A
Two years ago, fueled by my envy for those with gardens, I signed up for a plot, a place where I could read and write in the sun, safe from distractions. A few months ago, I was presented a half-plot of available land. The plot, which was bigger than I could dream of, was beautiful but overgrown — getting it started would require hard work. I wasn’t sure I had it in me.
Fast forward to now. After seeking guidance from my family and watching beginners’ gardening videos, I spend hours a week sowing, weeding, watering and harvesting. My summer at the plot has so far offered countless lessons, but the most important one has been learning more about how food actually grows. Take the humble cauliflower — a common sight in the supermarket, yet it demands patient tending for up to six months, all for a short moment on the plate. Seasonality has also taken on a new meaning. I knew that all fresh food has its “season” but it was only when I was overwhelmed by an endless supply of courgettes that I really understood I could be eating them for months.
Yet abundant harvests come with a lesson in impermanence. Fresh produce goes off quickly once ripened and picked. And so I’ve turned to the old craft of preservation — learning what to boil and freeze, or make into jam — to make things last. When the harvest has been more than I can manage, I’ve shared the abundance with friends and family, spreading the joy.
While gardening is a welcome escape from the chaos of the modern world, you can’t avoid the reality of the climate crisis. It’s one thing to read these in the news or see them reflected in prices, but it’s quite another when you have to be in tune with weather patterns, praying for prolonged sunshine without the unbearable heat.
As I continue to tend my plot, I do so with a sense of humility, wonder and excitement. What started as a desire for a small patch of green has grown into something much more significant — a connection to my local environment, a respect for the food I eat and an awareness of the fragile natural systems that sustain us. In the beginning, I was worried I would fail the plot; instead, I’m finding myself growing alongside it.
1.How did the author feel when getting the plot?
A.Proud but anxious. B.Grateful but puzzled.
C.Amazed but worried. D.Moved but disappointed.
2.While working on the plot, the author learned to __________.
A.remove chaos from life B.create seasonal recipes
C.identify common plants D.respect laws of nature
3.What does the author’s experience tell us?
A.Labor is the most reliable wealth. B.Every season brings its own lessons.
C.The land is made better and so is the gardener. D.One should stay hungry for constant progress.

