The eyes of an artist are special. They can see things others can’t notice and create beautiful art forms from their imagination. In the case of 27-year-old Emily Shifflet, she creates her art literally using only her eyes, as she lives with Rett syndrome, a rare genetic and developmental disorder that limits speech and movement.
“Although Emily lives with a condition that has silenced her, she is still able to communicate and express herself through art, and she is an example that people living with Rett syndrome can have lives filled with purpose and creativity,” said Emily’s mother, Jenny Shifflet. Emily creates her art using a special digital software operated by her eyes called Tobii Dynavox. She was able to learn and practice her painting by using the digital painter software on her communication device.
Meghan Winslow, owner of a family art studio, said, “I love the diversity of the different designs based upon the different painting tools that she can select. It’s an amazing mix of science, technology and art.”
Emily has always been exposed to music and art. Tobii Dynavox has really helped her communicate how she was feeling. The painting tool was truly a game-changer. “Emily could finally use the only muscle she has to be creative,” Jenny said. Jenny noticed the art Emily was creating a few years ago and thought they could make nice gifts. She now sells her one-of-a-kind artwork through her website, Eye Gaze Designs by Emily. “Her artwork is a gift,” Jenny said. “It is showing people that individuals with different abilities can be creative and successful in different ways. That’s what we want to show.”
Emily’s artwork has also appeared in Hershey Medical Center and The Art of Pennsylvania. She also serves as a guest artist at SPLAT-A Family Art Studio in Annville and Hershey, Pennsylvania. She simply continues to shine.
4. What’s special about Emily Shifflet?
A. She is able to paint with her eyes. B. She has trained many artistic talents.
C. She is good at developing digital software. D. She can see herself reflected in artists eyes.
5. What do we know about Tobii Dynavox?
A. It can assist in artistic creation. B. It’s a digital product of a painter.
C. It can perform an eye operation. D. It’s a treatment for Rett syndrome.
6. Why does Jenny sell her daughter’s artwork online?
A. To make it gifts for people in need. B. To raise money for people with disabilities.
C. To inspire people to seek their own success. D. To invite people to take up art creation in life.
7. What does the text indicate?
A. Art originates from life but is higher than life.
B Technology has made our life worth living.
C. The early bird catches the worm.
D. Technology breaks down barriers.

With the year’s end comes the ritual (习惯) of many households and offices: getting new appointment books, planners or calendars to hang on walls or put on desks. In an age of smartphones and the Internet, you might think the days of paper calendars are numbered, but data suggest otherwise. Not only have they survived the digital revolution, but sales of some kinds of print calendars have increased.
The sales of appointment books and planners grew by 10 percent, and decorative and other calendars increased by 8 percent, according to NPD Group, a consumer research firm.
Jerome Hoxton, president of Tru Art Advertising Calendars in Iowa City, said traditional calendars remain popular because they combine visual attractiveness with practical use. Paper and digital calendars can readily coexist. “What we found is that it’s a question of ‘and’,” he said. “It’s not a question of ‘or’.”
Bertel King Jr., a technology writer, made the case for paper calendars in a blog post, noting that he was “flooded with notifications, alerts and messages”. “Having to open another tab, fire up another piece of software, or launch another app to access my calendar amounts to one more on-screen thing competing for my attention,” he wrote. “Suddenly a paper planner starts to make sense.”
It may seem surprising that a print product can thrive (蓬勃发展) in the digital age. But the continued success of some paper calendars mirrors that of printed books, an industry that several years ago was facing what seemed like the very real possibility that e-books would outsell the printed variety. Instead, a few surveys found that most readers still preferred their reading material printed on paper.
Melissa Ralston, ex-Chief Revenue Officer of Koozie Group, said in an email that companies have found paper calendars to be an effective advertising vehicle with a mass market appeal. She said studies have found that 82 percent of clients enjoy getting a calendar as a free gift and 70 percent plan to do business with the company that provided the calendar.
8. What contributes to the popularity of paper calendars in the digital age?
A. The practicality. B. The low price. C. The security. D. The rich design.
9. What was Bertel’s attitude towards paper calendars?
A He disapproved of it. B. He was favorable to it.
C. He was tolerant of it. D. He didn’t care about it.
10. Why does the author mention printed books in paragraph 5?
A. To reveal the attractiveness of them. B. To predict the success of print product.
C. To compare paper calendars with them. D. To illustrate the survival of paper calendars.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Calendar or Not? Up to You! B. Digital Revolution: A New Era
C. Calendar Design Through the Ages D. The Timeless Appeal of Paper Calendars
D
“Publish or perish” has long been the repeated words of academic world. But what happens when the publications are penned not by critical professors but by productive AIs?
Large language models can produce text that mimics (模仿) human writing, raising fears about the integrity of scientific literature. Now, Ahmed Abdeen Hamed, a visiting research fellow at Binghamton University, has developed a groundbreaking algorithm (算法) that might just be the cure-all in the game of academic authenticity.
Hamed’s creation, named xFakeSci, is not just one run-of-the-mill detection tool. It’s a more advanced and complex machine-learning algorithm that can track AI-generated papers with an astonishing accuracy of up to 94%.
In a study published in Scientific Reports, Hamed and his cooperator, Professor Xindong Wu from Hefei University of Technology in China, put xFakeSci through its paces. They created a test bed of 150 fake (虚假的) articles using ChatGPT, evenly distributed across three hot medical topics: AIzheimer’s, cancer, and depression. These AI-generated papers were then set against an equal number of genuine articles on the same subjects.
The algorithm uncovered distinctive patterns that set apart the AI-generated content from human-authored papers. One key difference lies in the use of bigrams — pairs of words that frequently appear together, such as “clinical trials” Surprisingly, the AI-generated papers contained fewer unique bigrams.
“Because ChatGPT is still limited in its knowledge, it tries to convince you by using the most significant words,” Hamed explains. “It is not the job of a scientist to make a convincing argument to you. A real research paper reports honestly about what happened during an experiment and the method used. ChatGPT is about depth on a single point, while real science is about breadth.”
While proud of xFakeSci’s impressive detection rate, Hamed’s quick to point out that “We need to be humble about what we’ve accomplished”, acknowledging that 6 out of 100 fake papers still slip through the net. Looking ahead, Hamed plans to expand xFakeSci’s capabilities beyond medicine, stepping into other scientific fields and even the humanities.
12. Why does Hamed develop the new algorithm?
A. To enhance AI’s capabilities. B. To upgrade writing skills.
C. To discriminate fake articles. D. To detect language mistakes.
13. What does the underlined word “run-of-the-mill” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Odd. B. Backward. C. Effective. D. Ordinary.
14. What feature of AI-generated content does the text highlight?
A. High frequency of using bigrams. B. More focus on hot medical topics.
C. The wide coverage of topics. D. The persuasive tone between the lines.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Hamed is not overly optimistic.
B. Hamed is opposed to AI’s expansion.
C. The xFakeSci algorithm is far from efficient.
D. The xFakeSci algorithm has been tested in other fields.

