Music and Behavior (行为)
Where did you go yesterday? Did you hear music at any of those places? Today most stores and restaurants play music. You might even hear music in an office or on a farm. Scientists believe that music changes the way people behave.
According to some scientists, the sound of Western classical music makes people feel richer. When a restaurant plays classical music, people usually spend more money on food and drinks. When the restaurant plays modern music, people spend less money. Without background music, people spend even less. Scientists also believe that loud, fast music makes people cat faster. It’s interesting that people would like to chew (咀嚼) their food faster when the music gets faster. Some restaurants play fast music during busy hours. This gets people to eat faster and leave more quickly. In this way, restaurants can make more money.
Some scientists think that music makes students think and learn better. They say that music helps students to be more active. It is true that students learn better when they are relaxed and listening to music can help them relax.
The next time you hear music somewhere, be careful. It might change the way you behave.
1.Do scientists believe that music changes the way people behave?
2.How do people feel when they listen to the classical music?
3.What kind of music do restaurant play to make more money?
4.Why can music make students learn better?

When Wang Qi was a young adult, he used to be crazy about almost all kinds of music with his friends. But three years ago, when he was using the Internet, he found a song full of the feeling of missing the motherland. It made Wang Qi think of his hometown and the people there. He came to realize how much he actually cared about them all. Ever since then, he has been a fan of Chinese folk (民间的) music.
Folk music is a traditional kind of music in China. Many areas have their own unique styles (独特的风格). Many songs nowadays are about modern life in China, such as looking for dreams and the challenges of city life, but not about the strong traditions. However, folk music takes us back to the “good old days” when people were simple and truthful to one another. It reminds us that the best things in life are true feelings, friends, family, and the beauty of nature and the countryside.
Wang Qi hasn’t been to those famous places where folk music appeared yet, but it is his dream to go there one day. He has already read a lot about them and done some research. Asking people to a party is an art. You must think about what kind of party you’re going to have first. If it is a small party, you can just give a call to your friends to invite them to the party. You can even e-mail them or just leave a message for them.
Now, calling someone is an art, too. First, give a call to your friends, and then begin the talk by asking them about their life and family. Then ask them about their schedules (日程表) on the day of the party. If they say they are free, you can ask them to the party directly (直接地). If they are not free, then ask him to try to find time for your party.
If you’re going to have a big party, and need to ask lots of people to your party, you must decide how many people you want at your party. Then you can write a list of them and send them beautiful invitation cards, because you may not have so much time to give them a call each. You must send the cards a few days before the party so that they can have enough time to prepare for it.
1.The ways that you can use to invite friends if you’re having a small party. (列举两项,10个词以内)
2.How do you begin the talk when you give a call to your friends? (10 个词以内)
3.What can you send to your friends if you have a big party? (5 个词以内)
4.What time should you send invitation cards? (8个词以内)

With the development of the technology, people’s life has changed greatly. In the past, connecting (联络) with friends meant spending time with them in person (亲自). Today, most young people like to connect with their friends online better. They think it is a good way to keep in touch with (与……保持联系) their friends. However, experts worry many young people are so busy connecting with friends online that they may lose their real-world friendships (友谊).
Technology hurts friendships. When we communicate with our friends in front of a screen, it’s easier to misread their tones (语调) or body languages. We might think friends are smiling while they’re actually upset. A friend might send a text message as a joke that says, “You’re the worst friend!” But our feelings might be hurt because we think he’s serious.
—Andy
Technology doesn’t hurt friendships. In fact, it can make them stronger. My best friends live in California where I used to live. The last time I met them in person was three years ago. But I talk to them online every week. It feels like they’re right there with me. Without technology, there wouldn’t be close friends anymore.
—Anna
According to experts, staying connected online is not enough to build true friendships. Spending time together face-to-face is also important when people are in trouble. During the hard times, people don’t need someone who likes their pictures or posts. What they really need is someone who can offer them help.
1.What does the study (研究) in Picture 1 show?
2.According to Andy, what problem might people meet when communicating with their friends online?
3.How long didn’t Anna meet her friends in California in person?
4.Please finish the chart above.
5.What’s the purpose (目的) of the passage?
6.Do you like to connect with your friends online or in person? Why?

Lucy comes to America to study. She finds the body language of Americans is different from that in her county. Let’s have a look!
In America, personal space is very important. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away, so they are not facing each other directly(直接地). They will not get comfortable when a person stands too close. Americans like to look at the other person in their eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are not happy, or are not interested in what he is talking about. And if you look up and down at someone, it is not polite, either.
For Americans, thumbs-up(竖拇指) means yes, very good or well done; thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, people put one hand above the head. It is all right to point at things but not people with the hand and index finger(食指). Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold(责备) them and touch them on the heads when they admire(赞赏) them.
Learning body language is sometimes difficult. If you don’t know what to do, the best thing to do is smiling.
1.What does the underlined word “that” refer to(指代) in Para.1?
2.How far do Americans usually stand when they talk to each other?
3.What does thumbs-up mean for Americans?
4.In which body part do Americans touch when they admire children?
5.What is the best thing to do if you don’t know what to do about body language?

