(24-25九年级下·浙江金华·阶段练习)The global success of China’s game “Black Myth: Wukong” has introduced the tale of Sun Wukong to people worldwide. But for Ghaffar Pourazar, a British-American living in California, this legendary character has been a part of his identity (身份). He has spent the past thirty years mastering Peking Opera, becoming an excellent foreign performer in this traditional Chinese art, and getting the nickname “Western Monkey King”.
His lifelong love for Peking Opera began by chance. In 1993, 32-year-old Pourazar attended a performance at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and was immediately attracted. “I was crying,” he recalled. “I had a deep love for different art forms before, including acting, dancing, and movement. But at that moment, everything else faded away. I saw all these arts in Peking Opera.” With the help of the head of the Chinese troupe (剧团), Pourazar entered an opera school in Beijing. Just three months later, he left his life in Britain behind and moved to Beijing to train in the martial roles (武角) of the art.
Starting as an adult was not easy. “My classmates were all children,” he said. “As an adult without any basic skills, it is very hard for you to practice the movements.” Besides the physical demands, mastering the Chinese language was another challenge. “I was reciting the words and songs, whether I was eating, bathing, walking, or even dreaming,” Pourazar added. “Though it was painful, I enjoyed every moment,” he said.
Over the years, he has been introducing Peking Opera and Sun Wukong to international people, taking Chinese performers to perform in different countries. He has also been teaching courses in the US and bringing Peking Opera to Western learners. To better connect with Western learners, he has translated some classic plays such as “The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven” into English versions.
“I want to be a bridge between cultures,” he said, reflecting on his multicultural background.

(24-25九年级下·浙江金华·阶段练习)Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.
“For the rent.” Mama would count out the big silver pieces.
“For the groceries.” Another group of coins.
“I’ll need a notebook.” That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.
Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with anxious interest. At last, Papa would ask, “Is that all?” And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile, “Good. We do not have to go to the Bank.” We were all so proud of Mama’s Bank Account. It gave us such a warm, secure feeling.
When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. “It will cost a little money,” he said.
Eagerly we gathered around the table. I took down a box and laid it carefully in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank”. It was used for sudden emergencies, such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to be taken to a doctor.
Nels listed the costs of the things he would need. Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough. “We do not want to go to the Bank,” she reminded. We all shook our heads.
“I will work in Dillon’s grocery after school,” Nels volunteered.
Mama gave him a bright smile and wrote down a number. “That’s not enough,” Papa said. Then he took his pipe out of his mouth and looked at it for a long time. “I will give up smoking,” he said suddenly.
Mama reached across the table and touched Papa’s arm. Then she wrote down another figure.
“I will look after the Elvington children every Friday night,” I said. “Christine can help me.”
Now there was enough money. We all felt very good because we did not have to go downtown and draw money out of Mama’s Bank Account.
So many things came out of the Little Bank that year: Christine’s dress for the school play, my little sister Dagmar’s operation.... Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the Bank to depend upon.
That was twenty years ago. Last year I sold my first story. When the check came, I hurried over to Mama’s and put it in her lap. “For you,” I said, “to put in your Bank Account.” Mama looked at me. “There is no account,” she said. “________.” And when I didn’t—couldn’t answer, Mama said seriously, “It is not good for little ones to be afraid—to not feel secure.”

(2024·浙江嘉兴·模拟预测)Like any simple activity, running gives you the space to actually think about your thinking. Today, as I was jogging slowly along, I began to pay attention to this feeling that was present: the urge (冲动) to stop running, the urge to give up.
I was out for a jog. I wasn’t really tired. And yet the feeling was still there. “Stop running.” This hurts.
But I continued running. And as I ran along, another feeling came up. This, strangely, was the opposite feeling. The wind on my face, the beating of my heart, the blood through my body—all these reminded me of the magic at hand, the magic of moving fast across the ground, pushed by two healthy working legs.
So here were two competing feelings: the feeling of pleasure on the one hand and the feeling of discomfort on the other.
Now here’s the interesting part. When I let myself consider the total task before me—my plan to run to the end without stopping—the feeling of discomfort started to win out. It’s such a long way to go, and I’m already tired. “Just stop and walk now.”
And that’s the thing—when I make the big goal disappear in my mind and keep eyes only on the next few steps in front of me, I was able to keep going. What’s more, I was able to enjoy myself.
Something similar happens whenever we go after large goals in life, whether we’re trying to learn a new skill, save up for a house, whatever. If we start thinking over our great goals, the negative feelings start to win out.
On the other hand, if we turn our attention to the next action, the next immediate step towards our goal, the journey becomes enjoyable.
1.What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?
A.The writer felt pleased. B.The writer had strange ideas.