“Mom, I want that... and that... and that,” insisted a girl who looked about Judy’s age. The girl kept pointing at items on the shelves, and magically, the items appeared in her shopping basket. Judy noticed that whatever the teenage girl pointed at, her mother immediately put it in their basket. Judy hung down her head, and left for the discount section, depressed. Whether by accident or design, Judy and the mother-daughter pair met again by the cashier, and by the time their basket had gone from empty to full. Judy glanced at their basket, which was filled with chips and snacks. She looked at her own basket, where there was next to nothing.
Judy, a high-school senior, was tasked to do the weekly shopping and had to stretch a dollar as much as possible. However, once home, Judy’s mother complained about her, “Why not get the cheapest items? Don’t buy unnecessary things. We aren’t wealthy.” Judy was not a spendthrift (挥霍无度的人), but her mother always urged her not to spend too much. Judy knew her mother was very thin and quite often ill. To support the family, her father took up part-time jobs all the year round. They were not taking proper care of her. Instead of feeling annoyed, Judy quietly resolved never to find herself in such a situation again.
The following week at school, a guest speaker delivered a speech about determination. The speaker made them think and challenged them to take control of their lives. Judy felt very inspired. She remembered one particular line, “Determination leads to success.” She realized she could not change her family’s poor circumstances at the moment, but she could change her own future. This determined mindset made her put forth her best effort in her studies.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】Dear classmates,
I’m glad that our teacher will hold a class meeting, whose theme is construction of class culture. The class meeting can strengthen our bond and boost class unity.
I recommend a “Class History Sharing” activity. In this activity, we can take turns to share our memorable class events and experiences. By doing so, we’ll not only recall the good old days but also deepen our understanding of each other. I hope this activity will make our class a warm family and create an active learning atmosphere.
That’s all. Thank you.

【答案】 With the goal in mind, Judy went into action. She started by creating a strict study schedule, sacrificing leisure time to focus on her textbooks. Every evening after dinner, she would review her notes under the dim light until midnight. During weekends, instead of hanging out with friends, she visited the library to prepare for upcoming exams. Her teachers noticed her dedication and offered extra guidance. Gradually, her grades improved significantly, especially in math and science—subjects she knew could secure her a scholarship.
After entering university, Judy received a call inviting her back to her high school. The principal wanted her to share her success story with current students as an inspirational speaker. Standing at the podium where the guest speaker once motivated her, Judy recounted her journey from hardship to achievement. She emphasized how determination had transformed her life and encouraged others to persevere despite challenges. As she spoke, she spotted her former classmates and even the mother-daughter pair from the supermarket—now listening intently.
