From Beijing, more than 400 kilometers away, all the way up north, the temperature gradually drops. With the emergence of fire prevention warnings, Saihanba (塞罕坝), known as a “miracle on earth”, begins to come into view. In October, the cold wind blowing from Siberia has dyed (染色) Saihanba golden.
In Mongolian, Saihanba means beautiful high mountains. However, Saihanba was a desert of “yellow sand covering the sky and flying birds without inhabiting trees” 62 years ago. Whenever the north wind blows, the windy sand located in Inner Mongolia will drive southward, reaching Beijing and Tianjin.
After more than half a century of forest plantation, people who have come to Saihanba can hardly imagine the arid (干旱) scene. Occasionally, a gust of wind passes by, and they would just sigh and shout how strong the wind is, but they would not feel sandblasted (喷砂).
On Oct 9, watchmen Liu Jun and Wang Juan were observing the surrounding forest area on a watchtower in Saihanba Forest Farm in Hebei province. Liu is in charge of the observation and Wang keeps recording.
“Spring and autumn are the critical fire prevention periods for our forest farm. We need to stay here for three months, have three meals a day, work and live in the building,” says Liu Jun, who has been engaged in observation for 13 years. Simple as it looks, the job is quite the burden on their shoulders. Only by enjoying loneliness can they keep this forest safe and sound.
Saihanba today is not only a “green Great Wall” for windbreak and sand fixation (固化), but also a timber (林木) source. Many people would doubt why the trees that have grown up here are to be cut down in a planned way. Liu explains that most of the trees here are planted forest, and the forest species are relatively single, unlike natural forests that can adapt on their own and survive the fittest. The selective cutting of plantation forests is more like thinning when farmers plant crops. Only in this way can the nutrient area be expanded and diseased plants also be removed to ensure the healthy development of the forest areas.
4. What can be learned about Saihanba from the first three paragraphs?
A. It is suffering from a cold wind. B. It is weathering a sandstorm.
C. Its desertification is under control. D. Its climate is beyond expectation.
5. Which of the following best describes the watchmen?
A. Bored but attentive. B. Lonely but committed.
C. Tired but engaged. D. Simple but responsible.
6. Why are some trees in Saihanba cut down?
A. To prevent potential fire. B. To study its disease prevention.
C. To promote its biodiversity. D. To ensure its healthy development.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Green Guardian B. The Sand Wasteland
C. The Timber Farm D. The Golden Miracle
C
Livestream through channels such as Amazon Live and QVC is a popular way to sell goods online. In a session that lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by clicking on a link.
Researchers analyzed 99, 451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases.
To determine the emotional expression of the salesperson, researchers used two deep learning models: a face detection model and an emotion classification model. The face detection model discovers the presence or absence of a face in a frame of a video stream. The emotion classifier then determines the probability that a face is exhibiting any of the six basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear or disgust.
We wanted to see the effect of emotions expressed at different times in the sales cases, so we counted probabilities for each emotion for all 62 million frames in our database. We then combined these probabilities with other possible aspects that might drive sales —such as price and product characteristics—to judge the effect of emotions…
We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople convey more negative emotions—such as anger and disgust—the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople display high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise.
A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smile can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer’s expense.
We also found that the negative effects on sales are the strongest when people express emotions in the middle rather than at the beginning or the end of sale. A potential reason for this finding is that the middle is typically when the salesperson offers more details about the product, and it’s likely that viewers are turned off by emotions at this point.
8. What can we know about the livestream selling goods?
A. It challenges the family business.
B. It only helps big company sell goods.
C. It is very convenient for the buyers.
D. It helps the sellers develop fixed expressions.
9. How did the researchers get the findings?
A. By referring to a theory.
B. By concluding different views.
C. By giving some examples.
D. By analyzing previous data.
10. Why do customers dislike seller’s smiles during livestream?
A. They hate seller’s look. B. They prefer complex emotions.
C. They feel cheated. D. They are so tired.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Livestreamers Sell Products Successfully
B. Expressions Affect Selling Products Online
C. Emotions and Faces: What’s the Difference
D. Smiles Can Increase the Sales in Reality
D
Virtually all living things have some way of getting from here to there. Animals may walk, swim, or fly. Plants and their seeds drift (飘) on wind or water or are carried by animals. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that, in time, all species might spread to every place on Earth where favorable conditions occur. Indeed, there are some cosmopolitan species. A good example is the housefly, found almost everywhere on Earth. However, such broad distribution (分布) is the rare exception. Just as wire fences prevent cattle from leaving their grassland, biological barriers prevent the spread of many species.
