A year back I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off. My mom had spent a lot in my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, joined different clubs, and graduated with honors.
I was so excited to start a new life. I had totally packed two weeks and wanted to go to college at once before it was time to leave.
Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn’t like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep.
I was so homesick (想家) and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies and I applied for a lot of jobs. In any remaining free time, I started forcing myself to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think how lonely I felt.
Soon after, I began to limit food, and then I became worse. Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor weighed me, I was crazy about the number of my weight. So I continued to lower my goal, and convinced that controlling this number was the solution to my homesickness. But when I was told that I had no choice but to spend time on my studies. I quickly started recovery in my mind.
How could I do? I told myself that school was what I was best at. I decided to get rid of my homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed by at last and I had gotten straight A’s. That’s why I want to share my story—to help other students feel less lonely.
24. How was the author during the two weeks before she left for the college?
A. She was as normal as before.
B. She couldn’t wait to leave for the college.
C. She was afraid to leave her home.
D. She didn’t enjoy her mother’s company.
25. What is the author’s problem at the beginning of studying in the university?
A. Her weight. B. Her diet.
C. Her homesickness. D. Her bad study habit.
26. Which can best replace the underlined phrase “distract myself” in paragraph 2?
A. achieve my dream B. earn money by myself
C. improve my studies D. take my attention away
27. What is the main purpose of the author in writing the text?
A. To look back at her past middle school life.
B. To help girls to lose weight.
C. To help lonely college students.
D. To increase her own confidence.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. C

Children at boarding school get the best night’s sleep because of strict lights out time, according to a recent study, which was presented at Sleep Down Under, the 33rd yearly scientific meeting of the Australasian Sleep Association. Professor Kurt Lushington, a psychologist who led the study; said, “It is a naturalistic experiment showing the key to good sleep in teenagers is quite simple: a good timetable and no mobile devices (设备) at night.”
Over the past 20 years, the time children spend sleeping has fallen and only half regularly get more than seven hours. The recommended amount is eight to ten. The biggest problems are smartphones and tablets (平板电脑) whose blue light wakes the brain, making it harder to drop off.
An Australian team compared sleep patterns ( 方 式 ) of 15 to 18-year-olds at a school in Adelaide. The 59 boarders had to leave their phones in a kitchen area or on their desk before bed and turn their lights out by a set time. They slept-for an average 8 hour 26 minutes a night compared with 7 hours 46 minutes for day pupils.
Lack ( 缺 少 ) of sleep affects mental health and school performance ( 表 现 ) and causes behavioural problems. It has also been connected with the child obesity epidemic and other diseases. This year an American study found that teenager who didn’t get enough sleep took in extra sugar during a school year. They ate sweets, cakes, chocolate and biscuits and drank, fizzy drinks to promote their energy levels.
Lushingon recommends that parents reach agreement on not using a phone. This is most likely to work if they do likewise and offer other enjoyments, such as books. “I think if you put these rules in place, kids will go along with them,” he told New Scientist.
28. What is the secret to teenagers’ good sleep according to paragraph 1?
A. Strict lights out time.
B. More physical exercise at school.
C. Good bedtime plan and more playtime.
D. Regular schedule and no mobile devices.
29. What does the underlined phrase “drop off ” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Fall asleep. B. Fall behind. C. Give up. D. Calm down.
30. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. Bad effects for lack of sleep.
B. Bad examples of school performance.
C. The relationship between diseases and sleep.
D. Behavioral problems caused by bad eating habits.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Say no to mobile devices
B. Choose proper sleep patterns
C. The more you sleep, the healthier you’ll get
D. For a goodnight’s sleep, try boarding school rules
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. A 31. D

The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Preserve, located near India western tip, is the proud — and only — home of the Asiatic lion. By the early 1900s, however, their populations had decreased for homo loss and hunting, leaving fewer than 50 known individuals alive. Though their numbers have risen over the past several decades — climbing to around 670 in 2020, a successful story — the lions are still considered endangered.
One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions’ future is to track them, a hard work. Some animals, like tigers and zebras, have special coat patterns (图案) that provide useful marks to the researchers. But for the Asiatic lions, researchers must look elsewhere.
In 2019, Banerjee, who worked for Indias National Tiger Conservation Authority, developed an AI system to recognize the lions with high accuracy (精准). The AI program, SIMBA, has been applied in practice. “It will be a fantastic tool for long-term lion monitoring,” says Banerjee. He adds, “It could help forest officials arrive at a more accurate estimate (评估) of Gir’s lion population. In a few years, the group will have a rich collection of information — how many lions are male, female, how many will bear babies and how many are dead.”

