Patrick Wadge believes an expert education from Peter Scudamore began his way to Conditional Jumps Jockey champion.
Wadge has been well tutored by Scudamore, a former champion jockey (赛马骑师), and the priceless grounding has served him superbly.
The 22-year-old said, “He teaches you to be brave on horses, to trust horses. It’s all rhythm and it’s very simple--the way he describes it to you. You line up, you go forward, you sit where you’re happy, you get the horse to travel and jump and enjoy itself. Then if you’re good enough, you win. If not, you just do your best and that is the easiest way to ride horses.
“I think Scudamore taught me the best way. He’s been tough on me but he’s very good in that he wouldn’t necessarily give you bollockings (臭骂). He’d just teach you, tell you what you’ve done wrong. If he thinks you’ve done something wrong, he tells you. If not, it’s fine. ”
“He’s not actually cruel, he’s just critical. He gives you advice, rather than a bollocking and that’s worked out nicely. It’s nice to know he trusts you. To have him supporting me makes everything so much easier. I suppose I had a very tough start. A lot of rides and no wins. You kind of start doubting yourself.”
“Once you get one or two and you can keep the rhythm going, it just gets better and better. I can’t thank Scudamore enough for the way he has supported and helped me throughout my career. He always gave me chances even when things weren’t going well. I thank him for everything that’s coming my way.”
“Fingers crossed that this is just the start. It’s a hard game. If we stay in one piece and keep going, that’s all I can ask for. I just want to ride as many winners as I can.”
4. What is one of the tricks in horse-riding?
A. Inspiring your horse. B. Rewarding your horse.
C. Believing in your horse. D. Teaching rhythm to your horse.
5. What can we infer about Patrick Wadge from paragraph 5?
A. He received bollockings from his coach.
B He almost lost heart at one point.
C. He felt everything so easy.
D. He met no one who could beat him.
6. What does Patrick Wadge want to express in the last paragraph?
A. His fingers are crossed. B. It is hard to keep going.
C. He is very determined. D. Riding is a piece of cake.
7. How does Patrick Wadge feel about Scudamore?
A. Annoyed. B. Grateful. C. Ignored. D. Generous.
C
How alike are parents and kids? I, for example, am competitive like my dad; my sister got my mother’s sympathy. My husband and his mom, meanwhile, share a lively debating style; it’s why their conversations get so…animated.
It’s an assumption that goes beyond geography: There are “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” equivalents worldwide — mostly tree-related, although I like the Portuguese “a fish’s child knows how to swim”.
And it’s reinforced culturally. There is a proverb that goes like this, “like father, like son”. It feels true, intuitively (直觉地). But the thing is, it’s not. This isn’t news: Psychologists have known for ages that parents and children don’t particularly share the main personality characteristics. It is getting attention now because of a study that tried to change the way this question of family similarity is explored. Rather than participants only self-reporting their personalities, they also chose a third party who knew them well to assess them.
This novel approach suggested more similarities between parents and children approximately 40% rather than the 25% of previous studies. But that is still very low. The study concluded that it was “impossible to accurately predict a child’s personality characteristics from those of their mother or father” and that most relatives are not “much more similar than strangers”. The same study’s findings on the impact of home environment show than “Growing up together does not make people more similar.”
But parents aren’t off the hook. Last year, a study of 9.400 11-to 17-year-olds declared: “Parent personalities have a significant impact on a child’s life.” The detailed results concluded: “Kids with neurotic (神经质的) parents scored relatively low on several measures, including grades, overall health, body mass index…and time spent on leisure activities.”
As one psychologist has put it, the most direct way to weigh nature against nurture (培养) is “to randomly assign children to parents”, but the real challenge is, you can’t double-blind — randomize parenting, if so, we are left tripping up in the dark.
8. How does the author illustrate the universality of the idea that kids are like parents?
A. Through analysis. B. Through proverbs.
C. Through stories. D. Through comparison.
9. What is special about the new study on family similarity?
A. It does more experiments. B. It makes use of other people’s assessments.
C. It adopts the advice of psychologists. D. It explains the participants’ self-reports.
10. What do we know about the result of the novel study?
A. It’s imprecise. B. It’s the same as previous result.
C. It’s persuasive. D. It’s against traditional understanding.
11. What does the writer suggest in the last two paragraphs?
A. Giving advice on parenting. B. Training kids to behave well.
C. Improving kids’ personalities. D. Encouraging kids to learn from their parents.

