Growing up, Velasquez said she lived in two different worlds. At home, her family treated her just like everyone else. Her parents raised her to appreciate herself. But that got harder when she started school.“I didn't become aware of it until I started kindergarten, because I was entering the other world where I had to face the reality,” says Velasquez. As Velasquez got into high school, she started to gain more understanding about her condition. But then came the video, which threatened her already-shaky foundation.Though it was difficult, that moment of bullying (霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. She wanted to stop this behavior. Then she gave a talk about her story, reaching millions with her uplifting messages about beauty. And she gave interviews on national talk shows and was featured in the documentary film A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story.“I want to remind people that no matter how different you are and no matter what people say about you, you are meant to be in this world and being different is unique,” says Velasquez. We tend to compare ourselves to influencers and celebrities—so it's easy to understand how that can affect our confidence. But, how often have you found yourself comparing your life to your friends'? Engaging with social media shared by our friends can be more damaging than looking at contents shared by celebrities, new research has found. The study looking at how social media affects body image found that any social media engagement was significantly associated with lower “appearance satisfaction”. Additionally, it found that engaging with contents posted by people the participants knew was more than twice as damaging as looking at contents posted by strangers, including celebrities. Viren Swami, professor of social psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, believes this is partly because we know it's hard to attain the lives of celebrities or influencers, but when we're comparing ourselves to our friends, it feels like we should—or could—live the way they do. “One possible explanation is that people may perceive a post showing appearance as being much more attainable if it comes from someone they know, adding expectation or pressure on the person engaging in the post,” he said. “At the same time, people may be more critically engaged with posts by the likes of models and celebrities, and therefore perceive the images they share to be more unrealistic. ” This isn't just confined to body image though. We all have one area in our lives that triggers (触发) us. Maybe you've been searching for a new job for months and you find yourself on social media, envying your school friend who just landed his dream role. Maybe... All this is to state the obvious:We only see part of people's lives—and if it's getting you down, you're probably comparing your insides to other people's outsides. Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So, put down your phone, get offline, be thankful and try to live your own life. 28.What did the new study find? A.Social media invites unfavorable comments. Comparisons can help to make decisions and motivate you but they can also pull you into a comparison trap. Whether it's the number of goals you've scored at football or how many books you've read, it's easy to compare yourself to someone else.Scientists say it's natural behaviour that helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more.Although comparing can be good for you, it's not always helpful and you can find yourself stuck in a comparison trap. This is when you always measure yourself against others and base your feelings on how well others seem to be doing. Becky Goddard-Hill is a child psychologist and author of Create Your Own Confidence. She says that comparisons can make us feel good and bad about ourselves.“Comparing up” means seeing someone doing better than you and using that to inspire yourself to aim higher and try harder. However, Goddard-Hill says, “Sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and knock your confidence.” “Comparing down” is when you see someone who seems like they're not doing as well as you. This might make you feel you're doing well, says Goddard-Hill, but it can also stop you wanting to improve. “If your feelings depend on what other people are doing, surround yourself with cheerleaders,” suggests Goddard-Hill.Notice how people make you feel and spend time with friends who celebrate your strengths rather than compare themselves to you. If you follow social media accounts that make you feel you are failing in any way, unfollow them.“Find ones that make you laugh or show you lovely places instead,” she says. Finally, focus on your own achievements and how you can improve.“The best person you can compete with is yourself,” says Goddard-Hill. 32.How does a comparison trap affect us? A.It helps us focus on our own behaviour. B.It stops us from learning from each other. A.The latter may encourage us to appreciate others. B.The former may help us try harder and gain confidence. C.The latter may fail to help us make self-improvement. D.The former may stop us from learning from role models. 32 33 34 35 34.What does Goddard-Hill suggest? A.Aiming to be our best. B.Trying to be the best. C.Trying to be a cheerleader. D.Valuing others' achievements. 