Subject How do you spend your free time?
Hi Sunny,
I hope you are doing well. I just finished my exams at school yesterday. The last few days have been quite busy.
This weekend, I plan to take a rest from all the pressure. Usually, I spend the weekends doing my homework. But as my exams are now over, I have some free time. I love music and I am going to learn how to play the violin. I have signed up for an online violin course.
Other than that, I may go out to play football with my friends. I also love to read about different cultures of the world. Right now I am exploring Chinese culture online. I am really amazed to discover so many new things about their culture.

If you grew up in an unusual family and felt limited by heavy thoughts, how would you change your life story? In the book Educated, the US writer Tara Westover shows us how she deals with hard times.
The book talks about Westover’s life. Her father had a junkyard (废品场) in Idaho, the US. It’s a very small mountain village. Tara and her brothers and sisters worked every day. Before she turned 17, she had never travelled outside. None of the kids in her family had ever been to a school or a hospital. As she got older, she felt that she needed to get away from this uncomfortable situation. Luckily, Westover’s older brother taught her to read. With hard work, Westover went to college on a scholarship, and later got a PhD (博士学位) in history at Cambridge University.
Education changed her, her life, her way of thinking and even her luck. After reading the book, I come to feel the deepest thanks for my own family, and the education I got. Education allows girls like Westover to fly like birds toward their own goals. It allows us to get a different view, find new experiences, better understand others and explore the wider world. I wish for all of us to be like free and powerful birds, growing and changing through challenges and difficulties.
1.What’s the writer’s main purpose of using the question as a beginning in Paragraph 1?
A.To tell readers how to make changes. B.To attract readers’ reading interest.

2.According to Paragraph 2, what can we know about Westover’s life?
A.Her older brother got a PhD in history. B.She changed her life through hard work.
C.Her life in the village was comfortable. D.She left her village at a very young age.
3.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Directions of birds’ flying. B.The ways of thinking.
C.Experiences of girls’ growing. D.The power of education.
4.What is the type of the text?
A.A news report. B.A book introduction.
C.A history story. D.A reading plan.

The Chinese language has become a bridge connecting China with the rest of the world. As native speakers, what are the good and hard parts of learning Chinese for you?
Zeng
Xuanhan,15
I have been poor at reciting (背诵) from an early age. For example, when I was in Grade 8, my Chinese teacher asked us to recite a poem by Li Bai. It only had eight lines but I spent three days remembering it.
But I don’t always find learning Chinese boring. I sometimes enjoy studying Chinese and writing articles, even though it takes me more time. I can share my thoughts through these articles and words. It is a pleasure to show my real feelings through Chinese characters.
Tan Haoxuan,
14
Chinese is harder for me to learn than subjects like physics. I often find it hard to get the meaning of passages or the feelings behind the writer’s words. So, I often fail the exam. However, learning Chinese can be fun. Our teacher once organized a poetry activity where we wrote our own poems. We had fun discussing ideas, creating sentences and winning “The Best Poem”. Since then, I have been crazy about writing, especially poems.
Zhao Yarui, 14
Chinese writing can show some feelings in a strong way, even in silence. Each practice helps me improve. Also, sharing my work in class makes me feel proud. However, classical Chinese (文言文) has been very challenging. Their meanings are hard to understand. As a result, I always lose points on this part. Also, other subjects need more attention, so I have less time for reading Chinese than before. This affects my Chinese studies.
1.Why does Tan Haoxuan often fail the Chinese exam?
A.He is not good at classical Chinese.
B.He can’t remember the poems in time.
C.He pays little attention on reading Chinese.
D.It’s hard for him to understand the passages or writers.
2.Which of the following do all of the three students enjoy?
A.Writing. B.Reading. C.Poems. D.Classical Chinese.
3.What are the comments mainly about?
A.Problems and suggestions to learn Chinese.
B.Likes and dislikes of Chinese way of life.
C.Difficulties and happiness of learning Chinese.
D.Personal experiences to learn a new language.

(24-25九年级上·浙江宁波·期末)Dear Tengfei,
Long time no see! We’ll have a fascinating party to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the US’s diplomatic ties (外交关系) with China in our school. And I’m happy to join it, but I’m worried about how to give a wonderful report on my experiences in China, so can you help me? Here’s my report.
Growing up in the US, I can speak English well, and I’ve learned other languages: Chinese, Spanish and French. In order to learn Chinese well, I trained my skills through travel, exploring cities like Beijing, Dali and Kunming.
An important experience happened to me two summers ago when I traveled to Beijing. There, I took part in a project where I taught British Culture to primary school students. This greatly deepened my connection to the Chinese language and traditions. Our classroom became a mixture of ideas, language sharing and lots of laughter. Communicating with my students helped their English learning and also built my own understanding of Chinese language and traditions.
Living in Beijing, I visited the busy markets and peaceful temples, learning how the local people live. The friendliness and welcoming nature of the people in Beijing left an impression on me.
My travels and experiences there have changed how I see the world. They made me admire the interconnection of all communities and inspired me to become a global citizen (全球公民). I am now pleased to help people from different countries, especially between China and the US, understand each other better.
What do you think of my report? Would you like to help me to think up a good title for it?
Yours,
Sam

2.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph Three refer to?

3.How did Sam feel when he was traveling in Beijing?

Hi Sunny,
I hope you are doing well.
How do you like to spend your free time? I would love to know about this. Cheers.

2.According to Paragraph 2, what can we know about Westover’s life?

3.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Directions of birds’ flying. B.The ways of thinking.

【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C

Yours,
Sam