Researchers in South Korea have created a remarkable first-ever encodable multifunctional material, which can be shifted into different shapes and mechanical properties in real-time.
When compared to biological examples, soft machines tend to fall behind in terms of their ability to adapt to constantly changing surroundings. This is because there are significant limitations with their real-time adjustability, as well as restrictions on the range of their reprogrammable properties. That is, until now.
The new digitally programmable material has multiple remarkable mechanical capabilities, including shape-shifting and memory. The breakthrough may inaugurate a new age of development for fully adaptive soft robots and smart interactive machines.
“We have developed a metamaterial (超材料) that can carry out desired characteristics within minutes, without the need for additional hardware,” Jun Kyu Choe, the first author of the study. said in a statement. “This opens up new possibilities for advanced adaptive materials and the future development of adaptive robots.”
Choe and colleagues demonstrated the material’s potential by way of an “adaptive shock energy absorbing material”, which adjusts its properties in response to sudden impacts. The material was able to limit the risk of damage or injury by minimizing the force transmitted to the protected object. Then the team turned the material into a “force transmission material”, which delivered force at desired locations and times.
By inputting specific digital commands, the material can operate nearby LED switches, which allow precise control over force transmission pathways. The metamaterial is also suitable for a range of existing devices and equipment, as well as artificial intelligence technologies, including deep learning.
“This metamaterial, capable of turning digital information into physical information in real-time, will pave the way for innovative new materials that can learn and adapt to their surroundings,” added Professor Kim, who led the study.
12. What does the new material’s advancement lie in?
A. Its stability in shape. B. Its great adaptability.
C. Its deep learning ability. D. Its efficient programmability.
13. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “inaugurate” in paragraph 3?
A. Bring in. B. Call for. C. Bring back. D. Pass through.
14. What does Jun Kyu Choe think of the new material?
A. Flexible. B. Imperfect. C. Promising. D. Sustainable.
15. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The application of the material. B. The process of the study.
C. The assessment of experts. D. The learning ability of the robots.

Jillian, a junior from West Liberty-Salem High School, is a long-distance runner on the school track team. She has a talent for running, good athletic performance and sportsmanship.
A week earlier, at the state qualifying meet, West Liberty-Salem was running fifth in the 4×800 relay when Jillian took the baton(接力棒)for the last leg. She made a big effort and passed two other runners, guaranteeing a spot in the state championships for her team.
Jillian was so worn out after crossing the finish line that she collapsed, and her excited teammates rushed to her side to help her back to her feet. But then she saw one of the girls she had passed also fall. Jillian immediately went to her and offered a hand up and a few words of encouragement.
“She was in fourth(one spot from qualifying for state)and felt awful,” Jillian said.
At this state championships, Jillian had a challenging 1,600/3,200 double. She won the 1,600in a personal-best 4 minutes,58.31 seconds, stepped onto the podium(领奖台)for photos and medals, talked to the local media, and went to visit her family.
That left her with less than an hour to get ready for the 3200, in which she was seeded seventh.
Three laps into the eight-lap race, Jillian was falling off the pace. Taking part in two events in a row had made her tired. Her mother, Ann, watched from the stands and could tell that her daughter didn’t have the energy to win another title.
“By that time it was a matter of just finishing the race,” Ann said. “I kind of joked with her about being in the last place because she’s never been last. And on every lap she looked at me and smiled.”
Jillian rounded the final turn for home and could see that the only other runner who hadn’t finished yet was faltering(摇晃). And then McMath, a runner Jillian had never met before, fell to the track.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