【答案】36. G 37. F 38. B 39. C 40. A
【解析】
【分析】本文是说明文。主要讲述了成功的要素。
【36题详解】
根据第二段提到的“The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic(乐观的).(你必须记住的第一件事是,为了成功,你必须乐观)”和第四段提到的“Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity(有创造力)(帮助人们成功的另一个品质是创造力)”可知,下文说到了成功需要乐观和有创造力,论述了成功所需要的品质,即如何成功,结合上文“Some people succeed, while others may not.( 有些人成功了,而另一些人可能不成功。)”可推断承接上文提到的success,此处引出下文的成功的要素,G项中的“this”指代上文的“some people succeed”,且G项中的“some…,others…”结构与上文一致,“qualities”引出下文对成功品质的解释。故选G。
【37题详解】
下文“If you do not have an aim, then you will not be motivated to work hard and put your performance under the microscope to make sure that every detail is right.( 如果你没有目标,那么你就不会有动力去努力工作,不能把你的表现放在显微镜下,以确保每一个细节都是正确的)”说明你需要有一个目标,然后就会被激励去付诸努力。F项中的“motivation”与下文的“motivate”一致,说明你也需要有一个清晰的目标,因为动力是成功的关键要素之一。故选F。
【38题详解】
下文“They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones.( 他们可能会有一点创造力,但最成功的人是最有创造力的人。)”可知,后一句的they肯定是指代前文出现过的人,并且后面说的是最成功的人是最有创造力的。B项中的“some successful people”相符,想想你身边的成功人士,然后引出下文。故选B。
【39题详解】
下文“It will help you learn about how other people have achieved success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about people like Bill Gates and Jerry Yang.( 它将帮助你了解其他人是如何取得成功的。如果你想学习如何建立一个成功的企业,你应该读一些关于比尔盖茨和杰瑞杨这样的人的书。)”说明你应该读书,说明阅读也是成功的另一要素。故选C。
【40题详解】
上文“Practise every day at whatever career you are in, and by doing so, you will see yourself, your business and your self-confidence begin to grow.( 无论你从事什么职业,每天都要练习,这样你就会看到你自己、你的事业和你的自信开始增长。)”说明无论你从事什么工作都要自信,A项中“trust yourself”和“confidently”与上文的“self-confidence”一致。因此推断选A项“如果你相信自己,并且自信地做自己想做的事,你的同事将会很愉快地与你工作。”符合语境。故选A。

There was no sign that the earthquake was coming.
A 7.8 magnitude (震级) quake almost flattened the city, killing over thousands of lives in less than a few minutes.
In the midst of destruction and chaos, a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son Daniel was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the upsetting shock, he remembered the promise he had made to Daniel: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. He looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school. Everything looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to concentrate on where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stones and bricks.
As he was digging, other anxious parents arrived, heartbroken, shouting desperately: “Mary!” “Sam!”
Some other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” “Come on! There’s nothing you can do here!” “You’re just going to make things worse!”
To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?”
And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone.
Some firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, and explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Just go home!” To which this loving, determined father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”
The fire chief replied, “You’re angry and worried. I get it. But you are not helping by staying here. Just go home. We will help you find your son!” To which he replied, “But I promised my son I’ll always be there for him.”

“I’m fine. There are 13 other kids down here, Dad,” Daniel replied. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Courageously, he went alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” He dug for hours and hours. His hands were mushy and he could only see well in flashes. Right before he was about to pass out, he pulled back a large rounded rock and heard his son’s voice. He screamed his son’s name, “DANIEL!” A response came from below, “Dad? It’s me, Dad!” This must be the most beautiful voice he’s ever heard in his whole life! “What’s going on in there? How is it?” the father asked anxiously.
“I’m fine. There are 13 other kids down here, Dad,” Daniel replied. “We’re scared, hungry, and thirsty. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle and saved us.” The father realized that this was a tricky situation. He couldn’t risk causing another collapse down there. Fortunately, the firefighters were just nearby. The father shouted to the fire chief and signalled to them to come over. Then, the father helped the firefighters cautiously remove the rocks and pulled out the kids one by one. When everyone was safe and sound, Daniel threw himself into his father’s arms: “You did it, Dad! No matter what, I know you’ll be there for me!”

C Good bedtime plan and more playtime.
D. Regular schedule and no mobile devices.

A. Fall asleep. B. Fall behind. C. Give up. D. Calm down.
30. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. Bad effects for lack of sleep.
B. Bad examples of school performance.
C. The relationship between diseases and sleep.
D. Behavioral problems caused by bad eating habits.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Say no to mobile devices
B. Choose proper sleep patterns
C. The more you sleep, the healthier you’ll get
D. For a goodnight’s sleep, try boarding school rules

Despite the advantages, Baneijee also adds his worries. He suggests certain rules be made to prevent main information from being stolen. “Where tools like SIMBA really shine”, he says, “is in helping researchers develop monitoring plans that are keys to the protection of at-risk animals,” he says, “otherwise, all your efforts will be in vain.”
32. What is the greatest difficulty in protecting Asiatic lions?
A. Stopping them from being killed. B. Keeping track of them.
C. Protecting their living environment. D. Increasing their population.
33. How does SIMBA help researchers?
A. By locating lions’ homes. B. By tracking other animals.
C. By monitoring the animal stealers. D. By providing accurate information.
34 What’s Baneijee’s opinion about the AI program?
A. It needs to be widely used. B. It has saved the at-risk animals.
C. Its possible risks should be aware of. D. Its disadvantages should be ignored.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Application of AI on Protecting Animals. B. The AI Program for the Endangered Asiatic Lions.
C. The Measures of Protecting Asiatic Lions. D. The Biggest Challenge of the AI system.
