[2022-2023 湖南省长沙市长郡中学高二上月考]Poetry can be a source of distraction,of beauty,of
truth. It can guide us when it gets difficult to manage the intensity of what we're feeling. So it's no surprise
that people sought out poetry for comfort this past year.
Overall, visits from readers to a poetry website went up thirty percent during the pandemic."So
many people have reached out wanting to discuss how much more poetry has meant to them this year, or
how suddenly poetry has meant something to them," says award-winning poet Naomi Shihab Nye, a
teacher. All year, she says people have been asking her for advice on what poems to read or what poetry
platforms to choose.
It wasn't just the pandemic. This vear saw an extraordinary economic trauma that we had all been
experiencing. And poetry is an art form that has always been a resource in times of crisis. "A lot of
people, especially in healthcare, haven't known where to put their sorrow because there's been too much
and there's been no time to navigate it," she says
Suzanne Olhmann, a nurse, who says she talks about poetry with her patients almost every day
shares the poem Kindness by Naomi with them, as well as with other healthcare workers."Naomi's poem
really helps us understand that vou can think of sorrow as a two-sided coin and on the other side of it is
kindness,"she says.
Poet James Crews says that one reason why poetry has provided comfort this year is that it's a
powerful medium for working through changes. "A lot of poems are read during funerals, weddings.
graduations, and huge transitions in our lives," he says."And I feel that we're all turning to poetry as a
way of capturing and naming this huge transition that we're all going through together right now. We need
poems to remind us why the world is worth saving and also how we can take better care of ourselves."
That is how poetry gives us hope each and every day. And even once the pandemic is over, poems
will be here for us, holding space for relief and escape.
1. What can we infer from what Naomi said?
A. Poems need to be discussed and analvzed
B. More people are interested in poetry today.
C. People don't understand the meaning of poems.
D. Too many people ask for advice on writing poems.
2. What does the underlined word "trauma" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. An unpleasant thing.
B. An unexpected result.
C. An impossible change.
D. An insignificant challenge.
3. Why does the author give the example of Suzanne Olhmann?
A. To show the kindness of the nurse.
B. To prove the comforting role of poems.
C. To show the current popularity of poetry.
D. To prove the good relationship between nurses and patients.

Exploring poetry
I was in my twenties and making my way in New York. That's when life got serious and broke my heart.
A teacher who later became a dear friend introduced me to Edna St. Vincent Millay (ESvM), the
famous poet who lived in Manhattan at the turn of the 2Oth century. One of my favorite possessions is a
valuable first-edition copy of ESVM's short poetry collection. A Few Fig from Thistles was a gift from this
friend who was old enough to be my mother at the time. She told me the first "fig" described how I was
living my life-"My candle burns at both ends. /It will not last the night ;/ But ah, my foes, and oh, my
friends-it gives a lovely night."
I was struggling to make ends meet but always made the time for fun bv hanging out with friends.
Some of them of course were careless with my heart but I could always find comfort and courage in
ESVM's wise words.
Rather than bore my friends. I could fall into my sorrow-whether it hit me-cry as much as I wanted
in my bedroom. I found everything I needed in those 32 pages-hope, wisdom and encouragement. In the
years since, I've found myself attracted to poetry whenever someone caused me pain.
Is it actually possible for something as common as a poem to save a life? I'm not certain of that but
I can prove the power of words. Like a relaxing walk outside, poetry can provide a healthy distraction and
a meaningful change in perspective.
Like music, poetry speaks a universal language of thvthm and speaks truths in a language that
describes emotions. So why not keep interested in poems?

B. She bought ESVM's short poetry collection to the author

3. How does the author probably tend to deal with her pain now?
A. By losing herself in poetry.
B. By hanging out with friends.
C. By staving in the bedroom.
D. By taking a relaxing walk outside.
4. What's the purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce a poet the author likes best
B. To tell a story about the author and poetry.

关键词 read a poem, approach
[2021-2022 江苏省常州市金坛区质量调研高一下期末]The first time you start to read a poem, you
must relax and read through it without concentrating on its meaning. Imagine you are meeting a person for
the first time. You will just observe him and listen to his voice, as well as watch his shape or movements.
but you have not yet known what he is all about. Likewise, you may enjoy the sound, rhythms or
wording, and form some first impressions about a poem.
In your second reading, you should concentrate more on the general meaning of the poem. This time
you will want to compare your feelings about the poem by now with how you felt before. Are they the
same? What is different and why?
Your third reading will focus more on details: the words, phrases or images. Looking up any
unfamiliar words in a dictionary so that vou can gain a more accurate understanding. Using the example
given above about meeting someone, his image will change gradually and slightly as you meet and learm
more about him. Therefore, in your additional readings, it is a good idea to compare your understanding
each time with the understanding before.
A helpful approach to further understanding a poem is to summarize it in your own words. Compare
your version of understanding with those of others reading the same poem, and listen to how they form
such opinions. Remember, however, that there is no exact or right meaning for a poem, as most poets
have admitted they themselves are not exactly sure what they meant when writing certain lines or phrases;
they have even been heard to say on occasion that sometimes words just seem to"drop from heaven" and
land on the page. That is what awakening the imagination is all about. If you are lucky, and if you
practice enough, magical things may happen when you write and you may be able to produce a beautiful
poem or other work of art vourself.
5. Why does the author give the example of "meeting a person"?
A. To arouse readers' interest in reading poems.
B. To support his argument about reading poems.
C. To advise poem readers to be relaxed.
D. To make his point easier to understand
6. What will vou gain from the third reading of a poem?
A. General meaning.
B. Rhvthm beauty.
C. Deeper meaning.
D. Poetic structure.
7. What does the underlined word "That" refer to?
A. Poets themselves don't understand their poems.
B. Beautiful poems drop from heaven occasionally.
C. Poetic meanings are open to different explanations.
D. Writing a summary helps understand a poem.