B. He almost lost heart at one point.
A. Annoyed. B. Grateful. C. Ignored. D. Generous.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. B

【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. A

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“It’s an assumption that goes beyond geography: There are “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” equivalents worldwide — mostly tree-related, although I like the Portuguese “a fish’s child knows how to swim”.(这种想法并不局限于某个特定的地域:世界各地都有类似“有其父必有其子(字面意思:苹果不会落在离树很远的地方)”这样的说法——而且大多和树有关,不过我倒是很喜欢葡萄牙的那句谚语“鱼的孩子天生会游泳”。)”以及第三段“There is a proverb that goes like this, “like father, like son”.(有一句谚语是这样说的:“有其父必有其子。”)”可知,作者通过列举这些谚语来说明世界各地都有类似“孩子像父母” 的说法,以此来阐述这一观念的普遍性。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Rather than participants only self-reporting their personalities, they also chose a third party who knew them well to assess them.(参与者们不仅要自我报告自己的性格,还要选择一个熟悉他们的第三方来对他们进行评估。)”可知,新研究的特别之处在于,参与者不仅要自我报告自己的性格,还需选择熟悉他们的第三方来进行评估,即利用了其他人的评估。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“This novel approach suggested more similarities between parents and children approximately 40% rather than the 25% of previous studies. But that is still very low. The study concluded that it was “impossible to accurately predict a child’s personality characteristics from those of their mother or father” and that most relatives are not “much more similar than strangers”. The same study’s findings on the impact of home environment show than “Growing up together does not make people more similar.”(这种新颖的研究方法表明,父母和孩子之间的相似性大约为40%,而之前的研究结果仅为25%。但这个比例仍然非常低。该研究得出的结论是,“不可能根据父母的性格特征准确预测孩子的性格特征”,而且大多数亲属之间“并不比陌生人更相似”。同一项研究中关于家庭环境影响的研究结果表明,“一起长大并不会让人们变得更相似”。)”可知,新研究结果与传统上认为父母和孩子相似的认知相悖。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“Last year, a study of 9.400 11-to 17-year-olds declared: “Parent personalities have a significant impact on a child’s life.” The detailed results concluded: “Kids with neurotic(神经质的)parents scored relatively low on several measures, including grades, overall health, body mass index…and time spent on leisure activities.”(去年,一项针对9400名11岁至17岁青少年的研究宣称:“父母的性格对孩子的生活有着重大影响。”详细的研究结果总结道:“父母神经质的孩子在几个方面的得分相对较低,包括成绩、整体健康状况、身体质量指数…… 以及用于休闲活动的时间。”)”可知,父母的性格对孩子有重大影响,不良的父母性格会导致孩子在一些方面表现不佳。而文章最后一段“As one psychologist has put it, the most direct way to weigh nature against nurture (培养) is “to randomly assign children to parents”, but the real challenge is, you can’t double-blind — randomize parenting, if so, we are left tripping up in the dark.(正如一位心理学家所说,衡量先天因素和后天培养哪个更重要的最直接方法是“随机地将孩子分配给父母”,但真正的挑战在于,你不能在双盲的情况下——随机安排父母的角色,如果是这样的话,我们就只能在黑暗中摸索了。)”提到衡量先天和后天培养的困难,从侧面反映出父母在养育子女方面需要注意的问题。综合来看,作者在这两段是在暗示关于养育子女的相关建议。故选A。

She bent down, offered her a hand, and said, “Come on, you can do it. Let’s finish this together.” With Jillian’s help, McMath got back on her feet. They jogged side by side towards the finish line. The crowd cheered loudly for their sportsmanship. Jillian could have easily continued and gotten a better individual result, but helping a fellow runner was more important to her.
The two girls met Tuesday morning for an interview with a TV show. They shared their experiences and the moment of that touching act. Jillian said she just did what she thought was right. McMath expressed her gratitude, saying Jillian’s help meant a lot to her. Their story spread widely, inspiring many people.
