Text 1
W:Is it Monday already? Where did the weekend go? At least I have my regular Tuesday dancing class to look forward to.
M:I envy you.My week will be made up of conferences and interviews.
Text 2
W:Guess what!I was interviewed for the Six O'clock News on TV.They were asking people for their views on pollution.
M:Really? Wow! Turn on the TV.It starts in five minutes.
Text 3
M:I'm going to Tom's house,Mom.Could you give me a lift? My bike is out of action.
W:Don't be so lazy,Peter. He only lives half a mile away.If you never walk anywhere, you'll soon become overweight.
Text 4
M:I stepped on the dog's tail by accident this morning. Then I hit my head against the door and knocked a cup off the shelf in the kitchen.
W:It doesn't surprise me.The damage you cause is costing us a serious amount of money.
Text 5
W:I've bandaged the wound and I'll give you some tablets for the pain.Tell me,how did you injure your foot so badly?
M:I was handing my homework to the teacher when I tripped over another student's bag.
Text 6
M:Mom,why do you bother growing vegetables in the garden?Carrots, for instance, are very cheap to buy.
W:Because food I grow myself tastes better. When I grow potatoes or onions,I grow them the natural way so I know what has gone into them.
M:But it takes a lot of work to dig the garden.
W:Yes,but that is what nature is really like. And look how much you enjoy my beans. My corn was your favorite when you were little.
M:I must admit that your vegetables are tastier than the kind you buy.
Text 7
W:Was everything OK,sir? Would you like me to bring you the dessert menu?
M:It was absolutely delicious and I have eaten quite enough, thank you. However, because I'm greedy...yes,I will have the dessert menu.
W:Ha-ha.Here it is.
M:Is there anything you would recommend?
W:The chef's special is very popular. It's the strawberry pie. Then there's the chocolate cake. That's the one I like best.
M:I'll have to give the pie a miss.I have an allergy. The fruit salad looks nice, but I trust your judgement,so I'll have your favorite.
W:OK.By the way,there's a taxi outside.Did you order one?
M:I did.But if it's mine,he's 10 minutes early.Could you ask him to wait?
W:It's my pleasure.
Text 8
W:Hey,John,do you need any help with your house project today? I saw you struggling a bit when you were on your own yesterday.I wanted to come over and help then, but I was really busy grading my students' essays.
M:Thanks for the offer,Gail.I couldn't ask you to waste your afternoon helping me,though. It's a difficult job,and the summer heat is not making it any easier.
W:Don't be silly. You have helped me plenty of times since I moved to this neighborhood.Do you remember when you helped me replace my old windows and put that apple tree in the ground?I can definitely help you with this.
M:I suppose you're right, but I don't want to make you climb on my roof.Would you just hold the ladder for me so it doesn't fall over? I think without having to worry about keeping my balance so much,I will be able to work much quicker.
W:No problem.I can do anything to make you feel better and less dangerous.
Text 9
W:There is some smoke.I wonder where it is coming from. There aren't any factories over there, are there?
M:No.Maybe someone is having a barbecue.
W:It must be the world's biggest barbecue. That smoke is a hundred feet high.
M:Listen, sirens. There is your answer. There is always trouble for someone.
W:It looks like it is coming from those new houses across the park.Just imagine moving into a new house and then it burns down.
M:It may not be that.Maybe it's just a garden fire that has got out of control.
W:Oh look, here is someone who will know all about it.If there is any news to be told,Liz will have it.
M:Now don't be unkind. She's a valuable source of neighbourhood information.
W: Yes, who needs radio or newspapers when Liz is around?
M: She does tend to overstate.I think the newspapers are definitely more accurate than her.
W:But she's the kindest person I know.
M:I know. She loves looking after our children.Anyone who can tolerate them deserves a medal.
W:Hey,look. The smoke has gone. That was quick. What would you say—20 minutes or half an hour?
M:Those firefighters don't mess about.It was 3:00 p.m.when the smoke appeared and it's only 3:40 p.m.now.
Text 10
M:Good evening. This is Mark Vapor with the Nightly News at nine. Our top story tonight is the train crash on the Red Line. We've just gotten a report from police on the scene that fortunately,no one was seriously injured. The accident apparently occurred because of an electrical problem with the track signals.Traffic in the area is stopped,so drivers should avoid going to the Hilltop area for the next few hours until the accident is cleared up.This is also,of course, causing major delays for train riders.Check the city's website for up-to-date train times.
The rest of the city looks good for a Friday night.Traffic is still backing up on the bridge heading east, but it should clear up in about an hour.Westward traffic has no delays. And now, let's take a look at the weather for this weekend.Tonight, skies will remain clear. There will be some fog early tomorrow morning, especially on the south side of the city. That should go away by 11:00,and then temperatures will quickly rise from a morning high of 76 degrees to 91 degrees by 3:00 p.m.Sunday will follow the same pattern, but the hottest it will get is 87 degrees.Enjoy your Friday night and don't forget to come back tomorrow morning with me, Mark Vapor.I'll bring you the top headlines and traffic updates every hour from seven until noon.