What forms barriers depends on the species and its method of spread. Some are physical barriers, like waters or mountains for the land animals, and strong currents for aquatic (水生) creatures. Some barriers involve competition with other species. Most places that are suitable for the growth of a newcomer, say a dandelion seedling (蒲公英幼苗), are already occupied by other types of plants that are well adapted to the area. Facing such fierce competition, the chances of survival for the immigrant are slim.
There are also some types of natural pathways through which organisms can overcome barriers. One type is called a corridor. It consists of a single type of habitat that passes through various other types of habitat. North America’s Rocky Mountains is an example. Various types of trees, such as the Engelmann spruce, can be found not only at the northern end of the corridor in Alaska but also at higher altitude along the entire length of this corridor.
Another type of natural pathway is known as a filter route. It consists of a series of habitats that are different from one another but are similar enough to permit organisms to gradually adapt to new conditions as they spread from habitat to habitat. The greatest difference between a corridor and a filter route is that a corridor consists of one type of habitat, while a filter consists of several similar types.
12. What does the underlined word “cosmopolitan” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Worldwide. B. Ordinary. C. Famous. D. Ancient.
13. How does the author explain biological barriers in paragraph 1?
A. By providing examples of them.
B. By describing the forming process of them.
C. By comparing them with a familiar man-made barrier.
D. By explaining how houseflies have been affected by them.
14. What limits the chances of survival for dandelion seedlings?
A. The danger of strong winds. B. The lack of a suitable habitat.
C. Inadaptation to the new areas. D. Competition with native species.
15. What is the essential difference between a corridor and a filter route?
A. The number of habitat categories. B. The speed to adapt to new conditions.
C. The distance from one end to the other. D. The species spread through the routes.

With the widespread use of computers, increasing students type with a greater-than-ever reliance on them to take notes and write papers. ____16____ Some parents of younger students are dismayed that their children are not just encouraged but required to take laptops to class. Additionally, university professors complain of rampant (泛滥的) distraction in classrooms, with students reading and messaging instead of listening to lectures.
A line of research shows the benefits of an “innovation” that predates computers handwriting. ____17____ It helps students recall a random series of words and grasp complicated concepts better. For learning materials by note (死记硬背), from the shapes of letters to the irregularity of English spelling, the benefits of using a pen or pencil lie in how the motor and sensory memory of putting words on paper reinforces that material.
One of the best-demonstrated advantages of handwriting seems to be in superior note-taking. In a study from 2014 by Pam Mueller and Danny Oppenheimer, students typing wrote down almost twice as many words and more passages word for word from lectures. ____18____ However, handwriting — which takes longer for nearly all university-level students — forces note-takers to transform ideas into their own words. ____19____ Those taking notes by hand also allows students to perform better on tests when they are later able to study from their notes.
Many studies have confirmed handwriting’s benefits, and policymakers have taken note. ____20____ In Sweden there is a push for more handwriting books and fewer devices. Although nearly all will eventually need typing skills,in an age of typing, handwriting still matters.
A. Studies have found that handwriting can benefit a lot.
B. This aids conceptual understanding at the moment of writing.
C. But today a different debate is raging about the dangers of typing.
D. However, several schools in America have gone so far to ban most laptops.
E. It suggested they didn’t understand so much as rapidly copying the material.
F. Especially, studies have found that writing on paper can better students’ performance.
G. For instance, about half the states in America have required more teaching of handwriting.

The boys in the block were going to have a roller-skating (滑旱冰) race next Saturday. They were divided into two teams: the Sunnysiders and the Shadysiders, with five boys on each team. Andy was on the Sunnysiders. They lost last year, so they were desperate to win this time. But Andy knew his short legs made it hard for him to skate fast.
One day, Andy was greeted by a pleasant “Hello” as he was putting on his roller-skates. He looked up and saw his new neighbor, Francis. “Hello! ” he replied cheerfully, noticing his neighbor’s long legs. “Wanna skate with me? Look at your long legs! Just the right kind to make you a good skater.” “I’d love to. You know, I’m really good at roller skating and I used to help my team win.” Francis said, his tone now heavy with sadness. “But I lost my roller skates and my mom just cannot afford to buy me another pair.”
Andy thought it was a shame for Francis. As a new comer, there were undoubtedly many moments when he must have felt lonely. Andy thought to himself, wondering what he could do for Francis. But he had to say goodbye in a hurry since the team were meeting in the open space on the corner to talk over some plans.
When talking to the team captain, Andy suggested adding another boy to their team, Francis. But the captain said “No” as the team knew nothing about him. Besides, the Shadysiders wouldn’t let them take on an extra player.
