Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes. She said putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. She said: “I’ve waited a long time for it.”
A few days later, Leverton took her first ballet class after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper. It showed older women dancing in a class near Leverton’s house. “As I came in the door, I found a big smile on my face. From the minute I started, I felt like coming home.”
Leverton had longed to dance as a child. Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK. Her father was a train driver on the underground in London and her mother held two cleaning jobs. Nonetheless, she harboured her dream of being a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员).
At her present age, a grand plie-lowering to the floor with bent knees-seemed to be out of the question. It took her three months to master the move: leaping and landing on one foot. ” I love the struggle and the challenge of learning something new. People in their 60s have a lot of self-limiting beliefs: ‘I can’t do it,’ ‘I’m not good enough.’ And maybe they’re not good enough. But it doesn’t matter,” she said.
Ballet has been transformative. At a medical appointment a few months after Leverton’s first class, a nurse measured her at 163cm, half an inch taller than she had thought. She attributes (归因) the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped. Dancing has also brought new friends. She met a group of older, more independent women and worked together towards a team award with the Royal Academy of Dance. And then, of course, there is the joyful feeling. “Ballet is all the therapy (治疗) I’ll ever need,” said Leverton.
4. How did Leverton feel after taking her dance lesson?
A. Tired. B. Confused. C. Shocked. D. Thrilled.
5. Why didn’t Leverton learn to dance she was young?
A. Her family was badly off. B. She wasn’t able to leap high.
C. Her family laughed at her dream. D. She had to focus on classes.
6. What did dancing bring to Leverton?
A. A team award. B. Money and fame.
C. Friendship and joy. D. A medical treatment.
7. What can we learn from Leverton’s story?
A. Hard work pays off. B. Never too old to pursue dreams.
C. Interest is the key to success. D. Money isn’t everything.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. B

Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur(创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them.
It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.
With her dad’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. We are all born social and company to live happy and fruitful life. Healthy and supportive mutual relationships help reduce stress and promote the, physical, mental and emotional well-being by building skills like time management, assertiveness (坚定自信), sociability and empathy.
Making friends has made me feel secure. However, I have to be cautious to pick up friends sharing similar tastes and values. In addition, having added to one’s circle of friends helps one feel supported.
It is true that finding time to cultivate relationships is all about effective time management. My busy uncle finds time to catch up with family and friends during his tea and lunch breaks. Similarly my friend Somya uses her time on her way back home from work in her chauffeur-driven car to catch up with people. The modern inventions of SMS and e-mail help send wishes for birthdays and anniversaries to show your love and care.
Assertiveness is as much applicable to relationships. My friend Mohana emphasizes that neither being a passive observer nor being aggressive helps relationships. It is assertiveness in our relationships that opens the lines of effective communication. It emphasizes helping friends in need and also strengthens mutually supportive relationships.
It is also true that assertiveness by intuition promotes discretion (自行决定权) of friends and helps Lalitha distinguish positive people from drains of energy. She can easily figure this out by the flow of the conversation, the way each feels understood, accepted and supported, and by how I feel, happy, bored or energized in the relationship. It also helps to know whether all benefit from each other’s positive aspects.
Handling stress in life is all about cultivating mutually supportive relationships and working on them. Manisha always says she feels great when sharing her feelings after a hard day with people who share similar ideas. Actually we all need someone who would not just hear us, but listen to us, and we need to cultivate the art of listening and understanding people.
12. Which of the following helps build mutually supportive social relationships?
A. Being passive. B. Being assertive.
C. Being aggressive. D. Being relaxed.
13. A person most needs supportive social relationships when he/she is________.
A. lonely B. bored C. stressed D. energetic
14. From the passage, who can positively get supportive social relationship?
A. Manisha. B. Mohana. C. Lalitha. D. Somya.
15. What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A. How should we handle our stress in life?
B. What is to be done for applicable relationships?
C. How can we pick up friends supporting us?
D. How people build mutually supportive social relationship?
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

“BEES ARE DYING!” Doodlebug Pinkley cried, thrusting his latest copy of World of the Weird at his sister Dandelion. His favorite magazine had a lot of strange but important content. This month it was insects in danger. The number of certain bugs, including bees, was falling sharply all over the world.
“It’s terrible!” Dandelion replied, after reading the article. They were sitting on the outdoor patio (露台) of Cool Yule’s Ice Cream Shop.
“Maybe we could make a bee roof garden, too — like in this article,” Doodlebug suggested. Yule recommended making it on the patio, adding a pollinator (传粉昆虫) garden up there would attract bees — and more customers. “Brilliant!” Everyone else responded in a chorus.
Now the problem was how to get the funds. Dandelion proposed raising money by setting up a booth near the shop’s entrance to alert people and ask them to donate. The plan was a go!
The next day their friends Bog, Tomiko and Izzy met Doodlebug and Dandelion inside Yule’s. Everyone was excited. They made handouts explaining how the garden would attract pollinators, do something to help prevent flooding, and improve the air.
“We should have a bee mascot (吉祥物),” Izzy suggested. Doodlebug recalled the old bee costume that his Mom wore for Halloween once. Over the enthusiastic uproar, Dandelion shouted, “And you’ll be the bee, Doodlebug!” “WILL NOT!” Doodlebug shot back. “Too big. We need to stuff some grownup into that costume.” But who, then? For ten mad minutes the kids debated loudly.
“Silence, you little noisy kids!” someone suddenly roared. “I’m trying to read about bees in danger!” The whole crew turned in shock. There sat Doodlebug’s horrible teacher, Mrs. Noodleknocker. Doodlebug had discovered long ago that she was a World of the Weird fan, but that didn’t make her any nicer. “Bees and butterflies need help!” Mrs. Noodleknocker cried. “But a person can’t even worry about them peacefully!”

【答案】 Doodlebug’s eyes went wide as a brilliant idea came to mind. “THE BEE!” he exclaimed and pointed at Mrs. Noodleknocker, only to be greeted with a glare. Dandelion detailed their plan and asked her to be the bee mascot. After digesting the information, Mrs. Noodleknockerher had her irritable expression softened a bit. “Just forget it,” she said, turning back to her magazine. “Only real bees matter.” Tomiko responded boldly that this whole plan was indeed for real bees. “Please, lady?” Bog coaxed, adding her favor might double the fund. Mrs. Noodleknocker put down the magazine, a tiny smile glinting across her usually mean mouth. It had been a long time since anyone called her a lady. Finally, she snorted and gave in.
The bee campaign was a massive success! On the day of fundraising, Mrs. Noodleknocker rocked the bee costume in all her pollinator glory. Instead of threatening passers-by with a sting, the group decided a friendly bee was the right way to go. The following hours witnessed the bee buzzing around the booth, arms and legs punching and kicking. Whenever her strange insect eyes landed on someone, the victim quickly forked over cash — even without being stung. So hilarious and inspiring! A few weeks later Cool Yule’s bee garden bloomed spectacularly, attracting customers and good insects from all around. And Mrs. Noodleknocker was almost a nice person from then on. It proved that being a bee could be good for anyone.

With her dad’s permission she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.
Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore’s product—CanCandy.
As CanCandy’s success grows, so does Moore’s credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.
Meanwhile with her parents’ help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy’s profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination, it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore.

A How should we handle our stress in life?
B. What is to be done for applicable relationships?
C. How can we pick up friends supporting us?
D. How people build mutually supportive social relationship?
