I suggested although I wasn't sure if it would make a difference. Grace thought for a while and agreed. From then on, she would say hello to him in the hallway, clap hands for him while Dylan was playing basketball and sometimes helped him with some weak subjects. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to change on Dylan over the next two weeks. Feeling rather disappointed, I was lost in deep thought, trying to find a suitable way to deal with the situation. The other day, Grace's teacher phoned me to praise my daughter because of her kindness. I was curious and asked Grace about it. 29 She explained that during the PE class, they were learning how to play football. Suddenly, Dylan was tripped over. Noticing that, Grace rushed to him, saying anxiously, “Are you OK?” “My leg hurts!” yelled Dylan. His right leg was injured so seriously that he could hardly stand up. Grace supported him with other classmates to the medical room. She tended to him until he felt better. With tears of gratitude rolling down his cheeks, Dylan felt so ashamed of being so rude to her before. 30 The next day, Dylan came to my home with a beautiful gift and said sorry to Grace. He admitted that he had been wrong and thanked Grace for her generosity. It was Grace that helped him know how to get along well with others. From that day on, Grace and Dylan became good friends. They were willing to support each other and spread kindness throughout their school. It is a valuable lesson, showing that kindness is the key to a wonderful world. 32 Looking at Grace's tearful eyes, I racked my brain, trying to think of a way to help her. 伴随状语 伴随状语 小精读 33 第一步: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第二步: __________________________________________________________________ 第三步: __________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 作者的女儿Grace(格蕾丝)在学校被Dylan(迪伦)欺负了,作者让女儿向Dylan表示友好,却没有效果。
