A major Vermeer exhibition opens this month at the Louvre in Paris, whose permanent collection includes his great painting,The Lacemaker (about 1669 - 1670). Like other paintings by Vermeer, this image represents modern culture. So attracted are todays art lovers by Vermeer that it was thought shocking when a recent survey found that 82% of Americans cant name who painted Girl with a Pearl Earring. Vermeer was one more painter among the many who worked for money in the Dutch Republic in the 17th century. He obviously took himself and his art seriously. His selfreferential painting The Art of Painting proves that. Even though he worked all his life in Delft,he painted only 35 known works and left his family poor when he died in 1675 at the age of 43. It is fitting that Paris is celebrating Vermeer, because it was the French avantgarde(先锋派) in the 19th century who saved him from being completely forgotten. Compare his painting Woman in Blue Reading a Letter or The Little Street with Edouard Manets A Bar at the FoliesBergère (1882) or Camille Pissarros The Boulevard Montmartre at Night (1897)and it is easy to see why the art of Vermeer found its natural audience in Parisian Bohemia. All these artists are likely to have known about and admired Vermeer due to the efforts of the critic ThoréBürger,a veteran of the 1848 Revolution. 1. How many paintings produced by Vermeer are mentioned in the text? A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven. 2. What can we know about Vermeer from Paragraph 4? A. He was wellknown when he was alive. B. He gained a good fortune for his family. C. He didnt witness the popularity of his works. D. He considered painting as a way to have fun. 3. Who made a great contribution to introducing Vermeer to other artists? A. Rembrandt. B. His family. C. American art lovers. D. ThoréBürger. 4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Rediscovery of Vermeer B. Anecdotes about Vermeer C. If you think the silent treatment will help you achieve a desirable result, then youre mistaken. 1 Refuse to go into hysterics(歇斯底里) Theres no doubt that hysterics is an extremely effective type of processing mode, but youre not a little child. 2 Pull yourself together and try to reach a compromise against all problems. Avoid deeply offensive words Word is a unique and powerful thing that exerts a big influence on human mind. If youre in a quarrel with your mother, you should be careful what you say to her. 3 Sooner or later, youll apologize for your bad behavior, but the words youve said and the feeling of hate will live in her heart forever. 4 I had a terrible habit of drawing my brother and dad into conflicts between me and my mum. I wanted them to support me and help us find a beneficial solution. Unfortunately, their active participation only worsened the problem. As a result, small and insignificant motherchild fights grew into longlasting family conflicts. I learned a big lesson and realized that my bad temper made my family suffer. Enhance your communication Regular communication with your parents is a normal thing that makes them happier. 5 When you finally find the reason, youll be able to overcome misunderstanding in communication with your mum and bridge the generation gap in a quite short period of time. A. Buy a small gift for your mother. B. Dont draw other family members into a conflict. C. So try your best to comfort your mother after a quarrel. D. You shouldnt burst into tears and scream in front of your mother. E. By all means you should take immediate action to stop this cold war. F. Sometimes your word can be either a perfect pain reliever or a terrible weapon. G. Lack of communication between mothers and children may cause frequent quarrels.  —641— Ⅲ.语法填空 In 1910,Abraham Bank,my great grandfather, didnt want to join the army.
