B Playing video games is not usually an outdoor activity, but gaming and nature aren't unrelated. Some of the games are filled with beautiful scenes of nature, like the blue flax flowers in the fantasy game Guild Wars 2 which were inspired by real-life plants. "We have found video games and nature are well connected,"said video gamers Hannah Young and Aleks Atanasovski, who loved nature."Then we came up with a way to allow game enthusiasts to grow the plants they love in their favorite games." The result was an official collaboration between Guild Wars and SeedSaga."It's the partnership using the gamers'love of getting rewards from their favorite game and having the opportunity to grow something in the real world like they would do in the game,Young said. SeedSaga is a botanical pilot, the first of its kind, which allows the players of Guild Wars to apply for seed packs featuring the artistic forms from the game."The skills that you have in the gaming world-like watering virtual gardens-can be applied in the real world,"Young said. The first campaign was limited with only 30 seed packages that went out in April 2024."Because games are inspired by real-life plants, there are a large number of plants in the game that are exactly the same as those in nature,"Atanasovski said."The applications poured in and most applicants had to wait for next time.If only we had made one thousand bags of seed packages. "On social media, what many people are talking about is not the games themselves, like the missions they're doing, but spotting the landscapes and appreciating them just like they do if they are on a hike in the real world," said Young."The things people talk about are so similar to what they might see in a forest or something really amazing in nature.I think our initiative is not just a matter of gamers having seed packages. We want to remind them that in nature they can have the same feeling and the surprise they get in games. 【高三3月质量检测·英语第3页(共8页)】 24.What inspired Young and Atanasovski to put forward the initiative? A.Observing Real-life Plants Online B.Exploring Nature in Various Games C.Turning Video Gamers into Gardeners D.Separating Gaming from the Real World C Birds may dominate the skies when it comes to long-distance travel, but they're not the only masters.A few bat species also migrate()thousands of kilometers across continents in North America,Europe and Africa. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior recently studied 71 bats during their spring migration across Europe, offering some insights. The team tracked common noctules,a bat that is widespread in Europe and one of only four bat species known to migrate across the continent.Every spring for three years, the scientists attached tracking devices to common noctules in Switzerland, focusing exclusively on females which are more migratory than males.Females spend summers in northern Europe and winters in a range of southerly locations. The study's tracking devices weigh just 5%of a bat's body and feature multiple sensors to measure activity levels and air temperature.Unlike conventional trackers requiring close distance to get data back, these devices turn 1,440 daily sensor readings into a message. The data is communicated through a novel long-range network, allowing real-time monitoring from anywhere in Europe. The scientists analyzed the data and found the bats could cover almost 400 kilometers in a single night."On certain nights,we saw an explosion of departures that looked like bat fireworks,"says Edward Hurme,a researcher. They found that these migration waves could be explained by changes in weather.Bats left on nights when air pressure dropped and temperature went up;in other words, the bats left before incoming storms."They were riding storm fronts, using the support of warm tailwinds, says Hurme. The bats used less energy flying on these nights of warm wind, confirming that they were harvesting invisible energy from the environment to power their continental flights. “Migratory bats are threatened by human activity, particularly wind turbines(涡轮机),which are the cause of frequent collisions().Knowing when and how bats will be migrating could help to prevent deaths, says Hurme."We can assist wind farms in turning off their turbines on nights when bats are streaming through. This is just a small part of what we will find if we all keep working to open that black box. 28.What can we learn about the research team? A.They carefully selected research targets. B.They tracked both male and female bats. C.They were the first to find common noctules. D.They mainly worked with local bird watchers. 29.What advantage do the tracking devices have over traditional ones? A.They don't have to rely on the network. B.They are as light as the bats in weight. C.They make remote monitoring possible. D.They measure activity levels with sensors. 30.How can the noctule bats benefit from flying on stormy nights? A.Escape extreme hot weather. B.Save energy during long flights. C.Fit into another bat community. D.Lead the way for their followers. 