B Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume(消耗) rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to(往往,倾向于) stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.     According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed(挤出) between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.    After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.    In spite of(尽管) all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or  extreme overweight — among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject(拒绝) older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing. 24. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola? A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently. B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities. C. They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyles. D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food. 25. This text is mainly the relationship between _________. A. Americans and the French B. life style and obesity C. children and adults D. fast food and overweight 26. The text is mainly developed __________. A. by contrast (对比) B. by space C. by process(变化过程) D. by classification(分类) 27. Where does this text probably come from? A. A TV interview B. A food advertisement C. A health report D. A book review(书评) C It’s a too long story — 17 months to be exact — with an ending that’s short and sweet. Ruthie has, finally and happily, been reunited with her family. The story goes back to October, 2005. Ruthie, 8 months old, was sitting on the back seat of the family car when her owner walked hurriedly into a Long Island store. When Nancy Noel returned a few minutes later, Ruthie was nowhere in sight. Nancy Noel and her husband, Lincoln Werden, got in touch with Nassau County police, put up flyers (小传单) around their Manhasset neighborhood. But no sightings of Ruthie were reported. Until last week, that is, someone sent Ruthie to a Manhattan shelter after finding her walking slowly around the Bronx — 25 miles from where she was taken on that fateful October day. And then, shelter workers searched Ruthie for a possible microchip (微芯片) — she had one fixed under her skin. It showed her family’s name and address. Ruthie was immediately reunited with Nancy Noel and her daughter, Sara Werden. “We never thought we would see her again,” said Sara Werden. “We were just amazed.” She’s no longer the tiny pup they last saw. In fact, Ruthie gained (增加) 10 pounds during her months away from home. She’s on a diet now, and has already lost one and a half pounds. Ruthie also has a new friend to play with. The family had got another dog, named Holly, after losing the hope of ever finding their beloved Ruthie. 28. According to the passage, when did Ruthie get together with her family? A. In October 2005. B. In March 2006. C. In May 2007. D. In March 2007. 29. According to the passage, Ruthie should be _____. A. a pet dog that Nancy Noel raised B. one of Nancy Noel’s daughters C. one of Holly’s sisters D. a police working for Nancy Noel 30. Which of the following shows the right time order according to the passage? a. Ruthie was sent to a shelter. b. Ruthie stayed outside a Long Island store. c. Ruthie was fixed a microchip. d. Ruthie reunited with her family. e. Shelter workers found Ruthie’s address. A. baecd B. caebd C. bedac D. cbaed 31. Which of the following can be inferred according to the passage? A Ruthie was stolen by a thief. B. Ruthie had enough food during the days when she was lost. C. Nancy Noel never lost the hope of finding Ruthie. D. Ruthie had to put on weight after she was found again. D As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers. There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do. A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded. Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation. The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting acquainted in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting fellow participants in personal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted. The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality. 32. Why does the author mention his childhood experience? A. To show how his character changed. B. To explain what he was like when he was young. C. To show an example of why people are shy of communication. D. To emphasize the important role of a mother in one’s childhood. 33. What does the underlined word “unfounded” probably mean? A. Careless. B. Baseless. C. Selfless. D. Meaningless. 34. What do we know about the liking gap from the text? A. It indicates what strangers really think of us. B. It begins and ends quickly among strangers. C. It disappears when strangers get to know each other. D. It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us. 35. Which of the following is the best title for this text? A. People Like You More than You Know B. How to Get Along Well with Strangers C. The Way to Know What Others Think of Us D. Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us If you are someone who struggles with exam anxiety, know that you aren’t alone. Ever since graduated from high school last week, he has made a plan to go on a trip with me to the famous place of interest - The Potala Palace (布达拉宫) in Tibet. The Potala Palace is considered as a model of Tibetan architecture. It is located in Red Hill. The palace has 13 stories and is 117 meters high. It is not only the unique cultural heritage of human beings on this high and snowy plateau, but also the symbol of the creativity of Tibetan people. In 1994, the palace joined the list of world cultural heritage sites. Since traveling expenses will cost him a lot, we decided to ride our bikes to go there. In our family, no one can change our minds once we were determined to do it. Finally, our parents gave in as usual though they expected us to take a long-distance bus. Yesterday we made preparations for the trip, including traveling equipment, clothes and schedule. Then we began our trip. It was a really hard journey but we enjoyed great views. A Welcome to Holker Hall & Gardens Visitor Information How to Get to Holker By Car: Follow brown signs an A590 from JB6, M6. A. 根据文章第二段“The story goes back to October, 2005.”(这个故事追溯到2005年10月)和第一段的“17 months to be exact — with an ending that’s short and sweet. Ruthie has, finally and happily, been reunited with her family.”(确切地说,17个月后Ruthie终于高兴地与主人团聚),可以推断他们的团聚是在2007年3月。 根据文章第一段“She’s no longer the tiny pup they last saw”( 她不再是他们最后一次见到的那个小小狗了)可知,Ruthie是Nancy Noel养的宠物狗 。故选A。 根据第四段的“And then, shelter workers searched Ruthie for a possible microchip (微芯片) — she had one fixed under her skin.”(然后,收容所的工作人员在Ruthie 身上找到了一块埋在皮肤下的微晶片)可知,在Ruthie走失前主人就已经给她安装了微晶片;以及第二段“Ruthie, 8 months old, was sitting on the back seat of the family car when her owner walked hurriedly into a Long Island store. ”(8个月大的露丝坐在家里汽车的后座上,这时她的主人匆匆走进了长岛的一家商店。)可知,Ruthie走失前是在长岛一家商店外,因此前两项顺序是cb,再结合文章内容可知,走失后的Ruthie 被送到了动物收容所,收容所的工作人员通过她身上的微晶片联系上她的主人,最后Ruthie 与主人团聚,故选D。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“In fact, Ruthie gained (增加) 10 pounds during her months away from home.”(事实上,在离开家的几个月,Ruthie的体重增加了10磅)可知,她有足够的食物。故选B。 D As a young child, I was painfully shy. Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. 根据第一段关键句“As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach.”(小时候,我非常害羞。 和第二段内容“There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.”(可能有很多原因。 根据第四段关键句“In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.”(在这样做的过程中,他们发现了一种新的认知错觉,他们称之为“喜欢差距”:经过一番交谈后,我们没有意识到陌生人有多么欣赏我们的陪伴。) 根据第四段关键句“In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.”(在这样做的过程中,他们发现了一种新的认知错觉,他们称之为“喜欢差距”:经过一番交谈后,我们没有意识到陌生人有多么欣赏我们的陪伴。) 通读全文,结合第二段关键句“But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.”(但除此之外,一个可能的因素是,我和我们大多数人一样,在遇到别人之后,往往会低估他们对我的喜爱程度。)和第四段关键句“In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.”(在这样做的过程中,他们发现了一种新的认知错觉,他们称之为“喜欢差距”:经过一番交谈后,我们没有意识到陌生人有多么欣赏我们的陪伴。) 故选A项。 If you are someone who struggles with exam anxiety, know that you aren’t alone. 【36题详解】 前文“Stress can improve your work performance, think more quickly and more efficiently.”(压力可以提高你的工作表现,思考更快更有效率)提到了压力在生活中带给我们的好处。下文“These high levels of stress and anxiety have harmful effects on both your mental health and your performance. ”(这些高水平的压力和焦虑对你的心理健康和表现都有害)讲到了压力和焦虑过大会对健康带来害处。所以空白处应为承上启下的作用。与前文表示转折,开启下文的话题,即压力有时还是会对健康带来害处的。选项E“That being said, sometimes stress can turn into anxiety, which is overwhelming.”(话虽如此,有时候压力会转化为焦虑,这是不可抗拒的)与文意相符,故选E。 【37题详解】 前文“Simply being aware of what is causing your anxiety -can help to lessen the effects. Try to take some time to reflect on what could be causing your anxiety.”(只要知道是什么引起你的焦虑,可以帮助减轻影响。 D“Once you address the causes, it puts you in a better position to treat it.”(一旦你解决了病因,你就能更好地治疗它)符合题意,故选D。 【38题详解】 前文“For example, if you’re someone that tends to be a bit of a perfectionist, you might experience higher levels of exam anxiety. ”(例如,如果你是一个有点完美主义的人,你可能会经历更高程度的考试焦虑)列举了会带来更大焦虑的一个情景,由此推知,下文应该承接前文讲述这种焦虑对你而言的意义。选项G“This often means you set yourself up for failure, due to the fear of never feeling “good enough”.”(这通常意味着你将自己置于失败或失望之中,因为你害怕自己永远不会觉得“足够好”)符合逻辑,故选G。 【39题详解】 前文“Most of the time, the key to exam anxiety is making full preparations. Make an early start on your revision. Starting 6 weeks before the exam is usually recommended.”(大多数时候,减少考试焦虑的关键是做好充分的准备。 下文“Take enough time to do yourself justice.”(给自己足够的时间来审视自己)说明我们要根据自己的实际情形来安排。 F“But this can change depending on where you feel you are in your studies and the study level.”(但这可能会因为你在学习中的感觉和学习水平而改变)与文意相符,故选F。 【40题详解】 下文“Studying constantly will make you worn out, and you may even feel burnt out —long before you even get the chance to sit the exam. Make sure that you have at least one day off from revision a week. ”(不停地学习会让你筋疲力尽,甚至在你有机会参加考试之前,你就会感到筋疲力尽。确保每周至少有一天不用复习)提到我们在学习疲惫的同时也要注意休息,即要劳逸结合。所以空白处应总说我们也不能忽略照顾自己的健康。选项A“Also, try not to neglect your self-care.”(而且,不要忽视你的自我照顾)符合题意,故选A。 On Nov. 29, 2011, my little sister Lily was born.
