Yellowing paper and black-and-white photographs spilled out of its sides. In handwritten Spanish, the label on its cover read “Family History”. I opened it to the first page and began to read. “I’m not sure what it is that I’m about to write, but I’ve had this idea for a number of years…” This was clearly Grandpa’s handwriting. In his basement in the suburbs outside of London I read on in silence. Within the first few pages of the notebook, Grandpa had recounted our family’s history. What I held in my hands was an oral history, consisting of diaries, letters, and newspaper cuttings from Grandpa’s own youth, a treasure of research. I didn’t tell Grandpa what I’d found in his basement until one day he happened to see me there, with his notebook open on the desk. My face reddened. “I’ve been looking at your writing. It’s very interesting.” Out of my expectation, he broke into a wide smile, and his eyes welled up with tears. Then he began to tell me the family story, explaining the parts I didn’t understand. As both a grandson and a journalist, I asked questions that brought color to these histories. Why did my great-grandfather leave Iraq in such a hurry in the early 1900s? Why did he work as a traveling salesman in the remote Andes Mountains? Answers to these questions brought me a sense of excitement, sort of like unlocking a new world. Recently, I was traveling the country to discuss a book I wrote about my search across Argentina for traces of my great-grandfather. What I’ve realized by talking with others is that time and energy remain our biggest barriers to hearing our families’ stories. They are the identities we create in worlds foreign and familiar, remembered now but forever in danger of being forgotten. I feel lucky to have asked before it’s too late, before the keepers of the answers are gone. 6. What did the author find in his grandpa’s basement? A. A long lost history book. B. Hidden family treasures. C. Stories created by Grandpa. D. Records of family history. 7. How did Grandpa feel when he saw the author in the basement? A. Embarrassed and shy. B. Sad and then relieved. C. Emotional and pleased. D. Annoyed but then forgiving. 8. What may the finding have inspired the author to do? A. To become a better journalist. B To explore his family further. C. To do more international travel. D. To collect more dying folk stories. 9. According to the author, what is the main challenge in protecting family stories? A. Lack of interest from younger generations. B. The high cost of researching family history. C. Time and energy required to collect the stories. D. Difficulty in understanding old languages. 10. What does the underlined word “They” in the last paragraph refer to? A. The barriers. B. People we talked with. C. The books we wrote. D. Our families’ stories. C Scientists have uncovered communities of animals living in volcanic caves beneath the seafloor, revealing a previously unknown but thriving ecosystem. Previous research had found microbes (微生物) living underground near hydrothermal vents (热液喷口), but this is the first reported discovery of larger animals such as tubeworms and snails in the underground habitat. Hydrothermal vents are cracks in the seafloor where hot water from the Earth’s core mixes with seawater. Much of the ocean floor is considered nearly uninhabitable, but around hydrothermal vents there’s an explosion of life. Communities of shrimp, crabs, tubeworms, and hundreds of unique animal species have been previously found around, but not underneath, these vents. They’re known as “extremophiles,” or life that can survive under extremely high temperatures and pressure. These species survive not on the sun’s energy, which fuels the food web elsewhere on Earth, but on nutrients produced when seawater mixes with magma (岩浆). Recent scientific research has revealed that tubeworms and sea snails can be found not only on top of the seafloor but also underneath rocky sections. This discovery has the potential to significantly advance our understanding of these species’ life cycle and behavior. The researchers think tubeworms might disperse throughout the caves, with some settling and growing in cracks on the seafloor and others staying in the caves and growing to adulthood there — which would mean the seafloor and small caves underneath are an interconnected ecosystem, where cold and warm water flows mix and promote tubeworm growth. The hydrothermal vent ecosystem in this area is not limited to what we see above but includes life in the subsurface. Deep-sea mining, which involves extracting (获取) minerals from the deep seabed, is a major threat to deep-sea ecosystems and is opposed by scientists and conservation organizations. “We don’t know how extensive those connected little caves are, and we’re unable to assess the biodiversity within the subsurface. Since seafloor ecosystems are likely interconnected. Large stretches of the seafloor need to be protected,” says Rachel Lauer, a geologist at the University of Calgary. 