【高三3月质量检测·英语第4页(共8页)】 31.What does Hurme emphasize in the last paragraph? A.Challenges faced by researchers. B.Threats from bats'odd behavior. C.The finding of the data analysis. D.The significance of the research. 0 Urban zoning is an issue on which most Americans often find common ground:they don't like it.They oppose the undue regulations and restrictions on what can be built in certain zones. Often held up as a hero in this game is the city of Houston,Texas, famous for not having zoning. However, as Sara Bronin explains in her new book Key to the City, that's not the full picture. In Houston, some ordinances ()for example, establish building lines, parking requirements, and minimum lot sizes, all commonly found in zoning laws. The historic preservation ordinance also requires some properties to pass a design review,a process sometimes required by zoning procedures.Technically, these ordinances are not zoning, but the role played by zoning is just filled. But for the city as a whole, the lack of zoning means a lighter governmental touch, allowing Houston to grow much more rapidly than other cities and address the housing needs of its expanding population. Bronin also mentions Hartford,Connecticut. At the beginning of the twentieth century,Hartford ranked as one of the richest cities in the country. The insurance industry, innovative manufacturers like Elizabeth Colt and Albert Pope, and famous literary figures like Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe gave the city an economic boost and cultural appeal."Of all the beautiful towns I'm fortunate to see, this is the chief,"Twain commented upon his first visit to Hartford."You do not know what beauty is if you have not been here." Nobody would say that about Hartford now."Connecticut's capital is now one of the poorest cities in the country,"writes Bronin.Hartford's strict zoning laws, particularly those from the mid-20th century, have hindered its development.Too many parking requirements and other regulations have replaced historic homes and green spaces with asphalt lots(沥青地段),making it nearly impossible to rebuild the townhomes and apartments that once defined the city. Bronin recognizes that zoning ruined Hartford, but she still believes in its potential to create beautiful cities. She calls for zoning laws that prioritize nature and flexibility, aiming to balance regulation with the need for affordable and sustainable urban development. 32.What is the situation in Houston,Texas? A.It is slow in economic development. B.It is well-known for its formal zoning. C.It is under strict governmental control. D.It is subject to zoning-like restrictions. 33.Why is Mark Twain mentioned in paragraph 4? A.To praise Hartford's current modern structures. B.To compare two cities'main cultural attractions. C.To highlight the positive impact of strict zoning. D.To prove Hartford's appeal in the early 20th century. 34.What does the underlined word "hindered"in paragraph 5 probably mean? A.Predicted. B.Sustained. C.Prevented. D.Enhanced. 35.What is Bronin's opinion on zoning? A.It should be banned. B.It requires perfecting. C.It remains eco-friendly. D.It proves cost-saving. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Empathy,or understanding the thoughts and feelings of the people around you, inspires you to help others and live a happier life.Stanford psychology professor Jamil Zaki,PhD has recommended four exercises to help you build empathy. 【高三3月质量检测·英语第5页(共8页)】 ·36 Think about something you're struggling with. Then imagine a friend coming to you with the same problem. 37:you'd treat your friend most likely with patience and forgiveness and you'd react to yourself perhaps with blame and self-criticism."Empathy has to start from within,"points out Dr.Zaki."You can't just give of yourself emotionally until there's nothing left,By understanding yourself, you can increase your capacity for empathy..” Spend kindness on others. Invest something in some small way-whether it's time, energy or money-on someone in your life. These acts include picking up your partner's favorite coffee or carrying an older neighbor's groceries upstairs.38. The little things that we do each day also count,"says Dr.Zaki."Performing these tiny acts can be energizing and enlivening.” Disagree without dislike. 39.Share your story of how you came to form your opinion and then listen to how they arrived at theirs. The point of this exercise is to show you that it's possible to disagree with another person without disliking them or seeing them as the enemy.Dr.Zaki reports,"Those who do this exercise often find that empathy always means understanding." Praise empathy in others. We tend to speak highly of others'achievements.40.For this exercise, take a moment to praise the people whenever they show empathy."The more we can recognize others'empathy and encourage it in others, the more we'll be contributing to building our own empathy,"says Dr.Zaki.