Dala horses, the brightly painted wooden horses, with their complex patterns, come from the Dalarna region and date back to the 1600s. Originally carved as toys, they gradually became the symbols of Swedish tradition over time.
That was my first learning about Dala horses from a book on Swedish culture. While I didn’t fully understand the deeper meaning at that time, I was immediately drawn to their charm and uniqueness. When I was younger, I remember how excited I was when my parents took me to a craft workshop. I had seen these colorful horses in many places — on postcards, at the zoo and even in shops. But this time, I was going to create one myself.
The process was so much fun! First, we started with a small wooden block. We used carving tools to carefully shape the wood into a horse. It was a bit tricky at first, and my hands were so shaky, but as I kept carving, the shape of the horse slowly started to appear. Once we were done carving, it was time to paint! I felt like an artist as I painted tiny flowers and swirls (旋涡) on its body. My horse was not perfect, but it felt like a masterpiece to me!
I still remember how proud I felt holding the finished horse. Its patterns, painted in bright red, blue and yellow, looked like the Dala horses I had seen before. My parents told me that the colors and designs meant something special, and I could tell this little wooden horse had a bigger meaning than just being a decoration.
Years later, I still have that Dala horse in my room. It’s a reminder of that wonderful day and my connection to Swedish traditions. The Dala horse is more than a piece of art — it’s a symbol of history, culture, and cherished memories.
4.Which is the true statement about the Dala horse?
A.It was originally used as a decoration.
B.It came from the Swedish region of Dalarna.
C.It originated from a famous book in Swedish culture.
D.It is a modern invention inspired by traditional wooden toys.
5.How did the author feel when he first learned about the Dala horse?
A.Indifferent. B.Confused. C.Fascinated. D.Skeptical.
6.Why did the author like his Dala horse so much?
A.His parents spoke highly of his remarkable carving skills.
B.It served as a reminder of his bond with Swedish traditions.
C.It approached an ideal state of perfection in form and detail.
D.It exhibited a remarkable similarity to the ones on postcards.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Dala Horses: Carved from happiness
B.Dala Horses: A Swedish Artistic Wonder
C.Discovering the Beauty of Dala Horses’ Patterns
D.The History and Making of Dala Horses in Sweden
C
So many of us hold on to little resentments (仇怨) from an argument, a misunderstanding, or some other painful event. We wait for someone else to reach out to us ― believing this is the only way we can forgive or rebuild a friendship or family relationship.
A friend of mine whose health isn’t very good, recently told me that she hasn’t spoken to her son in almost three years. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn’t speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she resisted at first, “I can’t do that. He’s the one who should apologize.” She was willing to die before reaching out to her only son. After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and sincerely said sorry to her. As is usually the case when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.
Whenever we hold on to our anger we turn “small thing” into “big thing” in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn’t mean that you’re wrong. Everything will be fine. You’ll experience the peace of letting go as well as the joy of letting others be right. You’ll also notice that as you reach out and let others be “right” they will become less defensive (戒备的) and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But if for some reason they don’t that’s okay too. You will have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world and certainly you’ll be more peaceful yourself.
8.What does the underlined word “resisted” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Regretted B.Refused. C.Recalled. D.Reminded
9.What happened to the author’s friend after she called her son?
A.She realized her mistakes. B.She lost the battle and died.
C.She received her son’s apology. D.She was encouraged by the author.
10.What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A.Holding on to the right position leads to resentments.
B.Turning small thing into big one will make a difference.
C.Being peaceful is more important than being right in disagreement.
D.To avoid arguments and misunderstandings means seeking for happiness.
11.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To tell the readers to reach out first.
B.To instruct the readers how to apologize.
C.To teach the readers how to gain inner peace.
D.To inform the readers the importance of peace.

Growing up with movies such as “High School Musical” and “Grease”, which presented the ideal (理想的) high school friendships, we sometimes expect a perfect relationship. Indeed, some high school friendships can be real and simple; while still some high school students will meet a friend who causes trouble. With failed friendships come lessons and experiences learned for the future. You will know the influence after you leave high school.
“I was always worried about what my friends thought about me. Sometimes my friends would make fun of what I wore or what I would do. I always tried to get along well with them, but I realized how happy I was once I stopped contacting them after high school,” said Elisha, Class of 2020.
Most teens have not realized the big question when dealing with high school problems. In five years, will this still matter? It is hard looking at the big picture when the problems are in front of you, which is understandable. However, most teens need a moment to reflect (反思) and question if the problem matters in a long time.
Briana, a high school teacher, said, “Now, I am in contact with two high school friends. I think the friendship experiences I had in high school shaped who I am because I learned to be open minded and befriend all kinds of people. I learned to see people for who they are, not what they wear or who they play with. I learned most of all how to be a good friend.”
High school is a small part of your life, but it has a huge influence on who you will become and where you will go. Friendships and relationships help shape who you are, whether they are good or bad. Lessons are brought, and lessons are learned.
12.Why did the author mention the two movies in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of the passage. B.To explain what a high school friendship is.
C.To attract readers’ attention to these two movies. D.To recommend (推荐) these two movies to readers.
13.What did Elisha think of her “friends”?
A.They made her unhappy. B.They got along well with her.
C.They cared about her behavior. D.They were always worried about her.
14.Why did Briana think her friendship experiences shape her?
A.She learned to play with her friends. B.She learned to make different friends.
C.She learned to shape her friends’ minds. D.She learned to wear just like her friends.
15.How does the author support his arguments in Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 4?
A.By listing data (数据). B.By giving examples.
C.By giving a definition (定义). D.By making comparisons (对比).
16.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Failed friendships made teens worried. B.Good friendships greatly influenced teens.
C.High school friendships help to shape teens. D.Friendships are difficult for teens to deal with.

