Learning a New Skill While Traveling
Combining learning a new skill with the adventure of travel could be very good for you. All you need to do is choose a location that offers you the skill you want to acquire. Here are four of the many exciting vacation learning opportunities you can explore around the globe.
Take a Cooking Vacation
Have you been in love with French cooking? According to The International Kitchen, the best foodie vacation includes cooking classes and food tastings. You can even meet with a local chef at a market to purchase ingredients to learn how to make your favorite dish. You can also go to cooking schools. The class size is small and there are trips to local markets to source ingredients before learning how to cook the specialties of the region you visit.
Learn How to Climb Rocks
If you are physically fit and up to a challenge, you can learn rock climbing in the Appalachian Mountains through Outward Bound, a program that offers young people expeditions throughout the US. The courses that are designed to teach self-reliance along with new skills run for one to two weeks.
Acquire a New Language
Did you ever dream of speaking Spanish? There are language immersion classes that can accelerate language acquisition. From one-week classes to full semesters, there are experiences for everyone. Go World Travel magazine recommends going off the beaten path and taking a study vacation in Costa Rica, Patagonia, or the Galapagos.
Immerse Yourself in History
Do you dig history? Then participating in an archaeological dig might be the best learning vacation for you. Learn how to excavate (挖掘), clean , and identify objects from real excavations. Many universities run digs during the summer in countries in Europe, the US, and the Middle East. You can also volunteer to work on an excavation any time of the year with the Israel Antiquities Authority. You must be at least 18 and physically fit.
1. What is a key feature of the cooking vacation?
A. Learning rock climbing skills. B. Taking language immersion classes.
C. Participating in archaeological digs. D. Learning how to cook regional specialties.
2. How long does a rock-climbing program last?
A. 7-14 days. B. 18 days. C. A month. D. A term.
3. Which qualification must a volunteer have to participate in excavation work?
A. Being a healthy adult. B. Being fluent in Spanish.
C. Having climbing experience. D. Having a knowledge of archaeology.

In the leafy Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey lies a very different kind of farm: the astonishing Funny Farm, a not-for-profit animal shelter open to the public two days a week, created by New Jersey’s own Doctor Doolittle, Laurie Zaleski.
Every animal here is a rescue — abused, abandoned, disabled — and Zaleski has healed and protected more than 600 animals over the last 20 years, from retired racehorses to raucous roosters. “We have 115 roosters,” she said.
In Zaleski’s eyes, Funny Farm is a perfect place, especially for animals. And it is the same with people. When you walk through the gates, you can feel the inner peace and harmony, because they all get along here.
As she writes in her book Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals, “there are lessons here for our polarized, at-each-others-throat society, because the creatures on the Funny Farm live in harmony, no matter how different they are. It’s not quite the fairy tale of the lion lying down with the lamb, but as friendships go, this bond between Emily the emu(鹋) and a goose named Airplane (because of her wounded wings) is pretty jaw-dropping.”
Zookeepers often place orphaned babies with mothers of another species who are nursing. And when animals meet when they’re young, anything is possible. Even with an animal that’s blind, another animal may kind of turn into a seeing-eye dog and protect that animal, and show where the food is, and just be the bodyguard, be the helper.
“I think you see this in cage so often, because these animals are taken care of, they’re not competing for food and they’re not stressed. And so, they have this luxury of being able to be social with other animals,” said Zaleski.
4. What do we know about animals on the Funny Farm?
A. They need help.
B. They are retired.
C. They are funny.
D. They enjoy good health.
5. How will a person feel when he enters Funny Farm?
A. Absurd and strange.
B. Peaceful and harmonious.
C. Confident and proud.
D. Stressed and sympathetic.
6. What may have happened to Airplane?
A. She saved a lamb.
B. She dropped her jaws.
C. She crashed herself.
D. She had her wings hurt.
7. How do animals on the Funny Farm get along?
A. By fighting with each other.
B. By competing for food.
C. By socializing with each other.
D. By playing tricks on each other.