11. What does the new study reveal? A. Volcanic activity is frequent in the deep sea. B. Larger animals survive beneath the ocean floor. C. There is a community of microbes underground. D. Hydrothermal vents shape the marine ecosystem. 12. What do we know about species living around hydrothermal vents? A. They feed on underwater plants. B. They rely on sunlight for energy. C. They can survive in extreme conditions. D. They favor a relatively hot environment. 13. What can be inferred about tubeworms’ life cycles based on the text? A. They grow only in warm water near hydrothermal vents. B. They avoid settling in cracks on the seafloor. C. Their habitats might be part of a connected ecosystem. D. Their growth is unaffected by water temperature. 14. What is the purpose of the last paragraph? A. To call on people to protect seafloor ecosystems. B. To stress the importance of protecting biodiversity. C. To explain the link between volcanic caves and the seafloor. D. To show the effect of deep-sea mining on life in the subsurface. 15. What’s tone does the author use when he writes about the new scientific discovery? A. Doubtful. B. Subjective. C. Objective. D. Critical. I’ve learned a lot in my many years in the gym, and beginner-me would be shocked by the things present-me does during the workouts. ___16___. And I’ve broken pretty much every other rule besides. Rest days are a convenient tool for making sure you’re not overworking yourself, but that’s all. Organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine recommend leaving 48 hours between intense strength-training periods for a given muscle. ___17___, it’s meant to be a general recommendation for beginners and for people who are exercising just to stay healthy. Once you’re talking about athletes or enthusiasts, they acknowledge that training most days of the week is fine, if your program manages tiredness effectively. The “10% rule” is a not-terrible guideline for figuring out how quickly to improve your training. ___18___. As running coach Jason Fitzgerald told us, “While the saying is to only increase weekly mileage (英里数) by 10%, this may be either too conservative or even too aggressive depending on where you start from.” If you’re a beginner and your mileage is overall very low; if we took the rule seriously, you wouldn’t be able to increase from zero to any other number. ___19___, but none of them are necessary. Creatine (肌酸) is one of the best-known muscle-building supplements (补充剂). It’s understood to be effective, but here’s the thing: That it does something for most people doesn’t mean it does very much. You can just eat more protein-containing foods C. There are a few supplements that can help you in your fitness journey D. Or they may keep you at the same mileage for weeks at a time E. B. To explore his family further. 6. D 7. C 8. B 9. C 10. What I held in my hands was an oral history, consisting of diaries, letters, and newspaper cuttings from Grandpa’s own youth, a treasure of research.(在笔记本的前几页里,爷爷讲述了我们家族的历史。 根据第四段第三句“Out of my expectation, he broke into a wide smile, and his eyes welled up with tears.(出乎我意料的是,他突然开怀大笑,眼里涌出了泪水。)” 根据第五段“As both a grandson and a journalist, I asked questions that brought color to these histories. Why did my great-grandfather leave Iraq in such a hurry in the early 1900s? Why did he work as a traveling salesman in the remote Andes Mountains? Answers to these questions brought me a sense of excitement, sort of like unlocking a new world.(作为孙子和记者,我提出的问题为这些历史增添了色彩。 根据最后一段第二句“What I’ve realized by talking with others is that time and energy remain our biggest barriers to hearing our families’ stories.(通过与他人交谈,我意识到时间和精力仍然是我们了解家族故事的最大障碍。)” 根据最后一段第二句“What I’ve realized by talking with others is that time and energy remain our biggest barriers to hearing our families’ stories.(通过与他人交谈,我意识到时间和精力仍然是我们了解家族故事的最大障碍。)”和第三句“They are the identities we create in worlds foreign and familiar, remembered now but forever in danger of being forgotten.(它们是我们在陌生和熟悉的世界中创造的身份,现在被记住,但永远有被遗忘的危险。)” C Scientists have uncovered communities of animals living in volcanic caves beneath the seafloor, revealing a previously unknown but thriving ecosystem. A Volcanic activity is frequent in the deep sea. B. Larger animals survive beneath the ocean floor. C. There is a community of microbes underground. D. Hydrothermal vents shape the marine ecosystem. 12. What do we know about species living around hydrothermal vents? A They feed on underwater plants. A. Doubtful. B. Subjective. C. Objective. D. Critical. B 12. C 13. C 14. A 15. 