How to Stop Being Self Centered
If you’re worried about being a self-centered person, that concern shows you’ve already taken an important step towards change. 17 . So if you need more guidance on this journey, we can help. Here are a useful list of simple things you can try.
18
Praising others more often doesn’t reduce your own light. It feels good to take credit for things, especially when you work hard for them. If you notice yourself basking in the spotlight a little too often, though, try devoting energy to praising someone else’s achievements.
Let someone else be in charge
Do you always feel like you need to make your voice heard? Try taking a back seat for a change. Let someone else lead the group when you’re collaborating on a project. Don’t speak for everyone. 19 .
Celebrate the success of others
20 . If you’re having a hard time being happy for a friend who just got an awesome promotion, it’s probably because you made the situation about you somehow. Don’t worry, this is a mental habit that you can definitely break.
Practice gratitude
Challenge yourself to say “thank you” more often. If you don’t feel thankful for the good things in your life, that usually means you take them for granted. 21 . Try looking for any excuse to show others that you’re grateful for them. Showing gratitude can motivate you to continue your journey of self-improvement.
A.Share the spotlight
B.Change is tough, though
C.Change is as good as a rest
D.Instead, let someone else speak their mind
E.Be excited for them without comparing yourself
F.Unfortunately, this is a pretty self-centered way to look at the world
G.Making your voice heard is important, too, but try to pick your battles

It was a fine day. My friend Henry and I set off on a short trip with a local as our guide. He said it would be a rather easy two-hour hike to see the Paiute trout (克拉克大马哈鱼) living in its natural living place. We believed what he had said and started out following him. But we later found it was a different story.
When we three arrived at the place, Henry and I were worn out. However, we were not too tired to enjoy the excitement when we saw the colorful fish swimming freely there. I stood by the water and Henry took some photos of me with green plants and beautiful flowers. Time passed quickly. Before we knew it, it was getting late. The local guide told us that we could only appreciate the scenery (景色) for a brief while and then we had to go back to our car before dark. We had thought the rest of the hike should be relaxing. But it wasn’t as it was the steepest (最陡峭的) way that we’d faced so far.
When we advanced, my huge backpack felt like a ton of stone. Both of my legs were really painful and tears ran out of my eyes. And there was another mountain ahead of us. As the sun began to set, my legs gave out completely.

Dear Dick,
I write to share my unforgettable experience as a volunteer tour guide for a group of international students last weekend. One moment that stood out was when I helped a student from France understand the history behind the local landmarks. Seeing his eyes light up with newfound knowledge was incredibly rewarding.
This experience taught me the joy of sharing culture and the importance of communication. It was a reminder of how enriching it is to connect with people from different backgrounds. I feel more confident in my ability to bridge cultures and look forward to more such opportunities.
Yours,
Li Hua

Seeing that, Henry asked me to take one tiny step at a time. He patiently explained that each small step would bring me closer to the end. “Don’t think about the whole journey, just focus on this single step,” he encouraged. With his words in mind, I gathered my strength and forced my trembling legs to move. Step by step, I made my way forward, ignoring the pain in my body. The local guide also stayed by my side, offering me words of comfort. Henry took my backpack, which made me feel a bit lighter. I was so exhausted that I could hardly breathe, but I didn’t give up.
Finally, we climbed over the mountain. As we reached the top, a sense of achievement washed over me. I looked back at the path we had come through, feeling proud of myself for not giving up. The view from the top was breathtaking. The setting sun painted the sky in warm colors, making it a scene worth the struggle. We walked down the mountain more easily in the gentle light. When we got back to the car, I was tired but filled with joy. This experience taught me that with determination and the support of friends, we can overcome any difficulty.