The power of music
No one could say that Katy Perry is an ordinary artist. Her songs are not just about sweet romance and heartbreaks, but usually have bigger and more empowering themes. Take the songs Firework (2010) and Roar (2013) for example, where Perry sings about being our own master and discovering our true value.
But actually, these themes are not daring enough, at least not for Perry. Earlier this year, she announced her new album Witness, together with a new idea for pop music. Perry calls her new style “purposeful pop”, meaning pop with a social and political message. It seems that Perry has become tired of simply encouraging people. Now, she wants to educate them politically as well.
Part of her inspiration came during the 2016 US presidential election between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. Perry was a very public supporter of Clinton because Trump was a candidate with a record of disrespectful behavior toward women.
The best example of Perry’s purposeful pop is probably the song Chained to the Rhythm, in which Perry criticizes people’s obsession with their own ideas and the fact they are unwilling to think more critically about the world. As the song’s lyrics say, “Aren’t you lonely? Up there in utopia. Where nothing will ever be enough. Happily numb. So comfortable, we’re living in a bubble, bubble. So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble.”
Even though the election is long over and Trump won, Perry’s political message seems to be continuing.
But when it comes to the concept of purposeful pop, it is, in fact, something a lot of pop stars have been doing for a while. Beyonce’s 2016 song Formation, for example, deals with various social problems such as the dispute between white policemen and black citizens in the US, hoping to create change through music.
“Formation isn’t just about police brutality—it’s about the entirety of the black experience in America in 2016, which includes standards of beauty, disempowerment, culture and the shared parts of our history,” wrote Jenna Wortham in The New York Times.
To singers like Perry and Beyonce, songs are not just entertainment, but part of a movement. It may have seemed strange when this concept was first introduced, but it’s on its way to becoming normal.
“The truth is, not speaking up in 2017 means you’re part of the problem. It’s no longer OK to be quiet and complacent,” wrote Shannon Carlin on entertainment news website Bustle.

I bought a “new” car for myself. It was actually a used (second-hand) car. I spent around $6000 on it. My old car was still in good condition (状态). A dealership (经销商) would take it for $1,500.
I have a co-worker (同事). He is a great worker. He is struggling (挣扎) to get by and has been looking at used cars. So I asked him how much he was looking to spend on a car. He was looking to spend $300 to $500. So I told him I’d sell my old one for $300.
My mom, who I work with, asked if I had any luck selling my car. I told her I planned (计划) on selling it to our co-worker for $300.

Two years ago, Tim’s parents died in a car accident. Even since then, his elder brother and he have had to work part-time to make a living. He has been working as a part-time waiter in a restaurant for six months, and now he’s just got his salary.
He was walking back to school and saw the notice board in the hall. There was a notice asking for donations (捐赠) for the earthquake. Amanda, a girl from a very wealthy family, was reading the same notice.
“Aren’t you going to donate?” Tim asked, “People there must be having a really hard time. All their houses have been destroyed by the earthquake. They’ve got nothing left, no place to live, nothing to eat or...”
“Sorry, I don’t have money to spend on that!” she laughed. “I have 10 new dresses to buy. I need to get a new phone. And then I’m planning to fly to Paris for the weekend.” With these words, she walked away.
Tim took the money from his pocket and walked to Mrs Tawreen’s office.
“Excuse me, madam,” he said. “I don’t have too much for a donation, just 300 yuan. Could I just donate this?”
Mrs Tawreen smiled, “Wow, 300 yuan, my dear? Well, I have to tell you that, of all the donations we’ve received from our students so far, it’s the largest amount. And yes, you may donate right now.”

The proper greeting(问候)will make customers(顾客)feel welcome. Knowing how to greet can help your work succeed.
Smile when you greet your customers. You want your customers to feel welcome, and that starts with your body language. Smile, and walk to them in a right way. Everything you do should show “I’m glad you’re here!”.
Remember what customers prefer(更喜欢). It is good to remember customers’ likes and dislikes. If you work at a clothes store, remembering a customer’s favorite color will make her feel like you care about her. This is a great way to let customers come again.
Show customers to the thing they want. Don’t just tell them where to look for what they want. They will thank you if you lead them to get the thing they want.
Give space after the greeting if necessary. Usually, greet an arriving customer as soon as you see her. However, if her face looks like “don’t talk to me, leave me alone”, you’d better give her space. But let her know she can find you if she needs help.