(2024·浙江绍兴·模拟预测)In the office of remote sensing (遥感) scientist Liu Shaochuang, there is a huge photograph of a camel he snapped a decade ago in Xinjiang. He crouched for hours by a pool of water in the Gobi Desert to capture the image.
Since 2012, he has led a team in tracking and studying wild camels using satellite remote sensing technology.
Unlike zoologists who focus on species, Liu has studied the interrelationship between endangered animals and their environment, which he believes will help develop better protection strategies in the face of climate change.
His interest in wild camels began when his team tested a prototype (雏形) design of the lunar rover Yutu in the desert. Living in the harsh deserts in northwestern China and southwestern Mongolia, camels are listed as critically endangered animals. Experts estimate that the population of this species is currently less than 1, 000, of which around 650 are in China.
“Ten years ago, the research depended only on human observation, which was very primitive (原始的), ” Liu says. Because camels are fully migratory (迁徙) and can travel over long distances, scientists used to learn their habits by studying hoof prints and droppings. It was hard to find one camel in the desert, let alone track it. But Liu thought his expertise in satellite navigation (导航) and remote sensing might come in useful in the study of wild camels.
It was not easy at first. Liu learned zoology from scratch. His team had to spend several weeks each year braving dust and sandstorms in the vastness of the Gobi Desert seeking out camels. A scar on his right eyebrow is the result of a rollover accident on a rugged mountain road in Xinjiang.
“The most exciting moment was attaching a satellite positioning collar to a wild camel.” The tracking collar, equipped with special receivers, weighs only a few hundred grams. It can detach automatically (自动分离) and will not have a negative impact on the daily lives of the animals. The locations of the tracked animals are transmitted via satellite every day. Based on the data, scientists can get to know their migratory paths, living environments and possible threats they may meet with.
For Liu, it is worth the significant sci-tech effort to study such a rare species. He adds wildlife protection and research will become more precise and efficient with the help of technology.
1.What was it that made tracking wild camels difficult?
A.The number of camels experienced a sharp decline.
B.Massive migration made camels cover huge distances.
C.Primitive tools were used in human observation.
D.Hoof prints and droppings were never to be seen.
2.What can be inferred from the scar on his right eyebrow?
A.His carelessness in carrying out his research.
B.His inexperience at the very beginning of his work.
C.The hard conditions under which he worked.
D.The stress he met with in his work.
3.What does paragraph 7 mainly focus on?
A.The formation of the tracking collar. B.The definition of the tracking collar.
C.The importance of the tracking collar. D.The function of the tracking collar.
4.Which of the following can best describe Liu Shaochuang?
A.Generous and ambitious. B.Confident and grateful.
C.Creative and determined. D.Optimistic and modest.

(2024·浙江绍兴·模拟预测)Last week, my colleague (同事) Mary told me she had just spent two hours explaining to her students how to use the word “as”. I asked her if her students would be able to use the word correctly in everyday conversations after all of her great effort (努力). Her answer, interestingly, was, “Probably not.”
I began to wonder whether it was worth it to spend so much time teaching grammar rules to students. Indeed, grammar is important. It controls how words are put together in order to form sentences. For years, many teachers have been tirelessly explaining grammar rules to their students before giving them plenty of exercises to do.
In recent years, however, more and more studies have found that, for most language learners, studying grammar rules is not that important. Some researchers even consider it to be a waste of time. This has left some young teachers to wonder: Should I be teaching grammar to my students?
In my opinion, students should be taught grammar. However, I think grammar shouldn’t be considered as a separate “skill” or “course”. For the past two years, I have created situations in which my students feel a need to use good grammar in order to communicate properly in English. I leave them to discover the grammar rules on their own. Meanwhile, I encourage them to use English as much as possible outside of the classroom. I believe that, to become good at English, the most important thing is to spend enough time practicing speaking it.
I won’t ever spend two hours explaining a grammar rule. It will only make my students fall asleep rather than improve their English.