When she first came to Britain as a refugee (难民) from Nigeria six years ago, Kemi had a three-month-old daughter, a room in a shared house and £5.39 to survive on each day. Finding money for new clothes was out of the question.
After four years, Kemi was granted (给与) refugee status and secured her first job interview — unsurprisingly, she had nothing to wear. However, she was referred to a small social enterprise called Give Your Best, which asked her her size and what kind of clothes she liked. “And they gave me three beautiful shirts. Those clothes were like gold to me. They asked me what I actually wanted. That makes you feel valued.”
The initiative was launched by Sol Escobar, who had spent several years volunteering at refugee camps in northern France. A friend put her in contact with a household of refugee women who couldn’t access any clothing. Escobar realised she had surplus (剩余) clothes she could donate, and appealed to her friends and networks for help. She was flooded with offers, but didn’t want to overload the women with potentially improper clothing. “So I thought, if I take photos of all of these items and put them on an Instagram page, they can all choose the things that they actually want.”
Eighteen months later, Give Your Best has processed almost 11,000 items of clothing, and has more than 800 refugee women approved to “shop” for free on its virtual shopfront. It is aiming for much more, however. Having reached the very limit of donations and requests it could handle through Instagram, the enterprise has just launched a new digital platform that will allow it to hugely upscale.
Like the hugely successful clothing resale app, clothes are photographed and uploaded to Give Your Best, where customers select those they like and donors then post the item. Crucially, however, no money changes hands.
As well as giving choice to its users and minimising fashion waste, Escobar says one consequence has been the small but intimate (亲密的) connections established between donor and shopper. Many donors choose to include a supportive note and a small gift — hugely welcomed by recipients (接受者), but also a reminder that “on the other side of your package, there’s a woman who is your size and has your fashion sense, because she’s shopping from your wardrobe (衣橱)”.
8. What’s the purpose of the enterprise?
A. To offer job training to refugees.
B. To provide childcare for refugees.
C To give refugees dignity of choice.
D. To strengthen refugees’ social position.
9. What does paragraph 3 focus on?
A. How the enterprise survived.
B. How the enterprise advertised.
C. How the enterprise was named.
D. How the enterprise was initiated.
10. What do we learn about the enterprise from the text?
A. It is warmly received.
B. It is difficult to operate.
C. It makes huge profits.
D. It needs to be more creative.
11. What does the enterprise bring to its donors and recipients?
A. Enjoyable shopping experience.
B. A sense of social responsibility.
C. Close interpersonal relationship.
D. A good insight into fashion trend.
D
We all know cacti (仙人掌) store water — but to survive, they also adjust their flower positions to gain more sunlight or shade, and so much more. Scientists have been copying the resilient plants’ methods to help engineer our future.
One of the most exciting advancements involves Copiapoa a genus of cacti with at least 32 species found in the coastal Atacama Desert, the driest nonpolar desert on Earth. These cacti, typically five to six inches wide, can form gray-green bushes that spread out over an area otherwise empty of vegetation.
Documented by many scientists, Copiapoas probably survive by “drinking” the salty fog that sweeps in from the sea every morning, as well as the dew — tiny bits of water — that forms on their spines (尖刺) and skin. This has inspired researcher Tegwen Malik from Swansea University to think about whether the dew-colleting process might be reproduced in metal structures.
Specifically, Malik took a close look at the one-and-a-quarter-inch spines of Copiapoas and found that their surface has a series of tiny channels that broaden at the base. “This creates a surface roughness that enables dewdrops to move along them even against gravity,” she says.
Starting in 2013, she set out to re-create that structure by engineering a flat metal reproduction of the stems and spines of the Copiapoa, which she began testing under a series of different temperatures and humidities. After several years of experiments — testing indoor and outdoor conditions, and with various cooling methods — she finally got it to work. In 2023, Malik published a study showing that the irregular surface was 8 percent more efficient at harvesting dew than a flat sheet used as a baseline.
Malik imagines desert homes with water-collecting features to provide clean water in dry regions. “The easiest way could be to place dew-harvesting surfaces on roofs, but you could also have these structures in tents in the desert,” she says. “We truly have hidden treasures in the Copiapoa, and we are only just learning some of their secrets.”
12. What does the underlined word “resilient” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Highly adaptable to different soils. B. Able to grow quickly and efficiently
C. Resistant to diseases and harmful insects. D. Capable of surviving difficult conditions
13. What drove Tegwen Malik to study Copiapoas?
A. Their metal-like surface. B. Their mechanism to gather water.
C. Their typical appearance D. Their ability to form water drops.
14. What was the main focus of Malik’s experiment with the Copiapoa?
A. Recreating a flat metal copy of it B. Testing if its metal copy would work
C. Seeing how it survives various climates. D. Finding the most efficient cooling method for it.
15. How may Malik’s metal structure be applied?
A. To secure water supply in dry areas. B. To clean salty water in desert homes.
C. To enable desert explorers to travel light. D. To improve ways to discover hidden treasures.

The Unexpected Help
It was a cold gloomy afternoon in early November. Mia, a 17-year-old high school student, was rushing to catch the last bus home after a long day at school. Her mind was preoccupied with a challenging math test she had just completed. The wind was biting, and the sky had been threatening rain all day. She had forgotten her umbrella at home, and now, as she stood at the bus stop, she could feel the first drops of rain falling, chilling her skin.
Mia sighed, pulling her jacket tighter around her body. The cold made her shiver, and she wished she had remembered to bring the umbrella. Her parents were both working late, and she didn’t have enough money for a taxi. The thought of walking home in this weather made her feel miserable. The last thing she wanted was to get soaked and catch a cold. She glanced down at her phone, but the bus app showed no sign of the bus arriving anytime soon.
As she waited, her mind wandered back to the pressures of school. She had been struggling with her grades recently, and the thought of facing another disappointed look from her parents made her stomach churn. Just as the rain began to fall more heavily, a car pulled up beside her. The window rolled down, and a man in his early thirties, dressed in a business suit, called out to her. “Excuse me, are you waiting for the bus?”
Mia looked up, surprised by the sudden question. She hadn’t expected anyone to speak to her, especially not a stranger. She nodded cautiously. “Yes, I am.”
The man smiled kindly, noticing her discomfort: “It looks like it’s going to rain heavily. I’m heading in the same direction. Would you like a ride to the next bus stop? It’s not safe to stand out here in this weather.”
Mia hesitated. She had always been taught to be careful with strangers, but the man seemed genuinely concerned, and the rain was coming down harder. After a brief pause, she nodded. “Okay, thank you.”

1.续写词数应为150左右;

The man unlocked the passenger door, and Mia quickly climbed inside. The warmth of the car hit her immediately, chasing away the cold. She thanked the man again, still a bit nervous. The man introduced himself as Mr. Johnson and started chatting casually, asking about her school day. Mia gradually relaxed, sharing her struggles with the math test. Mr. Johnson listened attentively, offering words of encouragement. His kind voice and friendly manner made her feel at ease.
Before she knew it, they had reached the next bus stop. Mia was reluctant to leave. She thanked Mr. Johnson sincerely, her eyes shining with gratitude. Mr. Johnson smiled, saying he was glad he could help. As Mia got off the car, she felt a new sense of warmth. This unexpected kindness from a stranger had not only saved her from the rain but also lifted her spirits. She watched as the car drove away, determined to pass on this kindness someday.