In the following days, Andy practiced very hard with his team. Then came the day before the race when he saw Francis on the sidewalk, watching them skate past, his eyes filled with a sense of loss. Somehow it upset Andy, and his desire to help his new neighbor resurfaced. Then he thought of a way that could not only help his team win, but help Francis fit in.

C 5. B 6. D 7. A
根据第三段“After more than half a century of forest plantation, people who have come to Saihanba can hardly imagine the arid (干旱) scene. Occasionally, a gust of wind passes by, and they would just sigh and shout how strong the wind is, but they would not feel sandblasted (喷砂). (经过半个多世纪的森林种植,来到塞罕坝的人很难想象那里干旱的景象。偶尔,一阵风吹过,他们只是叹息,呼叫着着风有多强,但他们不会感到被喷砂。)”可知,经过半个多世纪的森林种植,狂风吹过时,不会有面部被喷砂的感觉,由此推断沙尘减少,沙漠化得到控制。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段““Spring and autumn are the critical fire prevention periods for our forest farm. We need to stay here for three months, have three meals a day, work and live in the building,” says Liu Jun, who has been engaged in observation for 13 years. Simple as it looks, the job is quite the burden on their shoulders. Only by enjoying loneliness can they keep this forest safe and sound. (“春季和秋季是我们林场防火的关键时期。我们需要在这里呆三个月,每天吃三顿饭,在这里工作和生活,”从事观测工作13年的刘军说。这项工作虽然看起来很简单,但对他们来说却是个不小的负担。只有享受孤独,他们才能保持这片森林的安全。)”可知,守护林场的守望者在林场防火的关键时期需要呆3个月,这项工作简单但任务艰巨,所以这些守望者是孤独但坚定的。故选B。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The selective cutting of plantation forests is more like thinning when farmers plant crops. Only in this way can the nutrient area be expanded and diseased plants also be removed to ensure the healthy development of the forest areas. (对人工林的选择性砍伐更像是农民种植作物时的间伐。只有这样,才能扩大营养面积,也才能清除病株,保证林区的健康发展。)”可知,Saihanba的一些树被砍倒是为了确保其健康发展。故选D。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第二段“In Mongolian, Saihanba means beautiful high mountains. However, Saihanba was a desert of “yellow sand covering the sky and flying birds without inhabiting trees” 62 years ago. (在蒙古语中,塞罕坝的意思是美丽的高山。62年前,塞罕坝是一片“黄沙遮天,鸟飞无树”的沙漠。)”,第三段“After more than half a century of forest plantation, people who have come to Saihanba can hardly imagine the arid (干旱) scene. (经过半个多世纪的森林种植,来到塞罕坝的人很难想象那里干旱的景象。)”可知,文章讲述塞罕坝现已改善了沙漠化,变成美丽的绿洲,塞罕坝是绿色守护者,同时这些护林员也同样是绿色守护者,因此文章最好的标题是“绿色卫士”,一语双关。故选A。
To determine the emotional expression of the salesperson researchers used two deep learning models: a face detection model and an emotion classification model.
B Expressions Affect Selling Products Online
C. Emotions and Faces: What’s the Difference
D. Smiles Can Increase the Sales in Reality
C 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据文章第一段“Viewers can then readily buy it by clicking on a link.(观众可以通过点击链接来购买。)”
根据文章第二段“Researchers analyzed 99, 451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases.(研究人员分析了一个直播销售平台上的99451个销售案例,并将它们与实际销售案例进行了对比。)”
根据文章第五段“We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople convey more negative emotions—such as anger and disgust—the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople display high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise. (我们发现,当销售人员传达更多的负面情绪时——比如愤怒和厌恶——销售额就会下降,这也许并不令人意外。但我们也发现,当销售人员表现出高水平的积极情绪时,比如高兴或惊讶,也会发生类似的事情。)”和第六段“A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smile can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer’s expense.(根据我们的研究,一个可能的解释是,微笑可能很恶心,因为它缺乏真实的感觉,会降低对卖家的信任。销售者的快乐可能被认为是一种迹象,表明销售者正在以顾客的损失为代价获取利益。)”可推断,消费者不喜欢卖家在直播中微笑是因为他们觉得被骗了。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“We also found that the negative effects on sales are the strongest when people express emotions in the middle rather than at the beginning or the end of sale. (我们还发现,当人们在销售过程中表达情绪时,对销售的负面影响最大,而不是在销售开始或结束时。)”内及全文可知,文章主要介绍了网络售货时,主播面部表情对网络销售效果的影响!所以“Expressions Affect Selling Products Online(表情影响网上销售)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选B 。
A 13. C 14. D 15. A
根据划线词后句“A good example is the housefly, found almost everywhere on Earth.(家蝇就是一个很好的例子,地球上几乎到处都有家蝇。)” 故选A。
