To avoid humans, mountain lions in the Greater Los Angeles area are changing their activity patterns. The big cats living near areas where humans hike, run and cycle are becoming increasingly more nocturnal (夜行的). The findings are detailed in a study published in the journal Biological Conservation.
“People are increasingly enjoying recreating in nature, which is fantastic,” study co-author Ellie Bolas said in a statement. “This flexibility we see in mountain lion activity is what allows us to share these natural areas together.”
Mountain lions are top carnivorous predators (食肉捕食者) that eat a wide variety of meat including deer, wild pigs and rabbits. While mountain lions rarely attack humans, they can still be dangerous to hikers, runners, or cyclists who spend time in their habitats. The mountain lions in the Greater Los Angeles area face numerous challenges — busy roadways where they’re often hit by cars, the threat of wildfires, harmful chemicals and disturbed habitats. Generally, mountain lions prefer to avoid humans altogether. But in an urban area home to more than 18 million people, the natural spots where mountain lions live are also heavily used by recreationists.
“These results are really important in that they show how humans may be affecting wildlife in less obvious ways than killing them with vehicles,” Seth Riley, a study co-author, said in a statement. “The study also continues to drive home the amazing fact that a population of large field predators wanders in one of the largest urban areas in the world. That would not be possible if mountain lions weren’t able to adjust to human activity.”
However, it’s not only up to the mountain lions. People have a role in helping protect themselves, their pets, and mountain lions by being aware of the high time for mountain lion activity. Be careful if you have to drive at night, when mountain lions living in populated areas are more likely to be active.
4. What is Ellie Bolas’ attitude toward people’s recreation in nature?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Intolerant. D. Supportive.
5. What can we learn about mountain lions in the Greater Los Angeles area from paragraph 3?
A. Their habitats are undisturbed. B. They are under threat.
C. They tend to get close to humans. D. Their attacks on humans are common.
6. What do Seth Riley’s words suggest about mountain lions’ adaption?
A. It displays their disastrous impact. B. It is a result of human conservation efforts.
C. It is key to their coexistence with humans. D. It has led to the decrease of human activity.
7. What is the author’s advice for humans?
A. Enjoy activity in populated areas. B. Train their pets to get active at night.
C. Avoid encounters with mountain lions. D. Drive quickly to pass by mountain lions.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. C

A new type of material that can store greenhouse gases has been developed by a team of researchers jointly led by Heriot-Watt University. The material is made up of hollow cage-like molecules (空心笼状分子) that have high storage capabilities for greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and sulphur hexafluoride — a more powerful gas that can last thousands of years in the atmosphere.
Greenhouse gases are one of the main factors responsible for causing global warming and climate change. They work like the walls of a greenhouse, trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. While some carbon dioxide is released naturally, sulphur hexafluoride is a man-made gas that traps heat very effectively.
Dr Mark Little, one of the leaders of the research, says the discovery has the potential to help solve our society’s biggest challenges, such as absorbing and storing greenhouse gases.
“Direct air capture of carbon dioxide is increasingly important because even when we stop emitting carbon dioxide, there’s still going to be a huge need to deal with previous emissions that are already in the environment,” says Dr Little. “Planting trees is a very effective way to absorb carbon, but it’s very slow. So we need a human intervention — like human-made molecules — to remove greenhouse gases from the environment.”
The researchers used computer modelling to accurately predict how molecules would integrate themselves into the new material, which Dr Little says can be further enhanced in the future through the use of artificial intelligence. He adds, “With the help of artificial intelligence, a sufficient supply of new materials that can assist in solving the most pressing challenges can be created, without the need for them to be tested in a lab.”
Dr Little says the study is an important step in developing other materials and adds that molecules with complex structures can also be used to remove toxic compounds (有毒化合物) — known as volatile organic compounds — from the air and can play an important role in medical science.
8. What is paragraph 2 intended to show?
A. Climate change is worsening. B. The new material is difficult to develop.
C. Greenhouse gases are a big problem. D. The impact of global warming is enormous.
9. Why is using the new material better than planting trees in absorbing carbon?
A. It is more eco-friendly. B. It costs less time.
C. It functions for a longer period. D. It involves no human intervention.
10. Why does Dr Little mention artificial intelligence?
A. It predicts our society’s most pressing challenges.
B. It enables more new molecules to be tested in a lab.
C. It prevents humans from producing greenhouse gases.
D. It helps create materials used to tackle greenhouse gases.
11. What does Dr Little indicate about molecules with complex structures?
A. They can benefit more than one field. B. They lead to more toxic compounds.
C. They were first used in medical science. D. They are the core of organic compounds.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

One of the disadvantages of traditional fitness trackers and other wearable devices is that their batteries eventually run out of juice. But what if in the future, wearable technology could use body heat to power itself?