根据第一段中的“Previous research had found microbes (微生物) living underground near hydrothermal vents (热液喷口), but this is the first reported discovery of larger animals such as tubeworms and snails in the underground habitat.(早期研究曾发现微生物生活在靠近热液喷口的地下,但这是首次报道在地下栖息地中发现管状蠕虫和蜗牛等较大的动物。)” 根据第二段中的“They’re known as “extremophiles,” or life that can survive under extremely high temperatures and pressure. These species survive not on the sun’s energy, which fuels the food web elsewhere on Earth, but on nutrients produced when seawater mixes with magma (岩浆). 根据第三段中的“The researchers think tubeworms might disperse throughout the caves, with some settling and growing in cracks on the seafloor and others staying in the caves and growing to adulthood there — which would mean the seafloor and small caves underneath are an interconnected ecosystem, where cold and warm water flows mix and promote tubeworm growth.(研究人员认为,管状蠕虫可能会分散到洞穴各处,一些会在海底裂缝中定居并生长,另一些则留在洞穴中长至成年——这意味着海底和下方的小洞穴构成了一个相互连接的生态系统,冷热水流在此混合并促进管虫的生长。)” 根据尾段中的“Deep-sea mining, which involves extracting (获取) minerals from the deep seabed, is a major threat to deep-sea ecosystems and is opposed by scientists and conservation organizations. “We don’t know how extensive those connected little caves are, and we’re unable to assess the biodiversity within the subsurface. Since seafloor ecosystems are likely interconnected. Large stretches of the seafloor need to be protected,” says Rachel Lauer, a geologist at the University of Calgary.(深海采矿涉及从深海海底提取矿物,这对深海生态系统构成重大威胁,并受到科学家和保护组织的反对。‘我们不知道这些相连的小洞穴有多广泛,也无法评估地下生物多样性。由于海底生态系统可能相互关联,大片海底区域需要得到保护,’卡尔加里大学的地质学家Rachel Lauer说道。)”可知,最后一段强调了深海采矿对生态系统的威胁,并引用Rachel Lauer的话呼吁保护大片海底区域;由此可知,最后一段的目的是号召人们保护海底生态系统。故选A项。 根据第一段中的“Scientists have uncovered communities of animals living in volcanic caves beneath the seafloor, revealing a previously unknown but thriving ecosystem.(科学家们发现了生活在海底火山洞穴中的动物群落,揭示了一个此前未知但繁荣的生态系统。)”可知,作者使用“revealing”(揭示)这样的中性词汇直接陈述科学研究的结果;结合第二段中的“They’re known as “extremophiles,” or life that can survive under extremely high temperatures and pressure.(这些生物被称为‘极端生物’,它们能够在极高的温度和压力下生存。)”可知,作者用科学术语解释这些生物的特点,语气冷静且专业,没有任何夸张或情绪化的语言,以及第三段中的“The researchers think tubeworms might disperse throughout the caves, with some settling and growing in cracks on the seafloor and others staying in the caves and growing to adulthood there — which would mean the seafloor and small caves underneath are an interconnected ecosystem, where cold and warm water flows mix and promote tubeworm growth.(研究人员认为,管虫可能会分散到洞穴各处,一些会在海底裂缝中定居并生长,另一些则留在洞穴中长至成年——这意味着海底和下方的小洞穴构成了一个相互连接的生态系统,冷热水流在此混合并促进管虫的生长。)” I’ve learned a lot in my many years in the gym, and beginner-me would be shocked by the things present-me does during the workouts. Likewise, protein powder is a helpful way to get more protein in your diet, but you don’t need to use a supplement. ___20___. A. But if you look at where they get that number B. You can just eat more protein-containing foods C. There are a few supplements that can help you in your fitness journey D. Or they may keep you at the same mileage for weeks at a time E. But it’s a suggestion, not a rule to be strictly obeyed F. And finally, drinks can give you more energy in the gym G. With the benefit of experience, I now do exercises I used to think one should “never” do 【答案】16. G 17. A 18. E 19. C 20. 【17题详解】 根据空前内容“Organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine recommend leaving 48 hours between intense strength-training periods for a given muscle.(美国运动医学学院等组织建议,对某块肌肉进行高强度力量训练的间隔为48小时)”可知,美国运动医学学院等组织建议,对某块肌肉进行高强度力量训练的时间间隔为48小时。根据空后的“it’s meant to be a general recommendation for beginners and for people who are exercising just to stay healthy(它意味着对初学者和那些只是为了保持健康而锻炼的人的一般建议)”可知,A项“但如果你看看他们是从哪儿得出那个数字的”符合此处的语境。A项中的that number指的是上文中的“... 48 hours between intense strength-training periods for a given muscle.”。故选A。 根据下文内容“As running coach Jason Fitzgerald told us, ‘While the saying is to only increase weekly mileage (英里数) by 10%, this may be either too conservative or even too aggressive depending on where you start from.’(正如跑步教练Jason Fitzgerald告诉我们的那样,‘虽然俗话说每周只增加10%的里程数,但这可能过于保守,甚至过于激进,这取决于你从哪里开始。’)” 所以E项“但这(只)是一个建议,而不是一条需要严格遵守的规定”符合语境,选项中的it指代上文中的“the ‘10% rule’”,且下文的例子“If you’re a beginner and your mileage is overall very low; if we took the rule seriously, you wouldn’t be able to increase from zero to any other number.(如果你是初学者,你的里程总体上很低;如果我们认真对待这个规则,你就不能从0增加到任何其他数)”也进一步论证了E项的内容。 【20题详解】 由空前内容“Likewise, protein powder is a helpful way to get more protein in your diet, but you don’t need to use a supplement.(同样,蛋白粉是一种从饮食中获得更多蛋白质的有效方法,但你不需要使用补充剂)”可知,(补充)蛋白粉是一种从饮食中获取更多蛋白质的有效方法,但你不需要使用补充剂。 Maya’s biggest dream was to open a community center where children and adults alike could learn and grow.
