I, an energetic boy, grew up as a nature lover in Dalton, Massachusetts, America. Upon graduating and earning my degree, I simply tried to settle in a place where I could work with wildlife. I really love working with water birds. I had known of such birds for quite a few years. Thankfully, this job opened up. Now, I just work with birds all the time. The birds that we see down here in the Florida Keys are fish-eating birds, most of which are wetland birds.
Together with my partners, I work in a non-profit organization. We often take in injured wild animals and look after them until they are fit to be set free. I cannot tell what supplies I will need, so I plan to gather different kinds of things ahead of time. Our organization has two different sites. The hospital location is where we receive injured birds. They really don’t have anyone on their side except us. My purpose, I think, is to try to be the best protector I can be for the birds that come through.
We received a cormorant (鸬鹚) a few days ago. He was admitted to our hospital site and was very thin. He was too tired to stand very well. One of the possibilities that we wanted to rule out was the case of injury from fishing waste. We needed to take an X-ray to examine him, yet the bird would struggle violently whenever we tried to carry out the test.
Every year, we meet many hurt birds whose injuries are caused by fishing-related objects. A large number of these painful wounds are connected with fish remains. Such harmful situations happen frequently around us, and all these harms result directly from human activities. It reminds us that we should try our best to reduce such dangers to wild-living birds.
24. What can be inferred about the author’s present job?
A. It agrees with his hobby. B. It is very unfamiliar to him.
C. It is beyond his expectations. D. It centers on animal research.
25. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 2?
A. He is honest. B. He is outgoing.

26. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. An examination on a dead bird.
B. A case of saving an injured bird.
C. Various causes of wild birds’ injuries.
D. Ways to avoid harm to fish-eating birds.
27. What does the author remind us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Keep away from wild-living birds. B. Study fishing-related bird injuries.
C. Deal with all harmful fish remains. D. Reduce humans’ effects on the birds.

We humans spend about one-third of our lives asleep. This may sound like a lot of time, but it is not wasted. Sleep helps us stay healthy, and it also helps our brains remember. Our brains need good sleep to remember what we do and learn during the other two thirds of our lives when we are awake. Besides keeping us healthy, a new study shows that a good night’s sleep helps to make us become cleverer.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin have found that sleep helps improve brain performance by making synapses (突触) smaller in the brain. A synapse is the area where cells pass messages to other cells.
Scientist Chiara Cirelli is a lead researcher at the school’s Center for Sleep and Consciousness. “Sleep is when the human brain combines information it has learned while awake with its stored knowledge. However, the brain forgets unimportant details. This forgetting is important. It makes room for new learning and new memories,” Chiara said.
Chiara said that the research began with this hypothesis (假设): We sleep so that our brains can rejuvenate themselves. In other words, sleep gives our brains a chance to come alive again. She thinks the idea seems simple and reasonable. However, testing and discovering how the brain works has been extremely difficult.
The Mayo Clinic is a respected research hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. It gives the following advice on getting a good night’s sleep. Stay on schedule. Pay attention to what you eat and drink. Don’t go to bed on an empty or too-full stomach. And avoid coffee before bed. Create a calm, restful sleep environment. Make your room as cool, quiet, and dark as possible. Limit daytime sleep. Exercise during the day. Manage your worries. Try to calm any worry or concern you may have before going to bed. You can write them down so that they move out of your head and onto paper. You can spend some minutes getting organized for the next day. Or you can try some deep thinking and breathing to calm your brain.
28. What does the new research focus on?
A. The basic functions of human brains.
B. The causes of people’s sleep problems.
C. The connection between the brain and sleep.
D. The ways to improve sleep and brain performance.
29. Why does the brain forget unimportant details during sleep according to Chiara?
A. To ensure it has a good rest.
B. To pass more messages to its cells.
C. To leave space for new information.
D. To help to repair itself more quickly.
30. What does the underlined word “rejuvenate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Refuse. B. Repeat. C. Recognize. D. Refresh.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To provide background. B. To give a warning.
C. To introduce research findings. D. To make suggestions.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere in our life. For example, you may have seen AI-created pictures of friends — how they will look in 20 years or how they appear as heroic characters. In fact, an AI chatting robot (chatbot) is a tool to access generative (生成的) AI, and using it feels like having a conversation with someone.
When you ask an AI chatbot a question or let it finish a task, it analyzes (分析) millions of data it has stored to give the reply you want. You can even ask it to speak in chatty, funny, or serious styles. Some popular AI chatbots can act as assistants, helping with many tasks — from organizing your to-do list and planning holidays to writing speeches.
Using an AI chatbot is not difficult: You just need to create an account and follow the guidelines from your school or employer. However, there are important things to note. First, its answers may sound reasonable, but they are not always true. It may give wrong or even dangerous advice. So you must check its information with reliable sources. Second, never share private or sensitive information with it, because your input helps train the AI and may be stored by technology companies forever. Besides, AI chatbots can also be used for cheating. Cheaters may use AI to copy someone’s voice to trick you into sending money. AI-generated texts are usually too perfect without human spelling mistakes, and false house-rental information online may also be created. To stay safe, you should check sources, think about the context, double-check information, and keep up with the latest AI cheating methods.
AI chatbots are useful tools, but they are not perfect. Critical (批判性的) thinking is your best choice when you’re using them in an age where seeing or hearing is no longer always believing.
32. Why are AI-created pictures of friends mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To present AI’s popularity. B. To present AI’s imagination.
C. To praise AI’s predictive ability. D. To praise AI’s conversation function.
33. What does the author show about AI chatbots in paragraph 2?
A. Their hidden risks. B. Their simple styles.
C. Their different uses. D. Their confusing questions.
34. How does the author explain the safety problem of AI chatbots in paragraph 3?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By making comparisons.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. What Are AI Chatbots Exactly?
B. Why Are AI Chatbots Cheating Tools?
C. How Can AI Chatbots Check Information?
D. When Will AI Chatbots Replace Human Talks?

Cold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air. However, in a new study, researchers show that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. 36
Many people think running in the winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and strong winds. 37 That can be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your body’s dehydration (脱水) levels are lower than in hot weather.
38 One way in which we lose extra heat during exercise is by sweating. The body loses heat through drops of sweat. That heat builds up in the body and can be really damaging unless you can lose it.
The body does not have to work as hard to pump blood to the skin’s surface. 39 Serious runners could cut valuable seconds off their personal best times by choosing to run in winter.
The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keeping as dry as possible is most important when exercising in low temperatures. Wear gloves that cover your four fingers together and the thumb separately. The ground can be slippery (滑的) in winter. 40 And especially, wear more than one layer of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin.
All in all, if you are a runner, don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. When fully equipped, you can start running in the low temperatures.
A. Wearing comfortable clothes is important.
B. So wear shoes that will keep you from falling.
C. Every movement that runners make produces heat.
D. You should keep your body from sweating too much.
E. That means running in cold temperatures requires less energy.
F. Yet many runners may find it easier than running in hot weather.
G. They say running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance.
