Wisdom teeth removal is common for many people in their late teens and early 20s. But why dont they come in during childhood with the rest of our permanent teeth?
The answer comes down to child development. Theres not enough room in a childs jaw for wisdom teeth. 1 So theres more room for wisdom teeth to emerge.
However, many modern human jaws dont grow long enough for wisdom teeth to come in. Ancient humans ate diets full of hard nuts, uncooked vegetables, and other tough foods. 2 But nowadays we have shifted to eating softer foods, meaning humans have shorter jaws than ancient humans do.
There is another reason wisdom teeth grow in later. 3 When ancient people would lose their molars (臼齿) from chewing tough food, wisdom teeth — the third set of molars — would take their place. But because most people dont lose their molars as young children, wisdom teeth wait until adulthood to arrive. 4
Nowadays, dentists often remove wisdom teeth because their emergence can cause pain in crowded mouths. Or it can cause problems and tooth damage later on. 5 But as a person gets older and their gums (牙龈) become weaker, their wisdom teeth may stick through. In this case, they tend to cause pain and need removing.
A.Children have small jaws.
B.Theyre not needed until then.
C.But as a kid grows, their jaw grows too.
D.Following this diet actually makes the jaw grow longer.
E.Most people have 32 teeth, including four wisdom teeth.
F.In other words, your wisdom teeth are programmed to erupt as a backup.
G.Not all wisdom teeth pop through the gums during the late teens and early 20s.

An A for Mrs. Bartlett
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth⁃grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well⁃rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missys name was called. So Im in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group:“Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina. ” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group— the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits
There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the “ good ” group.
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett.
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits.

1.C 上文“The answer comes down to child development. Theres not enough room in a childs jaw for wisdom teeth.(答案归结为儿童成长。儿童的下颌位置不够长智齿。)”提到儿童下颌太小,没有空间,C项的But是关键词,与上文是转折关系,即虽然儿童下颌空间小,但是“随着儿童的成长,下颌也会继续发育”,引出下文“So theres more room for wisdom teeth to emerge.(所以就会有更多的空间长出智齿。)”,下颌继续发育,就会有更多的空间长智齿了,所以C项符合题意。故选C。
2.D 上文“Ancient humans ate diets full of hard nuts, uncooked vegetables, and other tough foods.(古人的饮食中包含着坚果、生蔬菜和其他坚硬的食物。)”讲的是古人的饮食结构,D项的this diet指代了古人的这种饮食结构,D项的“makes the jaw grow longer”则点明古人的饮食结构使得他们的下颌长得更长,符合题意,下文的But则形成转折:“But nowadays we have shifted to eating softer foods, meaning humans have shorter jaws than ancient humans do.(但是,如今我们的饮食结构转为食用更软的食物,这就意味着现代人比古人的下颌更短。)”
3.B 上文“There is another reason wisdom teeth grow in later.”(智齿长得晚还有另一个原因。) 是它的具体原因,符合题意,下文则是对这个原因的解释:“When ancient people would lose their molars (臼齿) from chewing tough food, wisdom teeth — the third set of molars— would take their place.(当古人因咀嚼坚硬的食物而失去臼齿时,智齿——第三组臼齿——将取代他们的位置。)”
4.F 上文“When ancient people would lose their molars (臼齿) from chewing tough food, wisdom teeth — the third set of molars — would take their place. But because most people dont lose their molars as young children, wisdom teeth wait until adulthood to arrive.(当古人因咀嚼坚硬的食物而失去臼齿时,智齿——第三组臼齿——将取代他们的位置。但是由于大多数人在小时候臼齿不会脱落,所以智齿会在成年后才长出来。)”具体解释智齿长得晚的原因,即小时候臼齿还没有脱落,长大后臼齿脱落了,就会长出智齿替代臼齿。设空处的内容是以另一说法来重申上文所解释的原因,F项“In other words, your wisdom teeth are programmed to erupt as a backup. (换句话说,你的智齿被设定为备用。)”的backup是关键词,意为“备份”,指的是智齿其实是备用臼齿,取代已脱落的臼齿,是上文所讲内容的另一说法,符合题意。故选F。
5.G 上文“Or it can cause problems and tooth damage later on.(或者它可能会在以后引发问题,导致牙齿受损。)” 首先说明智齿不一定都在年轻时长出来,下文的But体现出与前者的转折关系,“But as a person gets older and their gums (牙龈) become weaker, their wisdom teeth may stick through. In this case, they tend to cause pain and need removing.(但是随着年岁增长,牙龈老化变弱时,智齿还是有可能会突出来,仍然会造成疼痛并且需要拔掉。)”

Dear Peter,
How are you doing? To make our class more productive, Id like to voice my ideas.
Ive noticed that many of us are hesitant to speak up, probably due to fear of making mistakes. To approach this, I strongly recommend organizing group discussions and role⁃play activities, where the relaxed atmosphere will inspire more active participation and motivate us to speak confidently. Additionally, our vocabulary and grammar exercises could be more engaging. Interactive games, like word puzzles and grammar challenges, would make our learning fun and memorable. Such activities can foster a sense of competition and teamwork, contributing to a more dynamic and interactive learning environment.
Please take my tips into consideration at your convenience. Hopefully, they will be of great help.
Yours,
Li Hua

I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Before I opened my mouth, she gently placed a hand on my shoulder, saying with a knowing smile, “ I know what you want, but your group needs you. ” So stunned was I that I couldnt utter a single word for a moment. She had seen something in me that I hadnt seen. Suddenly, a mixture of guilt as well as pride seized me. The power of being trusted made me stand straighter. “ Ill help them. ” I replied in a firm voice. I couldnt believe it came out of my mouth, but it did.
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. The project was going smoothly with our joint efforts. Besides, I found out Mauro was struggling with English, Juliette wore long skirts because of her religion and Rachel dreamed to be a fashion designer. They werent misfits, just people that no one cared enough about to try to understand — except Mrs. Bartlett. I was lucky to be given a chance to see other people in a new light. Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment, which should be handed back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.