根据首段尾句“Just as wire fences prevent cattle from leaving their grassland, biological barriers prevent the spread of many species.(就像铁丝栅栏阻止牛群离开草原一样,生物屏障也阻止了许多物种的传播)”可知,作者将生物屏障与铁栅栏做类比。
根据文章第二段“Most places that are suitable for the growth of a newcomer, say a dandelion seedling (蒲公英幼苗), are already occupied by other types of plants that are well adapted to the area. Facing such fierce competition, the chances of survival for the immigrant are slim.(大多数适合新植物生长的地方,比如蒲公英幼苗,已经被其他类型的植物占据了,这些植物很好地适应了该地区。面对如此激烈的竞争,移民生存的机会渺茫。)”可知,大多数适宜蒲公英生长的地方已经被其他物种占据,因此有激烈竞争,这使得新物种存活几率有限。故选D。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一句话“The greatest difference between a corridor and a filter route is that a corridor consists of one type of habitat, while a filter consists of several similar types.(通道和过滤路线的最大区别在于,通道由一种栖息地组成,而过滤路线由几种相似的栖息地组成)”可知,通道和过滤路线的本质区别在于通道只有一种栖息地类型,而过滤路线可能由几种相近的栖息地类型组成,即栖息地的数量分类。故选A。

根据上文的“With the widespread use of computers, increasing students type with a greater-than-ever reliance on them to take notes and write papers.(随着计算机的广泛使用,学生们越来越依赖它们来记笔记和撰写论文)”可知,现在学生们越来越依赖电脑打字,结合后文“Some parents of younger students are dismayed that their children are not just encouraged but required to take laptops to class. Additionally, university professors complain of rampant (泛滥的) distraction in classrooms, with students reading and messaging instead of listening to lectures.
根据上文的“A line of research shows the benefits of an “innovation” that predates computers handwriting.(一系列研究表明,有一种早于计算机的“创新”——手写,具有诸多益处)”可知,研究发现,手写具有诸多好处,结合后文“It helps students recall a random series of words and grasp complicated concepts better. For learning materials by note (死记硬背), from the shapes of letters to the irregularity of English spelling, the benefits of using a pen or pencil lie in how the motor and sensory memory of putting words on paper reinforces that material.
根据上文“One of the best-demonstrated advantages of handwriting seems to be in superior note-taking. In a study from 2014 by Pam Mueller and Danny Oppenheimer, students typing wrote down almost twice as many words and more passages word for word from lectures.
根据上文的“However, handwriting — which takes longer for nearly all university-level students — forces note-takers to transform ideas into their own words.
根据上文“Many studies have confirmed handwriting’s benefits, and policymakers have taken note.(许多研究证实了手写的好处,政策制定者也注意到了这一点)”可知,上文谈到政策制定者们都注意到了手写的好处,结合空后的“In Sweden there is a push for more handwriting books and fewer devices.(在瑞典,有推动增加手写书籍和减少使用设备的趋势)”可知,此处讲述了瑞典推动增加手写书籍和减少使用设备的趋势,由此可推断,此空应是通过举例进一步说明上文的内容,G选项“For instance, about half the states in America have required more teaching of handwriting.(例如,美国大约一半的州要求加强手写教学)”中所涉及的内容与policymakers相关,且与下文讲述的内容吻合,符合语境。

He rushed to Francis, excited to tell him his plan. “Francis, you can use my skates in the race tomorrow! ” Andy yelled, eyes shining with hope. Francis hesitated. Noticing that, Andy explained that having him on their team would not only boost their chances of winning but also help him make more friends. Eventually, Francis put on the roller-skates and skated around, his talent instantly impressing the captain who was nearby. Struck by Francis’ excellent skills, the captain agreed to include the new boy. At that moment, Andy felt a touch of emptiness for giving up his own chance, but a surge of excitement for the plan as well.
The next day, the race began as scheduled. Francis, wearing Andy’s skates, stood at the starting line, looking determined, while Andy, from the sidelines, felt a mix of anticipation and nervousness. The race was intense, but Francis’ excellent skating skills helped the Sunnysiders finally win the race. Once the race was finished, Francis, now part of the team, skated over to Andy with the others. Together, they lifted Andy onto their shoulders, celebrating not just the victory but also the newfound friendships. Cheers filled the air, and Andy experienced a swell of pride and a profound sense of accomplishment for the success of his friend and the team.