My mother was from a generation of women in India who truly worked the “double shift”, but that did not mean that her responsibilities at home were in any way decreased. It's one of the reasons I do not blame her for not being passionate about food the way I am, or not making cooking with my sister and me a priority. The last thing she needed was us walking around the kitchen, messing up her system, and making a mess.
I only started cooking for myself when I was homesick in England and the food of my homeland and childhood made me feel closer to my family.Mom and I have very different styles of cooking.I have a huge collection of cookbooks and I love learning all about food that is unfamiliar to me.Mom's cooking and her recipes came all down from her parents, a continuation of oral (口述的) traditions and culture.Sometimes, I catch my mom browsing through my cookbook collection in wonder and I see her eyes widen with appreciation and understanding.
I like to develop a recipe, and if it isn't right the first time, I'll keep trying until it's perfect. My samosa (萨莫萨三角炸饺) recipe, for example, is a testament (证明) to it.Mom never liked making samosas; she thought they were a waste of time when we could just as easily go and buy some.I was enthusiastic about making the perfect ones, and gave her calls—a lot of them in the middle of the night—until I knew I had the right recipe and quantities. When we cook together, I am constantly pestering (打扰) her for quantities and she looks at me with amusement,
as I am pulling my hair in frustration: Whose handful is that small handful referring to, Mother? But my mom smiles as she happily adds a pinch of (一撮) this and a teaspoon of that. She tells me that I am lucky to be able to enjoy cooking, and asks if I am too serious about quantities, and am I still enjoying myself?
My mom has taught me a lot about life and food.I am really grateful to her.

Although onions taste delicious, watering eyes come with the process when you cut them up.Thankfully, a magazine has suggested some tips to prevent yourself from crying while you are trying to cut up an onion.
According to the findings from the institute, putting onions in a fridge 30 minutes before cutting can prevent the annoying hurt, as the cold stops tear-jerking (催泪的) gas from being produced.
Another way to reduce the gas released by the onion is to put it in water for a while. The magazine recommends, “Cut the end off the onion and then put it straight into a bowl of water. The water will draw out the acid, making you tear up less when you cut it.”
When an onion grows, it mixes with sulfur (硫) in the soil to create a special mineral acid. When the onion is cut into pieces, it reacts and creates a gas.As it reaches your face, this annoying gas causes the eyes to produce tears.
The root is where the gases are most concentrated, so it is recommended that this part of the onion be left on as you cut it to avoid uncomfortable eyes.Do this by cutting the vegetable in half down the middle to create a flat surface. Then, place the onion with its flat surface down and cut it towards the root.
Also, to reduce the gas's effect on your eyes, cut it next to a window or near a fan so the gas is blown away from your face. And take care to use a sharp knife; this will make it easier to move through the vegetable, causing fewer cells to be broken and less gas to be released as a result.

Over the years, Brian Wansink, director of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, has studied such things as how far Americans typically drive to buy food, how many times we refill our plates at all-you-can-eat buffets and how we organize our kitchens. In the mid-2000s he famously coined the phrase “mindless eating” (and wrote a book by that name) to focus attention on all the bad dietary decisions we make without really thinking about them.
His new book, Slim by Design:Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life, aims to change the design of restaurants, school lunchrooms, office cafeterias and homes so that the mindless choices we make will be more healthful ones. Here are some examples.
Keep kitchen counters clear. No visible snack food, no bread, no nuts—not even breakfast cereals. In Wansink's research, “women who had even one box of breakfast cereal that was visible—anywhere in their kitchens—weighed 21 pounds more than their neighbors who didn't.”
Trick yourself into drinking less wine.“We tend to focus on the height of what we pour and not the width, so we pour 12 percent less wine into taller wine glasses than we pour into wider wine glasses.” And the shape of the glass is not the only variable (变量) that affects how much we drink.Wansink writes,“Because red wine is easier to see than white wine, we pour 9 percent less whenever we pour a glass of red wine.”
Wansink said his researchers also found that people ate less at restaurants when sitting in well-lighted areas near windows and doors, than in darker areas or in the back. They ate less if they were offered a doggie bag, or to-go box, before they got their meals: apparently the idea of getting a “free” second meal outweighed the impulse (冲动) to clean their plates.Workers who frequently ate at their desks weighed 15.4 pounds less, on average, than those who didn't.Fruit and vegetables kept on the top shelf of the refrigerator were eaten at higher rates than those on lower shelves.
The point, Wansink says, is to consider findings like those and change your environment or habits. Then you won't have to think about it: You'll just eat less.
[语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了改变用餐场所的设计以及改变饮食习惯可以减少食物的摄入量。
32.Why did Brian Wansink write Slim by Design:Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life?
A.Because he wanted people to become thin.
B.Because he wanted people to learn from him.

I'm a player.Last year, I won a gold medal. However, I might not have won it without a girl's help.
I was in a city in a foreign country where I entered a very important competition.I usually took a bus to the venue (会场) where the races were held.
One day, I was supposed to take part in my final men's 110-meter race.I set off for the venue about an hour before the race.I got on the bus that would take me to the venue. I looked around the bus and saw nobody I knew. Soon I began to feel bored. Therefore, I decided to listen to some music. I put on my earphones and the loud music began.
I listened and listened and when I looked out of the window, I became worried. I was not familiar with the surroundings (环境). “I have missed my bus stop,” I said to myself.I immediately went to the bus driver and asked him to stop the bus, but it took him about 5 minutes to understand what I was saying.
Luckily, the bus stopped at the next bus stop. I immediately got off the bus. Looking at the totally new surroundings, I was very anxious. I wanted to take a bus that would take me to the venue, but I didn't know when it would come. I knew I had to take a taxi, but I didn't have enough money with me.I feared I'd be late for the race, not to mention a warm-up.
Just then a local girl walked to me. She looked very nice. She stopped in front of me and asked me in English if I needed any help. I told her that my race was going to take place soon. It turned out that she was a volunteer. She told me not to worry. Then she stopped a taxi for me. She told the driver where I was going, and she also paid for the ride for me.