根据文章最后一段中“Finally, focus on your own achievements and how you can improve.‘The best person you can compete with is yourself,’ says Goddard-Hill.” 故选A项。 32 33 34 35 35.In which section of a magazine can you find the text? With adults spending so much time on it, it is little wonder that kids also spend more time in front of the television than outdoors. With families becoming more and more nuclear, most mothers start off by using the television as a “babysitter”. 36 However, most parents would rethink their strategy if they are aware of the side effects of over exposure to the television. 36 37 38 39 40 A.So stop letting our children live in a make-believe world. B.Television has been such an essential part of our daily lives. C.This includes violence and viewing not suitable for their age. D.Therefore, both parents and children should be aware of this fact. E.And their children are left in front of the TV to avoid making trouble. F.Moreover, it is harmful to children's health, particularly their eyesight. G.TV watching also reduces the time children spend communicating with others. E。 36 37 38 39 40 Children watch on an average around 28 hours of television per week. 37 By the age of eight, aggression becomes so rooted in a child that it predicts adult aggression.Besides, it has been found that children who spend a lot of time in front of the television do poorly in school. 38 Consequently their social development will be affected. 39 So it's almost impossible to completely ban it from our children's life. However, as parents we could: • Get children interested in sports. • Encourage children to cultivate the reading habit. • Set a good example by limiting our own television viewing. • Help children develop other hobbies such as building models and drawing. • Choose the programs our children will watch, and stick to the schedule. 36 37 38 39 40 36 37 38 39 40 A.So stop letting our children live in a make-believe world. I would appreciate it a lot if you could take my advice into consideration.I am looking forward to your final decision. “Watch out! You nearly broadsided that car!” My father yelled at me.“Can't you do anything right?” Those words hurt worse than blows.I turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me.A lump rose in my throat as I averted my eyes.I wasn't prepared for another quarrel.“I saw the car, Dad.Please don't yell at me when I'm driving.” My voice was measured and steady, sounding far calmer than I really felt.Dad glared at me, and then turned away and settled back. That night I went outside to collect my thoughts. What could I do about him? Dad had been a lumberjack (伐木工人) in Washington and Oregon. He had enjoyed being outdoors using his strength against the forces of nature. The first time he couldn't lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, struggling to lift it.He became angry whenever anyone teased him about his advancing age, or when he couldn't do something he had done as a younger man. Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack. An ambulance sped him to the hospital. At the hospital, Dad was rushed into an operating room.He was lucky; he survived. But something inside Dad died. His enthusiasm for life was gone.He refused to follow the doctor's orders.Suggestions and offers of help were turned down with bad words. The number of visitors thinned, and then finally stopped altogether.Dad was left alone. My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come and live with us on our small farm.We hoped the fresh air and rustic atmosphere would help him adjust.Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. It seemed that nothing was satisfactory. He criticized everything I did.I became upset.Soon I was taking my anger out on Dick.We began to argue.Luckily, Dick had a friend who was a mental health expert. After he listened to our story, he recommended that we should find a dog to accompany Dad.I thought maybe I should have a try. I drove to the animal shelter and was led to the kennels (狗舍) by a keeper.____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Dad! Look what I got for you, Dad!” I said excitedly._______ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] I drove to the animal shelter and was led to the kennels (狗舍) by a keeper. Each cage contained five to seven dogs.Long-haired dogs, curly-haired dogs, black dogs and spotted dogs all jumped up, trying to reach me.I studied each one but rejected one after another for various reasons: too big, too small, too much hair and so on.As I approached an old dog, its eyes caught my attention.Calm and clear, they were telling me that it was waiting for my arrival.I made an immediate decision that I would bring it home for Dad. “Dad! Look what I got for you, Dad!” I said excitedly. Dad, however, wasn't that excited as I had expected. With days going by, he accepted the new family member gradually. He even named the dog Cherry, with whom he spent long hours walking down the country road, exploring the community.Cherry grew to be an inseparable companion throughout the next three years.Dad's bitterness faded, his enthusiasm for life restored.Dick and I were happy to find our “former” Dad back. The special experience enlightened me that company is the most important for the elderly. $$
