I returned 10 minutes later. When I walked back into the vet hospital, I was greeted by the vet assistant with a big smile. She said, “You have a very kind gentleman waiting for you.” I was a bit puzzled until I saw the man who I had let go ahead of me. He was standing there with a case of cat food with his hands. He smiled at me, saying “I think I should keep my promise. Here’s your case of cat food as a thank you for your kindness.” I was completely surprised. I never thought he would actually take my joke seriously. I thanked him generously, and he just shrugged and said, “It’s the least I could do. ” We chatted for a while, and I found out that he was also an animal lover.
With the case of cat food, I got home. I couldn’t wait to tell my daughter what had happened. When I shared the story with her, she was amazed at it. She said, “Mom, this is such a wonderful story. It just shows that there are still kind people in the world.” We then opened the case of cat food and watched the cat eating happily. As I sat there with my daughter, I felt a deep sense of contentment. This unexpected act of kindness not only lightened our financial burden but also filled our hearts with warmth and hope. From then on, I made up my mind to pass on “love”to others. Just as a saying goes: “Rose given and fragrance in hands.”

Karen Keech Swerling worked in Hollywood as a costume designer for three decades. She and her husband were looking for a change of pace in retirement, so eight years ago they traded their house in Malibu for an early 1900s Victorian in Richmond’s museum district. Swerling turned the basement into a studio for her nonprofit organization, Richmond Really Sews!, and she offered free classes to anyone crazy about sewing.
Swerling said, “People chat while they’re sewing and become friends — I love it. Sewing allows us to express where we come from and how we feel. We can’t do that if we go to the store.”
Members of Richmond Really Sews! are people of different backgrounds. Every Saturday afternoon, they gather around 30 work stations with different sewing machines. On Nov. 2nd, they showcased their work at their annual fundraiser, Richmond Frocktails, a fashion show featuring their handmade creations. It now produces sustainable (可持续的) food while supporting individuals facing social challenges and equipping them with tools to overcome challenges and transform them into positive outcomes.

Simply put, soul searching means the effort to find meaning and purpose in life. It is about uncovering the reason for our existence and filling our lives with clear purpose. Though not a medical or commonly used term in psychiatry(精神病学), soul searching represents a healthy form of self-reflection. From a psychological perspective, as explained by Natalie Rosado, the founder of Tampa Consulting Place, soul searching is a “deep introspective(好内省的)process through which an individual tries to gain insight into their deepest thoughts, emotions, values, and beliefs”.
People who do soul searching might do so to face unresolved conflicts, gain a better understanding of their identity, and deepen their connection with themselves and others. It plays a vital role in personal growth. By questioning established patterns and looking for change, one creates room for improvement.
Journaling is a valuable way for soul searching. Writing about daily experiences, thoughts, and emotions can clarify one’s feelings and motivations, revealing patterns or conflicts that need attention. Additionally, journaling is generally beneficial for mental health. A 2022 study showed that it reduced anxiety by 9%, PTSD(创伤后应激障碍)by 6%, and depression by 2%.
We know that soul searching can be challenging at times. “Soul searching can be tough, and that’s completely normal and okay,” Rosado says. It’s valid to feel that things are hard and that you’re not making much progress. Many people also end up feeling confused or overwhelmed. Rosado emphasizes the importance of being patient with oneself, “There is no immutable timeline for soul searching, and going at your own pace can help you move forward smoothly.”
“There are several ways to put soul searching into daily life, such as keeping a journal, taking long walks in nature, and undergoing treatment. It can also be a natural part of your routine.” Rosado suggests seeing this process as something natural and organic rather than something forced. Being mindful of your values and true self naturally leads to personal growth. Having an attitude of discovery and introspection is positive and can motivate you to become the best version of yourself.
12.How do people make progress by soul searching?
A.By dealing with difficulties.
B.By building their identity.
C.By interacting with others more.
D.By challenging existent patterns.
13.Why is journaling good for self-reflection?
A.It develops a regular habit.
B.It represents the true feelings.
C.It records prioritized issues.
D.It lowers the level of anxiety.
14.What does the underlined word “immutable” mean?
A.Fixed. B.Complex. C.Detailed. D.Crucial.
15.What can be implied from what Rosado says in the last paragraph?
A.Soul searching may consume patience.
B.Being close to nature is a part of life.
C.There are ways to refer for soul searching.
D.Personal growth requires correct values.

The comparison thief loves to sneak into our minds without warning and steal our joy or peace. And with social media flooding our lives, it’s easier than ever to find someone “better” to compare ourselves to. Constantly measuring ourselves against others can be an exhausting mind game. 16 . We either walk away feeling inadequate (不足的) or get a false sense of fulfillment, believing we are better than others. I constantly struggled with this battle. So, what did I do?

Restrict social media time. I stopped following social media accounts that made me feel inadequate or insecure and set a boundary about my time on those apps. They can become a wormhole and suck up the precious time we have. 19 . Better yet, put your phone down and engage with the people whose opinion truly matters.
Be present. I began to train my mind to trust that I did not need to plan, control, and schedule everything. 20 . I wouldn’t worry about recording a moment for others to see. Instead, I would choose to focus on seeing and appreciating it for myself.

B.Seek for confidence

I was wandering along the street on a pleasant day, heading towards our local drugstore. As I walked,I suddenly remembered that I needed to buy a special type of canned cat food from the vet (兽医). In fact, the cat belongs to my daughter, and she’s currently in a financial dilemma and can’t afford to pay for the expensive food. Just the day before,I had had a conversation with her about it and expressed my concern that I can’t afford to keep spending $300 a month for the vet food.
When I entered the vet hospital, the place was busy with activity. The vet assistant was occupied helping another customer. Fortunately, she recognized me and knew exactly what kind of food I needed to buy. She asked me if I wanted half a case or a whole case. After a moment’s thought, I decided on the full case. Just then, another customer walked in and made his way to the counter. Since I wasn’t in a particular hurry, I politely said, “Go ahead and serve this gentleman. Meanwhile, I’ll go to the drugstore. That will give you time to do your paperwork while I’m gone.”
She looked relieved and said, “Thanks, that would be great!”
The gentleman, a kind-looking man with a friendly smile, immediately protested, “You should go first, you were here before me.”
I waved my hand and replied, “No worries, you go right ahead. My pleasure,” He jokingly replied, “Wow, how can I thank you?”
Without really thinking, in a moment of cheerfulness, I said, “You could buy me a case of cat food. Ha ha.” I laughed and then turned to leave.
As I walked out of the vet hospital, I couldn’t help but smile at the unexpected interaction. It was just a small moment, but it added a touch of warmth to my day. Little did I know what surprises the future might hold.