(2024·浙江绍兴·模拟预测)“Mom, are you ready?”
Dad had finally agreed that Mom and I could go on a one-week African safari! I had always wanted to visit Africa’s great outdoors.
It required a lot of training to get prepared for the safari. The training was boring, but I would suffer anything to go on a safari. And as the coach said, the training was very important.
At last, it was time to set out! The flight took 16 hours. I was bored to death, but deep down I still felt excited. When my mom, our guide, two other camping friends and I were driving to our campsite in an old jeep, I was thrilled to pieces. After taking many turns, we finally reached our destination (目的地). It was the day that I had been waiting for for the past three years!
We learned many interesting facts on our safari. For example, the giraffe has the most powerful kick of all the animals. The black mamba (树眼镜蛇) can move up to 11 kilometers an hour. I saw some lions trying to avoid the afternoon sun while lying under the shade of trees. I had read many books about wildlife. Aren’t lions, the “King of the Jungle”, very fierce (凶猛的)? We stopped to take a few quick pictures of them. The lions didn’t seem to mind. When I saw how calm they looked, I wondered if all the books I had read had been telling the truth.
At night, we had steak, baked potatoes, green beans and many types of fresh fruit I had never even seen before. They were delicious!
When we returned home, I felt tired but proud. It was an amazing trip I will never forget!

(24-25九年级下·浙江温州·开学考试)When Peng Jingxuan began playing the guzheng on the streets of France in 2018, she did not expect that the traditional instrument would change her life.
Peng began to study the guzheng when she was 7 years old. In 2017, she went to France to study for a master's degree in music. There, Peng was deeply drawn to the various performances by artists playing musical instruments on the streets.
But she seldom saw Chinese instruments played on the streets. So, in the summer of 2018, she took her guzheng and began to perform on the streets. She was surprised to find that very few people in France knew about the Chinese guzheng.
“I wanted to make this known to more people,” Peng said.
She began to do street performances to sharpen her skills. The more Peng played on the streets, the greater sense of responsibility she felt to spread Chinese music and culture.
To make this traditional Chinese instrument better known to people in France, Peng carefully chose each song、She chose to focus on traditional guzheng pieces and a number of pop songs with strong Chinese influences.
Considering that the audience might not be familiar with Chinese songs and that might make it hard for foreigners to fully understand her performances, Peng came up with nice adaptations (改编) of the songs, receiving positive opinions from audiences. For example, she prefaced (为……写序言) Big Fish, a song from a Chinese film, with explanations in French, mainly introducing the movie.

On Aug 25, Sun won the men’s 400m freestyle race at the National Summer Swimming Championships in Hefei, Anhui. He finished in 3 minutes and 49.58 seconds. This wasn’t his fastest time ever, but it was still a big win because he worked very hard over the past four years.

“I see something green,” Cody said. “The green highway sign?” I guessed, although it was hard to read it. I looked around. “The green hat on the girl in the car behind us?”
“Yes!” Cody laughed. “Your turn.”
Dad spoke to Mom, “I don’t like the looks of this. It’s getting harder to see anything.”
Suddenly, Dad stopped the car. We found the car nearly hit the tree on the roadside. Nobody talked. Cody and I stopped playing I See. It was like we were all helping Dad by keeping silent.
“We need to get off and wait out this storm,” Dad said. “But I can hardly see the road, not to mention an exit (出口).”
Just then, I saw a red, blinking light high in the sky. “I see something red!” I shouted. “Not now, Kenny,” Dad shouted.

(24-25九年级下·浙江金华·阶段练习)A stranger gave Danielle and her husband Nathan a box of onions, however, they later found they didn’t need it, so Danielle decided to pass the kindness on.
Thinking of many families trying to feed their loved ones, Danielle put the onions outside her home, with a sign encouraging others to “take what you need, share what you can”. Now, one year on, their stand (小摊), called the “Waverley Co-op”, provides thousands of people with 500kg of fruit, vegetables, and bread each week. “Others add their things to the stand, too.” Says Danielle.
“A common story we hear is that the things people take from the stand help them to save a few dollars so they can afford to buy meat that week.” For a new mum, 33-year-old Stacey, it’d been the lifeline she needed to keep food on the table for her family.

A.His carelessness in carrying out his research.
B.His inexperience at the very beginning of his work.
C.The hard conditions under which he worked.
D.The stress he met with in his work.
3.What does paragraph 7 mainly focus on?
A.The formation of the tracking collar. B.The definition of the tracking collar.
C.The importance of the tracking collar. D.The function of the tracking collar.
4.Which of the following can best describe Liu Shaochuang?
A.Generous and ambitious. B.Confident and grateful.

Peng began to study the guzheng when she was 7 years old. In 2017, she went to France to study for a master's degree in music. There, Peng was deeply drawn to the various performances by artists playing musical instruments on the streets.
