When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome.
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes—changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused. Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
1.What made the writer check the phone more often than before?
2.When did the writer start noticing his changes?
3.What does the writer plan to do with his phone after the experiment?

Schoolwork is becoming more and more difficult for students now. Recently, some new rules (规定) have been made to make them have a happy school life.
These new rules are made for schools in Jiangsu province. They include some parts. For example, teachers of primary and junior high schools can’t reveal(公布) students’ test scores. They should use letters like A and B to grade students’ test results.
Because of COVID-19, students spent a long holiday at home. After the new term started, some schools might give more homework or classes to students. But the new rules ask schools not to do that. At the same time, students should have music, sports and art classes as usual.
People have different ideas about the new rules. Yin Fei, a college professor, says some students are not good at studying, but they can do well in other things. So it is good to cancel(取消) scores. But Peng Ming, a teacher in Nanjing, worries about that. He thinks scores are still important. Students need to get high scores to enter good colleges and parents care about their children’s scores. So the new rules are not so good for them.

Foreigners join in the joy of Xishuangbanna’s Water Splashing Festival

The more water people splash (泼,溅) on you, the luckier and happier you will be—this festival brings smiles and good luck to everyone who takes part. Foreign visitors also enjoy the celebrations, making the festival a truly international event.
Melissa Baidak, a visitor from Russia, was surprised when people started splashing water on her. At first, she was a little scared, but soon she joined in and had a lot of fun. “It reminded (使想起) me of my childhood,” she said with a smile.
Melissa is a doctoral student at Beijing Foreign Studies University. During her visit to Xishuangbanna, she wore a traditional Dai dress and tried many local foods. They celebrate the festival as their new year with activities like water splashing, releasing (放) lanterns, and dragon boat races.

Many people find ghosts and death scary, but some countries have festivals to celebrate these things.
In China, the Zhongyuan Festival, or the Ghost Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar. On this day, families light lanterns to guide the spirits of the dead back home. However, people often avoid going out at night during the festival, fearing that ghosts might harm them.
Both the Zhongyuan Festival and the Qingming Festival honour the dead, but they are different. During the Zhongyuan Festival, all spirits are remembered, while the Qingming Festival is only for honouring one’s own ancestors. People believe spirits return home during the Ghost Festival, but not during the Qingming Festival.
In Chinese culture, death is seen as a serious thing. However, in other cultures, death is sometimes viewed differently.
In the United States, Halloween is a time to remember the dead, but it’s also a fun celebration with costumes and trick-or-treating. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a time to connect with the dead through dolls and stories, and there are even parties.
Whether we like it or not, death is a part of life. Understanding it can help us cherish our time and live our best lives.

4.Would you like to follow the writer’s example? Why or why not?

So I can’t live without it.
