Paris has a fantastic collection of cafes, whether you need a cozy spot or a cup of coffee. Here
are some of the best places I discovered when I was sent to the branch in Paris to cover an event.
Groundstate Cafe
Sitting in the heart of the city,Groundstate Cafe is always recommended by news reporters.
You can easily enjoy a carefree day with a book and a cup of coffee.Groundstate is a popular spot
for artists because of the ancient paintings collected by the shop owner. The waiters are always
ready to help you.
Le Procope
Located on a downtown street,Le Procope is famous for its enthusiastic service and delicious
snacks.Office workers always chat with their friends and have fun with their colleagues. You can
enjoy the fresh air and sunshine because they only have seats outdoors. As a result, the owner only
runs the shop during the warm seasons.
Coutume Cafe
Situated in the city centre,Coutume Cafe is popular among businessmen to meet their clients.
The cafe promotes a life of luxury with fantastic decoration and comfortable chairs.Waiters who
are highly educated and elegant can help visitors choose the right type of coffee.

Five-year-old Willard Wigan couldn't tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9
because of dyslexia,a learning disability.Usually, his mind drifted-to playing outside,to his dog,
or to the ants.Willard was especially curious about those ants.He felt like them, small and
insignificant. He noticed the ants were coming and going from a hole in the dirt.Gathering pieces
of wood,Willard constructed a little building for ants.
At school,Willard still had problems, but he knew he could do something special.Willard
created tiny furniture for the ant houses. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began
to grow.At age nine,Willard began carving()faces on toothpicks. When he showed his mother
the carved faces, she said,"This is what you do well. You must work hard to be the best."Years later,
Willard carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a
full stop at the end of a sentence.
Willard works best at night when there are few disturbances. He often works for months to
complete a sculpture.Willard's favorite paintbrush is one hair from the back of a dead fly!To move
his sculptures,Willard uses an eyelash. But even that can be tough.Once, while moving a
microscopic Alice in Wonderland, his cell phone rang.Terrified,Willard took in a quick breath.

breathed her in!

and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man.But he says,"Success isn't about

An experiment involving hundreds of office workers has found that artificial intelligence(Al)
tools can greatly help but also hurt worker performance.
AI tools designed to operate at human levels have greatly expanded in popularity over the past
year.Such tools are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and
creative work.
This year, researchers at Harvard Business School and other organizations carried out an
experiment. It aimed to test how well Al tools could help workers perform their usual duties,or
tasks. It involved more than 700 business advisors, called consultats ()from
Massachusetts-based Boston Consulting Group.
第3页,3共10页
Harvard Business School recently published results from the experiment in a "working
paper".The main findings suggest that Al tools can greatly improve worker performance. For
example, researchers found that,on average, workers who used AI tools completed 12 percent more
tasks than the users that handled the assigned tasks on their own.Tasks carried out with
help from the Al technology were completed 25 percent faster. And the team found the quality of
work performed by consultants using AI technology increased about 40 percent.
However, the paper also noted areas where the performance of consultants using Al technology
dipped.Of tasks the Al was good at,the experiment showed it "significantly improved human
performance,"the paper said. But for tasks the AI was not right for,"humans relied too much on the
AI,and were more likely to make mistakes."The researchers reported that consultants who used AI
for tasks it was not well equipped for "were 19 percent less likely to produce correct solutions
compared to those without Al."
The team suggests one of the biggest barriers to companies effectively using Al is not knowing
which tasks can be completed best with the technology.Finding this out will require businesses to
carry out thoughtful research and training efforts to find the right mix of AI and human work.
8.What is people's attitude towards Al tools nowadays?
A.Curious.
B.Anxious.
C.Positive.
D.Doubtful.
9.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The total results of the experiment.
B.AI technology taking the place of humans
C.The speed and quality of the task completion.
D.AI tools greatly improving worker performance
10.What does the underlined word "dipped"in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Improved.
B.Dropped.
C.Changed.
D.Disappeared.
11.What does the author want to show in the last paragraph?
A.AI and human work can be better combined.
B.AI technology will be a barrier to companies.
C.Businesses will benefit more from Al tools.
D.Humans should develop new versions of AL.

Who are your best fricnds on campus? Are they the ones you encountered most often in class?
Are they your fellows in drama club or debate society?Something that has to influence whether
pcople become friends is simple physical proximity. And,in fact, the most lasting friendships are
developed between pcople whose paths cross frequently.
A number of studies have demonstrated the effects of proximity on who become friends. One
was conducted at MIT in the 1940s.The incoming students were randomly assigned to 17 ten-unit
apartment buildings that were isolated from other residential areas, and few of them knew one
another beforchand.
The investigators asked each resident to name the three people in the student housing project
with whom they socialized most often. The effect of proximity was striking:two-thirds of those
listed as friends lived in the same building as the respondent, even though those in the same
building represented only 5 percent of the target residents.More striking still was the patter of
friendships within each building.Even though the physical distance between apartments was quite
small--19 feet between the doorways of ncighboring apartments and 89 feet between those at the
ends of each hallway--41 percent of those living in neighboring apartments listed each other as
friends, compared with only 10 percent of those living at opposite ends of the hallway
Proximity leads to friendship because it facilitates chance encounters. If so,then pure physical
distance should matter less than functional distance the influence of an architectural layout to
encourage or discourage contact between people. The MIT study shows just how important
functional distance is.As the following Figure indicates, the stairs are positioned such that upstairs
residents will encounter the occupants of apartments at the turn of the stairs much more often than
the occupants of the middle apartments. And in fact, the residents of the two stair-end apartments
formed twice as many friendships with their upstairs neighbors as those living in the middle
apartments.

friendship because it brings people together.Actually,in later studies involving more diverse
populations, the largest effects of proximity on friendship formation have been found between
people of different races, ages,or social classes.
12.What can be concluded from the MIT study?
A.Friends play an important role in one's daily life
B.Frequency of encounters decides the living distance
C.People with shared interests are more likely to be friends.
D.The more often two people meet, the closer their relationship is.
13.What method did the MIT researchers employ in their study?
A.Case study.B.Recording analysis.C.In-lab observation.
D.Online questionnaire.
14.Which apartment's residents in the Figure above may make most friends in the building?
A.Apartment 1.B.Apartment 2.
C.Apartment 6.
D.Apartment 7.
15.Why did rescarchers carry out later studies?
A.Previous study results are contradictory.
B.Previous study methods lack scientific support.
C.The sample in the previous study is not representative.
D.The data in the previous study are not up-to-date enough.