Researchers from University of Washington (UW) have developed a flexible, durable electronic model that can harvest energy from body heat automatically and turn it into electricity that can be used to power small electronics, such as batteries, sensors or LEDs.
The team detailed these models in a paper published in Advanced Materials. “I had this vision a long time ago,” said Mohammad Malakooti, UW assistant professor of mechanical engineering. “When you put this device on your skin, it uses your body heat to directly power an LED. As soon as you put the device on, the LED lights up. This wasn’t possible before.” Traditionally, devices that use heat to generate electricity are rigid and easily-broken, but Malakooti and his team previously created one that is highly flexible and soft so that it can fit in with the shape of someone’s arm.
This new device has three main layers. At the center are rigid thermoelectric semiconductors that do the work of transforming heat into electricity. To provide stretchability, conductivity and electrical self-healing, the semiconductors are connected with printed liquid metal traces. Additionally, tiny drops of liquid metal are put into the outer layers to boost heat transfer to the semiconductors and keep them flexible since the metal stays liquid at room temperature. Everything except the semiconductors was designed and developed in Malakooti’s lab.
“In addition to wearables, these devices could be useful in other applications,” Malakooti said. One idea involves using these devices with electronics that get hot. “You can imagine sticking these devices onto warm electronics and using that extra heat to power small sensors,” Malakooti said. “This could be especially helpful in data centers, where servers and computing equipment consume substantial electricity and generate heat, requiring even more electricity to keep them cool. Plus, these devices also work backwards, in that adding electricity allows them to heat or cool surfaces, which opens up another avenue for applications.”
12. What’s a distinct disadvantage of conventional devices?
A. They are easy to use up power. B. They are unable to harvest energy.
C. They are too flexible to wear comfortably. D. They cannot be used to power small electronics.
13. What did Mohammad Malakooti think of the new device?
A. It was impractical. B. It was revolutionary.
C. It was time-saving. D. It was energy- consuming.
14. What does paragraph 4 focus on about the device?
A. Its design process. B. Its existing restrictions.
C. Its unique structure. D. Its potential applications.
15. What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. The disadvantages of the new device.
B. The methods of using the new device.
C. The reasons for applying the new device.
D. The prospect of employing the new device in more fields.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A golden haze settled over the cornfields. The sun prepared to rest for the evening, and I intended to follow. Saying goodbye to the clan (宗族) I was staying with, I headed back to camp. I looked forward to setting my camera aside for an evening to reflect on my time in Ethiopia.
It wasn’t long when I heard a voice behind me, “Photo, photo, photo.” A young Surma boy about eight years old followed closely at my heels. I breathed a tired sigh. I had no energy to press the shutter button one more time, no matter how beautiful or eager he was.
Over the past four days, many in the camp had wanted their photograph taken. I hoped the boy would find someone else to snap his photograph, but he kept following me and saying, “Photo, photo, photo.” He managed to catch my eye. With eyes wide full of hope, he asked me again with anticipation on his face.
As I looked at him, half interested, an idea for a composition flashed in my mind.
I kneeled in the cornfield and instructed the boy where to stand and how to pose. As I prepared to take the photograph, his energy suddenly shifted from eagerness to shyness to fear.
No matter what I told him to do—how to stand and how to look—I just couldn’t get the shot. Frustrated, I gave up. I looked at the boy, who looked alone and awkward. He’d wanted his photograph taken, and now he’d gone camera-shy.
In an effort to cheer him, I clapped my hands, saying, “That was great. You were great.” Others in his clan gathered around, cheering and clapping loudly. The boy’s face immediately broke into a smile. I intuitively (凭直觉地) took a few shots of the moment. That photograph turned out to be better than I’d imagined.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I printed a large copy of the photograph and returned to the Surma boy’s clan. As I handed the photo to him, his eyes widened with excitement. He held it up for everyone to see, and a chorus of laughter and cheers erupted from the clan. They gathered around, admiring the image and patting the boy on the back for his bravery and genuine smile captured in the photograph. It was a moment of pure joy and celebration. The photograph became a symbol of his resilience and the spirit of the entire community.
As I left Ethiopia, I held onto the memory of the Surma boy’s joyous tears and the collective hope of his clan. The experience reminded me of the power of photography and how it can uplift and empower individuals and communities. It taught me the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the beauty and strength in every person I encounter. Through my lens, I hope to continue capturing stories of resilience and hope, sharing them with the world and inspiring others to see the hidden beauty in those around them.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I printed a large copy of the photograph and returned to the Surma boy’s clan.
