Microplastics (微塑料) are one of the largest environmental problems we face. Most microplastics come from larger pieces of plastic as they break apart (分裂). They do great harm to the environment as well as the health of animals and humans.
However, it is really hard to clean up microplastics. They are small bits of plastic less than 5mm long. Because of their size, they are difficult to clean up. This is especially true for microplastics in the ocean. Besides, they are nearly everywhere. They’ve been found in our oceans, on the top of mountains, in some of the food we eat and even in the stomachs of some ocean animals. What should we do about microplastics?
The good news is that scientists at Sichuan University in southwestern China have made great progress in dealing with microplastics.
A kind of small robotic fish has been invented to help deal with the microplastics in water. They are programmed to make their way through water collecting microplastics as they go. Though these swimmers are only 15 mm long, they can travel very quickly as they clean. Wang Yuyar, a member of Sichuan University’s research team said the robotic fish could be controlled by light. As they swim along, any nearby microplastics get drawn towards them and stick to them.
Another special thing about the robotic fish is that both their shape and the material they are made out of are inspired by ocean life. The team used the material from the inside of shells (贝壳) to make their robotic fish. As well as attracting microplastics the material can even he al itself (自愈) after being cut.
Now that the team has shown that their idea works, they are going to keep working on it. The scientists hope that their tiny fish-shaped robots will be able to help deal with this global problem. They hope in the future they can create new kinds of robotic fish that can work in deeper waters and collect more microplastics.
9. According to Paragraph 2, microplastics are hard to clean up because ________.
A. they are just from larger pieces of plastic
B. they are very small and almost everywhere
C. they can’t be recycled and are bad for the environment
D. they can travel fast to everywhere
10. The scientists hope the new kinds of robotic fish can ________.
A. work faster and faster in the future
B. go to the deeper waters and clean up more microplastics
C. be made with more shells and heal better after being cut
D. work everywhere and solve the global problem completely
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. There is a great way to solve all the environmental problems.
B. Microplastics do great harm to the environment and humans.
C. Small robotic fish will change the world totally.
D. Small robotic fish makes a big step to cleaning up microplastics.

The Silk Road (丝绸之路) is neither an actual road nor a single route (路线). The term instead refers to a network of routes used by traders for more than 1,500 years, which went from China to Eastern Europe. The Silk Road went along the northern borders of China, through India, and Persia and ended up in Eastern Europe near today’s Türkiye and the Mediterranean Sea.
It was called the Silk Road because one of the major traded products was silk cloth from China. Besides silk, the Chinese also exported (出口) tea, salt, sugar, porcelain, and spices. Most of what was traded was expensive luxury goods. This was because it was a long trip and merchants (商人) didn’t have a lot of room for goods. They imported, or bought, goods like cotton, ivory, wool, gold, and silver.
Merchants traveled in large caravans (车队) They would have many guards with them. Traveling in this way helped in defending from bandits (土匪). Camels were popular animals for transport because much of the route was through dry and harsh land.
Although there had been some trade between China and the rest of the world for some time, the silk trade was significantly expanded (发展) by the Han Dynasty. Later, under the rule of the Yuan Dynasty, set up by Kublai Khan of the Mongols, trade from China along the Silk Road would reach its peak. During this time the Mongols controlled a significant portion (部分) of the trade route, enabling Chinese merchants to travel safely.
The Silk Road was important because it helped to generate trade between a number of different kingdoms and empires. This helped for ideas, culture, inventions, and unique products to spread across much of the settled world.
The Silk Road was over 4,000 miles long. There wasn’t just one route, but many routes. Some were shorter, but more dangerous. Others took longer, but were safer.

Microplastics (微塑料) are one of the largest environmental problems we face. Most microplastics come from larger pieces of plastic as they break apart (分裂). They do great harm to the environment as well as the health of animals and humans.
However it is really hard to clean up microplastics.
As well as attracting microplastics, the material can even he al itself (自愈) after being cut.
12. How is the text organized?
A. B. C. D.

The Silk Road (丝绸之路) is neither an actual road nor a single route (路线). The term instead refers to a network of routes used by traders for more than 1500 years, which went from China to Eastern Europe.
Merchants traveled in large caravans (车队). They would have many guards with them.
13. Along the Silk Road, the Chinese traded these goods EXCEPT ________.
A. salt, sugar and tea B. spices and porcelain C. oil, wood and paper D. cotton, ivory and wool
14. The underlined part “in this way” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A. in a big group like a caravan B. by going through the dry land
C. without any guards D. on the back of a camel
15. What’s the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A. The history of the Silk Road. B. The importance of the Silk Road.
C. The reason for being called the Silk Road. D. The interesting facts about the Silk Road.
16. Which of the following can best describe the Silk Road?
A. A trade route between India and Europe.
B. A number of trade routes going between China and Eastern Europe.
C. A short road covered with silk between China and Türkiye.
D. A paved highway used by the ancient Chinese emperors.

Pickleball (匹克球), a relaxing sport that has been around since the 1960s, is becoming popular in China. Young people are growing especially interested in the game.
“Pickleball has been played not only in big cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, but also in smaller cities,” said Zeng Guobiao, director of the China Liaison Office of the International Pickleball Federation (国际匹克球联合会驻中国联络办公室). “Young people in Anhui, Shandong, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Hubei, Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces are also interested in the sport and setting up clubs,” he added.
The sport of pickleball invented in 1965 in the US, is a game in which two or four players hit a wifile-ball (空心棒球) over a net. It looks like tennis but is played on a badminton court (球场). Besides safety, Zhang Xin, who started the Chengdu PANG Pickleball Club, said that, like badminton, the sport of pickleball is fun and competitive (竞技性的). “It’s a sport for anyone, anywhere and anytime,” he said.
Wu Xiaomeng from Chongqing agrees. He happened to learn about pickleball and tried it out with some friends in September, 2022. “It is a game for both men and women, as it requires more skills than physical power (体力),” he said. “It is a good social activity as anyone can easily pick up this sport and play it for fun.
